Curious, does anybody have any consoles that they own for just one gaming experience?
I have a few, and didn't know if others did too.
I have an OG XBOX for: Jedi Academy
I have an SMS for: Dick Tracy
I have a GC for: Ikaruga (and Gameboy player I guess)
I do have a few other games for each one, but nothing I care about.
I literally only keep those consoles for those games.
-
I got a PS2 again and had it modchipped just to play Tengai Makyou III.
I got a Japanese PS3 with full vackwards compatibility just to try to get decent picture quality while playing TMIII.
I got a Japanese 360 just for TM Ziria.
-
Not me. I can see buying a system specifically for one game (like me getting a PSTV to play Ys), but it seems crazy to never buy more to play on it.
-
I bought a XaviX just for Jackie Chan Fitness Pad...but I bought the boxing game, too.
I only have a handful of Xbox and PS2 games, but I intend to get more.
-
I've got a Sega Master System 1 just for Sonic the Hedgehog, since I remember enjoying it a lot on a friend's Game Gear back in the day. Then, I realised that Sonic runs really slow on that PAL machine. (pun intended). So to speed the poor guy up, I yet need to perform a 50/60Hz mod.
One day, I'd like to get my hands on Micky Mouse: Land of Illusion, although I'm in no hurry.
Another friend gave me a Game Gear some years ago. He told me, he found it laying around somewhere, when he passed it on to me. Yeah, sure he did... I better not ask him twice about that.
I still have no game for it. Since many games are SMS conversions anyway, and I have no way of testing the hardware first before buying a game, I just leave it on the shelf.
-
I was going to say no but I realized I never got more than Battle Heat for my PCFX. Got it out of storage recently, it's all yellow now. :( Had plans to one day buy Tengai Makyou and Team Innocent for it, at least.
I do buy consoles for one game initially, though. Xbox 360 was entirely sold to me because of Dead Rising. It's still exclusive to the 360, and one of my favorite games. I eventually bought a ton of 360 games though. Only have 4 games for my Neo Geo Pocket Color I bought in 99, but they are all 75% awesome. 100% awesome if you are into Sonic, that game didn't mesh with me though. Card Fighter's Clash, Match of the Millenium, and Dark Arms are all favorites though. Wish I had bought a couple more. Everything else I bought a reasonable amount of games for. My buddy bought a PS4 for Bloodborne and didn't have anything else until Odin Sphere. It was like a whole year or more with just one game.
-
I bought a Virtual Boy for the 2nd time (cheap, though!) just for Red Alarm. That is a really unique game; wish it were on the 3DS or something.
-
I got a Laseractive for Triad Stone. And thats it. :) I still have a few other games for it, but none of them get the playtime as much as Triad Stone does.
-
I bought a Laseractive just for Virtual Cameraman.
At least that's what crosses my mind to persuade myself out of the purchase everytime I see one on eBay.
My PS4 is basically a Nobunaga's Ambition machine by now (remember my PS4 thread? I should have stayed on PC imo :().
-

If I ever saw a LA for sale and it had Triad Stone I'd have a hard time not buying it. That's my most wanted game probably too, nice choice!
-

This. I think the system I have the fewest games for is Sega CD at 6 which I am looking to cut down to 5 soon and I'm not looking for any games for it. Maybe if some games were more reasonable price wise I'd have more for it, but I'm good with playing games like Keio, Snatcher etc... with cdrs...
Edit: And I mean shit, if Popful Mail goes up much more than current levels I'd be tempted to sell/trade it. I love Popful Mail as a game but damn.
-
Months ago i got a modded original xbox.Mostly for it having coin-ops i just wanted a way to play allot of arcade games on the tv.I doubt i will collect for it unless for a few select games.
-
I bought a JPN Dreamcast Console so I could play Shenmue without a boot disc, mod or any other sort of system hackery.
-
64DD for F-Zero Expansion. Not sure if this counts because it's not a system, it's an expansion. Also it's not a game, it's an expansion.
...also I ended up enjoying that 64DD golf game.
-
I have a 360 for the 3 Naruto sandbox styled games, but, then again, I got the system for free.....haven't touched it in years.
-
CDi for Tetris
-
I can't say that I have bought a system just to experience one specific game. I did get a few systems that were either dirt cheap or received as gifts that came with one game. I've never had the urge to buy additional games.
Supervision: Crystball
Game.com: Resident Evil 2
Original Xbox: Panzer Dragoon Orta
Vita: Uncharted

