Title: Games I just got!
Post by: Shooto Gamer on April 02, 2007, 05:32:21 AM
JIGOKUMEGURI AKA: BONZE ADVENTURE: What a fun platform game! For some reason I love taito games. And on that note, I picked up..

KYUKYOKU TIGER - AKA: TIGER HELI: Loved playing this in the arcade. The Pcengine port is fantastic. Am also trying to find a good deal on the sequel for the saturn lol.

NINJA WARRIORS: Okay, so it's missing a lot of details from the arcade, but I still enjoy it :)

SHINOBI: Same deal here. Not quite like the arcade and missing a lot of levels, bonus stages and close quarter moves. I still like it though.

I think both games just have that nostalgic factor. I used to play both games all the times in the arcades and always wanted to own them myself.

These ones were cheap, but I enjoy them:

DRAGON SPIRIT: Good port of the arcade game. I have it on the Namco compilation, but it was really cheap so I grabbed it anyway.

PAC-LAND: It certainly is different from other pacman games! But it turned out to be a fun little game.

Next on my list are:

BLOODY WOLF, MR. HELI, DEVIL CRASH, ALIEN CRUSH (First want the superior sequel before buying though), PC DENJIN - PUNKIC CYBORGS AKA: AIR ZONK, CORYOON: CHILD OF DRAGON, DON DOKO DON, TWIN BEE, PARODIUS, SALAMANDER, GRADIUS (Anything from Konami), NINJA SPIRIT.

Also, does anyone think that the WONDERBOY games are worth getting for pcengine? How about ATOMIC ROBO KID SPECIAL?

The Wonder Boy series is one the best series ever, get them all.  Atomic Robo Kid kinda sucks, but its ok if you can get it REALLY cheap.

Definitely check out any Wonderboy games, they're all pretty decent. I've always had a liking to the Atomic Robo Kid games. It has unique gameplay and is pretty fun.

Coryoon can be kinda expensive, and it's on my list too.

The Wonder Boy games are okay, but features some of the worst level designs you'll ever see (unless you love empty corridors). Nice that you got Dragon Spirit - awesome shooter with some of the best music I've heard in a game.

why in gods sake, everyone praises dragon spirit always that much? for me that's just one of those boring shooter with a sloppy gameplay.
the sprite and its hitarea is far to big and the backgrounds are boring due to less details and repeating elements. the BGM is some of OK.

it's not a really bad game but profoundly overhyped IMO.

I agree with Tatsujin.  It's beyond me why Dragon Spirit receives so much praise when there are so many superior shooters available for the Duo.  I thought it was slow and ugly, and only one tune from its "amazing" soundtrack really made an impression on me (I believe it was stage 6).

lol

I do agree that Dragon Spirit is not the best shooter on the system. However, I bought it complete for 250 yen! That is a little over 2 bucks American :)

As far as Atomic Robo Kid, I can get it cheap. So I will be picking it up also. Wonderboys are also on my list now too :)

The sad part is that I saw a copy of Coryoon for a good price and didn't buy it at the time :( Hopefully when I go back, It will still be there.

i'm aware that dragon spirit is a very common and cheap game. sometime i've seen it for even less than 100yen. but that's not the point. since long long ago the game is always praised to heaven which i never could understand.

I understand. I was not aware that people praised the game that much. I do enjoy the game, but there are way better titles of the same genre on pcengine for sure.

I don't like Dragon Spirit too much (I used to think it was really cool when I first played it). As Runin said, it's slow and ugly and I'd much rather play something like Blazing Lazers. However I did think the multi head feature was really badass and the music was amazing (after the first stage, anyways). I found Dragon Saber to be a lot more fun, I think it's mostly because it's two players. The music wasn't quite as good, but still decent.

On KYUKYOKU TIGER, I'm pretty sure, that game is not Tiger Heli, but infact, the sequal to Tiger Heli, aka Twin Cobra in the US.  I've gone back n forth, making sure, playing the various versions & doing research, & everything points to it being the sequal to Tiger Heli.  I have the NES version of Tiger Heli, & it's a totally different game, it's similar, & made by the same people, but, the music is different, the weapons are different, etc.  Here's a wiki on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyukyoku_Tiger

Shooters are supposed to be slow! :P Dragon Spirit is the perfect example of a true classic shooter. Just the kind I like, along with Twin Bee.

