Y's Books I & II why do people love this game so much on the on TG16? it sucks.
1. The graphics look like a Sega Master System game.
2. You do this stupid attack where you just run into enemies, there's no skill or tactics involved.
3. The mazes are long and boring.

I imagine this is a period piece. It's still pretty fun today, and a lot of the things it does are easy to take for granted but were not happening in other games at the time, so I can only imagine what a mindf*ck blast it was bitd.

I disagree, at its worst it might pass for a SMS game, but at its best it is doing things that cant be done on SMS.

I think you may be underestimating the nuance and the subtle strategy involved. Your alignment with enemies is a major factor in terms of real time action application of the system, and your strategy for attacking groups of enemies and using spells is a huge factor in how successful combat can be. Also, the bosses are all unique and fun experiences. It's not the deepest RPG in the world, but for its time it was exciting and novel.

Agreed. The mazes were frustrating and I eventually looked up a map for a couple of them.

I agree about the attack; even back then I found it a bit silly. It's as if the designers / PC-88 etc gamers wanted to play one-handed for some reason.

For some, long is a good thing. Boring, or not, is just a matter of one's perspective that follows from what one wants from the length of dungeons or overworlds. "Long and involved" is just the flipside of the coin for some people.
I think people are reacting badly because of your sweeping, subjective (meaning from your point of view) statements ("sucks,", "boring") without the common formality of saying, "My opinion is that it sucks..."

lol'ing at trolling, but no joke, Solomon Shrine is an aggravating location and imo designed to pad out the game.

Going back to the graphics, even I was surprised by the TG-CD version. Again, here ( http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/ys/ys2.htm ), scroll down to 'Ys 1 Shrine' and you'll see the TG version's graphics are visibly superior to all versions prior to the Saturn, including, arguably, the X68000 port. :-O

Ah, but that became part of its charm! Adol rams into his foes, and the trajectory has to be plotted just right... A Milli-Vanilli chest bash, if you will. ;)

I have to say, I love the ramming mechanic in Ys I & II and I wish more games used it (you must execute it properly*).
I have never articulated the reasons why beyond a few sentences.
For me, it is about flow and rhythm...even if a graceful rhythm is unachievable, the constant movement is satisfying to maintain.
So, I like that I can just RUN AROUND in Ys. It feels so liberating for the ***genre***. The fact that I love shootemups/action/arcade/etc. should be a clue, too.
I grant you, this is simply something that I prefer...I have always brought my own, self-imposed rulesets to games (it probably started because I needed to make a game exciting again...even though I played it a billion times already). So, this can be partly blamed on lack of $$$. :)
MY IDEAL: I try to run around, as gracefully as possible, as much as I can in Ys I&II. I AM *not* speedrunning (I clarify the distinction below).
I liken it to this: in platformers, not only do I love running non-stop, but I try running at top speed non-stop. I like to generate a certain rhythm and flow (of course I have to pause/slow down at parts, but in general my goal is to keep moving gracefully---although I might have to jump gratuitously in basically the same spot, which really isn't too elegant or graceful, but it maintains the illusion that my character is moving).
Ys I & II: making Adol run "loops", "figure eights" or some other geometric shape/path is the equivalent to "hopping up and down" (in a platformer).
Notice...I am not talking about "speedruns" or things like that...because I will explore/visit all areas of a stage, even if they aren't actually "necessary" for progress.
My desire is to be more like a hummingbird (to keep moving, but curious to explore and travel everywhere)...I am not a terrorized gazelle speedrunning across the savannah in terror of a tiger.
Speedrunning has *some* room for "rhythm and flow", but the goal of speedrunning is NOT about "feeling good for zen flow" but "beating time barrier"
SO APPLY THIS PHILOSOPHY to action RPGs and you will see why I love the mechanics of Ys I & II.
* "ramming mechanic executed properly"...THIS MEANS THAT you need the proper ratio between sprite size and empty space and corridor layout (the perspective requires the camera to be zoomed out....if it is too "zoomed in" the mechanic falls apart).

I think it has to do with how well games age. Y's has aged pretty well imo, it's art style / overall presentation is spot on.
Although I've never actually played through FF7, I think it looks extremely outdated

I bought FFVII when it first came out. It wasn't a bad game. I've played FF since the first one, so that might be why I don't think VII is the greatest. For me personally, I love IX. It ties into the first game and the music is some of the best in the series.

Yessss, a non subjective opinion, It's good trying to look at these things as objectively as possible. I've heard 9 a few times from well rounded gamers, maybe i should pick it up.
I've only played a few of them, but i liked FF4 the best so far from what i've played

Yea. Definitely worth picking up IX. Great game. Just sucks that, like with VII it is on 4 discs. While playing it, you'll see references to the first FF.