I would like to get a Supergrafx some day, and while I'm sure there are many reasons to get one- The game I'm most interested in playing on it would be daimakaimura.
-
I can see buying a console because of that one game, but only having it for that one game, nah.
-
at first I got a wii just to play monster hunter with my bro, but eventually softmodded it and played a bunch of games on it.
-

Now that you mentioned the Supergrafx...I initially bought one just for Daimakaimura. I think I bought the game first before the Supergrafx system since it was cheap. Later on I ended up getting Aldynes which is great and Battle Ace since that one is cheap.
-
PSVITA TV thingy for TxK, need my tempest, even if it's not "Tempest"
-
I legitimately only own pokemon yellow for the OG gameboy line.
I only have Mario Kart for GBA (though I do have a flash cart)
there's plenty of systems I bought BECAUSE of one or two games, but i've fleshed those libraries out a bit.
PSVita -> Ys & Persona 4 golden
OG XBOX -> JSRF & Otogi
Gamecube -> Paper Mario
Playstation -> FFVIII & Mega Man Legends
PS3 -> Ride to Hell Retribution
Genesis -> Gunstar Heroes
SNES -> uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... I dunno.
-
you guys make a great point about buying it for one game then expanding. i guess that is what has happened to me, but then i went full circle and only care to keep that one game i bought it for at this point.
-
SNES -> uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... I dunno.
SNERD!!!!
-
SNES -> uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... I dunno.
SNERD!!!!
I honestly don't think I have any SNES games, despite owning a system.........
*EDIT*
I'm a lying sack of shit.
I have repro carts of king of demons and Clock tower.
if you don't thing those are good games, then you can blow yourself.
-
I bought a Wonderswan for Judgement Silversword... still waiting for a hypothetical repro

I find Jennifer Connelly beautiful does it count?
-
I mostly got a Wonderswan for the Final Fantasy set, but by the time I was able to get it, FFII was out and I was looking forward to FFIV. Those games alone will always justify the WS for me.
I always wanted a PC-FX while it was still mysterious, but the only game I've kept for it between owning the hardware is TM Kararkuri Kakutuden.
-
Hmmm ... it may sound overboard, but "yes"
Neo Geo AES for Alpha Mission II.
Then later on I bought Viewpoint too, so that's 2 games.
-
Not quite a fit to the topic, but I bought Metal Gear Solid 4 & 5 for PS3, and I don't own the console. I can borrow one from my renters any time when I make any serious progress in my gaming backlog of PS1/PS2 games, so I probably won't ever buy one so long as that option is around... Can I still even call myself much of a gamer in the last 10 years ? I dunno... :/
-
No, nothing comes to mind.
The closest was the cd-i for Tetris.
-
I bought a Wonderswan for Judgement Silversword... still waiting for a hypothetical repro
Could buy Eschatos for 360, its included. Also Eschatos is pretty fun.
-
This feels like the question works better if it was
What single game motivated you to purchase X gaming console?
Example: I bought the PS3 when I saw MGS IV. Which lead me to now own 30 other games.
Or something.
-

I thought to do that, but the WS is so small and light it can fit your tyniest pocket, and giving JS a quick run anywhere and anywhen (is that even a word?) you want must be pretty awesome.

I see. If you can't find a repro, I guess there's always this thing: http://www.flashmasta.com/category/wonderswan-flash-cart/

No way !!
A big thank you for the link, I wouldn't have thought a WS Flash cart could exist.
-

Seeing Ultra Ben Buja's ridiculous machinima videos of GTA IV motivated me to get an Xbox 360 in 2010. I just HAD to play that game, and it was no disappointment.

GBA micro for Final Fantasy 6
I have actually bought consoles over the years just based on seeing a particular game in magazines but eventually started buying other games for each of them.

That's hardcore..... and I'm sorry.

