Title: A photo I snapped during my recent trip
Post by: Black Tiger on June 29, 2007, 03:26:28 PM
My home town of Prince Rupert has always had a lot of wild life around, but much of it, especially deer, have been moving more and more into the city.

Here's a photo I took across the street from my Dad's house-

Thankfully I can usually stick to the main roads, but there are some streets around here (Twin Cities) where you really have to drive carefully, especially at night, or you run the risk of having a bunch of deer charging straight at your car.  Most of the time you can just stop driving and they'll meander across the road in peace, but sometimes they get the crazy idea in mind of making a mad dash just as a car is going past, and end up crashing right into the side of the vehicle.

That's a nice pic.  Your dad's neighbor needs to amend his sign to include deer.

Nice pic.  I like how they're all standing next to the "no dogs" sign.

I used to go riding a lot in a stretch of mountain roads called Angeles Crest in So. Cal, and I recall this one guy who just hit a deer on his motorcycle rode up to the hang out spot.  Amazing he was still walking and stuff, but the real thing that stuck in my mind was when he showed us his bike -- it still had bunch of deer fur stuck between the fairings on the bike.

Nice picture, we got a lot of deer here as well. One time I saw 21 of them at the same time. Crazy. :P

Deer have an innate instinct that tells them the only way to escape death is to cross the road in front of the vehicle.  Once on the way to school a deer raced the school bus for almost a mile and looked like it was dying of exhaustion when the driver finally slowed down so the deer could overtake the bus and cross in front of us.

Great pic, for the reason everyone has stated already ("No Dogs!") :)

Haha, poor thing.

We also have a lot of large families of geese who like to plod across the road in long single-file lines, an adult or two leading the way, an adult or two in the rear, and a long string of chicks in between.  The larger flocks can back up traffic quite a long way as they make their gradual exodus, especially when one of the chicks stupidly decides to stop walking and just stand there.  Even the adult geese get pissed about this, it's hilarious.

Geese are some of the craziest animals alive. Those things get PISSED OFF at ANYTHING! They really have mad thoughts running around in their brains.

That's what I love about them. We humans have been encroaching on their turf and they're fed up. They're not going to take it anymore. Good for them!  :)

I hate geese.  They are not natural to Colorado, yet they are all over the place because people feed them!  And what do they offer in return?  Parks where it is hard to take a single step due to all of the goose-droppings.  They need to die.  I always chase them or throw things at them.  I want to poison their food.  Geese are not pretty.  The population definitely needs trimming.

I'd still rather feed a goose than a homeless person, though.

During the drive up there, my mother(driving in a seperate vehicle) hit a Canadian Goose that was running all over the highway.  :|

Despite their scary beaks, these birds are cool doods!

I'm sure the geese have the same fantasies about you, Joe. Don't worry, they might just succeed.  :)

Ducks don't seem to have anger problems like geese do, despite how similar they look. Geese must have some kind of chemical inbalance in their heads or something. Sometimes I think they are bipolar too.

Such compassion..... yet I agree.  Goose paté is far better tasting than hobo paté..... wait, you said feed not eat.  My mistake.  :)

I'd like to think the geese were simply standing up for their rights, especially since they have to deal with human chauvinists on a daily basis.

Lest you think I'm joking -- I'm not. :)

All geese must die.  I worked on a golf course with my best friend for a couple summers during college.  Mowing greens and taking care of the course and such.  Geese are dirty, lazy, and less than intellegently gifted.

That same best friend has a Ph D in something ecological and works for the DNR.  I wish the "Goose Ladies" in every town across North America understand the ecological devistation they are wreaking on the enviornment every time they hand out bread to a goose.

Instead of bread, try popping a couple of .22 rounds into that shitting squaker.

If you want to talk about ecological devastation, we should, of course, point the finger squarely at ourselves (golf courses are but one item on an innumerable list of horrors).

I know you goose-haters are acting pretty smug in this thread, but you fail to appreciate that the GEESE ARE GOING TO LIBERATE ANIMALKIND from their human oppressors.

They are the commandos (marines) of the animal world.

Dude, I just hit a deer with my car last night and I thought about this thread right afterwards! The deer didn't die and limped off into the woods immediately and somehow my car was practically scratchless from it, but my front tire popped (after my back tire blew out not even a month ago).

On a different trip home a couple years back, I was doing about 120km on the highway around a gradual corner with very light rain when a mother deer and medium sized fawn appeared in the middle of the road.

I actually managed to brake perfectly without getting rear ended by traffic. But at the last second before I completely stopped, the fawn completely went under the view of the windshield of the minivan. After a few seconds though, it popped it's head up and ran into the bush after its mother, letting out a screech as it jumped through a farmer's barbwire fence.

I sure am glad that I've never actually hit/killed anything.

Holy shit...

...you're old enough to drive now?    Time flies!

Seriously though, I'm glad to hear it wasn't a major accident.  A deer left a massive dent in the side of my car a few years ago, but insurance considered it an act of God and took care of it.

Actually just got my Alberta license -- (though this is now my fourth license).

And Is it just me or only idiots work at these licensing centers, WORLD over?  This is the 2nd country where I had to show these morons proof working there using THEIR documents that my motorcycle endorsements transfer over (same thing happened in Korea).  And don't even get me started about California DMV.

On top of that, the first registry center I went didn't like my "proof of legal residency", so I just drove over a few blocks to another one, and these guys didn't even ask for such papers at all.  Ever wonder how terrorists and illegal residents get legal IDs?

Oh, and that goes for embassies and consulates too.  It seems like they only hire the laziest imbeciles to staff these places.

I've killed  a couple of deer, including a fawn whose legs I accidentally severed.  It was a horrible experience.  Not many people know it, but a fawn in extreme dispair lets out a horrifying scream that almost sounds like that of a human child.  I still feel terrible about it to this day.

I think I hit a raccoon once.  I was driving home late at night and it ran into the middle of the street.  I tried to slow down in order to avoid it, but it freaked and I clipped it with my car.  I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw it hobbling off to the other side of the street.  It really does make you feel bad, even though I hate raccoons.