Good to know.  I have Kyukyoku Tiger on a pirate 4-in-1 hucard (with Super Volleyball, Hot-Blood High School Dodgeball and King of Casino).  I always figured it was just a version of Tiger Heli.  Pretty good game either way.  Is the PCE version 2-player?

Very interesting. I always thought it was the same Tiger Heli I played in the arcades. It's been a while so I guess not :) So I guess the Saturn version is the third one in the series? BTW: How is the NES version of Tiger Heli? Is it worth tracking down? Thanks for the info!

"kyuukyoku tiger = tiger heli" is an old story which was created by almost every game-mag around the world back in time, due to wrong translation or what ever.

fact is, tiger heli = tiger heli, kyuukyoku tiger = utlimate tiger, which is the official sequel of tiger heli by taito.

So one of my house mates that I live with in Japan comes home and sees me playing my pcengine. He then tells me that he still has some games lying around at his parents house and he will just give them to me!
So he arrives home at night and pulls out the following games:

Vigilante, Power Drift, Batman, F1 Dream, F1 Triple Battle, Son Son 2, Bomber Man 94, Out Live, Double Dungeons, Kato Chan & Ken Chan , Gaia No Monsho, P-47 , Formation Armed F

Oh and an extra control pad also :)

Vigilante: Is a fun little beat em up. I have this one for my U.S Turbo. So nothing different here. This was one of those games that I actually finished in the arcades when I was 10 years old. I still like having a go at it. Love getting the nunchuks!

Power Drift: I always thought this was a cool game. The Pcengine version is structured a little different then the arcade. You can't choose the track you want to race on etc. Overall, it does attempt to replicate the arcade with it's effects, but it's all a bit rough. I really wasn't expecting more then this actually and am quite happy to have it in my collection now.

Batman: This game is great. It has great music to start and while it doesn't really play like any Batman game out there, I find this game quite fun to play. You just go around collecting things avoiding baddies and then it's on to the next level. There are tons of levels in this game too.

F1 Dream and F1 Triple Battle: These are very average racers. F1 Dream is a top view racer that I could not really get into. F1 Triple Battle is your traditional F1 racer. I found the controls kind of stiff in this one. I can't see myself going back to either honestly.

Son Son 2 : Kick ass game. Action Platform that's very similar to Black Tiger. Lot's of thing to collect etc. I like this game a lot. Looks great also.

Bomber Man 94 : Amazing game. Never gets old!

Out Live, Gaia No Monsho, Double Dungeons: My Japanese isn't good enough yet to fully enjoy these :(

P-47: Very average sideways shooter. I tend to like these games no matter what though :) The second level has some neat Parallax scrolling.

Formation Armed F: Tough vertical shooter, but I really enjoy it. Again, not the best on the pcengine. Like I said, I tend to like these game a lot. Looks and sounds decent as well.

Double Dungeons is a very simple dungeon crawler, but it can be a lot of fun with two players.  I think some of that fun will be lost, though, if you can't understand the goofy in-game interjections and stage epilogues.

Totally agreed. Hell I even think it's a little fun on single player, but playing with another person is the best. When you finally meet up with your other character, it's like one of the greatest moments in video game history. It also has some pretty sweet music and plenty of cheesy medieval enemies.

Yeah, Double dungeons was fun for the very little that I understood. I hope to work a little more on my Japanese so I can really get into some of these games more. Especially RPG type games that were not released in North America. However, in my line of work, I don't really need to know that much Japanese. I am trying to study on my own when I get the chance though. I may head over to Akihabara next weekend to grab some of the other games on my wanted list :)

My friend found another game in his house:

New Zealand Story: I like this game. I have it on the Taito collection. So I was interested to see how the pcengine game compared. I must say, it feels like there is something missing for sure. Some of the extra hidden items are missing I believe. Also, the colours don't look right. The pcengine can display a great amount of colours and I feel that it could have done better. It's not a bad game and I will still play it, but I am happy I didn't pay for it because I would have been slightly disappointed. However, I must keep in mind that the game was released in 1990. I would have been quite impressed with this port if I had seen it then :)