I have actually bought consoles over the years just based on seeing a particular game in magazines but eventually started buying other games for each of them.
When I bought a Micro (already had GBAs), the first game I played through was FFVI. :)
The screen resolution being lower than the games was very disappointing though.
-
Someone mentioned PS3. Last of Us is worth owning a PS3. Then, Gran Turismo, then japanese tities.
-
Well at first I bought a xbox 360 just for phantasy Star Universe

The bad thing is that the 360 slim is much more quiet than the OG 360, and the slim still sounds like a concord compared to my ps4. I don't even like turning it on anymore because I'm not used to it.
-
if the 360 is loud, dont buy a Vitamix

I got rid of all that noise by installing the games onto the HDD.

I'd buy a console just for some JP titties

Its ok...it happens. The system actually had impressive hardware....if it wasnt so difficult to code for.
-
Jaguar for T2K over here...
Same.
Also an N64 just for Sin & Punishment, and an OG Xbox for Panzer Dragoon Orta. (it's always the rail shooters, for whatever reason)
-
Like many I thought about getting a Jag-u-ar for T2K but then I played the Saturn version. Not bad and has the awesome red book soundtrack.
-
There's certainly other playable games on it.
But 90% of all time I've spent playing Ngage games has been with Pocket Kingdom.
-
I bought a PC-FX just to play Zeroigear
-
One cool thing about Jags is you can still find them brand new in the box and for pretty much the same price as back in 93. Which in adjusted inflation dollars means you're getting it for like 40% off!
What other console does that?
-
My Xbox 360 isn't silent at all (Jasper chipset, so latest model of the fat line), but once games are installed on the HDD, the constant fan noise alone is quite acceptable. At least not some high pitched whine or constantly changing revs. I once wrote a guide how to install a genuine slim 500 GB HDD into the fat lady's caddy, I don't know if I posted that here on the forums too? Anybody interested?

Can't be louder than the Dreamcast.

Ah but that's a magical sound. wic, wic, wicwic, wic... screeshh...

I bought a £4000 PC just to play civilisation 2
-
I bought a £4000 PC just to play civilisation 2
Totally worth it... Seriously. I probably have several thousands of hours into that game.
This will sound bad... PS4 for call of duty. I ended up downloading some of the free games they offered and each year I grab the new CoD game to play with friends. Haven't bothered looking into any other games/series yet though.
Edit: I did buy FF7 on the PS4... excellent port with some nice add ons (the speed up 3x mode is great!) so I guess that makes the system two games. And technically I have three CoD games on the system now so I guess again that's four games total. Either way... whatever.
-
I'm not quite there yet, but I have bought Road Avengers in preparation for the start of a single game Sega CD collection. Like the rest of you folks this will likely lead to an expanded collection, but that's where it will start.
-
Years ago when it was still the new system I bought an og Xbox just for Panzer Dragoon Orta. I eventually got more games for it.
-
Recently got a Virtual Boy just for Vertical Force :P im a sucker for vertical shooters, especially from hudson soft!
-
Wait!!
I also want A C64 so I can play USAGI YOJIMBO.
So, gynt, that makes 2 one-off systems.
-
Recently got a Virtual Boy just for Vertical Force :P im a sucker for vertical shooters, especially from hudson soft!
Wait, that exists? GODDAMN, how did I not know this?
I love classic Star Soldier-esque shooters... is this Vertical Force decent?
-

Lol, i was surprised 2! But yeah, out if the 14 actual US released virtual boy games hudson soft put out a shoot em up! It is pretty decent! Only problem is you gotta play it on a virtual boy! :P
-
Honestly Virtual Boy has one of the best ratios of Good/Crap as far as games go. Many VB games are quite awesome. I really enjoyed Vertical Force and the Wario game (its a lot like Warioland on GB)
Bound High is excellent too... though I dont know how easy it is to find. I think it was an unreleased game that later some repros were sold of.
-
I have a dreamcast with Pier solar. I'm sure that will get some barbs thrown my way.

