Title: What does your girlfriend or wife think about your old game collection?
Post by: Golgo13 on May 29, 2007, 08:55:26 PM
My girlfriend and I are very opposite, she claims to hate anything from the 80's, especially music but also video games or systems which look 80's to her, and that includes turbografx stuff, even though its more towards early 90's.

Recently when I got my PC engine GT, I was really excited and smiling and she looks at it and says:

"What is that?!"

me: "Its an older system that was the best back in the day! Its a portable turbo grafx!"

"Oh my god, that thing is soo 80's! Terrible!"

me: "What the hell are you talking about?...."

"look at it, you can tell that thing survived the 80's"

me :"look at what, its f*cking awesome, what the hell is wrong with you!?"

"Oh so you just had to have it huh?  You couldnt buy it as a kid so now you think your all badass now with your turbo whatever..."

me: "Your damn right I do!"

Anyway yea, its typical dialogue like this that I live with, my girlfriend doesnt have a problem with video games, she really likes the DS lite and mario kart and yoshis island, but I dont play it much at all, im too busy building my turbo power collecion, its like my friend paulie used to say "Dont ever let a woman think for you."  Her problem isnt that its games, its that its "Too 80's"

This knowledge has been useful, when I feel like pissing her off, I simply play turbo grafx while listening to some kind of overkill 80's band like Hall and Oates or something, works every time! hahahahahaha

Any of you have any stories?

Awesome!  Be sure to tell your girlfriend that Mario Kart was designed in the 90s.  Since she is so hip and now, she'll have no desire to play the game anymore.

Anyway my GF buys me old school games.

Does this include people born in the 80s?  Seriously, any chick who said that to me would get the boot.  :?

lol!  :D Love the story - my girlfriend's kind of like that too and I LOVE to wind her up about it! Like the time I was on one of the sega forums I'm  a member on and someone somehow found out that if you take a SMS2 loose, and rub your hands incredibly fast over the vents at the back it makes a weird noise - so I waited 'til she was asleep then sneaked in under cover of darkness and began 'rubbing away' (sic) right over her head! Man she was annoyed!

But you see that's the thing - I found out that her being annoyed by my 80's and 90's stuff was HER weakness and not mine, so I now take every opportunity to annoy her!

awesome. so what's the reason for her 80's-hate? in terms of videogames, there was no other period more interesting than the 80's.

I dunno, something about how when she was younger, the dance clubs she would go to would sometimes play 80's music and she would get real pissed off at the DJ for doing so.  But keep in mind its women we are talking about so logic does not play any role.  There isnt always a logical explanation.

Another vote for kicking her to the curb (eventually).  The relationship can't be to great anyway - considering you're looking for reasons to piss her off.   Next time she starts complaining about the Turbo goods, just point at your crotch and tell her "It ain't gonna suck itself".  That's what I like to call a 'conversation ender'.

Well, I'm a trendy guy, so here's one more for losing the snooty cow.

Seriously, I've always said and I'll say again, if her personality doesn't mesh with your Turbo lifestyle, maybe you two aren't such a good match.

My wife surprised me the other day. I was talking about possibly selling off my video collection someday (in the far, far distant future). She responded with, "Don't be ridiculous-- I will NOT let you do that." Then she went on about how cool that stuff would be to show our currently nonexistent kids sometime after they happen to start existing and could appreciate games "from the old days". Keep in mind she is not a gamer like me, which is why the response surprised me a little. On the other hand, she is no hater and appreciates everything I like on some level because, well, I like it.

THAT'S the kind of woman you need to find yourself.

My wife was shocked at how many game systems I had when I first moved all my crap in from my storage into our place.     (And I don't even have a lot compared to some people.)

In the end, she doesn't really care -- or at least if she does, I don't hear about it.  I don't give her too much crap about her junk, so I expect the same in return.

This is why I'm not getting a girlfriend.

As for Golgo13, I completely expect to watch Cold Case Files in 2029 and hear the horrific tale of a mutilated woman dumped in land fill. With a Bonk 3 HuCard embedded in her skull.

