Title: New to the PC Engine
Post by: Tsavathay on October 26, 2016, 04:19:37 PM
Hello, Hello,
Just introducing myself to the pcengine forums, I'm Tsavathay. I'm Living in Canada and video games has always been apart of my life and growing up it was a special memory shared with my brothers. Systems I played most and their memorable games off the top are;
NES - Crystalis, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade edition, Super Mario World, Metalstorm, Megaman series SNES - Street Fighter 2 turbo, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Star fox, Killer Instinct, Axelay, Sega Genesis - Phantasy Star Series, Strider, Earth Worm Jim, Aero Blasters, Golden Axe, Thunder Force, Mutant league football, Sonic N64 - Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina Of Time, Killer instinct gold, Playstation - FF7, FF8, FF10, FF Tactics, Xenogears, Saga Frontier, Breath of Fire, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter EX, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Raystorm
That was my video game golden years - I'm older now and never was able to afford a turbo grafx/ pc-engine in those times. The two games I was able to play and remember and still love to this day are Dragon Spirit and Bonk! The rest I still need to discover...
I am savagely looking for either a IFU set up or a DUO-R RGB Modded system setup and would like to collect a modest but good quality collection of games. I am here to gain feedback/info on specific titles and learn from everyone here, just by going by my consoles/games from childhood listed, feel free to pm me with any info regarding which PC Engine console variation and titles to consider.
Anything will help... PM me!
I intend to update my games acquired list to keep the convos going.

Welcome! You could also look out for a recapped PCE Duo. It's just as good as the Duo R or Duo RX once it has been recapped.
Neutopia, Ys I and II, Ys IV, Lords of Thunder, coryoon, New Adventure Island are some of my favorites on the system

Thanks for this input everyone, hope I get opportunity to try these all.
Can u explain a bit further about playing translation(s) copies?
Well, Ys IV is the most obvious one. Just look around the forum a bit. Essentially, you rip the disc to your computer and replace parts of it with the translated material.

Rip your game using TurboRip (http://www.ysutopia.net/index.php?ind=downloads&op=entry_view&iden=8), apply the patch using whatever instructions it comes with, burn a cdr of the resulting ISO, and have fun!
Or use google to find a pre-patched ISO, which is what this dumb robot does because he's too dumb to run the patch properly.

I had some problems doing it the correct way as well. It took forever to get it right.

Welcome. Nice first post. Good selection of memorable games, good selection of pce you want to play. +1 just get a refurbished duo. They look nicer than R/RX. IFU is still sexy though.

PC Engine has a superior version of Aero Blasters
If you like Thunder Force, check out Gate of Thunder or W-Ring.
If you like Megaman, try SonSon II. It's also by Capcom, but more complicated. this site will help http://www.changevworld.com/sonson2/sonson2.htm
Adventure: Wonder Boy III, SonSon II, Neutopia 2, Ys IV, Momotaro Katsugeki
Miscellaneous: River City Ransom, Super Dodgeball, Tenchi Wo Kurau, Bomberman 94, Kaze Kiri

What is your favorite NES game, and why is it Crystalis?
Title: Re: New to the PC Engine
Post by: Tsavathay on October 28, 2016, 05:06:46 AM
Honestly - it has to be crystalis. It was my first action adventure RPG played and finished.
I loved it because: The story line was sick- just seemed to have no limits was vast and worldly. Tasks/side quests - some were very puzzling/challenging, some logical, but when you completed them (in the right order) the payoff is well worth it - u get to teleport, u get to ride a dolphin, u get meet Kensu/zebu...crazy gameplay! Ahead of its time The music - probably best ever Level up/battle system - 4 elemental swords, power boots, magic Characters/graphics
If anyone loved it too let me know ur thots or games on pc engine that can trump it??

You're my new best friend.

Took me (and all my brothers) forever to , the story seemed to have no limits,
Crystalis is pretty dawn awesome. I'm not sure of any on hucard that matches the atmosphere and music of that game. As far as CD games, I'm sure there are. Hudson really messed up be not doing a high quality Neutopia 3 on SCD. But Ys I&II on PCE CD is better than Crystalis IMO as an action RPG.

More like if you like Black Tiger, try SonSon II. It's a re-imagined game of Black Tiger (same game engine; same company). I never heard anyone comparing Black Tiger to Megaman though ;>_>

Yeah, I was gonna say...more like Shockman/Shubibinman is the blatant Mega/Rockman ripoff.

Need some advice doujindance had a duo-r for sale right now. It's been goin up and down off eBay. I want my first investment to be a good lasting one. I've read some feedback on forums.... should I wait for future opportunity on either ifu or duo-r?
I def want rgb mod.

There was a thread started here recently talking about how awful his mods were. Mickcris has some Duos here for sale with RGB mods.

I'll second Mickcris's Duo's.
Hard to find them at the price, fixed and modded anywhere else.
Also, I have been on a repairing spree lately fixing doujindance machines. There not worth it once you need to sink another $50 - $200 to repair what he put in the machine.

We're getting Neutopia III in 199X. Everyone just needs to be patient. Dammit

Avoid doujindance like the plague. You can buy a stock system and have one of the guys here on the forums mod it.

YES. It has been quite a headache for many users on this forum. Thanks, Woody.
Also, Tsavathay see this thread (http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=21431.0).

Thanks for sharing that vid Sunsteam Paul, I'll be reviewing it more in depth for sure because ...
I just purchased my first duo-r!
Won it off eBay auction, not modded or anything from Japan. Comes with street fighter and this babel game.
Very anxious now. Hope there are no surprises.
Contemplating asking seller to ship seller to ship directly to mickcris or KC to have it rgb modded/serviced (if their available) or should I ship to myself first....thoughts anyone?

I would ship straight to them. If there are any issues, they will find them before you. Maybe ask them directly what they recommend, though.

Depends on if the seller will ship to a different address. They may find it fishy if the name and address don't match the paypal address.

It's been a long time coming for this but I finally got my PC engine duo-r. Thanks to everyone here for there help and knowledge, and especially to Mickris for referring me to Leon in Toronto Canada to handle my RGB mod. He did a quality, professional job. Very highly recommended if your in Canada.
Here's a pic of my current set up.

Games I have at the moment are: Spriggan 2 Download Dragon spirit Ancient Ys book 1•2 R type Delta Hell fire
They all bring back amazing gaming memories. Does anyone have advice of how to play Ys? Can you link me to a guide or do you reccomend playing with translation patch?

No one made a translation patch for ys 1&2. Just download the US version instead. You then should be able to patch in the audio tracks from your disc if you really want the audio to be non compressed quality.

It's easier to find and download an uncompressed ISO.
