Title: Which Game Should I play next.
Post by: offsidewing on May 18, 2007, 03:42:41 AM
Ok, so I've just beaten Cosmic Fantasy 2.  The first beloved TG game I've played in 8-ish years.  As I eyeball my collection, I wonder what to play next.  I'm leaving the Ys Games off the list for now because those are a little less time consuming (and can play them in moderation).

I've never played a Japanese RPG (except for Ys4) so I'm thinking about playing one of those next, but I'm drawn to Vasteel which I've never really sunken my teeth into.  Assume any game I've listed as "played" hasn't been played in at least 8 years.

Gulliver Boy.

Or Monbit. Never played it, but it looks nice.

Kabuki Den (the third FEoE) is the best game on that list.

Kabuki Den (the third FEoE) is the best game on that list.

Do I owe it to myself to play the three FEoE's in succession?

I recommend playing them in reverse order.

Kabuki Den gets off to the fastest start, it's very colorful and immediately wacky and entertaining, it's got the best group of characters and the most memorable moments, and it's the flat-out best of the three.

Then play Manji Maru.  Its menus are basically the same as Kabuki Den's, so you'll feel right at home.  It's an outstanding epic.

Then play Ziria.  It gets off to a slow start and it's quite primitive compared to the other two, so if you haven't already played them, you might be less willing to sit through the dull early parts.  But it gets great before too long.

Vasteel. It can get a bit monotonous after awhile though, so you kinda gotta play it in increments. It's pretty long, and the constant battling can really drain ya.

Gulliver Boy wouldn't be the best choice to break you into J-RPGs.  Though it's not a complex, heavy-duty RPG, it's not too linear, so you can easily get lost in the game without a good understanding of the language.

And as far as I know, there isn't a good English faq written up for this game as of yet, though there are few excellent Japanese ones that you may be able to babelfish.  I wrote about the game a few months ago, and listed where you can find these faqs on the web.

My vote's for Neutopia.  It's short, easy, and delicious (just like my girlfriend), so it'll be simple to finish before you chomp into nice and meaty Kabuki Den.

Sell Vasteel, that game is horrible, then follow runin's advice.

I voted Neutopia since it doesn't take long to beat.

What?!?!?!?  Where's my bitch slappin stick when I need it?  Like nod said, Vasteel can be monotonous and is best in small doses, but it's worth keeping and playing.  Hell, it's worth keeping around just for the funky jazz tunes alone.

Vasteel's not a bad game but hey, if you're gonna sell it, sell it to me. :P

"Far East of Eden: the Third one" -its the best game on PC Engine.

If "monotonous" and "best in small doses" are the best things you can say about a game, then yeah it's crap.

Are there any cheat codes or debug codes for Vasteel?  I remember two things about the game from 1993.

1.  Big Gay AL does the audio descripton for all the bots in the game.

2.  The computer does nothing but crap out grunts.

I do remember the kick ass lido lounge jazz tracks.

Currently Neutopia is dominating the polls, +/- 4%.

Only if you're impatient. But most games in the strategy genre are like that so if you're not into hex strategies, don't bother playing one.

I like hex strategy games if they're good, like Dark Wizard or Iron Storm.  Besides, I was making the point that even people who _like_ vasteel say it's monotonous and best in small doses, that's not a very good endorsement!
Title: Re: Which Game Should I play next.

The problem with Vasteel is there's not enough to break up the pace of the game. Dark Wizard is another game that can get monotonous and is best in small doses, although it does have some downtime (towns, mainly). But strat games aren't really my forté so I'm not the best judge...I'm sure there are people who can sit down in front of Vasteel and play it through in a day.

Speaking of playing through a game in a day...I played through Ys I & II today in just over 7 hours...virtually non-stop.

offsidewing: if you decide to go with Neutopia and you need any pointers/tips/help, just ask me...the game's #1 on my list of faves and I know it inside and out.

Far East of Eden/Tengai Makyo: Fuun Kabuki Den.

I haven't played such a great RPG in I don't know how long. I'm at the halfway point and some of my previous efforts are on YouTube.

< For those who don't know, the guy in my avatar is Zeami, one of the game's characters.

Sweet.  If my June/July 1990 issue of Turboplay lets me down, I'll drop you a line.  The mag has a Neutopia strategy guide.

Man I remember VG&CE's walkthrough of neutopia II spread out over a few issues, that was awesome.  One of these days I'm going to pony up and buy a complete run of VG&CE, that was the best magazine of all time.

Personally, I'd go with Vasteel, because it rocks, but if you're not feeling it (i.e., not in the mood for it), then go for Neutopia: it's nice and simple and you'll appreciate it a lot more if you finish it before moving on to bigger and grander games like Tengai Makyo / Kabuki Den.

Do not listen to GUTS, he just doesn't like Vasteel. :)

If you do play Vasteel, you can choose to have PSG or Red Book sountrack, plus you should choose manual controls for the action sequences.

I think Vasteel will be the "filler" game I play.  I can imagine it takes a long while to play regardless.

I actually think I'm going to fire up Ys I and II.  I was putting that off for a while, but it does require some time investment.  I will save Neutopia for when I have less time to dedicate towards games.  Simply because there is no leveling required in Neup.

Yeah, I played for 3 hours last night, with some decent leveling and gold farming, and I'm already in Darm.  It's been eight or nine years, but once I got into the Mine, I knew right where to go.

Man that game has a FANTASTIC soundtrack.

The best of all time. One of my favorite parts of the game is later, when the ruddy-red clouds are rushing past and the death knells are a-soundin'. Everything is perfect.

You know, I may be called every Turbo-bad name in the book for this, but I like the Ys IV version of the Darm Tower song just slightly more that the original.  Maybe because I have this affinity for when Robert Smith just adds some horns to a Cure song and calls it a "Dizzy "X" remix,"  but I just like the cheesy Ys IV horn version.

Right as the instrumentation begins to build in the song and I expect to hear the horns blow like a Michael Anthony bass blast from the eighties, I get the squealing git-ar solo and I'm just ever so slightly dissappointed.  Of course the original hook is not without it's charm or is in any way diminished.

It might also have to do with the fact that my current favorite album is the Miles Davis - Porgy and Bess recordings.

Nah it's cool, the Ys IV remix of Darm Tower sounds great. It has a lot more groove and funk to it, which is down with me. Though I still prefer the original as I found it more fitting and for it's total 80's-ness :) .

That's what I figured, but if offsidewing was in Darm......  I don't want to think about it.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'm partial to the original version of the Tower tune as well.  The Ys IV remix is good stuff, but the original just tastes better.  There's no need to hammer anyone's appreciation for the Ys IV version though, as it's still Ys (and therefor great).

I'd call it a localization.

However, in the immortal words of The Comic Book Guy in response to a patron asking about Rick Hunter stuff, "It's Hikaru Ichijo, you ignoramous."

If you have one of the Ys animes on DVD, I forget which one (I think the second DVD for Ys I), it includes a live music video from the JDK band performing it. I don't think it's very metalish, but the video was really 80's and cool!

If you don't own the dvd, you can download the video here-

http://superpcenginegrafx.com/ys_jdk.wmv

I also have it on YouTube if you're into that.

Its one of the greatest music videos I've ever seen(being an Ys fan of course). The music is very Children of Bodom'y, if you're into that.

The Ys Legacy dvd set is worth it just for the extras.
