I don't know why, but I felt compelled to play through SMT 1 again after all these years. I beat it before on the Playstation, but don't remember it too well, probably because I played it in Japanese with a walkthrough so I could stay on the neutral path. This time, I chose the English translation for the GBA, as I still carry a DS Lite everywhere I go, and I was curious about the extra story points. I admit, though, that I did save time by playing most of it in an emulator to speed up combat and exploration. Unfortunately, I ended up with the law ending, as I didn't use a walkthrough this time.
My first Megami Tensei experience was Persona on the Playstation. I had never heard of the series at the time, so concepts such as recruiting and fusing enemies were very fresh and welcome. I got the best ending, too!
Once I realized this was a whole series of games, I ended up playing Majin Tensei next. I was surprised that it was a tactical RPG, but I like those anyway! THEN, a few years later, I played the PSX SMT.
I did complete the first Devil Survivor and got a good ending, but the experience was marred by an unfair situation I ran into a good 3/4 the way through the game.
Generally speaking, I prefer the first person entries, which is why I've never played through the Persona sequels.
Strange Journey on the DS was good, but it is brought down by an unfair boss.
And now that I sat through SMT again, I have NO excuse but to go and beat Tengai Makyou! So stay tuned for a report on that in the near future!
