Title: Wii wishes it was PcEngine
Post by: Turbo D on August 10, 2007, 09:48:37 PM
So, I noticed that the wii wishes that it was the pcengine. It had its innards designed by nec and it put itself in a small white box around the size of a pcengine. If that weren't proof enough, It made itself backwards compatible with pcEngine games. Yup, its true.

It's not backwards compatible.  I put my PCE CDs in there and they do not play.  Instead I am left to play boring Wii games or to pay to download games I already own (wow, GREAT idea!)

Hell my Wii that I purchased in February already needs to be sent back to Nintendo for repair due to video defects.

My friend runs the highest grossing GameCrazy store in the US and they are getting a shipment of Wiis on Tuesday, one of which he will put aside for me. Yay me! I guess that's only special because technically they are not allowed to do that (first come, first serve).

Hell my Wii that I purchased in February already needs to be sent back to Nintendo for repair due to video defects.

What kind of video defects are you experiencing, Joe?

Probably really, really bad graphics and horrible gameplay, but I think those are defects that all Wii owners are experiencing.

At least us Wii owners can actually play our consoles, unlike say, our 360 owners :P .

We can't play our consoles when there is nothing worthwhile to play!  That's like having a working Ford Pinto on a boat out at sea.

Keranu, chaoticjelly is looking for you.  See the NES controller thread in the Turbo repair forum.  Jesus christ where have you been?  And since you feel that nothing should ever be moderated, I'll just throw this out there:  You god damn f*cking son of a f*ck ass!  Your mom is a whore and she had anal sex with George W Bush last night.  f*cking f*ck f*ck!

Nat:
Vertical black lines comprised of flickering dots at random spots around the screen.  This is a known issue at Nintendo and there are even Youtube videos of people experiencing it.
Title: Re: Wii wishes it was PcEngine
Post by: Black Tiger on August 11, 2007, 12:48:16 PM
I had a single vertical line of dots appear on screen while playing Air Zonk. But there were also a couple other glitches too. Otherwise, I haven't had any problems other than the ugly scanlines in Zelda.
Title: Re: Wii wishes it was PcEngine
Post by: Joe Redifer on August 11, 2007, 01:32:43 PM
My lines appear everywhere, even on the Wii menu.  The lines are in different places depending on what the Wii is doing.  For example on the News Channels they are more collected toward the center of the screen.  I haven't played any games since there are none worth playing, but I imagine they show up in games as well.  Regardless, Nintendo offered to replace the Wii outright, but I said I'd rather try and keep what is saved in the backup RAM since I have 99 Miis in there.  So I have to send my Wii to Nintendo (they pay shipping).

Black Tiger, your problem will likely get worse.  Be sure to send it in before a year is up!

Some dude put up a video online of a split screen comparison of wii and turbografx bomberman. You guys probably already saw it though, haha. For those who haven't here it is;

If you look closely, you can tell that the turbo version is superior. The wii version seems brighter, but its only because it lacks all the different colors and effects of the original.

Um...I must be blind because I can't see any meaningful difference at all. Probably because Youtube video quality is so shitty.

The Wii version seems brighter because it is brighter (http://superpcenginegrafx.com/wii_video_temp.html). You need an S-Video or better mod to see the real image quality of the original game.

The main difference in general between Wii VC versions and the original games on real hardware is that VC games use an awful blurring filter and have distorted audio.

Bomberman '93 VC however, is missing the rumble animation of the building in the intro, has a new bomb sound effect and a gameplay addition.

Which version are we listening to on the Youtube video?  I know any emulation which the HORRIBLY SHITTY Digital Eclipse works on always has shitty sound effects because they just can't seem to get the sound emulation correct on anything they do.  Digital Eclipse is comprised of underskilled amateurs.  They must be really cheap to hire, because Konami and Capcom keep using them to make their broken arcade emulation collections.

The title screen isn't the best example, other than the new bomb sound effect. http://www.superpcenginegrafx.com/bomberman93tgtitle.mp3
the Turbo version. The battle music better contrasts the two, since the VC version stutters in spots.

