So! Which one do you think is the best game in the Zelda series? The CD-i games are obviously excluded, as they aren't actually games.
Personally... I say Ocarina of Time. I'd like to say Twilight Princess, but I can't, as I recently replayed Ocarina of Time and enjoyed it immensely... just like every time I've played through it (5-10 times). While Twilight Princess is the best game I have played since Ocarina of Time itself, it's just not as good. Majora's Mask deserves mention as well, as that game is simply incredible. Too bad it has no replay value for me for some reason. Can't seem to enjoy it again. Additionally, I consider Zelda 3 the best 2d Zelda, but I couldn't possibly vote for that, as I don't like the 2d Zelda games anywhere near as much as the 3d ones.
-
Ocarina, no contest. The only other ones I even remotely like are the first two.
-
Link's Awakening. It's a refreshing change from the rest of the games in terms of both storyline and gameplay, and it made very good use of the hardware it was programmed on. The earlier games are good of course, but most of the later games just seemed kinda blah. I've yet to play the newest two though, but it sounds like more of the same that I didn't like in the post-Awakening games...too much grinding and too many distractions.
-
I voted the original, you can't beat the original.
-
Zelda II is the clear winner here.
-
It's really hard to choose between LttP and OOT, so I won't.
You forgot the CD-I games, btw.
-
The magic wore off after the original.
-
You need to add the "There has never been a good Zelda game" option
-
The original, no problem. :)
-
A Link to the Past is the only Zelda game that I can tolerate. Ocarina of Time made me vomit with its shitty graphics, the original seems way too basic as if it were programmed in a week, the 2nd game looks repetitive as hell, nobody cares about Gameboy games and the other 3D incarnations are too boring and MUST be powered off within 30 seconds to avoid slipping into a coma.

Damn straight. I finalize my vote to LttP.

I intentionally excluded it since that statement is simply untrue.

No I didn't. There are no CD-i games.
There's CD-i crap, though.

LttP 8-[

zelda III
Zelda I
zelda GB (awakening)
Zelda II
never been into 3D zeldas really, since they couldn't taste me enough.

I find it very difficult to consider Zelda II to even be a Zelda game. Not to say that the game isn't great...it's one of my faves, and the game I used the most while testing my own NES emulator, but it's just so vastly different from the rest; it's as if someone took a platformer and said "hey, let's stick Link in here instead of this dopey guy we already got"...sorta like the US release of SMB2.

We all know that for the next game in the series, LttP, they went back to the original for inspiration, but what if they had continued to refine the Zelda 2 style game, with more jumping, and RPG-esque stats?
It could have been a better series IMO.
-
I voted for Wind Waker. My second place vote would be Link's Awakening.
-
Zelda TP that's a refine zelda as you can get.
-
Oh and what about the Satellaview Zeldas?
-
Many of the later games are damn good, but it's hard to surpass the goodness of the original.

Yeah, but, SMB2 I think deserves a true sequal! Actually, it might be kinda cool, if they ever did a sequal to Zelda 2 on DS!
-
Oh and what about the Satellaview Zeldas?
Unfinished, unreleased and nobody's played them. And no, testing the shit dumps on an emulator does not count. They weren't meant to be played that way.
As for Zelda II... I actually read in a magazine that it was originally meant to be some typical Famicom action RPG, but in mid-development they decided to slap the Zelda name on it just because the first game was so successful. A little plan to use a popular name to make it sell better. They failed. In Japan. It was very successful in Europe though.
By the way, for those who voted for the first game: what made you choose it? Do you actually consider it a good game? Why? Is it just nostalgia? It can be fun as a "pick up and play" game, but it's not exactly "good". It hasn't aged well.

Are you on X or Special K? Seriously. ¬_¬

Some people DO play Japanese games, you know.
-
As I said: shit dumps. They weren't meant to be played that way. They are improperly emulated, and data is missing. Nobody here's played the real thing.

They're still Zelda games, as are the CD-I games and thus should be included. You can't make a poll and only include things YOU like, you have to have EVERYTHING in that certain catergory, Orwellian polls SUCK.
-
NOBODY likes the CD-i games, that's why I excluded them. Had I included them, people would've voted for them just to "give them some love" (I'm looking at Keranu here). :P I'm only including real, officially released games by Nintendo. No unreleased BS-X crap, and no Philips shit.
-

I agree that it hasn't aged well.
It's a game that worked well for its time. In an internet walkthough-less day and age, where you actually had to go look for levels and power-ups the legit way (or use information gathered from magazines, friends, etc), made it a good video game experience for its time. The other Zeldas came up short in that department.
So I guess you can call that nostalgia. Which is fine with me.
-
I demand the CD-i games be on this list whether people like it or not. In the mean time, I voted Zelda II.
-
Out of them all, I had the best experience playing Link to the Past.
-

