Title: Turbografx-Mini coming to the US in 2018? (Fantasy OBEY)
Post by: _joshuaTurbo on June 27, 2017, 04:06:07 AM
It's not.  But, Konami did file for a trademark (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/12/konami_files_fresh_trademark_for_turbografx_in_the_united_states) of "Turbografx-16" this year, so mayhaps they're planning something?  Who knows...

But, just playing fantasy TG world here, with the NES and SNES Mini's hitting the market, would you want to see a Turbografx-Mini?  Would you buy one?  The SNES mini is coming packed with 21 games.  Some of the best games that showcase the system's most popular games.

What would you choose for the 21 games to be included in your Turbografx-Mini?

Let's say this, you get 20 games (HuCard, CD, or even SCD) ALL US TITLES, and then you get the choice of any unreleased PCE (HuCard, CD, SCD) JAPAN ONLY game.  What is your perfect selection for the TG-Mini?

I think you'd have to make sure you had some coverage of emblematic games for the system, even if there are some better ones available. For example, I don't think you can leave off Keith Courage.

I'd say:

1. Keith Courage in Alpha Zones
2. R-Type
3. Blazing Lazers
4. Bonk's Revenge
5. Air Zonk
6. Neutopia
7. Bomberman '93
8. Devil's Crush
9. Dungeon Explorer II
10. Gate of Thunder
11. Lords of Thunder
12. Military Madness
13. Parasol Stars
14. Ys Book I & II
15. Cosmic Fantasy 2
16. Magical Chase
17. Legendary Axe (or LA II)
18. Ninja Spirit
19. Splatterhouse
20. Ys III (if only for the soundtrack)

JP game: I can't see this being anything other than Dracula X.

Edited to switch out Bonk's Adventure for Splatterhouse.

There's games I have yet to experience, but from my current standpoint I would pick these. It's hard to balance out the different genres, especially genres you're not 100% with. For me that's sports and point/click adventures.
Hard to narrow down 5 shooters, although it would probably be naturally out of balance as that's what people remember the TG16 by.

1. Bonk 1
2. Devils Crush
3. Neutopia 1
4. Soldier Blade
5. Y's book 1&2
6. Parasol Stars
7. Magical Chase
8. Dragon's Curse
9. Legendary Axe
10. Beyond shadowgate
11. Dungeon explorer 2
12. Final Twin Lap
13. Ninja Spirit
14. Air Zonk
15. Dragon Slayyyaaa
16. Bomberman 93
17. Cotton
18. Splatter house
19. Lords of Thunder
20. World court tennis

(insert Dracula X hype)

Only one JP-only game really limits my choices... I mean seriously, I'd totally want Street Fighter II, Bomberman '94, Dracula X, Detana Twinbee and Valkyrie no Densetsu in there! (To name a few) But oh well, let's see...

1 - Bonk's Adventure
2 - Bonk's Revenge
3 - Air Zonk
4 - Gate of Thunder
5 - Lords of Thunder
6 - Magical Chase
7 - Cotton Fantastic Night Dreams
8 - Super Star Soldier
9 - Soldier Blade
10 - Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu
11 - New Adventure Island
12 - The Legendary Axe 2
13 - Ninja Spirit
14 - Neutopia
15 - Dragon's Curse
16 - Ys books 1 and 2
17 - Ys III Wanderers from Ys
18 - Bomberman '93
19 - Bloody Wolf
20 - Devil's Crush

JP-only game - Asuka 120% Maxima Burning Fest
As a big Fighting game fan I just HAD to have one in there, I know Dracula X would be the one game to get everyone hyped, and I know I could have picked Street Fighter II since it's the more iconic fighting game, but honestly, Asuka is better than Street Fighter IMO, it can be played with only 2 buttons, you can already play Street Fighter II in practically every other game system ever, and personally, Asuka is the game that would get me hyped the most! (Yes, even more than Dracula X)

Side note, isn't it weird how most fighting games on the system require an arcade card, but the two best ones don't? I mean, SF2 is a Hu-Card game and Asuka is a Super CD-ROM² game, and they both wipe the floor with practically everything else on the system! Not that the other fighters on the system are bad, well, 3 of them are, but the rest are all at least okay, but seriously, Asuka and SF2 just are better...

NOT ONE LIST HAS CHINA WARRIOR ON IT.