I've got something in the works that'll shed light on the difference in sound quality (hopefully) very soon.

I don't think that's a new sound effect.  I think it's the same one, just bad emulation.  It's a synth sound, not a digitized one.  Still better than what Digital Eclipse usually does with their low standards.  Did Hudson write their own PCE emulator for the Virtua Console?

Well, even if its not a newly crafted effect, its the same difference since it sounds noticibly different. Its almost the same, except in a higher overall pitch with other distortions. Like a voice clip changed from a man's voice to a woman's. :P

Are Virtual Console games not worthwhile to play and is YouTube-ing on the Wii not a good idea? Beats paying even more for a console that won't even boot up or for a console that will make you go broke. ;) In the end, we should all own Pippin Atmarks though.

I set it up last night/early this morning.

I played a bit of Wii Sports and I'm really digging the controls. It's such a different experience than other video game systems. They should have kept the name "Revolution" though. Wii. What the f*ck is that? f*cking retarded, that's what.

However, my first impressions on unpacking the box were.... what the f*ck? My friend bought an XBOX 360 a couple weeks ago and of course it came with a component video cable included. So naturally, seeing as this is 2007, I expected S-VIDEO at the very least. It didn't even cross my mind the Wii would come with anything less. But no. The Wii comes with a vintage composite video cable.

Video quality aside, this is a problem because the only remaining inputs I have free are component. So now I have to physically "share" VIDEO4's composite input with the Dreamcast and plug/unplug cables all the time depending on what system I'm playing. What a f*cking pain.

I already have a full 4-way S-VIDEO switcher on VIDEO1, and a full composite switcher on VIDEO2.

The Wii uses some goofy proprietary connector on the console end like all Nintendo systems after the NES. Can I buy a component video cable with this connector somewhere?

Joe, you're a videophile and you own a Wii. What did you do?

I love Wii Sports. One of the best modern games I've played, seriously. It's simple and fun like games were back in the day, except it has it's own modern edge.

Not sure if you know tihs, but the previous Nintendo connectors won't work on a Wii as far as I know, even though they look the same.

S-Video is being phased out, not in. I'm pretty sure there has never been a game machine in history that came with an s-video cable, so I have no idea why you would expect such a thing.

The 360 is a $400 system made at a massive loss, the Wii is a $250 system that comes with a game, and is made at a small profit. The 360 is made for nerdball otaku that have money to blow on the latest of everything because they have no girl, the Wii is made for families that spend all that cash on gas for the minivan they can't afford to make payments on. You won't get the same stuff. Most people do not have a free component connector on their TV. If they even have one at all, its taken up by a DVD player, or an older game system.

You might be the only one in the world with this problem.

Why the f*ck are you playing the DC in composite when s-video, and more importantly VGA, are availible? Does your TV not have VGA input? This is 2007, as you pointed out, get with the program! :)

Yes, just like the PS, PS2, PS3, Saturn, Dreamcast, Megadrive 2, Xbox, XBox 360, Jaguar, etc etc. Game systems rarely come with standard sockets.

Gee, do you think, maybe? You can buy 3rd party ones for $10. Try that on a 360.

SignofZeta,

I wouldn't say S-Video is in the process of being phased out. As long as there are composite/RCA video connections on Televisions, the S-video will be around, for the most part. Nearly any recent manufactured television i've seen, that features the 3 RCA inputs, also features and S-Video input.

I don't see S-Video going anywhere, 'til HDMI and similar are on every television.

Soemthing I related to television that I see as in the process fo being phased out, are CRT displays. I'm curious, 5 years from now how much percentage of total televisions will be CRT's.

Anyway, it's not too surprising to me that a budget system (Wii) included the minimum video connection. More money can be spent by the purchaser to acquire a better connection, which means more money for Nintedo.

Though released years ago, I don't recal any of the PS2's or Gamecubes including anything other than composite video connection.

I think that the only reason S-Video got skipped over as a default connection is that consoles started using general-cable-connection-out dohickies like the SNES by the time many TVs even supported it.

And console makers are so cheap, that the 360 is the only system to ever ship with anything packed-in above composite (even Core package comes with composite).

