So! Vote away. And no, I don't want to put this in the PC Engine section, but if you do, move it.
Duo models don't count since they're the same thing in a different case.
*By voting for this, you think Hucards are best overall (Turbo Grafx is included in this)
**By voting for this, you think CDs are best overall (Turbo CD is included in this)
***Then why are you here? :)
-
No contest - Ys, GoT, LoT, and Dracula X for the win.
-
what have i spawned?
-
I probably wouldn't even have bought the PCE/TG16 if it weren't for the CD add-on.
-
sorry, can't do that vote, since no combo is available
-
Is the PC-FX even a system? I thought it just played its own proprietary anime VCDs. I hate anime, so I therefore hate the PC-FX.
-
I voted Super Grafx for it's incredibly small library of games.
-
You would! If only NEC had a system that had only 1 game....
-
Your wish is granted..... well, sort of. You're forgetting about the paint store kiosk thingy that was built off of a TG-16 and ran its very own super special software. 8)
-
If we're going by released software, then I can't see how anyone but Keranu could vote for anything other than PCE CD.
As for 'technological medium' or whatever, I'd still vote for PCE CD since it can still do everything a HuCard can do (graphics & PSG) and its still based off of my favorite real actual console.
Shouldn't the Dreamcast and Gamecube also make the list, since the PC Engine systems are Hudson's and NEC only supplied the parts?
Either that, or have the voting between only 'PC-FX' and 'NEC never made a good console'. I'd like to see who'd win in that contest. :P
-
PC-FX for the win...
-
CD/SCD/ACD all the way.
The sad thing about it sega could have learn a thing or two from NEC
-
Voted SuperGrafx... Mostly because it's backwards compatible plus has its own exclusives. :P
-
Backwards compatibility must be excluded when voting! We're ONLY talking about the exlusive games here!
-
WTF is the Turbo BWC with?
-
Super Grafx is backwards compatible with standard hu cards.
-
Oh, I thought you meant the standard Turbo was backwards compatible...
-
I'm the one who voted for PC Engine Hucards only. Its not that i dont like the CD/SCD/ACD games, because I love them. I just dont like CD/DVD based media for games. You can ruin a CD easily. Hucards and cartridges in general tend to take either a ton of abuse, or about a billion plays before they break. Of course your supposed to take care of your games, but accidents happen. It sucks when you ruin something thats not easily replaced.
-
I voted SuperGrafx. It was definitely a machine that needed to be pushed. Their best effort, I think...the PC-FX is just too much of a hodgepodge system to take seriously.
-
SuperGrafx.
-
WHY is everybody voting Supergrafx? I just can't understand this! It's got like four games, and they aren't even good. Shocking.
-
Um, perhaps you're really looking for best format??
Best System is the SuperGrafx because it plays every Hucard ever. Does anyone know of any existing Power Consoles???
Best media format is the PCE-CD and it's five iterations v1.0,v2.0,v2.1,v3.0, Arcade X.
-
I <3 the Japanese style games of PC-FX, and the fact that it plays CD-R makes it the BEST CONSOLE EVER.
Hpmebrew will hopefully give us more SHMUPS.
-
Lots of old CD systems play CDRs; Sega CD, 3DO, hell even Turbo CDs (not duos) have no problem with CDRs.

That's a subject of debate  . Some people's Duos, like mine, can play CD-Rs really well for the most part, while my PCE CD has a much harder time loading them and sometimes can't even boot them. But yeah GUTS is right, old CD systems didn't have all that gay piracy protection crap and can run CD-Rs just fine for the most part. Though with the Saturn and Playstation not being able to play backups without the necessary modding, I could see how someone would think the PC-FX might have problems too.

Just to piss you off, my friend ;) . Actually that's a good question, as I only voted for it as a joke. I think most people are voting for it because they think it counts for both PCE and SGX games instead of just the SGX games themself.
-

Yup, at least one exists. Magazines from back in the day show what looked to be a working prototype. Actually, one was up on yahoo auctions Japan a long time ago... probably back around '99 - 2000. It was before yahoo started charging people to buy/sell. The only reason I remember this is because I won a somewhat expensive item on the same day that somebody posted a Power Console auction. I didn't have anywhere near the $$$ to pay for both auctions. Oh well. I doubt I would've won the auction anyway.