J/K Golgo.

Dont get me wrong guys, she isnt making wretched screeching noises about it or anything, she never has told me she doesnt like my games, but she does require attention, so sometimes when I want to play turbo duo and not listen to what she is saying, it can be annoying, but overall she is is a really good woman, Im 24 and she is 27 so she has become a little more bitchy as women tend to get at that age.

Use loads of cash as bait - nearly limitless funding for their nerdy ways will surely help reel 'em in.  I've also heard that listening to the ladies is a plus, but I don't believe it and refuse to even try.

I have lots of suggestions and recommendations.  I am actually in the process of writing a 'Hint Book' for guys on dating.  Honestly.  Posting on this forum has detracted from it!!   :-$

Since my editor is not willing to pay my living expenses, she'll have to wait for me to complete it on my own damn time around my hectic work life (which I post often from - like now).

It's not a 'get laid' type of book or my views on dating.  Women are complex and it's a way of helping dudes interact with women they are romantically interested in.  It also has a good "warning signs" section.

I am always here to help my Turbo brothers and sisters find a good match.

Just start talking to every hot girl you see, sooner or later you're bound to find one who isn't repulsed by you.  Don't compliment them either, EVER, until you're getting consistent sex.  Girls never respect guys who tell them how attractive they are.

I agree with this, but there is a balance, I live in europe now, but I assume you live in america, and if you live back there, the key word is "a$$hole".  Remember, dont be a nice guy, I had countless friends who never got any girls because the girls would say they are "Too Nice" and just want to be friends.  You have to be an a$$hole, and act like you dont give a f*ck about them, and they will like you, now the first one is always the hardest, after that, when other girls sense you have a girlfriend, they will be all over you.

Speaking of that, any of you guys notice that, you get a girlfriend and all of a sudden girls start showing up more and more and are more interested in you?

It goes with the "Bad Boy" theory.  It's exciting to be with a guy that you shouldn't be with.  Ooo, he's got a girlfriend...

more over...

Once you get a girlfriend, you're not trying so damned hard to get one (which is a HUGE turn off to the ladies) and they are attracted to you being yourself.

Unless "Yourself" happens to a guy thats "Too Nice" and then you should practice being someone else, like an a$$hole.  hahahahaha

I gotta hear this man, what warning signs

Three absolutes to stay away from, PERIOD:
1.  She talks to her mother more than her friends.
2.  Treats her pet like a child.
3.  Calls her former relationships "Ex'es"

Corresponding reasonings:
1.  She talks to her mother more than her friends for two reasons.  1.  She has no confidence in herself as a person.  Mom is always their to listen to her insecurities.  Which means she probably lacks the skills to make trusting relationships with other people.  2.  Controlling Mother.  Avoid at all costs.

2.  Good sign this chick is from a horribly broken home, but most importantly a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS.  Nothing like dropping $500 on Cirque du Solei and leaving after only 90 minutes because she doesn't want 'Molly' the long haired doggy to get lonely at home.

3.  Obvious sign that this chick is not over any of her past relationships and has serious closure issues.  Sometimes relationships just don't work out and this woman needs to know why for every single one and there must be an associative blame for the relationship ending.  Count on her to compare your relationship to every one she's ever had.

Not bad looking at all but i trade her in for a new model any ways.

Any body who's ignorant towards games from the 80's, is either spoiled by 3d or is part of the PS1 generation  :P

Unless she doesn't have found memorise of 80's and had a horrible experince back then.

Still any time i've had a GF there not too bother by my game collection.

Guess i'm lucky on that part.

My wife knows how goofy I get over video games, and while she doesn't fully appreciate it, she's happy as long as I don't get too obsessive and allow video games to interfere with the important things in life.

She likes Galaga, Ms. Pac Man, etc. etc., but she doesn't want to listen to video game music in the car, for example. (I tried to listen to PCE Dragon Spirit on the trip up to Boston, but she promptly vetoed it. We compromised and listened to Orange Juice instead).

