Title: New to the Forums -- Finally am ready to get my TG16 back & my TG16 story
Post by: Glokas on January 23, 2017, 02:27:53 AM
Hello,
.    I'm brand spanking new to this awesome site and I not only wanted to say hi, but I also wanted to share my story of owning a TG16 in the Mid 90's. I've also been looking around to finally get a TG16 again, but instead of getting the CD attachment, which I remember was very finicky, I was going to possibly get a PCE Duo or something like that. I was hoping to see if anyone here had suggestions or could maybe point me in the right direction. So yeah, hi everyone, I can't wait to post more and share in the love of Retro gaming, especially the awesome TG16/PCE!!! Here's my story:

So growing up poor in the 80's and 90's (I was born in '81), I was still playing NES and Atari while I watched all my friends get SNES and Genesis consoles, but I at least got to game over their houses while hanging out. But I was fortunate in the way that I got to really check out the latter part of the NES library and play amazing games like Power Blade (my personal favorite) and S.C.A.T. I saw stuff about the TG16 here and there in gaming mags and it fascinated me big time, but it was very obscure and there was no way my mom was going to be able to afford buying it in the store, even when they dropped in price.
.    So, I had a good friend that I hung out with a good amount and as fortune would have it, he had an older brother that at one point in time bought the TG16 and a load of stuff for it, including the CD attachment! Those 2 brothers had an SNES and Genesis, so that TG16 was just sitting. He hooked it up fir me one day and I was absolutely floored at the awesomeness of that machine. Every game was so vibrant and unique. I finally got to see and play what I read about over and over. I was in love. At this point, I hadn't even tried the CD portion cause I couldn't stop playing Blazing Lazers (I love Shooters/Shumps/BulletHell games), or Splatterhouse, or Bonk, or Ninja Spirit. This was the Console for ME and I knew it, right away.
.                                                                          Cut to a month or so later and I had my brother and myself frothing over this Console. I had been trying to buy this whole set up from my buddy's brother, but he would go any lower than $55 for it all. Now, I'm going to list, to the best of my memory, what all I got when I bought it and it'll probably make some people fist pump. But then again, at the time, nobody in the US cared about this system. So, after getting all the money I had saved from my birthday that had recently passed, I sold a few beloved CDs, VHS tapes and an NES cart to a Pawn shop, I had $52 in folding cash and another $3 in change. I actually used two 50 cent pieces out of my rare coin collection. So, he drove over, and brought everything in. Which was more than I knew he had and my brother and I were beyond excited. He took about 5 minutes to show me how everything worked and how to hook it up (which was like all systems back then).
.                                                 So here is what we got for $55: The TG16 Console (No back cover, all appropriate OEM wires), the regular OEM controller, a large OEM Joystick controller, The entire CD Attachment with the Turbo CD Hu Card. Now I'm going to list all the games I remember, they all had the Jewel Cases and little cover on the Hu Card games. Ok, Hu Card games: Blazing Lazers, Splatterhouse, Bonk, Ninja Spirit, Dragon Spirit, R Type, China Warrior, TV Sports Baseball and Football, Jackie Chans Action Kung Fu (I think), Super Adventure Island, and 2 other Shooter games I can't remember the titles of though. CD games: Fighting Street, Ys Books 1&2(I think that was the name), Addams Family, and 2 other games I can't remember the titles of either.
.                                                                                                 So yes, all that for $55. I felt like the coolest person ever and my brother and I were so happy. I had friends coming over that wanted to see the origin of Street Fighter and just to say they played a Turbografx 16! Plus, at that time the Sega CD had not come out yet or had just come out. So no one I knew had ever played games on CD before. It was a glorious time in my childhood and I appreciate anyone that read through it and, hopefully, enjoyed it.
.                                                                          All that being said, I'm ready to finally get my TG16 back (I have a few of the CD games still but everything else vanished during a move in the late 90s). I'm also looking to get the PCE of course, since there are tons more games. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I put some cash aside specifically for this, so I'm ready and able. I do want to make sure I go about this the right way though. I don't want to buy a Console that's going to kick a few months after I get it. I'm also going to post alot on the forums and check out the entire site. I just thought before I did anything, I would introduce myself and share my TG16 childhood story. Thanks for listening....Corey

Welcome to the forums.  I recommend you get a refurbished PC Engine DUO from a member here.  Best way to jump right in at a good price point.  I have had great success with Keith Courage.  Even better if you get it with a region switch.

