I came into contact with someone who used to distribute/work with SNK back in the 90's/early 2000's, and now he has a bunch of TurboGrafx 16 stuff for sale. Only problem was he lives like 9 hours away.
Guy lives out in the middle of nowhere, so when he posted locally he got some pretty bad offers. He told me he's been burnt in the past by the whole Paypal business/shipping thing, so he prefers local. And he was offering a great price for a cash in hand deal. The guy said if he's already shipping, he might as well go on Ebay and get full value; which makes sense I guess.. but I wasn't going to let that happen!
It sounds ridiculous flying to meet him, but I had access to some pretty cheap flights through standyby passes. $85 CAN round trip. So like $60 USD lol. Saves me money and time, so I said why not?
In the airport as we speak waiting for my flight out, but here it is

Congrats on the sexy lot. How much did it end up setting you back and how in the world are you gonna get it home?

Thanks man, highlight of my month for gaming
I brought a big ass durable suitcase with blanket that should fit the console boxes perfectly. I did a practice run the night before and found the perfect case for transporting them. For the cardboard & games, i'll take with me on carry on. I don't know if I would go through border customs with this stuff, but security within Canada seems pretty mild.
$700 USD would have been the final price converted
-
Cool story, but I wouldn't pay $700 to own that. For flipping, sure, great deal, but that doesn't seem like $700 worth of fun to me.

I'm hoping to use the conplete consoles/ and duplicates to trade for other TG16 stuff I want. $700 is a big chunk of change though, but I figure it'll save me in the long run if I'm trading with people pricing stuff by eBay.
-
Maybe I am missing something, but I don't see $700 of value there?
With that said, I love going on adventures and for some reason love flying, so I think the fun of going and getting this stuff is better than the haul.

by some peoples pricing, bomber '93 is $500 alone (THAT CARDBOARD!!!)
Add up 3 boxed consoles at $300 each and he's well in the black.

Oh wow haha. A good friend of mine wanted to check out the system so I told him $150USD for the fully CIB one. $300 though damn, I had no idea. I guess I'm stuck in the time when I first got mine
-
awesome pick up and It sounds like you had fun working out the logistics with the deal
YOLO
-
I'm sure gynt was being sarcastic, but realistically the Air Zonk, Bomberman 93 and one CIB console should cover your cost basis for sure. Nice grab!
-
So 3 boxed TG-16's and two loose (with dust covers!!!)? About 20+ games, most complete...load of controllers. I see you definitely selling off a majority of the lot and keeping a few choice items for yourself, end up with a net zero plus you'd have some new obey. Of course if the original seller did not want to deal with ebay, that might say something. I hope to see for FS: threads soon from you!
Goes to show, there is still some out in the wild finds to be had.
-
That dude's face on the console box is funny.
-
Wow, that's a heck of a bundle. Lets hope your luggage doesn't mysteriously disappear due to the baggage handlers, safe travels!!
-
I wouldn't have spent $700 but that is a good haul in this day and age. You'll recoup a good deal to get what you want. BTW i can already hear the lurkers PMing you. BEWARE!!!!!!!
-
would be brutal if he sold it before you arrived

Eh i'm just hoping to trade the extras, the way I see it is i'll eventually be spending $700 on PCE/TG stuff over time. So i'm thinking the extras could be used to obtain other stuff thats priced crazily. So even though I wouldn't price a CIB TG16 at $300, I would if I was trading with someone who was also pricing their stuff with fleabay.
And yeah! My goal with posting this was to show that stuff is still out there. Like even though he used to work for SNK blah blah.. this guy's stuff was the accumulation of his co workers TurboGrafx stuff, in which he put it in his attic for 17 years.

Didn't wanna risk the game boxes being crushed/opened in checked luggage. So I took them carry on haha

Everything got home safe and sound! I'm hoping to have time this Tuesday to go through it all.

Oh god, I didn't even wanna think about that. But that is a very likely thing to happen, especially on some free local buy/sell page.
He told me his name and all this company info. So I was able to look him up and verify that he was legit, but still. Stuff still happens that neither of us can control..
-
well ballsy move, dude. that is some A+ dedication to save this stuff.
well done.

Lol, that's interesting.
I don't know Arabic and was trying to do a twist on 'Allahu Akbar' (God is great(est)!) with the words bomb, man, and great(est). Maybe I mixed it up so it says Greatest Man (Fat Man?) Bomb.
This is why I should never go abroad I guess.

I think it's safe to say we're both on federal watch lists now

That is an excellent find. Congrats, man!
The Turbo-Grafx box alone takes me back to the good ole' days. I remember walking through Kay Bee toys and seeing all three 16-bit consoles in the glass case. The TG section wasn't nearly as prominent as Sega's and Nintendo's was, but it had a little nook carved out at the tail-end of the case. As usual, boxed consoles were placed at the bottom; there were four TG-16's compared to the dozen or so SNESs and Gennys.
Oh, if I could do the late 80's/early 90's all over again...

King of Casino.
'nuff said.
Just kidding, I haven't played the game much (yet? Perhaps the future will bring us together?)

I love hearing stuff like this. I only have extremely vague memories of the Canadian store RadioShack carrying some stuff; nothing crazy.
For some reason I was picturing a "nook" large enough to walk inside and look around. The walls covered with boxed games, and kiosks plugged in showing off games.

Thanks man, still haven't checked out Falcon yet. But i've been told its name should be "sky boat"

I don't think you understand what a "lot lizard" is. Or maybe you do, and that's how you funded your hobby...

That's a pretty insane lot you got there, I may be a little jealous lol. I just wish I was old enough to be able to start collecting when this stuff was cheaper.
