Title: For those that have someone on the ground.....
Post by: retrodelee on August 01, 2007, 07:40:48 AM
Strange request... I know...

But I'm looking for an Atari Lynx game that was a bit different than the US release.

I know this is a PC-ENGINE forum... but it would be great if you can help me out in this area as well.

What I'm looking for is KLAX
Look at the pictures below to see what I need:

The one I need is the one with the strange LUMP in it.  (the one on the left)

The box:

It is not needed... but if I can get it as well... that would be great!

Another shot:

If anyone has any leads as t where I can get one... that would be great.

Now... back to PC Engine stuff!  (I just ordered my system and games!  I can't wait to get them!!!!  :) :) :)

Interesting, I've never seen this oddball Klax version.  Is the game any different, or is it just the packaging?

Hmmm, I've never seen that either  :-k

A thread over at Atariage mentions the following:

Quote
Here's a listing of what I see in the original version:
Static Title Screen (quiet)
Title Screen (w/ Background Music, Animated, w/ Changing Programming Credits)
Skill Select Screen (w/ Background Music)
Select A Wave Screen (1,6,11,11, w/sound effects when moving cursor)
How to Play Screen (Animated, w/ sound effects)
Klax Wave Screen (w/ voice effects introducing 'Klax Wave')
Main Game (tapping as tiles come down, sound/voice effects as Klax are made,
clapping when a level is passed)

Here's what happens in my Japanese version of Klax:
Static Title Screen (quiet)
Select A Wave Screen (1,6,11,11, no sound effects when moving cursor)
Klax Wave Screen (quiet)
Main Game (tapping as tiles come down, no sound/voice effects as Klax are made,
no clapping when a level is passed)

In summary, I've observed a number of things missing from my
Japanese version, such as: The main animated title screen and
credits, the skill select screen (I haven't tried to figure out what
skill level the Japanese version defaults to), the 'how to play'
screen; Moreover, the main game is lacking most of the sound/
voice effects of the 'real' version. In my opinion, this takes away
a lot of the visceral appeal of the original, and makes it a far less
enjoyable version to play. I haven't played this version all the
way to completion, but it wouldn't surprise me if the end of game
sequence has been removed as well (seeing as it appears that
they were trying to save ROM space by truncating the game.)

I've tried my cartridge on several different Lynx (including both
Model I and II), and have gotten the same result on all of them.
My best guess as to why you are not seeing these differences
would be that you have a variation of the japanese varation.
But if you have a complete working version, that means perhaps
that at some point during production they switched back to the
the full released version. Maybe peeling back the sticker, and
looking at the markings on the pcb will solve this mystery, but
I'm not quite brave enough to attempt it.

Yet another person mentioned that he had a version of the Jap Cart that did NOT have any difference other than the strange appearance of the cart style

Strange stuff...

All I know is that I need the cart for my collection!  LOL

I saw it at the Midwest Gaming Classic.

The Lynx dude has a Near world-wide complete collection... or maybe it is complete...

Yep... I haven't REALLY looked too hard for it... but eventually I'll grab it.  I think I need 5 games for the full commercially released collection.

I still need to grab some homebrew and Songbird titles as well... but I think my collection is standing right at 90 games for the Lynx.

It looks like maybe the one with the lump has a Super-FX chip added for polygon power!  Maybe Starfox 2 is built in.

who knows!  No one will take the label off to look at the insides.  Hell... it may take me years to find this.  So I doubt I will either.

So are you in the air or something?  Did you make this thread from an airplane?  I don't get it.

For those that have someone on the ground.....

Meaning:   If somebody here happened to know/have someone in JAPAN (on the ground... searching for stuff).... would it be possible to ask to said person to look for this one Atari Lynx item for me.

I figure that most people understood what I meant

No, because as far as I know most other countries have their own ground as well.

Well,on the ground as opposed to being in the air then you mean? When they invented Japan I know since then they have invented many awesome things, giant city destroying monsters,a market for used panties, anime about sports, the Neo Geo and PcEngine, but as of yet have not seen them invent any type of homes, city,or game shops suspended on air. Please fill us in on this air theory. Like Keranu said,we'd like to know more about this.

Nope.  And you are not filling us in because....?

Maybe we are required to be manga and/or anime nutjobs to understand.

Joe, you are so in the closet. I'm truly embarrassed for you. Just because you collect memory cards and game controllers instead of laserdiscs and garage kits doesn't make you any less of a slobbering otaku nerd. Quit putting on airs. Your presence on this forum, and imminent reply to this post are proof of my point.

Dude, you just GOTTA come over and see my memory card and game controller collection!  I have 'em all... well, I am missing a Pelican memory card for the PS2.  But I am prepared to pay at least $200 for it on eBay!

I wonder if there is some dude that collects 3rd party shit like Pelican memory cards. There probably is. In the past I always though collectors mainly liked high quality, usually 1st party/official releases more than anything. Usually exciting stuff, imports, hardcore genre releases, etc...

Then I started hanging out around here and found out people were paying $100 for shitty HuCard adaptors. Anything is possible, I guess. I also know of a guy that collects PS2 games. Not rare, interesting, import PS2 games, just average everyday US release PS2 games. He doesn't really give a shit what they are, just that they cost less than $20. That's pretty unexciting, IMO. To have a huge pile of hundreds of sports games and Quake clones.

I'd pay good money for a copy of Terrifying 911 for GBC.

Dude if there is a guy who collects root beer cans, there are people who will collect third party video game accessories! (http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/neils/rootbeer.html)

MY PREEEECIOUSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
Mwuhahahaha!  Thanks for the laugh.

I can't believe all you jokers are expecting some sort of airborne video game shop.  Japan is an island.  Haven't you ever heard of dudes selling games from the back of a row boat or stores built on barges?  There's more than just land and air.  Duh.

P.S. - What kind of rock do you have to hide under to never have heard the term 'on the ground'?

Once all of the chaos emeralds are returned to japan, it will once again float into the sky.

Thanks for talking down to us Necromancer.  Someday we hope to be as awesome as you, but we know we can't so we'll probably just commit suicide or something since we are obviously so useless.  But no, I have never heard of people selling games from a boat.  Should I have?  And the thread title makes it sound like he's posting from somewhere not on the ground, either the air or the sea (or even outer space OMG!).

What the hell????  It is pretty damn simple... This version of this particular cartridge style of this particular game has only been found in the Japan region.  Air, boat, Ski Doo, whatever.

I posted this in the forums to simply ask if someone had someone searching for games in Japan.... could they possibly ask for them to search for this as well.  It does not take a genius to figure out what I am trying to say here.  I'm not looking for someone in the air or a boat.  I'm not looking to buy this within some shop located in the clouds like the shops in Magical Chase.

For those that actually did show intrest in this... Thank you.  For some... blah.  LOL

Back on a serious note:  If anyone has the means to track down this version... please let me know the cost.  Orgin of the cart does not matter.  Unless it comes from a submarine.  I heard that version of the game is sub-par  :)
Thank you.
