Title: Multiplayer
Post by: lbblue on August 13, 2007, 11:30:03 AM
Besides the Bomberman series, why do I need a 5-player multitap? What games, if any, for the PCE or fun for 3+ players, especially non-gamers, like the lovely wife? Thanks in advance!
btw, preferably Hucard games...

Still more games are fun with only 2 players, such as Puyo Puyo, Panic Bomber, and Splash Lake. These are some games my wife likes to play with me despite the fact she is a "non-gamer".

I forgot about Chew Man Fu, but I can't see my wife getting into Aero Blasters.
There are a shit load of 2 player games, but relatively few my wife would be willing to play.
But then again, I skipped over the "HuCard" part and all the games I recommended are CD. Oh, well.

It should only be a few dollars, so you can check out "Legend of Dekoboko" (sp?) if you want a poor-man's Motoroader. It is a CD, 5-player overhead racer, akin to Motoroader, but it isn't executed properly. Some call Dekoboko crap, I call it "wasted potential". Actually, I never call it that. It is pretty lame. But I still say you should check it out. For some inexplicable reason, sunteam_paul is amused by the title song of this game. Personally, I can't listen to it more than once or twice a year!
Wallaby (HuCard) is a 5-player game that I own, but I haven't played yet. I'm not sure if this game is accessible, or if it is any fun, but goddam I hope it is. If anyone can explain why rabbits are the "jockeys" who ride in the the marsupial pouch, well, I'd be incredibly grateful. Wallaby is yet another game that you should just get because it is cheap and the front coverart (on the manual) is worth the price of admission. I'll be honest: I would love a huge, full color poster of the Wallaby cover art. Yes, I'm serious, lest you think I'm joking. Plus, if the coverart is any clue, it appears you can upgrade your wallabee with ROCKET PACKS during the races, so what's not to love?
Personally, I think "wallabee" (alternate spelling, and my preferred spelling) would have been the perfect title for this game. That said, I am more than happy with "wallaby".
If I were working with Frozen Neutopia or MindRec on a game, I would spend all my energy pushing for a wallabee + rabbit jockey character to be included in a new title. For example, we've all seen the pretty awesome screenshots of the the MindRec run-n-gun that is in development (PC Gunjin). Well, apparently they weren't enamored with any of my creative input (2 selectable characters, male, female, are fully clothed + gear in stage one. As you progress in the game, however, increasing amounts of his/her gear and clothing is ripped off... during the boss fights! Scattered throughout the stages, you'll find an occasional new pair of shoes, shorts, skirts, helmets, body armor, wool vests, sun visors, sunglasses, etc. By acquiring this clothing, not only can you customize your appearance, but it helps you during the upcoming boss fight -- clothing cancels out the initial "cheap shot" attack by the boss. Needless to say, by the time you reach the last stage...), but I still think they should have wallabee + rabbit jockey as an unlockable character in PC Gunjin. Great jumping ability and the skill to use two weapons simultaneously would be its unique characteristics.
OK, what was the topic of this thread again?

Here's a few more multiplayer games: Metamor Jupiter, Shanghai III, Break In, Motteke Tamago (great fun), Color Wars, the TV Sports titles (and a plethora of other sports games), and the various quiz titles (obviously worthless if you don't understand Japanese - nearly as useless even if you do).

It's obviously so awesome that listening to it has blown the awesomeness fuse in your brain causing you to only recognise things that are up to the level of fantastic.

Does anybody here have Faceball? Is it a multiple-multiplayer, or is it just two player capable? Either way, it looks like fun to me (albeit limited fun).

I don't have it, but I played turbo_sage's copy at the MGC on four player mode and it's pretty damn cool actually. It's slow, but simplistic fun!

It's only 2-player, but Don Doko Don is a good alternative if you're getting bored of Parasol Stars. That high school dodgeball import hucard isn't too bad, I forget how many players are allowed.
No one talks about it much, but I actually like World Sports Competition.

Faceball has a variety of options for four players, including battle and "racing" modes, with or without any number of sims or computer-controlled goons. The only downfall of Faceball, imo, is the complete lack of power-ups.

Oh sweet, I wasn't aware of a racing mode!
EDIT: OH and another AWESOME four player game is that one River City Ransom game where all of your characters have to race through stages while overcoming platforms and beating up other players along the way! This was another one of turbo_sage's games that I played at the MGC and even though I only played it once, it was super rad!

The racing mode is not like a driving game--the controls still handle like a FPS. The difference is that rather than simply killing each other, players run around the maze collecting little, baby blob creatures and deposit them into a goal. The blobs trail behind you until deposited, during which time other players can steal the blobs you've collected. Whoever deposits the most blobs before the time runs out wins.