Look mate, I like China Warrior too, probably more than the average PCE fan, but when we can only pick 20 US games + 1 JP-only/Unreleased game we have to draw the line somewhere, and China Warrior just doesn't quite make it >w>

But if it does for you, then hey, more power to you! Heck, why not make your own list with it included?

Yeah I get that, I said I like it after all, and I mean it!
But as I said in my original comment, you gotta draw the line somewhere when you're so limited in what you can pick...

Well damn, this is tougher than I thought it would be, but here goes (TurboChip only):

1. Air Zonk
2. Alien Crush
3. Blazing Lazers
4. Bonk's Adventure or Revenge
5. Cadash
6. Chew-Man-Fu
7. Dead Moon
8. Dragon's Curse
9. Dungeon Explorer
10. Galaga '90
11. Keith Courage
12. Legendary Axe 1 or 2
13. Magical Chase
14. Military Madness
15. Neutopia
16. Ninja Spirit
17. Soldier Blade
18. Splatterhouse
19. Super Star Soldier
20. Vigilante

I may have gone a bit heavy on the shmups and I'm not thrilled about Vigilante but gotta represent beat-em-ups and China Warrior is NOT worthy.  <ducks and covers>  Jackie Chan would probably be a better choice.

Magical Chase also is not worthy, but it would sell the system.  You can replace that one with just about anything for my list: Bomberman, Fantasy Zone, Samurai-Ghost, Bloody Wolf, hell even Tricky Kick to add another puzzler.

Am I the only who who isn't interested at all in any of the mini game systems? They all just seem pointless to me since they are all emulation. So if they are emulation, why not just use a Nintendo Wii, Original Xbox, raspberie pie, or PC to emulate the games. I also think the same when it comes to the Retron 5 and or Retro Freak. They are both emulation so why bother when much cheaper emulation options are available.

The only thing good about a Turbografx mini is it would be any easy way for people who do not own any tg16 games or hardware to get into the system. Especially with the difficulty of tracking down some of these games now.

I think most folks who have real hardware or who don't mind playing at desktop/laptop agree with you.

Clearly, Nintendo is aiming these products at a MAINSTREAM MARKET. Never, ever was their motive to appeal to the niche sub-sub culture of _____. Nintendo knows that *no* product would satisfy the finicky tastes of "enthusiasts"....

The market is really aimed at folks who want something:
(1) dead simple (plug-n-play) on modern HDTV

(2) to give to their kids (my kids are older, so now I allow them, and their friends, play on my consoles, but I am worried that they abuse the crap out of stuff and might break something one day...but I try not to think about that and hope for the best)

(3) novelty/nostalgia  (I don't *need* more stuff, but, damn, I was willing to buy the NES and SNES because I am curious—the build quality and interface is far superior to all the crappy Intellivision, Dendy (j/k), Genesis, Atari 2600, Colecovision, etc. "clones" I have tried over the years...)

Personally, I stopped emulating a long time ago (early 2000's) because it was a distraction from all the consoles and handhelds I owned...and I realized that I love the unique, tactile experience of stock machines and stock pads/controllers.

However, the only way I'll be able to play arcade games again will be via emulation...so, I know that I'll be heading back to emulation one of these years...plus, the only way I'll play all the Japanese computer platforms will be via emulation. Emulation is in my future, definitely, but I'm in no rush—I think I am the outlier. Most folks are impatient and want everything. Now.

I honestly think it would be a great idea but make the system look like a mini us tg16. Hell keep the controllers the same and same length since they are only like 4-5 ft.

But you have to remember this the average American growing up in the 90's may have never seen or played a tg16. So they have no idea what its about and you have to get games on the list that everyone has heard or knows so the main ones would be that all my friends or anyone who has been a gamer growing would know
bonk
keith courage
legendary axe
r type
vigilante
splatter house
alien crush
and for imports the two biggest names would be of course
street fighter
castlevania

Then you can fill the rest with shmups and games like neoutipa and other stellar games.
The negative side on this would be that the actual system and games might jump even more in price because now the average gamer would look deep into the tg16 and find out what a gem and the library is. Or it could just sell out the tg16 mini like the nes to where the consumer wouldn't even think of buying a tg16 because of the games and just get the mini

Are they really cheaper?  A pc is only cheaper if you already own one, but they're usually not something you have (or want) in the living room. A pi wouldn't be much cheaper, not by the time you bought it, a power supply, a nice case, an sd card, and a pair of controllers.  A used Wii or Xbox would be cheaper, but not by much if you want a pair of proper "classic" controllers.