Its been my experience that Duo's start having trouble playing cdr's once the laser begins to wear out/die.
Maybe the PC-FX seems better at playing cdr's since most units haven't received nearly as much play time as the average Duo.
As for the SuperGrafx category, it should get a ***** disclaimer that says "by voting for this, you're excluding all PCE HuCards" since voting for the CD format does. Otherwise, whats the point of having both PCE Hu's and SGX as candidates?

maybe you think all 6 SGX games suck?
-
The poll says "best console".
That includes all inherent qualities of said console, including ability to play "normal" PCE HuCards, in the case of the SuperGrafx.
Bite me.

No, the poll says a lot more than that. If you were to include all the inherent qualities of a PCE CD playing console(without disclaimers), then it would also play all PCE HuCards.

They don't all suck, but they still don't even compare to the entire PCE CD library.
-
I forgot to put in a disclaimer for the SGX, because I thought it would be obvious. Guess it weren't.
By voting for the SGX, you prefer the SGX (meaning the SGX hardware and library of games -only-) to the entire hu-card or pce-cd library, as backwards compatibility is not included in this poll.
-
Yeah, there's a bunch a holes in the way you formatted your poll. Since we can't vote for a DUO, the CD systems require a PCE/Core/LT/SG to operate the CD unit. So, according to this poll at face value, the CD system is just a giant paper weight since a CD console is worthless without a HuCard player attached to it for insertion of a systems card.
Since the Power Console does exist, and as much as I love my new Cordless PCE Pads, I'd take the Power Console over the other 350+ Hucards that work on a PCE.
If we're being super anal, we can't really count the Metro-Sexual Bi-compatability Darius game since it can be played on two platforms.
Oh and if the LT is lumped in the HuCard system, then it's a toss up between Super Nova pocked LT screen and a power console with only 5 games to play. (Although I could play a couple of the SG games for years). And the LT REALLY loses it's charm if I can't hook it up to a CD-Rom or Super-CD unit.
Now if I can region mod my hypothetical LT (if it's included in the HuCards) then I'd take the region modded LT over a Power Console equipped SG.
Backwards compatiblity clouds the CD issue too...
Should I keep going or should I stop...
-
I actually meant game libraries rather than the actual consoles. I mean, who cares about the console anyway? It's all about the games.
-
No doubt the CD library has the best titles.
Can I change my vote?

But there weren't any disclaimers on the SuperGrafx. So it does include all that.

Again, the title is "NEC's Best Console".
You should have called it "NEC's Best Game Library" if that were your intent. The two are vastly different. While I agree it's the games that ultimately make a console what it is, on a technical level that is not the case, and this poll was titled "NEC's Best Console".
So I stand by my vote: SuperGrafx was their best console, on a technical level (IMHO). You got superior 16-bit graphics hardware and a backwards compatibility with an established software (and hardware, no less!) base. Granted their execution and effort in marketing and development was poor, but that's beside the point in this instance.
For best game library, I would have voted for the CD library.
But this is all moot, really-- offsidewing made an excellent point. There were too many holes in the poll and certain points were (apparently) left open to individual interpretation.

Turbo Chips FTMFW!!!!!

You honestly think that the SuperGrafx is technically superior to the PC-FX?

I do...the PC-FX is a complete MESS. At least the SuperGrafx is straightforward in both design and interface...the PC-FX is neither. Sure, it has a lot more meat in there, but someone didn't arrange the plate correctly!

<sigh>
No. That's not what I'm saying.
I'm saying, that in my opinion, the SuperGrafx was their best console.
That in as much as the SuperGrafx was a better contemporary to other "16-bit" graphics consoles than the PC-FX was to it's "32-bit" brethren.
I suppose my use of the word "technical" was misleading-- it was meant as an indicator of me judging it by the console's abilities and other inherent qualities as opposed to solely judging by it's available game library or it's market success. I voted SuperGrafx because of it's backwards compatibility with all PCE games and hardware peripherals, plus you get the added bonus of the mega-awesome SGX game titles. For me, the PC-FX loses because it's not nearly as cool and it doesn't provide compatibility with anything established in the previous "generation". The whole package seems just a tad lackluster for a "32-bit" system.
Look, this poll was screwed up from the beginning. The creator's intent was obviously to poll our preference in game libraries by medium (PCE CD, PCE HuCard, SuperGrafx HuCard, PC-FX CD). But because of the way the poll is presented, particularly the fact that it's called "NEC's Best Mother-f*ckin' Console" and not "NEC's Best Ass-Kicking Game Library" this meaning was lost on some. Add to that the ultra-confusing choice of options to vote for.....
SuperGrafx was NEC's best console.
Create a new poll called "NEC's Best Game Library" and I'll vote differently.