Havnt played any of the repros or homebrews but i do have the 14 US titles now and they are pretty fun! :) I really wish Nintendo would put them out in the 3DS store! Seems like a no brainer and an awesome way to be able to play em and preserve the virtual boy legacy!
@Senshi, get Mars Matrix & Cannon Spike and have a gay ol time!
-

Vertical Force is the main reason why I keep a Virtual Boy system around. Fun game but the Virtual Boy really strains my eyes.
-
I played a friends Virtual Boy back in the day and I remember having a problem with the heft and awkwardness of the unit on my head rather than eye strain. I think about getting one again though because of my love for the GB, and it's similarities to that - plus it seems to have some really cool games. Innsmouth no Yakata in particular strikes my interest with me being a big horror buff, but also Wario, Tennis, and a few others.
-
I got a Virtual Boy for Teleroboxer.
Ppl would come to my apartment on the weekends and would want to play it, and the rules were;
1. you had to do like 6 bong hits before you played it and
3. the first person without a migrane won.
...2 was forgotten around puff 4. Too many maths.
Needless to say I dont have a virtual boy anymore

Mine is way louder than the Dreamcast - sounds like a cement mixer... When it is loading it sounds like there are chunks of gravel in the drive...
-
If Sony / Naughty Dog made "The Last of Us 2" then I'd get a PS4.
-
A bunch for me, if not one game, then just a small number. I originally got the Lynx primarily for Robotron 2084, though I'm thinking of selling it. The 7800 I primarily keep for two games, Centipede and Robotron 2084.
The GameCube I kept primarily for Metroid Prime, though now I just use the Wii, which adds Wii Sports (my wife loves the boxing) to Metroid as two reasons for keeping it.
The PSP I bought primarily for Final Fantasy IV: After Years, though I've since found a few more to keep me satisfied. I can see myself selling it in a few years, though. Finally, I was keeping the NGCD around just for Sonic Wings III, but I think that's all going to go, too.
Edit: Oh, and I keep Steam around for a half dozen games, basically Portal, Civ, Road Redemption, Left 4 Dead, and Mortal Kombat IX.

I still think you should bring that back as your avatar again :P
-
I also feel like the PCFX is one of those systems where if you're not into hentai games, you buy it for Xeroigears and hope that one of the programming teams here is reading every one of your posts and will make something badass that will make your purchase worthwhile.
I'd like to say that I enjoy Xeroigeams and Battle Heat immensely but so far I've been frustrated with the small library.
And I will support any homebrew project that ports something to this console.
-
I think that wanting to own a PCFX is the same as wanting to own a PCE PrintBooster or Virtual Cushion. It's more about wanting to own a curiosity than to play any kind of game in it.
Let's be honest, you're not buying one because you MUST see the anime boobies in Pia Carrot or play any other game from a genre that's dime a dozen on other "normal" consoles.

Except...the virtual cushion can work with every single game/soundsource.
So...Virtual Cushion is universal product.
I am currently using my VC with 8-track home stereo.
And when I am on the toilet, my Vita.
:)

There are a handful of great FX games. Those of us that bought the good stuff years ago are quite happy.
-
I should revise my earlier statement.
I bought the Vita TV specifically for Ys IV and Persona 4 Golden.
buuuuut that library has expanded quite a bit since, so whatever.

They're similar, sure, but definitely not the same. The PC-FX has several legitimately good games, whereas the Print Booster (and Illust Booster and Photo Reader) is nigh useless.

Agreed. At least you can play the PC-FX. The print booster... well... you know necro, you have one :D
-
just remembered:
Initially :
imported a japanese sega saturn just for Virtua Fighter 2
imported a japanese launch dreamcast just for Virtua Fighter 3
purchased Gamecube for Phantasy Star Online I & II
bought and built a new pc for Phantasy Star Online 2
Interface unit and CD-Rom just for Wonder boy III
but then I ended up with a collection of games for all those systems except for the pc which was just for PSO2, photoshopping and youtubing
-
Dragon Force on the Saturn. I've got other games for the Saturn, but really the only reason I hang on to that console is Dragon Force. I've never played anything else quite like it.

I just tried to order this on Amazon Japan and the shipping is over $200!
Play-Asia charged more for the game, but shipping was $35, which seems okay for a big box.

I'll get whatever console Sony has available when the Last of Us 2 gets released. PS4 Pro VR Neural Evolving Involving. It's gonna be 20 times more involving than SAO. Or not.

I super wanted this until I realized the game disc is just the original arcade version of Darius. Still cool, but I thought it was a game collection and not an ost collection with one game attached. lol

There's at least 11 games.

Some of the crappy blogs just copy/paste the title and make something up.
Like the one I linked, which went of of their way to say that this is the first time there's been a disc-based port of the original Darius for a home console. They don't even bother to google before posting off the top of their heads.

There's rumors that darius burst will have a physical release for the PS4 next year.