I do consider the original to be a good game, but I don't consider any of the Zelda games to be all that and a bag of chips. I haven't played Zelda in a loooong time, but I think if I were to pick it up today that I'd enjoy it enough to want to finish it.
Screw those BS games. No Link? Just some nameless ass clowns? f*ck that shit - BS doesn't just stand for Broadcast Satellaview. There is no reason to add this crap (or the CD-i junk) to the poll. Who in there right mind would vote for them anyway?
-
I would vote for the Satellaview versions, had we been allowed.
Quick Zelda question here: We all know that in the Japanese version of the first game, there were enemies (I think it's those little lake things that shoot you) that could be killed by a loud noise picked up from the Famicom controller's microphone.
We also know that the NES did not include the microphone. So my question is, can you plug in a Famicom controller and kill these enemies, or was the microphone code removed from the game?
-
No it's the Pols Voice. Those little rabbit heads in the later dungeons. You cannot plug in a Famicom controller into the NES. Also, you can kill those enemies with the flute instead in the not-Japanese version.
-
So the code must have been removed from the game, and even if it wasn't, there'd be no way to find out short of a tedious reverse engineering session, or rigging the US Zelda to work on the Famicom.
Thanks for the answer! :)
-
Ocarina of Time: Master Quest.
I played the Zeldas sparingly as each reincarnation was launched on the major console platforms. Anything that came out on the SNES I never played because I was addicted to the Turbo like Black Tar heroin, or cocaine as my original "how did you join" post would state.
I thought Windbreaker, er, Windwaker on the Gamepube was fantastic, but that's what led the playing of OOT:MQ.

Reading your posts, it occurs to me that you do not know that the original Famicom (the one with the microphone in the controller) had the controllers hardwired into the system. You can't unplug them. It's possible you could remove the connector inside, but it's likely very different from the one in the NES.
The easiest way to try it would be to get a NES>Famicom adaptor.

That always struck me as a really dumbf*ck design move.
What if one of your controllers stopped working (hey, it happens)? What a freakin' pain in the ass it would be to do anything about it. You'd have to send your whole system away and have it repaired.
-
Don't forget the super short cords! :P Also, no select button on controller #2. Fantastic.
-
Alot of games that are virtually unplayable by some are enjoyed by others.
I find that I enjoy some bad games because of the experience I have while playing them. You guys know what I mean.
I would personally vote all of the CD-i games ahead of Zelda II. I hated Zelda II, all my friends hated Zelda II, and we just picked on it till no end!
Oh yea- the poll- My fav is Link to the Past. Absolutely loved this game! One of my all time favorites!
-
Have you played the CD-i games? No sane person would find actual enjoyment playing them, not even by just saying "this game sucks!" or actually prefer them over great games like Twilight Princess. Again, they aren't games - there's hardly any actual gameplay in them. Easily the worst "games" ever produced. Absolutely no doubt at ALL about it.

So you have played them?
How do they play? One looked like Zelda one with digitized graphics(from photos of a sandbox), but the endings of each look like Ys III.
-
Yes, I've played them, and nearly lost a nut laughing at the intro sequences. Somehow the gameplay ALMOST reminds me a bit of Shapeshifter or Beyond Shadowgate.
I also enjoy games like Sewer Shark and Wirehead. Matter of fact Wirehead is the greatest video game ever created!!

So they're both side scrollers all the way through then?
-
So you have played them?
Yeah I have. It was depressing. One could imagine that the side scrolling ones would be somewhat like Zelda 2, but they aren't. The problem is that the CD-i wasn't designed with games in mind (I honestly don't know WHAT it was designed for). The games are worse than these lame games made for dvd-players, the system cannot handle sprites properly, collision detection is so bad it cannot be described with words and the controls are so weird and unresponsive it's practically impossible to get past the first enemy (or even the title screen). These games are way too overhyped, the fact that people actually consider thinking about maybe trying them is pure madness. Again: these games ARE the worst ever made. I can easily say that without having played every game ever made. These games aren't games.
They were actually selling these things? That's far worse than murder!
Two of them are side scrollers (Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil). The third game (Zelda's Adventure) is an overhead game and is even worse than the first two.
-
Even without playing them (yet), I can still say the CD-i Zelda games are the best.
-

i remember back in time, when one of our local electric-stores had a cd-i with one of those zeldas in the window. we were watching the intro/demoplay from the outside over and over, and each time our stomach became more painful from laughing at. i'm still sure, if the shop owner didn't scare as away after a while, we'd certainly died just like the rats in roger rabbit did. unforgettable!

I played a golf game on the CD-i at Sears once.
