Title: My Awesome Supergun
Post by: Keranu on November 25, 2006, 08:13:26 PM
I received my supergun in the mail today, which was wired by Michael Helgeson on these forums and the joystick crafting by me and my older brother. If anyone is interested in having a supergun being built, I highly recommend Michael on these forums because he knows what he's doing and he won't rip you off like some other guys.

Pictures

My hand-crafted joystick box, two player support.

The Neo Geo MVS Model M1BBV 1-slot with KoF'98 cart in it. Harness and power cables are coming out of the back of the joystick box.

Awesomely crafted breakout box designed by Michael which holds the encoder as well as audio out (includes pre-wired audio cables and audio out ports).

The whole set.

The other guys will charge $225 for the absolute lowest fee and that's just for a very basic supergun connector with no extra (systems, games, joysticks/controllers, etc...); not even component outputs! The highest the other guys will charge is $400, which again is just the supergun only with no extras, but has higher features such as component output and CPS2/3 harness.

What about my deal you ask :) ? My supergun features just about everything the best supergun of the other guys includes + a Neo Geo MVS + two player joystick (20 buttons total) + plus four Neo Geo games for around $400 shipped. No catch either, everything works great. So when you see the other guys overcharging way too much for their "labor", consider a change ;) .

Thanks again Mike for being a great help!

Yep. Even though the CPS 6 button harnesses are only like $10 or so, the other guys seem to make it add much value to the price. ;)

Awesome setup! If I was living in your area, Keranu, I'd like to have a game of KOF with you as well! =P~

Is that a Wii I see?

I saw an N64 and Gamecube! :D

By the way, have you considered painting that wooden exterior? A few good Neo-Geo colours would suit it fine! That, or consider creating a Neo-Geo themed shell!

methinks D-Lite should stay as far away from here as possible. :-"

Ya, nice rig bud.  I was looking into this a while back.  If I had the dough (and space in my shrinking apt.), I'd ask Michael to hook me up too.

I've been on a hot winning streak lately, especially when I have Benimaru aboard ;) .

I thought about it, but not sure if I will do any painting to it because I kinda like having a wood look like that. I am considering make a "console box" to put the MVS in and I'll probably do some Neo Geo-themed stuff to that.

Thanks. My box does take up a ton of space, but I can only imagine how hard it would be to find room and move a cabinet around. :D

That is cool, though I don't really understand the whole arcade scene and where to get the games (all I would care about are the Sega games, mostly).  You might want to rearrange everything so it doesn't look like a fire hazard.  :)

Not a bad set up Ken looks basic but it works  8)

Still it wouldn't hurt to paint it red and add some, NeoGeo sticker lables or some thing.

Just a freindly advice nothing more.

What you guys are not seeing is how shiney and smooth it is. he put alot of work into smoothing and varneshing it,and his pics on here are not showing that aspect of it.
In person its actually a blast to look at,and like my friend Eric said,if it was his,hed leave it alone and do nothing, because it looks just great as it is in person. If it was mine,Id leave it alone.

Plus,Keranu only owns  a MVS right now,but Im thinking he plans to buy other game pcbs, and making the SG Neo themed would be cool, but thats something you really have to wait and think on untill you really know how you want it. That isnt a NeoGeo only SG. Its not a Deanbox. In other words it plays more then 4 button games.

Once you do it its hard to undo it. In a couple months he may decide he doesnt like it looking like that. Sometimes simple is best. Sometimes it just takes time, having it around long enough to just get comfortible with it being in your bedroom, making it blend, and not stand out too badly.

Whoa! Varnish? That changes everything! I guess you can leave it the way it is after all! :)

Hey Mike, plan on doing any engraving of your initials to your superguns in the future...you know...just to show who did all the hard work?

Joe makes a good point.  Too many cable hookups could risk a fire if they're not arranged properly.  Hope you got a good power bar and breaker to prevent a blown fuse.

Nah,I dont ever do that kinda stuf, tis a tad too vain for me,and keranu built it,I only did a tad reinforcing and the wireing and stuff. All the assbreaking woodwork was done by Keranu. He worked really hard on it.

Hahaha, I'll get around to making it look safer sometime :D . Then again, "Fire Hazard" is my middle name.

You need a bigger joystick.

So how does it work?  How do you know what buttons do what?  Can you assign buttons on the joystick thingy to do what you want it to in the game?

Agreed.

The top four buttons are the main buttons, so since the only games I have are Neo Geo, I only use those ones really. However one of the bottom buttons on player 2's side is a service button and brings you to the MVS menu. When I get games that use more than four buttons, like Street Fighter, it will use the bottom buttons too. The buttons on top are for coin and start.

I can't assign the buttons with software (unless maybe some game out there does that), so the only way to do that would be to solder the wires to different microswitches on the buttons. The buttons on top are for coin and start.

Shoulda paid more attention.  Talk about commitment to your entertainment, Keranu!

P.S. Who would win in a fight between Kyo Kusanagi and Goro Daimon? :D

Thanks, it was about a week's worth of work :) . I am happy with it and I think it paid off.

Well if we are talking about KoF'98, which I believe is the most balanced fighter to date, then it completely depends on who's controlling them :) . Kyo's chain punch attacks leave a very wide oppurtunity for Daimon to grab them and slam Kyo down. However with Kyo's speed and using smart manuevering, Kyo could do some major combo damage if he were to cross-up Daimon at the right moment.

Usually I use prebuilt arcade sticks for superguns, usually. The woodbased Pelican or Snes Firesticks, stuff along those lines, and for a few people from Jacksonville, and Little Rock,Ive done x-arcade superguns. Im not a fan of woodworking, just of wireing up.

I don't like woodworking that much either.  I used to take a class of it back in junior high and tried to make a spice rack and a napkin holder.  Needless to say, they looked like they were put in a spin cycle dryer for a week after I finished with them. :x

As for wiring, are you an electrician, Mike? :-s

By the way, how are the BBQ's down in Little Rock and Jacksonville? :D

I love the wood joystick base as it is Keranu, don't change a thing!

Be careful shopping for pcb's, it quickly becomes more addictive than collecting 'regular' video games.

You should be able to easily find POW for under $10. Thats what I'd recommend anyone to start with when buying jamma pcbs.

Its not that easy nabbing a arcade pcb of POW. It usually goes for 20-40 bucks on ebay but isnt super common, local vendors here charge more, because its a sure bet to make them money on a location. However, everynow and then, you can locate a vendor who will sell you the whole arcade cab complete of the game for around 100-150 bucks.

Also, that pcb was really long, kinda flimsy without all the feet in place, and because of being flimsy could get damaged easy. Awesome game however, def worth picking up if you can get a fully working board.

I found some eBay seller the other night selling a bunch of the cheaper PCBs like Rastan Saga. I'll have to buy some of those after Christmas season.
