Just got a Turbo Express for $60. Very happy =P~
Thank you Keith Courage. You do great work.

It is in good cosmetic condition however it had a dead cockroach in the cartridge slot. I was able to clean it out mostly. I got a game to play on the screen with no sound through speakers but it has sound through the headphone jack. Now the video cut out but I am still getting sound through the headphones.
Anyway, I'm sure it needs a total cap replacement. Can anyone here recommend someone to do this work? Also might get the LCD screen mod. What about a battery upgrade? Are those worth it? I hear using Sony camcorder batteries are good. Thoughts?
-
I would recommend Keith Courage here on the forums he did some of my caps and did a spectacular screen upgrade for me. As for the batteries I just went with good recharge able AAs and I get great battery life with the screen upgrade. Good luck with it.

A t-to-the-bone deal/steal right there!
I would recommend thesteve if he's available if you want the best of the best, followed by turbokon, and if not, Keith.
I dunno what their prices are, but if any other potential problems develop, Steve will be able to handle almost anything as a fully professionally-trained electrical engineer.

Thanks Wolve. This system will be brought back to life. Mark my words. I can't wait to bust this out on the NYC Subway. I recently got an everdrive too. Gonna be a sick travel system.

Dead cockroach, my buddy owned a used video game store and I've seen him more than once open a console with some inside. Pretty nasty.
-
I work in a game store too. Better open that system and clean it out. Theres probably more inside.
-
Heck of a deal.
I had Keith Courage recap mine, and it is perfect, highly recommend him.
Congrats on the find!
-
Really great find but I would get it cleaned out asap lol. I love my TE it's a great system to compliment the home console.
-
Also, I echo the great find and 2nd the opinion to open it up and look for more roaches. Nasty critters! The TE was my first Turbo console, so I have a huge attachment to it. Recently I took it to work to play over my lunch break and someone commented that it looked like a UPS package scanner that's used for signature confirmation. Raiden is excellent on the go if you can find it.
-
I will open it up before I ship it our for repair.
Update: So I come home and my wife said she saw a roach on my desk. I had the TurboExpress there before I moved it to my underwear drawer to keep it safe from my cats. I immediately go to open up the TurboExpress and I was surprised how clean it was on the inside. However after snapping a few pics I did see a little baby roach appear. Guess this is what I should expect for $60. Anyway now what do I do? I am not gonna ship it out to someone with bugs in it. I put it in a Ziploc bag for now. So help me out. what should I do?
A.) Trash it
B.) Keep it in the zip lock bag and try to starve the buggers
c.) Something else... (any ideas are welcomed)
Update 7/21/16: I was thinking of sending it eStarland for repair. Anyone ever use them?

Don't think estarland would do a full cap replacement. That link you posted is probably just for the video caps.
Edit:
Autocorrect
-
I wouldn't send anything to a commercial company, not when there's so many talented peeps here that have more experience and will likely do a better job, especially if it ends up needing more than just caps.

I hear what you are saying but at the same time I feel bad about sending a system that has roaches in it to a member here. If anyone wants to take a chance with this system I can pay via PayPal right away. As you can see in the pics it is very clean inside. The roach was tiny but it was there. I figure a week in a sealed Ziploc bag should starve any of them. To be continued.....

Yeah screw that place. They want $45 for video repair and $45 for sound repair for a total of $90.

Because they are cold-blooded insects, cockroaches can live without food for one month.
-
Also if you desire my to hassle with repairing it let me know bill but it for your initial investment of $60

I was thinking of putting the system in the freezer to kill them. Would this have any negative affects on the system?

Not exactly sure what you are saying here... lol
PM coming

Blah sorry.
I you decide not to repaired the system and looking to "trash" I'd be interested in it.
Granted my getting around to have it repaired might be on a back burner I'd still be interested in it for giggles.

I had a ps2 where the ram went bad. So, I bought another ps2 from a small game store. I took it home and the DVD drive tray was kinda wonky. So, I decided I would just swap out the motherboard. Well I opened the shit up and holy f*ck it was an infestation. The smell was so bad! Thank god they were all dead. A run through the dishwasher...3 times got rid of the smell. Man I almost threw the shit across the room when I opened it. Why I didn't just take it back and throw it at them I don't know. "Here's you shit you sold me!" I'm sure they didn't know. They had stacks of ps2's. They just crawled in where the back fan was I'm sure. So, that was interesting haha.
BTW congrats on a turbob express.
-
I wouldn't consider this an infestation by any means. Check out the pics. I saw a tiny little baby crawl out. Other than that it looks really clean. Just wanna be up front with the modder that decides to take it, if anyone does.
-
This is one of the reasons I open every piece of hardware I've ever brought home. When I was on the road as an HVAC Tech I had to go in some nasty places. Even though I was careful a huge roach crawled out from somewhere on me while I was undressing one time. I caught it but, it scarred me for life on stuff like this.