Welcome, and its extremely refreshing to see a member with a cool story/introduction.

Hope we can all be of help to ya. I will echo what others have/will say. Contact Keith Courage, get a Re-capped JP DUO, get a region mod, and/or a Everdrive, and go ham on the games. Generally the DUO's are less picky about Burned games so getting a DUO and burning the CD games, and using an everdrive to play Hue card games, you can pretty much play everything doing that.

Welcome again, and awesome story!

Thanks so much for not only the welcome, but all the kudos and awesome suggestions. I've been checking out eBay quite a bit, but alot of what's on there seems very pricey. I'm willing to pay, but I wanna be sure I do the right thing. I know I absolutely want the actual TG16 Console. Just for the fact that I once owned it. Even though I owned the CD Attachment, I'm willing to forgo that amount of nostalgia just to save me the trouble in the long run. I've heard PCE Duo consoles, especially the RX types, are the way to go. I figure with that and a TG16, I'm pretty much set. Do you guys think that's a good idea? I definitely feel like the people on this forum are the right people to ask. From what I've seen so far, there are alot of great people posting here! Thanks alot everyone. I'm very excited!!!

Awesome first post and welcome to the forum.  TG16+ PCE Duo/R/RX (recapped) is a solid setup if you want to play all region of games without doing any mods to them and not have a ton of overlap.  There are some threads in the PCE sales section with sellers that have a proven track record of doing a great job.

What xele said.  A region modded PCE Duo (any version - once recapped, they're all relatively reliable) would be cheaper, but most economical isn't always the most fun.

My only additional recommendation is to get a PCE tap modified to fit the TG-16, that way you can buy all mini-DIN controllers rather than investing in controllers that only work with the TG-16.

Man. You guys are great. This is really an amazing site and I never would have expected such excellent responses. I know I can be long winded and it means alot that you guys have read all that. It was an extremely important thing in my life, which I know might seem ridiculous to some, but the way I grew up meant that anything I got was so important. I think back to those times so fondly and I'm very happy to share this story with people that truly can appreciate it not only for content but because I know I'm not the only one that grew up like that. Unfortunately I didn't get added onto the site until this morning, right before work, so I can't check out too much right now, but ill be sure to between tonight and tomorrow.
.                 I'm glad I can at least take a few minutes to respond and let everyone know how much I appreciate these replies to my post. I'm so ready to get my TG16 back, I can taste it! I've definitely thought about it alot lately and I'm absolutely going to go with a PCE Duo of some kind but that 11/12 year old part of myself NEEDS to have that TG16 console. I can't explain it in words but I know most of you know Exactly what I mean!

Welcome! and good story! I also got the tg-16 because it was cheap, and I couldn't afford anything else! I started working (semi-legally) at age 8 and saved up the little money I got from that, and a couple birthday checks to get a turbo in the early 90s too... I've never looked back or sold any of my stuff :P

Also, this is a good way to make your first post, unlike all these folks who just show up asking for things! Also, by the way, I do have a couple extra tg-16 consoles - no hookups, but if you want to search that down, maybe we can work something out. Will trade for saturn games :P

This brought back a memory of desperation for me. Very stupid younger me. Had a friend that had an extra McDonald's Happy Meal Knuckles toy. Would only give it to me in exchange for a silver dollar I got from a relative. It was maybe special. Oops. lol

Anyway... fun introduction. Thanks and enjoy your stay.

All excellent suggestions here. I definitely am checking up on this stuff tonight. I've done a good amount of research already, but you guys have shown me that there's alot more to look into. Its awesome that alot if people relate to my story but also like it. I'm known for being extremely over descripted, but I just had to tell ny TG16 story thoroughly and in It's entirety. I'm gonna try and contact a few of you guys tonight or tomorrow. I hope that's cool. Thanks again!