Also, cost isn't the only factor.  Any of those options could save some money, but none of 'em will work right out of the box or be as user friendly.

<<raises hand>> I'm not interested either, but I was happy to see so many people excited about NES games when the NES Classic came out.  However I already have all the games and never stopped playing them, so I wasn't the target market for it.  I admit seeing Starfox 2 included on the SNES Classic is pretty cool, but I'm still going to pass.

A limited number of games makes it the most expensive option no matter what.

Damn it's tough to whittle down a list even only using U.S. stuff.  To keep a good mix of genres on it this would have to be my list:

DoxPhile chat said you were dead last night! Where have you been?!

Ridiculously busy.  Between all of kids' sports and other activities, I got into computers and have been building like a madman (I got really good at reviving dead GPU's BTW) and also bought a shitty golf cart I'm rebuilding/ modding because we can drive them on the streets in my area now.  Also, being a parasite is kind of a full time thing.

A limited number of games makes it the most expensive option no matter what.

True, though there's surely some value in using the roms legally, plus there's always a chance of a Turbob mini being hackable to add more roms.

After paying for the same games so many times over and over and owning physical copies of all of them, it's hard to justify paying for the artistic license of the same games again and again.

I never remember what these things go for, but $30 tops seems fair.

Technically, playing "pirated" roms on one of these when you own physical versions should be "legal". Plus music, film, game, musc industries are the worst for using the works of others without permission and even Nintendo put a SMB rom that a fan made in the last Nintendo box.

We've just become accustomed to being gouged by game companies, particularly with restricted non-physical games.

... why bother when much cheaper emulation options are available?

Are they really cheaper?  A pc is only cheaper if you already own one, but they're usually not something you have (or want) in the living room. A pi wouldn't be much cheaper, not by the time you bought it, a power supply, a nice case, an sd card, and a pair of controllers.  A used Wii or Xbox would be cheaper, but not by much if you want a pair of proper "classic" controllers.

Also, cost isn't the only factor.  Any of those options could save some money, but none of 'em will work right out of the box or be as user friendly.

I'm just saying that almost everyone has a computer. The same could be said that anyone who is into video games most likely already owns an xbox or nintendo wii. Thus making it the cheaper option. Not to mention being able to emulate multiple game systems on them instead of just one. Heck, even the sega dreamcast will emulate your NES mini games with no modding whatsoever.

I suppose if one really needs the feel of the original controllers then the mini route would be a better option. Although most people who are anal enough to require the original controllers would just get themselves the real system to begin with anyways.

I've seen many youtube videos of game collectors getting excited about the snes mini and I always think to myself why. Especially when you can basically see all the original games that come installed on the mini on their own shelf in the background of their video.

Yes, I do agree that the mainstream casual gaming market for these makes sense because the type of people who would end up buying one most likely don't own the original system in the first place.

Now to be fair, the Wii is pretty user-friendly and extremely easy to hack... I'm kind of a moron when it comes to technology (well, not really, I'm just very impatient and don't like reading instructions) but I've been able to hack mine all on my own more than once! It's as simple as putting the right files in the right folders on your SD card on your PC, then taking the SD card and putting it on your Wii, and then opening the SD Card Menu, press A a bunch of times and you're done!
I think even mom would be able to do it if given the instructions...

After that it's all a matter of getting the emulators and ROMs/ISOs you want, and even that is easy! If you got Homebrew Browser you can download the emulators directly from your Wii (if your Wii is connected to the Internet) and even a few Homebrew games like a port of Doom for example, as for getting the Roms, I don't know if you can do it on the Wii itself, I think not, but again, it's as easy as putting your SD card or external HDD back on your PC, putting the right files in the right folders, then putting it back on your Wii and you're done! The most complicated thing I've ever had to do on my Wii was loading the Sega CD and TurboGrafx CD bioses on GenPlusGX and WiiMednafen respectively, which btw was MUCH easier than doing it in their PC equivalents! (Not to mention they run pretty much flawlessly)

Granted, I know not every casual or kid will find a hacked Wii to be as user-friendly as a Plug & Play that looks like a little NES/SNES/TG-16, and I know for a fact that there's a LOT of people out there who are exponentially worse than me with technology, (and have way more money to spare) so obviously they are the market, not us who already have means to play a lot more NES/SNES/PCE games (be them legitimate or not)

Wii is the best way to go for emulation with a physical console experience, both for crt and hdtvs.
