Considering how badass the PCE CD games were for music in their games, I'm surprised there haven't been a good discussion about this yet (that I know of, anyway).
I never was the type to listen to the game music outside playing the actual game itself, but I just recently popped in Lords of Thunder, and was reminded how good the music was in that game (somehow reminds me a bit of listening to some of Satriani's riffs). Ditto for Spriggan. So I'm gonna start making a playlist on my computer.
So... what are some games PCE games with kick-ass riffs like above?
-
I'd say Sapphire, Ys III, and maybe Gate of Thunder. There are a bunch of others, but I can't think of them at the moment.
-
Then you will probably enjoy anything by Satoshi Miyashita / T's Music (Winds of Thunder, Sapphire, Hyper Wars). I could recommend truckloads of great PCE CD soundtracks, but my list of personal favourites would be endless. I'm sure people here will suggest you dozens of good choices. As a rule of thumb, anything from Falcom (especially Ryo Yonemitsu's arranges) is usually excellent.

I've heard many times Ai Cho Aniki has some great music, though I've never played it.

Actually I listened to your podcast (#18) for the first time yesterday sunteam_paul, and that's what got this whole thing about listening to PCE music going for me - Must say you run an excellent show!
-
the very best thing of any PCE CD-games is, that you always get the superb OST with it for free. I appreciate that a lot :D

It doesn't get any better than the final boss music in Neutopia.
You can find some great solos in these games as well:
Dungeon Explorer
Sidearms HuCard(end credits)
Devil's Crush
One of the reasons there isn't so much talk about metal soundtracks is that a lot of people here think that it actually ruins games.

It's because of Ys, Lords of Thunder, Download 2, etc. That I got into progressive rock, namely, Joe Satriani, Vinnie Moore(who I think sounds most like Lords), & Dream Theater! I'm also starting to check out Dragon Force. Yngwei Malmsteen has some incredible stuff as well, as many of you know, one of the boss songs from Ys 4, is infact, a version of one of his songs, though I forget the name at the moment.

Sapphire is a must if you enjoy the Lords soundtrack. Macross 2036 also has some kick-ass numbers, and if you want to hear a good lead, check out Hellfire S's fifth-stage tune. There was also some nice guitar work in Shape Shifter.

Shape Shifter has an awesome soundtrack.
EDIT: Oh, also check out Rayxamber III for some awesome tunes.

Ys 1&2
Ys III
Monster Lair
Ninja Spirit
Exile

Nexzr
Shadow of the Beast
Legendary Axe
Kyukyoku Tiger
Tatsujin

Castlevania!

Yar there are many CD games I'd buy just as audio CDs, regardless of what the game is like.
-
as you mentioned it once referring to shadow of the beast on your city 6  your chosen track is the best on the whole cd

I just recall hearing Kyukyoku Tiger music on your city #18 and thinking, "Damn, that's a good tune! I know that game..." And of course, I still didn't know that game when you announced the title because I didn't know the Japanese title, so I looked it up and saw the pic and the US title (Twin Cobra) that's when I said, "Ahhh..." Took me straight back about 20 years. Thanks for the time trip!
