Title: All X-box 360 owners have 3 year warranty if "Red Rings of Death" appear!!!

Well, I guess this is good news for all X-box 360 owners. So, if you bought your system like me in July 2006 for example, then you get free repair/replacement until July 2009. It seems it only refers to the "Red Ring of Death" problem and not little software HD/Disc Drive complications. You could always put your system in an oven at 70 degrees Celsius and then throw it in the freezer to give it the red rings, so you get free replacement most likely. Hmmmm, good idea.

This still doesn't fix the problem with people sending off their systems to end up with another high failure rate prone system. So, what they really need to do is revise the motherboard completely and then send you that instead of your dead system. So hopefully, if my system is one of the ones to go out.... it will be when they have the revised systems and they replace it with that model at my request. I am sure the better models will come out by this fall, maybe November if they do it in time. So far the Elite is better, but not by much. It will just last a little longer if it is a model to die.

Hasn't the warranty always been three years? It's been here, anyway.

Not in the US and definitely not in the UK. If anything it was 1 year for anyone who had a launch console from like November 2005. Then they offered free shipping or something in April. Microsoft is just basically trying to avoid a huge disaster of class action lawsuits for having a 30% failure rate. It is just wrong to overcharge for a system like that to the point where they also make money off repairs. The 1 billion would have turned to 3 or 4 billion if they didn't do this. Also, it would have lost any trust in the gaming community to ever buy a Xbox system of any sort for the rest of eternity. Therefore, Microsoft would be out of the console business. I kinda wish they would to be honest. It isn't like Microsoft needs to make money like Sega or Nintendo. I am just stuck with buying their system since the games are just leading towards that system.

I was going to buy a 360 when it first came out, I was really gung ho. But then the errors happened. I didn't want to drop all that cash for a pos, so I thought that I'd let them fix the problem before I bought one. Haven't bought one yet though. Do you know if they are still making and or shipping defective units. Have they fixed the problem yet? I want to get one to play Halo 3, but I don't want to get screwed by microsoft again. They've screwed me already in the past on my pc, haha.

I've been wanting an Xbox 360 (solely because of Halo 3) for some time, but I will not be getting one, because despite the very long warranty period, I'm still anxious about getting one. Since it WILL die on me, and that's annoying (among other things). Besides, if I were to get one, I'd probably install a hacked firmware in it, and that effectively voids the warranty. So, no 360 for me. Not until they fix this problem properly.

Seems the warranty thing is a Sweden-only thing or something. We have certain rules here that gives us the right to claim a new system if it breaks down by itself within three years of the purchase date (which applies to all electronics of this type). If the company refuses, they're in some damn hot water. It's a good policy.

If I ever start a synthmetal group, it will be called "Red Rings Of Death".

I bought my 360 maybe 6 months after it came out. The other four people I know in 'real life' who own them have never had any problems with them.

I honestly think that its just blown way out of proportion, but Microsoft should have a policy like this because it seems than any faulty systems really are defective.

so maybe there is hope. I think that when the elite comes out, probably all the bugs will be fixed.

I'd say the opposite. The way the 360 is designed is just outrageous, and I find it shocking that Microsoft hasn't ended up in some major legal issues yet. I find it shocking that it is actually legal to sell this console. The 360 should be taken off the shelves completely until they've fixed this huge problem. The fact that they haven't even attempted to fix it (the "Elite" system is just as useless as the old one, they're using the very same motherboard design) is also outrageous, and just completely unbelievable. Repairing the broken units must cost them billions of dollars! Shoddy products like these are almost completely unheard of, and the failure rate is without a doubt at least 30% (so far, all the still working systems are all going to die within at least a few years, no doubt). They themselves have announced significantly smaller numbers, but they have no obligation to present the actual numbers, so that'll never happen, obviously. Only Hong Kong-produced Famicom bootlegs and such are of worse quality.

They're publicly traded, so they are obligated to present factual numbers to shareholders.  Of course all those Enron accountants had to find work somewhere after their company imploded.

Don't forget the CD-i.  I'm pretty sure that they shipped from the factory pre-broken (or at least useless).

I hope I'm not required to have a receipt for this since my 360 was a gift from someone who is out of state (it was ordered online).  I have no way to prove when my 360 was purchased.  Of course I rarely power it up since there isn't much entertaining stuff to play on it, so hopefully it will never break down.

Well, I don't think it is blown out of proportion. My brother, and his close friends (~ a dozen +), grabbed the 360 within a few months of launch (a few got theirs on launch day). Basically, once one person saw how neat the 360 was, there was a domino effect and everyone eventually got one.

I can tell you how many units have had serious issues (not simply the Red Rings) -- easily 4-6 of them, and at least 3-4 had to be "fixed" / replaced more than 2 times. The only thing that prevented them from getting really, really p*ssed off was that they would shift their attention back to WoW. But they were still pissed (because they love 360) *and* because many of them have had at least one unpleasant experience with customer service when trying to resolve the hardware problems.

I should point out that they experienced problems even though they were using cooling fans to improve ventilation and despite the fact that they "pamper" their consoles more than the average video game enthusiast.

I'm sure there are tons of folks who haven't had a big problem with 360, but something definitely is going on.

I hope they weren't using those stupid Nyko intercoolers, those are known to f*ck systems up.

Although I hadn't had any problems with my system, I bought a cooler (don't know if its Nyko) for it just in case.

It worked reallly well and kept my system to only slightly warm at the centre in stead of hot.

But after I installed a shiny black casing, I took apart the cooler to paint it black. After I put it back together I had to loosen one fan because there was a clicking sound. After that I eventually had my system shutdown ocassionally when the loose cooler slipped out too far.

If it clicked in like the power supply plug does it'd be perfect.

You are really better off just using a regular small external room fan going to the air intake of the system around open space. Those inter coolers draw off the power of the system/adapter. It can cause power fluctuations and drag it down some. Buy some external 12V whisper fans if you want a better outflow from the back of the system.

My trick is that my entertainment center is right above and in front of the central AC vent on the floor. I put my system on a small shelf with lots of open air space that gets direct air from the AC vent. This prevents the system from ever getting too hot. The main issue with detaching CPU and GPU chips = Dead system is the solder joints loosening when the system is too hot then cools down too fast. If the system doesn't get hot to begin with, then that should prevent the problem. Also, the air flow out of the back of the system can build heat against a wall or board behind it and re flow into the system. So definitely have air space behind and to the right of the system if horizontal (It would be unwise to have your system vertical anyways).

This fall they are replacing the 95nm cpu with a 65nm. So that should help with some heat issues. Most likely there will be better heat syncs and some board revisions all together. I would just wait till then to buy a system.