I live in NYC and I buy stuff off the streets all the time. I have learned my lesson now. I am gonna open every cart and system before I bring it into my apartment.
-
Dude walked out. Never saw him again.
You'd never see me again if we were hanging out and you let a roach crawl onto me, sometimes you have to help a snoozing homie out null you should know that!

Watch out for bedbugs too. I visited NYC a few years back and was eaten alive by bedbugs. They're vicious and you definitely don't want to deal with them in your home.
Ever since, I've been paranoid about any used game, system or package that's shipped to me. I always open and clean any used items outside before bringing it in. Also toss the shipping boxes and/or packaging since you never know what could be hiding in it as well.
-
That's another plus for hueys: there is no 'inside' for the creepy crawlies to hide within.

Exactly why CARDS>CARTS
Definitions be damned.
-
Don't get me wrong, there are some roaches I like for sure.
-
I am also crazy paranoid about accidentally infesting my house so everything I get from thrifts and the like goes in the bottom of my freezer for a week or more just to be safe. We really don't have roach problems out here thank god.

So freezing systems will not harm them?
-
Most electronics are fine as long as you let 'em warm up in a dry place before trying to use 'em. Some LCDs, however, do not like the deep freeze.

It all happened so fast.
And f*ck that guy anyway.
Good looking out, null! What a guy! That'll teach him not to fall asleep at somebody else's place!

Put them with your food. Always works.... Eew!

Don't freeze it. You might get moisture on the board and moisture is a bad combo with electronics

I just triple bagged it and mailed it out to Keith Courage. He's willing to fix it.

That is such a find! I love handhelds, and I'm hoping to find an Express one day. Playing Nitro-Grafx on my DS just isn't cutting it anymore. The sound emulation is WAY off at best.
I hope you enjoy many hours of portable Turbo.

If you let the modder know about the roaches, they can decide on it. Opening it up outside and giving it a good cleaning shouldn't be too much trouble.
EDIT I missed KC is going to do it. Awesome!
-
We usually take consoles outside to open when we clean them. Most times though I can just smell the system and know. It is a very distinct smell that now I can even catch a faint scent of. We had one system at our store from a customer...
Ever watched "The Mummy" and see the scene when hundreds of scarabs come flooding out? No exaggeration, it was exactly like that. Gave me nightmares for weeks.
-
I bought an ebay SNES (boxed Killer Instinct edition) that was infested inside, and the smell was worse than bad caps. There were all dead, but corrosion had taken hold of the motherboard so I tossed it. I did save the white case and cleaned it with some Dawn, boiling soapy water, and an old dishbrush. That did it (and I was able to find a board for it later since the case was very nice after the cleaning).
From the pics it looks like you caught it early, no need to toss the system.
I have heard roaches are like lobsters, they are very sensitive to hot and cold.
In this case, I like the idea of a complete disassembly, clean the outer casing halves with hot water and Dawn. Perhaps blow out the PCBs with canned air (or an air compressor) and leave them in an area sprayed with RAID? It looks like you caught things very early on so there may be no further problems.
-
No need for the raid. Pull it apart and wash the shell, brush the pcb with a dry paint brush.

I've put electronics in the freezer before but not normally anything with a screen. Like necro said, as long as I let it get back to room temperature and avoid quick temp changs to avoid condensation I have been fine.
Oh, and no worries. Everything I put in deep freeze gets bagged in advance before it's stuck in the freezer chest. Yeah, sticking thrift finds next to my food would be gross.

My stomach twinged just reading this. What console was it?

I've bought stuff of the streets of Harlem with a lot worse stuff on/in them than roaches. I eat roaches for breakfast.

I've cleaned human shit off my daughters stroller. Make of it what you will. My wife calls me the Junk Yard Dog.

Sounds like a job for a hose. Apart that off and call it a day.

Nah, I like to get my hands dirty. Best part about that story is I ran up to wash my hands after cleaning the stroller and by the time I ran back down the stroller was gone. Gotta love Harlem.

I hope the child was not still in it, or else this is becoming a pretty dark story :|