I got my Wii hooked up to the 'net via my Mac's AirPort card. Yay me!

Now to download some VC games....
Title: Re: Wii wishes it was PcEngine
Post by: nat on August 24, 2007, 07:42:30 PM
I downloaded my first VC game: Space Harrier II. It's been the better part of 10 years (at least) since I last played through this game, or played it at all for that matter. But that's only because it was around '97 or '98 I left my Genesis outside in a box at my dad's house and all the metal components had rusted by the time I picked it up and tried to use it again. The years gone by have managed to form a nostalgic spot in my heart for the game despite the fact it pales in comparison to the original (or even the TurboGrafx port of the original). A great game by any means, however, though it lacks the difficulty of the original. Still, I feel it was $8 well spent. Now I have a "virtual" copy I can enjoy forever, safe and secure from the threat of rust and corrosion.

I probably will never bother with any of the other systems supported by VC since I still own working versions of all the consoles. For some reason I never got around to replacing the Genesis... More than likely because there are only a handful of games I really actually love that didn't appear on other systems. Through the power of the Virtual Console and my Dreamcast I can now once again enjoy those old favorites without yet another console taking up space and precious video inputs.

Come to think of it, I lied. When they get around to releasing Magical Chase (US version) for VC I will probably splurge for the $8 download fee rather than tapping my retirement fund for an actual cart.

In Space Harrier II, try this:  Play it from beginning to end on EASY difficulty (I think if you press A and Start (Genesis buttons, not Wii) on the title screen you get the menu selection).  Pretty easy to beat, eh?  Now go and select HARD.  Play through to the end.  Pretty easy to beat, eh?  Oh waitaminute!  Did the difficulty even change?  I personally can't tell if it's any harder or not.  Can you?

That game has perfect voice reproduction, though.  Perfect.  Not even one hint of digital artifacting.

I've noticed that in a lot of games where the difficult doesn't really change.

Hahaha, I've never tried that. In fact, I've only ever played it on "Normal" mode (the default) as far as I can recall. I'll give "Hard" a try later.

And the buttons are mapped as follows: Genesis button A is A on the Wii controller, B is 1 and C is 2. Start is mapped to the "+" button that's right.... where the Start button should be. I got to that mode selection menu by accident earlier when I was trying to figure out what was mapped to what (who reads documentation, anyway?). I'm really impressed by the way the Wii controller, er, remote feels & plays when turned on it's side in a "classic" orientation. I was thinking buying one of those "Classic Controllers" was going to be a must but now I've changed my mind.

That game has perfect voice reproduction, though.  Perfect.  Not even one hint of digital artifacting.

I've always marveled at that. Why didn't they share that space-age technology with other developers?

I'd forgotten how loud and abrasive the voice is (or maybe it's a side effect of the VC emulation?) but I nearly fell off my couch after I got hit the first time and I was abruptly instructed to "GET READY!" The voice was clearly several decibel levels louder than the music and other sound effects.

The voice reproduction in the TG port of the original is so pathetic it's inexcusable. Why did they even bother?

I think that those other developers were just homos who secretly wanted the genesis to fail

That must be an emulation glitch because the voice isn't that much louder than the music.  The Nintendo Wii is not powerful enough to handle Genesis-quality voices.

Don't be a hater. The Wii is awesome.

And no, I don't own a minivan.

Can you?
Hahaha, yes I got a kick out of this too! Shadow Blasters has this same problem too.

Anyone got the Metal Slug compilation for the Wii? My friend has it available for cheap [used] at his store and I'm contemplating picking it up. I like the Metal Slug games but don't own any currently. Since I don't have a Neo Geo, this seems to be the next best thing.

How faithfully emulated are the games?

I didn't care for the Wii version.  The GUI is messed up from what I remember.  Also, they really should have not made any Metal Slugs after part 3.  It gets extremely old.  It should be Metal Slug 1, Metal Slug X (or two (but not both), since that seems to be the same game, except during the day) and maybe Metal Slug 3.

Metal Slug is best in extremely small doses, especially since not a whole lot changes between games style-wise.
