Title: Recording Genesis and Master System games with capture card
Post by: Keranu on December 14, 2006, 04:34:24 PM
I received a capture card for my birthday yesterday and loving it. I tried recording some Genesis footage tonight but the screen had a wavey look to it. I've tried it with a model 1 Genesis using AVs, as well as Master System (with the same AVs) and a CDX but all have the wavey picture, though CDX has a cleaner overall picture (none of those thick vertical lines you see on model 1 Genesis). Is there any way around this? My capture card doesn't support RF, but my brother's does and I'll mess with that later to ese if it eliminates the wave. And before you guys jump on me, NO I am not doing a component mod for any of my consoles :) .

Well first and foremost you can get rid of the vertical bars on the model 1 Genesis simply by adding a 32X.
Secondly, your capture card might not be able to properly handle 240p. It sees a non480i signal and doesn't know what to do with itself. Try capturing the two player mode from Sonic 2, which is 480i. How does it look?

Thanks for the info, I'll try out Sonic 2's split screen mode and post what happens. In the mean time, here is a video I made recording Shadow Blasters http://www.lazerdorks.org/~keranu/shadowblasters.mpg . You can really tell the waveyness in the level and character select screens since they have a lot of straight lines.

Ok I tried Sonic 2's vs mode and it still looks wavey.

That looks to me like a bad VCR tape. Not sure what could be causing this. Does it do this on Turbo games? How about FM Towns games? Have you tried capturing any Colecovision games?

I've tried a few PCE games the night I got it and they worked fine. I've also tried the Master System as I have mentioned, but haven't tried anything else yet. If I had an FM Towns, you know I'd totally have that hooked up already :D .

Is it all wavy when you try to capture porn?
I'm going to have to say it's just the way your capture card reacts to Genesis video for some reason. Try capturing it with a properly installed 32X, yo.

I can't get the video to play off the bat right now, but upload it to YouTube, make it a temporary private video and I'll see if I can come up with a verdict.

It looks like bad time base correction or something.

Have you tried recording with an RF switch? Does your card record cable TV?
Are you lining out the audio through the Genesis' stereo headphone jack or just straight through the A/V cable?
Turbo Duo's often lose picture quality on some TV's if both left and right sound cables aren't fully connected.

My capture card doesn't have RF, but I did test the RF on my brother's capture card and it didn't have the waviness (though it had bad picture, of course).

The audio is coming straight from the mono AV cable, though I was thinking about lining the audio through the headphone jack. I'll have to mess with that later and post results.

Have you tried a different cable? I demand that you do. And if you don't, I'll.... do nothing.

As mentioned in my first post, I have tried it out with a CDX, which uses a different cable, and still got the same results :( . Also as posted, I get the same problem when using the Master System hooked up with the mono AV cables of my model 1 Genesis. I'll try messing with some other hardware too, like DVD players, PC-FX, SNES, etc...

Dude, you can't expect me to read your posts and be informed before I reply. That's just completely ridiculous.
Have you tried the AV in on your brother's capture card? No, not RF, but AV in?

Unfortunately my brother's capture card only does S-video and RF, so if I use composite hook ups, it will look all messed up in S-Video mode.

Have you tried any games that are better than Shadow Blasters and Sonic 2? Your card might need a bit more "awesome" to work properly, and Shadow Blasters won't cut it. Try Tommy Lasorda Baseball.

Dude, Shadow Blasters is one of the most jawesome games ever made, along with Insector X and King's Bounty. I guess the problem is that no capture card is awesome/jawesome enough to play these incredible games.

I've figured out your problem!!!!! I can't believe nobody caught this before!!!
The Genesis is a high definition video game system like the Xbox360 or the PlayStation 3... perhaps even a bit more powerful than those two combined. It is much too powerful for your capture card, which is only wimpy standard definition. Don't try to capture the Genesis' amazing HD graphics with a non-HD graphics card.
(http://pixelcraze.film-tech.net/crap/genesishd.jpg) See that? "High Definition Graphics". They wouldn't have put that there if it weren't 100% true.

Holy crap, I didn't even think of that. The Genesis is in HD! Where can I find a capture card capable of accurately recording the Genesis' high definition graphics? Also, does this mean that the Master System has high definition graphics as well?

No, the Master System is only EDTV.

What's the brand and model of the capture card?
Also what software are you using?
More info would be helpful.

Capture card: KWORLD DVD Maker PCI Software: Ulead Video Studio 9's Movie Maker. I've also tried using this PVR program and got the same results.

How about giving a go with Virtualdub? It's freeware program for video editing and capturing. Might as well try it, who knows it might solve your problems too. http://www.virtualdub.org/

This doesn't happen when I capture in Final Cut Pro (I don't have a capture card, I use an external DV hardware codec converter which plugs into Mr. Firewire Port). On a scale of 1 to 3, how much does this information help your current situation?

It was higher definition than the NES and SMS, so it was true at the time.

Guys I got some groundbreaking news. I found a new program called the "ZD Soft Game Recorder". And let me tell ya, this blows FRAPS out of the water! In fact just think of it as a mix of FRAPS and Tech Smith's screen capture programs like Camtasia and SnagIt.
www.zdsoft.com (http://www.zdsoft.com/)
And a video I made of one of the results.
Ever since I found this program, I haven't used the built-in AVI record feature in emulators, and Keranu if the preview screen itself doesn't have waves and only does when you're done capturing, you can also probably cheat your capture card with this thing and successfully get a good Sega video
Best thing about it, you can also record in MPEG for this thing so that you possibly won't have to go and compress it.

ZD Soft Game Recorder seems too good to come true. I'll try it out sometime next week b/c after x-mas I'll be posting a ton of videos.
I've collect a lot of new games for the FM-Towns and PC-98 that I want to show them everyone.

Keranu, do you have a Turbo Duo or PCE system with the DIN/TG-16 controller port sized A/V plug?
If so, try recording from that with only video and then with only video + one sound channel to see if you get the same wavy effect.

Oh this ZD is for real alright dawg! My last batch of videos for the past couple of days have been Wonderswan/Wonderswan Color and Neo Geo Pocket Color, plus one MSX game.