It is hard to communicate, with words, all the sincere feelings of excitement during moments like the one you described (finally getting TG-16)... but even the jaded bastards here know what it is like to finally find something for TG-16/PCE.

:)

MY TWO CENTS:

Don't hate me, but get TED. :)

Now, I own lots of hardware and games, but I am going to shift to using Turbo EverDrive (TED) for future games I don't currently own.

I've owned the damn TED for a long time (2 years?), but I have yet to set it up.

I mention TED because I think your best plan is to buy cheap games (because it's fun), but not to purchase stupid expensive titles.

Just a thought.

Welcome to the site.Id,suggest a modded pce-duo that's been recapped and you're set.It doesn't hurt to buy a turbo everdrive either. The TED will let you play the more expensive games on hucards plus fan translations to.

I'm definitely going to do the Everdrive. I mean, not only for all the unique stuff but I don't think ill ever be able to afford Magical Chase! Several people on here have suggested that, along with a re capped PCE Duo, which is a great idea. I'm definitely going to get at least a standard TG16 for that childhood nostalgic feel. I have so many Retro consoles left over from my youth, it'll fit in like it had never disappeared.

Man, I have this guy on eBay that has the TG16, controller and all the hookups. Plus he has 14 games with it and most of em are with the cases. He has Bonk, Splatterhouse, Ninja Spirit, R Type, Blazing Lazers, and a bunch other. I made an offer a week ago and he said he is willing to take $275 for it. What do you guys think? He says the system works and is in good condition,  it you never know with that stuff. I just figured id throw that out there on this thread since everyone has been so amazingly helpful from day one. I'm really loving this site, I feel right at home.

Link it here.  Depends on condition and if games are CIC or CIB.

Assuming the other 9 games aren't all Keith Courage and TV Sports titles, that sounds like a decent deal.

All games and system were tested and played, some games you need to turn the on off switch a couple times but they work....

**All items are sold *AS IS - *UNTESTED unless other wise noted.

Coupled with the 85% New! condition shown in the pics, that statement is rather scary.  It might still be a good deal, needing nothing but a simple cleaning, but it's a gamble.

Alright guys. I know I'm soaking my own thread here but I made, what I think, was a great deal with him. We talked back and forth a bit and I explained how much I love TG16 and gave him a little back story of my history with that amazing console. He seem to relate to me and actually wanted it to go to someone that appreciated it as he did. It was his console growing up. Not everything is perfect on it and I'm going to refurbish everything myself and maybe check out some mods or recap services through some of the awesome people on this site. So, all that being said, he gave it to me for $260 with free shipping. I just couldn't pass it up. It had so many of my favorite games and the console and all that looks decent, Plus it'll be a fun project I think.
.                                                   Do you all think it was a good buy? You know, considering everything it came with and the fact that I like to refurbish my own Retro Consoles? Everyone here has been so cool and helpful all in just a single day of being a part of this site. I really wanted to possibly spend my money with someone here, but this deal was just so good, it was almost tailored specifically for me. I went a little over budget cause I was only looking to get the Console itself right now and maybe a game or 2. This was worth it to me though. Thanks so much for all the input, I love reading everyones replies!

Auction ended, did you end up buying it?  If so I may have a spare back cover I would give you since you came, introduced yourself and provided an awesome story of your experience with the console instead of making a bunch of WTB Magical Chase for $10 type threads in the for sale section.

I figured that Tbone. It's cool. Ball busting just makes me feel like part of the family. I initially tried $200, just to gauge where his line was set and originally he didn't wanna go under $275, but after a few rounds of messages, he went $260 shipped.

