Screw alcohol, drink some Super Chill Pineapple pop.

I'll compromise and throw some rum in a can of Super Chill Pineapple soda.  "Pop" - Is your dad going to jerk off into a cup?

That's kinda disrespectful towards TD, Necro.

How so, Kitsune?  The message is clearly directed at Keranu's message and it's just a joke (stolen from Andrew Dice Clay) about why not to use the word 'pop' in place of 'soda'.  If it's disrespectful simply because it's vulgar, then why no tears for 'ass' and 'hooker'?

I am a strong anti-soda user, that word is stupid. The closest I come is saying "sodapop", but that's kinda pushing it. Pop all the way man.

I was about to drill you for not keeping it real.  In Nebraska it's pop dammit!

In Texas, we just say "I'm going to get a Coke".

This usually never means Coke, it most likely means Dr. Pepper, as we are probably the world's largest consumer base for that drink.

Yeah I know, I was surprised that Necromancer, being a Nebraskan, said SODA! Out here near the Chicago area, especially the good old south subburbs 8) , we're all for pop.

I'll actually use 'pop' about 70% of the time and 'soda' only about 30% of the time (inconsistent - it's how I roll).

This usually never means Coke, it most likely means Dr. Pepper, as we are probably the world's largest consumer base for that drink.

Wasn't Dr. Pepper first created in Waco?  I don't remember if that's were it was first mixed, but I do remember visiting the Dr. Pepper museum there about ten years ago.

Yeah, I mostly call it 'pop', but 'soda' doesn't immediately mark you as a ferner 'round these parts. ;)

I included that in my Senior will upon graduating from highschool in 95.

I like to get a drink of water from the "bubbla" when I'm thirsty.

Wait, what exactly is "pop"? I've almost never heard that word being used (on tv or otherwise). Is it just a different word for soda, or what? :P

Yes.

Anyone who refers to it as "soda" is clearly a numbskull.

Happy belated birthday, Turbo D.  I hope yours was better than mine.

By the way, I also use the term "pop" and only use "soda" as a prefix to "pop".  I never say soda by itself unless I mean club soda.

I should've figured this considering you're part of the Nerd HURD  . That's jawesome though since I had no clue what Canadians called it!

Right on to everyone else who calls it pop!!! (http://lazerdorks.org/forum/images/smiles/icon_kait.gif) (http://lazerdorks.org/forum/images/smiles/icon_kait.gif) (http://lazerdorks.org/forum/images/smiles/icon_kait.gif)

EDIT: Wait, what exactly do you call it out there in Canada, Black_Tiger? Pop?

Holy crap, using "soda" vs. "pop" as a guide, only sophisticated heathens (such as myself) use the proper term: SODA.

SODA, you bastards. It's SODA.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're part of a Rice Krispies commercial:

"Oh snap! Let's smoke some crackle and drink some pop! Wooohoo!"

SODA, you bastards, it's goddam friggin' SODA.

Oh yeah... happy birthday :).

Screw you and your east/west side lingo! POP sounds way cooler and you know it! And technically, I don't think "soda" is necessarily the proper name since the real proper name would be "sodapop", so it doesn't really give a clear answer. Soda seems like it would make more sense, but it just sounds dull plus when you open up pop cans, it makes a POPping sound. Pop is clearly the correct word.

EDIT: Wait, what exactly do you call it out there in Canada, Black_Tiger? Pop?

I can't speak for all Canadians, but here in Alberta, it's definitely Pop.  And Canadians I met from other places (BC, Prairie, as well as Maritime places) also seem to refer to it as Pop.  So... I guess that means most people say Pop in Canada.

Though I'm a "Soda" man myself. :D

Still, I think some non-north Americans call 'em fizzy drinks.  I recall a Brit and a Kiwi who said that.  Oh, and they also call 7-up/sprite type soft drinks "lemonade".

Thanks for the very informative post, thumpin_termis. I found it especially interesting that Brits call 7-up-like drinks lemonade, though I think I remember hearing that before.

Hmm, In most cases I either name the soft drink type by name, but if I wanted to talk about the category of "soda pop" then I tend to say "soft drink".  Though, that might be the french-canadian side of me. :P

That said there used to be these stores called "The Pop Shoppe" where you would go and mix and match different types of soft drinks...  So I would agree that "pop" is used here. :P

Oh, someone is trying to bring it back: http://www.thepopshoppe.com/flash_site/main.html

Leave it to us to derail a thread about someone's birthday into a debate over soft drink titles. :P

Well, I asked my wife and apparently it's called "Soft Drinks" in Malaysia (since everyone just orders what they want by name.)

Then she went off on a discussion about "Sarsi" (sort of a sasprilla/root beer mix) and "Kickapoo (Joy Juice)" (sort of a sweet ginger drink) sold in Malaysia.  Then, there was this "Manzanita Sol" apple soft drink we had in Mexico... Mmmm....

That reminded me on how I couldn't find decent Ginger Ale in Atlanta (they mixed coke and sprite together...?!).

Coke and Sprite mixed together? WTF? :x

Dude, when it comes to Ginger Ale, either have Canada Dry or Schweppes.  No cheapskate substitutes.

I know...  My next surprise was when I got some Ginger Ale in Malaysia...  It was GINGER ale.  Kickapoo Joy Juice is a much better alternative for Ginger Ale in Malaysia...

How's that for derailing a thread. :P

SPRITE=LEMONADE?!  WTF Mate?!  Why don't they just call it ketchup?

7 Up was originally called Lithiated Lemon Lime Soda.  After they stopped putting lithium in it they decided it needed a different name, so 7-Up was the natural choice.
