Title: Secret mystery game(s)
Post by: Black Tiger on January 15, 2007, 08:33:43 AM
I recently bought a copy of Kabukiden off of eBay. The reason I bought it was because the description said that it came with both discs. I contacted the seller to ask if it really had 2 CDs and if so, if he knew what they were.

He responded that it did in fact have 2 seperate discs, but I'd know better than him since he's not familiar with this type of thing and can't read japanese.

So after buying it, I was going to post here asking people what they thought the other disc was going to be. But I guess I was too busy at the time and completely forgot.  :P And it arrived today.

But before I reveal the contents of the double disc case, would anyone like to make a few guesses first?

My original guess was that it'd be the RPG sampler, or perhaps the Kabukiden demo or another Hyper Catalog disc... -something that either didn't have a case originally or wasn't a full game.

I once found a Hyper Catalog 4 in with an Emerald Dragon I bought online years ago and many years before that I bought two Emerald Dragon cases literally off the street which contained Dragon Slayer II, Tengai Makyou II, Ys III and a Chinese war sim.

But today I was surprised to find that the Kabukiden case came with Tengai Makyou II and Ys IV.  :P

Which makes that my 4th TMII disc I believe, but only my second Ys IV disc.

There weren't any manuals or anthing else inside, just the case with it's original inserts and the two CDs.

I was immediately shocked at how nice the case looked. I bought Kabukiden when it first came out, nearly a decade and a half ago and my case is severly worn.  :)

Very interesting. At least you'll be able to make a few bucks from selling Ys IV.

Heh - I guess it wasn't so obvious that one of the discs was Kabukiden.   Well, I guess I unintentionally got one guess correct.

A pretty good day, huh?  I'm assuming you didn't pay much for the auction either?  (I say that cause Kabukiden was one of those games where there were tons of copies floating around second-hand video game shops in Japan - I bought my copy for 500yen or something like that.)

That's awesome.  Still a decent deal even though you had both games already.  Once I bought a used KOF94 Neo Geo CD and it had Saturn Vampire Saviour in it.  It was a better deal overall. :)  Later on I found another used copy of KOF94.  I was slightly disappointed to see that the KOF94 CD was inside.

I got Kabukiden new/sealed off ebay a few years ago and I only got 1 disk. I'm sure they made it a double cd case to accomodate for a thicker manual, though I also got Monster Maker and that came in a 1 CD case but it was thicker than normal due to its thick manual :-k

Yeah, some of those games due have a thicker single disc case, I wish I could find those cases at Best Buy or something.  I like to use those for single cd games, that are in double cases, cuz I hate the double cases!

Are you crazy? I'm keeping them both!

I think I paid $5 for it. Which was worth just for the entertainment of PCE grab bag.  :P

Although most RPG'ish PC Engine games come in double disc cases, all PCE games are single disc. The only game to include an extra disc is Galaxy Fraulien Yuna, and the second disc is just a short video clip with a few 'bromides'.

Urusei Yatsura - "Stay With You" was sold with an extra audio disc included in the case. There's also another version sold without it. Trying to think if there are any others... :-k

Do you happen to know what the first console game to use multiple game CDs was?

Hmm... That's a good quiz...

Night Trap for the Sega CD?

I think that the LE Kabukiden might've had an audio CD as well. 3x3 Eyes came with a VHS tape...

I guess Kabuki Den is a good game to get as far as surprise inclusions go.  When I received mine a few years ago, it was accompanied by the Fighting Street disc.  Although I suppose the joke was on me, since Fighting Street is a disaster.

Apparently not if you're looking to play Kabukiden.  :P