Hey Desh. Yes sir, he let me have it for $260 shipped. I'm so excited about that purchase, I can't explain it. I would definitely purchase a back cover from you if you have an extra. Do you think I should invest in a Turbo Booster at all? I forgot to ask that before and with all the modding and all that, I thought it was maybe not worth the cash. I'm so glad people are digging my story and relating to it. I know it was a wall of text and I can be wayyy over descriptive, but I just felt like it would really let people know that this is more than a gaming console to me. This is going to be a devotion!!!!

Oh, I'm sorry Desh. I would gladly except a back cover for free as well!!! I would of course pay any shipping price. I didn't mean to be insulting or anything by saying I would buy it from you. I just want to make sure that people know I'm not some New Guy that wants hand outs from awesome people. I see some folks trying to take advantage of all the cool, very gracious and just downright helpful, folks on this site.

Anything would be better than the standard RF but I personally wouldn't invest in a Turbo Booster or Turbooster plus.  If you're using a more modern T.V. I would suggest doing the component mod or RGB/SCART mod.  mickris and Turbokon are the guys that supply video mods on this forum or you can build your own.

As far as the back cover goes I don't want to sell it to you, I'll just give it to you.  PM me your shipping info and I'll send it out.

Don't buy a TurboBooster or TurboBooster+.  They're stupidly expensive.

You can tap composite off the expansion port for cheap, or go with a video upgrade as suggested by Desh.  For whatever ridiculous amount a TurboBooster+ goes for nowadays, you're better off putting that money towards a Duo with its built in save capabilities.

Ah, yes. That's exactly what I was thinking. You both are absolutely right. That's what I'm going to do. Once I get the console in, ill probably make another post about the condition, and my refurbishing status. Plus, if anything is wrong or if I might need a few pointers. I'm very good at taking stuff apart and fixing it. I've cured 2 PS3 RLOD/YLOD, all myself. But when I was a kid, I never tinkered with my TG16 or the CD attachment for fear of messing it up or not being able to reassemble it properly. It was, of course, before the internet age, I was a kid and my toolset was limited to basic screwdrivers and tweezers.

May I ask how you cured the RLOD/YLOD?  I sent mine out to a repair shop and it was fixed for about a month or so then the same thing happened again.

Tbone: I bought some decent thermal paste at Best buy, I took the consoles apart, basically breaking em down to their component parts. I removed Sonys horrible Thermsl Paste job completely from the CPU and GPU. I used straight up Isopropyl Alcohol. Then I wrapped the entire board in tin foil, only leaving those 2 main processor chips exposed. I grabbed a semi deep style cake pan and pkaced the board on top of it so that air go above and underneath it. I turned my oven on 200 and placed the board on the pan in right away, no preheating, for 10 minutes. Then after the 10 minutes, I kicked it up to 450 for another 5 minutes, then I shut it off and left it sit in there for about 2 hours or so. I took it out and removed the tinfoil, it was completely cooled, I reapplied the Thermal Paste the Correct way, not globbing it all over, just a Pea size or so in the center of each Chip, that way when you put it back together and the Heatsinks push down, it spreads out very nicely. Then I reassembled and they both work perfectly. The fan even runs much more smoothly.
.                                                                This is by no means a Troll post. I Really did exactly what I described, Oven, Cake Pan, Tin foil and all. I have a Zero failure rate so far for it. The Oven seems to perfectly re liquify the broken solder joints evenly and by letting it cool, it perfectly sets. My oven didn't really smell weird either, cause I thought it might. I noticed a little smell the same day, but not the next day. I could probably do this for people and I wouldn't charge anything. I just like to help out fellow gamers. Sony will charge you insane amounts of money fir this and most of the time they just send you another console, which will probably have the same issue. Which said issue seems to be lazy ass application of the Thermal Paste, leading to cracking in those solder joints. They used very cheap Lead free solder I believe. It might not hurt to re paste a PS3 before it happens.
.                                                        it's funny you mention the hair dryer thing. That will actually destroy the console in the long run. Think about this: If the heat from the hair dryer is swelling the board to the point of temporarily liquifying the solder joints a bit, it's probably melting alot of other stuff. I would think that if you're just going that to trade in the console to Gamestop, then have at it I say. But that console will stop working again and be worse than it was. Although GS can afford to take a PS3 loss I'm sure!

k

Hello,

I love the Trolling actually, makes me feel at home! I'm just glad everyone can handle my over detail walls of text. I'll try to shorten em once I'm settled though. I promise. I'm just so damn excited finding this amazing site and all these awesome people. I wish I would've come here years ago honestly.

