Are there any games for the Turbo Duo that are like "The Lords of Thunder" in terms of music and graphics and style? I just love the neo-classical heavy metal in the game. I think the game is a work of genius because of that.
-
If you like Lords' music, you should definitely check out Sapphire. You might also dig some of the guitar work in Super Darius 2.
-
Although I don't remember it having a metal soundtrack, Sylphia is a another fun quality fantasy themed game. Its probably the closest you'll come to LOT in graphics and style
If you're interested in another quality shooter, even if it has a very different artistic theme, Magical Chase is often compared to LOT.
-
I always found Magical Chase to be a little similar to Lords as well, despite the huge style difference.
-
Also, despite the huge style differences, JJ & Jeff is similar to Lords.
-
why go so far and don't pick up a gate of thunder straightly? oke, the theme is different (more a space shooter), but the BGM rox anything away! especially the 2nd last stage!!
-
IIRC, Sapphire's music is from the same band that did Lords of Thunder.
-
Does anybody know what the name of the band is that did the sdtrk for Lords?
TS
-
I know that "T's Music" did the music for both games. I don't know if they count as a "band" though. I always thought it was just one guy.

GoT and Sapphire (on the PCE) are as close as you'll get in terms of soundtracks.
I've never played Magical Chase. Cotton is awesome as hell and the music is very catchy and rocking.
There's not much else on the US Duo.
On the PCE, Sylphia is slow, vertical-scrolling, outrageously expensive and doesn't have a very metal soundtrack. I would strongly reccommend Super Raiden to anyone over Sylphia.
How are the soundtracks on Rayxanber 3, Spriggan 1 & 2, Macross 2036, and Nexzr?
-
From what I can gather, T's Music, is a whole bunch of different guys, but, not specifically a band.
-
Yeah, T's Music also did Super Monkey Ball 1&2.
As you can imagine, they sound almost exactly like Lords of Thunder. :^o
-
T's Music also did the soundtrack for Splash Lake and Riot Zone. I think Ozzie the Ostrich (from Splash Lake) shows up as a cameo in Lords Of Thunder because of this.

Really? Where? I own both games, and I've played all through Lords of Thunder up until partway through the final "land" and I never noticed Ozzie. Unless he appears in the second half of the final stage or the boss fight...
-
Taking the broad view, there are about a hundred games like LoT out there, but honestly though there is nothing like LoT. Its unique. Not only because of the fanatsy metal theme (which is rad) but because it has a nice easy difficulty level, decent level design, etc. Its pretty great.
If you want to try something cool though, you can play my LoT remix where I took all the T's music out, and replaced with "real" metal acts like the ones that obviously inspired the T's music originals. Think of it as an alternate way of enjoy a great game.

Well I already have Gates of Thunder. I got it with my Turbo Duo. Well obviously Hucard games don't have the music of The Lords of Thunder. After playing The Lords of Thunder, no soundtrack is good enough for me. Though, I think Blazing Lazers has awesome chip music. It's for the synth fan in me. Gates of Thunder, although it has an awesome rock soundtrack, it doesn't have the melodic neo-classical heavy metal of its different sequel. GoT is the shooter that I play if I want space ships and LoT is for my fantasy taste.

Actually, I was kidding in a stevek666 sort of way. :D
-
You can see Ozzie in the shop of Space Fantasy Zone, however.
-
well nobody mentioned it but Syd Meads Terraforming is some where in the same ballpark. And it got a US release.
Gameplay and music probably have more in common with Gates, but I thought It should make honorable mentioning.
-
I've heard Terraforming sucked, which is why I've always avoided trying to find a copy.
The screenshots of it I've seen look beautiful, however. The gameplay must be horrific, I suppose.
-
Yeah, the gameplay in Terraforming feels a little loose and random, but the enemy design is pretty unique, and the music is just great. Hey, if you can get it for cheap I'd recommend it.
-
The intro effects alone are worth a few bucks. how many other games besides the Gates 3 In 1 had cool morphing/zooming effects with the System Card Intro "Press Run Button" Screen?
Otherwise it has really good music and some killer graphics.
Agreed- if found at a good deal- I recommend. Somewhere around $20 is not too bad. I bought it in '94 for 49.99 from TZD lolz!

Paranoia Dragon mentioned that Hyper Wars sounds like Lords and Sapphire in this thread-
http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=2751.0
You can download the soundtrack from there too.
After listening to it, it not only sounds just like Lords, Sapphire and Ys III, but entire riffs are pretty much identical to parts of those other games' soundtracks.
After looking up this Yasutaka Hatade character, it looks like he was involved in soundtracks for games by all kinds of publishers. So maybe he had a hand in some of the similar sounding soundtracks.
-
I downloaded the soundtrack and thought that it was awesome. Is Hyper Wars a shooter game like the others. The style is more in tone with Gates of Thunder. It's actually sounds like a fusion of Gates and Lords of Thunder music styles.
-
Is Hyper Wars a shooter game like the others.
completely wrong there, it's a simulation
-
but what the hell  i own that game since i can't remember how long, and never gave any attention to it, since it absolutely isn't my taste of game. also never went into the BGM until now. absolutely roxin'!! thx a lot PD :D
-
No problem! I was totally surprised, as I knew it wasn't a shooter, or even action. I knew it was some kind of sim game, & when I recieved it in the mail with a bundle of games, on the way home from work, I proceeded to the games in my cd player in my truck, & was obviously struck by the music in it! Not only that, but, it's also got some decent bass, those tracks were bumpin' in my truck!
-
So it is a strategy game. The music sounded like one for a shooter.