My wife's #1 complaint is that I'm monopolizing all of the storage space in our home. Video games, books, magazines, CD's, records, LD's, etc. etc. eat up a lot of space.

If she found any old-skool computer or console item at a garage sale / thrift store, though, she wouldn't hesitate to get it for me. She recently got a fantastic Dual CS 5000 turntable that some fool was throwing out. No, she doesn't like all the space that my records occupy, but she knew I'd be stoked to have a nice turntable for the stereo in the family room. :)

Oh yeah?  Compare any of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books to any current videogame.  Videogames don't let you choose your own god damned adventure.  They are super-linear like Metal Gear Solid, Rallisport Challenge 2 and Tetris!  f*cking videogames.  They only WISH they could choose their own adventure!  Notice how they try to copy books by having TEXT in some games.  Puh-leeez!  And they try to copy music CDs and concerts by having music, and TV shows by having graphics.  Videogames are teh sux.

Some video games do let you choose your own adventure! Dragon Force comes to mind, though that isn't a good example. I guess Anearth Fantasy Stories might be a better example, but you get my drift. Video games still rule them all.

YEAH RIGHT!  Next you're going to say that videogames are better than motion picture masterpieces like Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3 and Shrek 3!!!  Then you'll say that the game industry makes more per year than the movie industry!  Gamez r teh worst!  Even shitty books like Lord of the Ringz is better than something st00pit like, like, like Gradius!  There weren't any Lords OR ringz in Gradius!

My wife is a big fan of the original Dragon Warrior, & digs all games.  I'm a nerd, & I'm really nice, & I payed attention to her, & tell her how beautiful she is, etc., etc., and tommorrow(June 1) we celebrate our 5th Anniversary!  And believe me when I say it doesn't feel like it's been that long.  Maybe a year or 2.  It's still hard to believe I'm married, since I never had any real girlfriends up until her.  And things are great.  So, I'm not bragging, but, I'm showing ya'll, you don't need to be a buttmunch to find the RIGHT girl

Every girl I ever tried to f*ck or f*cked had no clue what the hell the original dragon warrior was.  So I will make a disclaimer about my previous advice: If a girl knows what dragon warrior from 1989 is, you dont need to be an a$$hole, but good luck.

Video games are better than motion pictures! Just compare an epic war game like Insector X to lame shit like Star Wars. And YOU ARE WRONG, JOE! There are LORDS and RINGZ in Gradius! The lords are the ones who master da game and the ringz are from da ripple laser! GUESS WHO'S WRONG!

Wow, I didn't figure anyone else on a PCE board would know Orange Juice.  "You Can't Hide Your Love Forever" is a great album.

Don't get too excited.  No one's picked up on my Captain Beefheart references and no one batted an eye at my mention of the Chrissy Hynde/ Adam Seymour cover of 'Nebraska.'

Although, I'd be impressed if anyone knew the names, in chronological order, of the drummers the Cure has had without the aid of the internet.

Blazing Lazers rocks, and my wife thinks so too.

You know I was thinking about comparing the music from Ys to Captain Beefheart, but instead decided to use N'sync for some reason.

Absolutely :). For some reason, I really like "Upwards and Onwards" even though there are better tracks on that album. I don't know what it is... the song has been stuck in my brain for some reason.

We listened to "Rip it Up" on the way to Boston :). My daughter (3+ years old) actually likes that album and allowed us to listen to it. I was grateful. I don't think I could have listened to another round of Sesame Street songs (although I don't think I'll ever get sick of Grover singing "Monster in the Mirror" :) ).

I only have Trout Mask Replica and some compilation "best of" album :( . I never really had the desire to check out anything else, though, to be honest.

I don't think I could name more than two folks who have been in The Cure, let alone the drummers... wait, I can only name one person and he's the singer! No joke :).

My wife collects cloth diapers. There's no way in hell she's going to whine about me collecting classic video games.

I could see any child really liking the song "Rip It Up" as it sounds so bouncy and goofy.