Welcome!

Not to be a downer but there are a few predators  (not here) so be cautious. Mainly on the CD side but boots of hu cards are known.

Do you all think it was a good buy?

I think it doesn't matter.  If you're happy with the purchase then it was a good buy.  Welcome aboard.

I'm not sure if the deal I got when I was a kid could even be found in a Thrift Store nowadays. When I got that lot from my friends brother, I talked him down like $25 and it was at that time where nobody cared about the TG16 anymore, they were being sold cheaply, and it was really an unknown console in the states for the most part still. I knew how much of a hidden masterpiece that console was, not only from what I had read in gaming mags of that time, but he let me play it also. I was so poor, we didn't even have a CD player at that time. If I remember correctly I used the CD player to listen to music as much as playing games on it! I'm pretty sure I also got an Auxiliary wire for my stereo (which had a Turntable and 2 Cassette decks), and I was able to use the detachable CD player to play music CDs that way through my stereos speakers. The TG16 purchase I made that day was really a life changer for me in alot of ways. Then and now honestly. I see games in a different way thanks to the TG16. It also made me feel like I was part of this exclusive club that a vast majority of my friends, no matter how rich or well off their families were, did not belong to. They were coming over to MY house to not only hang out, but enjoy gaming on a console they never had.
.                                                      Man, there are so many stories and just great things I can tell and say about the TG16 that its unreal. I would love a Hot tub time machine just to see the looks of happiness on mine and my brothers faces every time we played our TG16! That would be the best thing ever.

That sounds familiar. I remember playing CDs through the TG-CD, listening through the TV speakers. I also remember the first time I realized that I could play a CD while playing a separate TurboGrafx game. I would play TV Sports Football while listening to the Ys Book I and II redbook audio. Good times.

Quick Update:

Not sure how many people are still checking this thread at all, but I paid for that awesome TG16 lot on the 24th of January and it still hasn't even been Shipped yet! I mean, I get it, some people do eBay on the side. He'll, I do that myself. But ive never taken this long to package and ship something. I messaged the Seller and he has had a busy week and promised to have it shipped by this week at the latest. I thought he meant Monday or Tuesday though. Dammit, I'm so excited to get this lot in. I'm gonna post some pics on here for opinions and what not, Plus I'm going to make a YouTube video of it on my Channel.  Complete with my personal TG16 story, which alot of people seem to enjoy, but also lots of great info about the TG16 itself. I'll probably do a nice overview of it and all that. I got all these parts and wires to create my own AV cable and it's like I'm just staring at them, waiting. Ughh, this shit is so frustrating. I mean, $260 is no small amount of money to me by any means. I even offered to pay some kinda expedited shipping costs, when he finally replied. I haven't heard anything back since that eBay message. Plus, zero shipping status and/or Upayes

Necro: I know man. I'm really hoping that isnt the case. But he seemed very genuine and happy to see his childhood system go to someone that will cherish it. On a good note I got in some Female D Sub connectors to create my own AV cable (I absolutely love doing shit like that on my own). They look like a perfect fit for the pins on the expansion port. I've made tons of cool custom cables. Like my own Genesis Model 1 AV cable using paper clip pieces. And I made my own Female USB to Male Original Xbox cable for soft modding and using flash drives and what not. Oh and the very AWESOME Desh sent me a back cover for my TG16 that is coming in!!!! I offered to pay for it or at least for the shipping, but he wouldn't have it. That is one kick ass, generous and first class gentleman there. I never had one of those before, so I will cherish it. I even made a Facebook post about it. Yeah, I know. I'm a f*cking nerd.

And an upright citizen.

:)

Also, I approve of the kinky references to Female D and Male D.

We all need some D, it seems.
