They are seperate systems, but there was only ever like a half a dozen or so games made that run exclusively on the SuperGrafx (from what I have been reading, anyway) so unless you are a hardcore videogame console collector and need one to fill a gap in your collection, it probably would not be worth the megabucks these things sell for. They do play all the regular PC Engine games, but you can get a Core Grafx, CDROM and IFU30 for less and not miss very much.

Only five games were released for the system and apparently only Daimakaimura and 1941 are good. You may try to justify the investment by believing the Supergrafx version of Daimakaimura is better than the Genesis one.

You're forgetting the 2 PC Engine games that play in an enhanced mode on the SGX! :P

It's a cool looking system and fun to use, but definitely not worth the big bucks some people are asking for them. Cool to have for the sake of PC Engine completeness but far from necessary. A modded Duo will set you back around the same amount of coin and provide much more enjoyment. All that said, I do own one of the SGX beasts and wouldn't give it up.

I own a SGX.  I think Granzort is also pretty good, and many people like Aldynes.

However, as far as Daimakaimura is concerned, my friend was obsessed by it recently (managed to 1cc it!) and was playing the Capcom classics arcade-perfect version.  He says that much of it is indeed arcade perfect (in the way it plays), much more so than the MD version.  And he'd know.

I've always wanted a Super Grafx, and I'm glad I have one, though it's a luxury.  Just wait till I get my ass in gear and start making Supergrafx games though ;)

The system itself is awesome!  Regardless of the number of games.  Aldynes rocks!  1941 is a really good arcade port, and Daimakaimura is a f*ck ton better than the MD/Genesis version.  The system is fairly inexpensive so why not get one if you want to play any of those games?

Also:  Holy thread resurrection!  :shock:

Just not counting them, since you can still play them on a regular PCE. A matter of opinion.

also aldynes is an awesome game and exclusive too. so why saying that only daimakai and 1941 are good?


also granzört is far from a bad game, and battle ace was pretty cool back then, so I woulnd't consider that a bad game too.

makes the SGFX instantly the best game quantity vs. quality system ever released.

Also, the Super Grafx can play PC Engine games.  So if you wanted to get a PC Engine, it's not that much more to get a Super Grafx.

Also, the Super Grafx can play PC Engine games.  So if you wanted to get a PC Engine, it's not that much more to get a Super Grafx.

It also has slightly better audio than most PCE hardware.

Really?  I thought is had the same soundchip and the only only real hardware difference was the doubling of RAM and graphics chip.  Or do you mean better by built-in stereo (no booster required)?

If it actually had a better soundchip, that would be quite awesome!

Maybe the hardware is better in a design sense, and although the audio will sound the same as a PCE perhaps the output quality is higher on the SGX (cleaner signal, mixed better, better amp etc)?

Is the SGX even capable of fancier audio with its extra chips? I thought audio was combined with the main CPU, so I'm guessing audio wasn't improved at all on the SGX? If this is the case, it's unfortunate that they beefed up the video hardware but neglected audio.

...but then NEC would have called it SuperGrafx-n-Audio.

It's too bad the SGX didn't get more use. Though I'm guessing it was rather expensive. But if you threw that into the DUO it would have made for a nice combo. I think I recall a thread where someone said that Street Fighter II' one character's graphical animations took up around 128K. Well with the SGX and Super CD-ROM format you might have been able to pull it off since the SGX brings up the work RAM to 64K. And in general the added RAM could have helped with HuCards and using compression since you have a bigger buffer to decompress to. I wonder if any of the SGX titles utilized the extra RAM to use compression to fit more into those HuCards.

It would be fun to see a homemade SGX DUO. I bet it could be done.

There's an audio upgrade (revision 6280A) in one of the CoreGrafx models over the original PCE. I believe it's the CoreGrafx model 1 because it came out about the same time as the SGX (which has the upgraded revision).

There's popping on the corresponding channel's DAC when volume is adjusted. It's relative to the size of the adjustment, but it can get pretty loud/noticeable if the change is large (in either direction, including turning 'off' the channel). So the revision cpu fixes this (since the audio chip is included in the same package as the cpu) and gives a little smoother audio.
