Hi, All!

I've just gotten my first PC engine (core grafx) and this thread with its mini reviews along with the pc engine bible (and ebay) have really helped guide me on what games im going to purchase, thanks

(btw its taken me 3 days to fully get through this thread, including refernceing with different sites, finding gameplay footage on youtube etc)

Since you have a Japanese CoreGrafx I'll include the Japanese names in parentheses if different from the US title. These are based on my own opinion of "must have" cartridge games. Keep in mind US carts won't work on your Japanese system. I'm sure others will chime in with their own recommendations:

Air Zonk (PC Denjin)
Aero Blasters
Alien Crush
Devil's Crush (Devil Crash)
Batman
Dungeon Explorer **
The Legendary Axe
Legendary Axe II (Ankoko Densetsu)
Coryoon
Magical Chase
Wonderboy in Monster Land (Bikkuriman World) **
Wonderboy/Dragon's Curse (Adventure Island) **
Bomberman '94
Space Harrier
Gunhed
Final Soldier
Motoroader II
Ninja Spirit
Parasol Stars (Bubble Bobble III: Parasol Stars)
Parodius
Bonk series (PC Genjin 1 thru 3)
Salamander
Street Fighter II Champion Edition
Sinistron (Violent Soldier)
Splatterhouse

Also, these fall into the "would be nice" category:

Be Ball
Dead Moon
Samurai Ghost (Genpei Toumaden 2 / Kannoni)
Outrun
Paranoia
Terra Cresta II

** These games contain a more-than-average amount of in-game Japanese text. They should still be playable/winnable but you will not be able to enjoy the storyline unless you can read Japanese.

Also worth noting is that while Bomberman '94 is the best entry in the Bomberman series, Bomberman '93 has better music. '93 might be worth picking up down the road but if you have to choose one, go with '94. It has better gameplay and level design. The first Bomberman (Bomberman '92? ) should be avoided entirely unless it's given to you and/or you've played every other game available and you are really bored. The game drags on for 64 long tedious levels that are all very similar and you are treated to a killer soundtrack that consists of an entire 2 (TWO!!) whole songs that switch off each level.

Thanks, my list has just grown, I really want to try out Street Fighter 2, Legendary Axe (and 2) ooooh and gunhed, saw some very impressive gameplay that kinda made my jaw drop on youtube, along with the 3 Soldier games.

Is Batman any good, i've got batman returns for the lynx and i personally think its aweful.

Parasol Stars looks good, if it can pull even a little bit of the charm and addictiveness the good ol'SMS version of bubble bobble can i'd be happy (is it me or was there an actual bubble bobble 2 that featured bub and bob? hmmm)

Im staying away from heavy japanese text for now.

Yeah i know about the cartridge region malarky, i've heard it doesnt count for CDs does that include all types? like could i play an american CD game on a japanese system, ie if i were to get a Super CDROM2 could i play american CD games on it?

Gunhed is widely regarded as a prequel to the "other" 3 Soldier games. Personally, I consider them all to be a part of the same series. Gunhed is the best and Final Soldier is a close second although you probably can't go wrong with any of the entries. Be sure to pick up Star Parodia (Fantasy Star Soldier) when you get a CD-ROM^2.

I've never seen or played Batman Returns for the Lynx so I can't compare. The Turbo version of Batman takes a "new" approach for the franchise with the game being played from an overhead perspective. Certainly something different if you are used to the sidescrollers, and the music is absolutely killer. I always turn up the volume when I play this one. The graphics are very nice in-game and it features cutscenes between stages that are quite beautiful. Far and away my favorite rendition of Batman, but those who are used to and loyal to the sidescrollers may not enjoy it as much. I still think it's a must-own for the music and cutscenes alone.

There was a pseudo-sequel on the NES called "Bubble Bobble part 2" that featured Bub and Bob as dragons. I don't think that version appeared on any other platform but I could be wrong. The "real" Bubble Bobble 2, titled "Rainbow Islands" appeared on many platforms including the Turbo (as a CD game). Parasol Stars is Bubble Bobble 3. Both Rainbow Islands and Parasol Stars feature Bub and Bob (same characters) in their (true) human form.

Too bad because the three games I listed that have a bit of Japanese text really are must-owns. Dungeon Explorer is in my top 3 favorite Turbo games of all time. It might be worth it to spend a few bucks on a US TurboGrafx just to be able to play some of the translated titles.

Yes. While CDs are "localized" for one region or another there is no lockout so you can play all American CDs on a Japanese console.

you might want to consider making a new thread for all this stuff instead of hijacking runinruder's long running review thread.

EDIT: Check out my thread here http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=3538.0 for various folks' top 10 lists. You might get some more ideas.

Hey thanks  :D

I was looking at Bravoman and i read runins little mini review of it, i personally like cheesy rubbish platfomers and the fact that bravoman says 'BRAVO' all the time kinda fits that bill, is it worth investing time in?

No problem, welcome aboard!

I like Bravoman myself and everyone knows me because I absolutely love cheesy games and movies to death. I was a bit surprised to see that runin was turned off by Bravoman since he appreciates other fine cheesy classics (like Legion). What I really like most about Bravoman are the fun and weird physics! Stretchable attacks, orbit jumps with weird gravity, and how you can constantly kick while in the air. The graphics are pretty dirty and the music is nothing special (the sound effects are though!) and the game is ridiculously long for it's type. Overall, it's a decent playable game.

I personally like Bravoman, too.

It's not a must-own by any means. And the graphics really aren't all that bad. In fact, the underwater levels are kind of cool. I find the game is actually pretty fun to play but it gets tough after you clear 10 levels or so.

Haha one step ahead of you, i bookmarked your site yesterday

I really cant wait to try out some of the games people rant and rave about (the ones that dont cost a small fortune of course)

Very good site, i love how you have little miscellaneous details like how big the games are and their retail prices etc.

Thanks a lot mate !!! Let me know if you see anything weird while browsing the site, English isn't my native language and I've been working really hard to iron out the overall content...
I'm not sure if it is an 'after-Wii' thingy, but more and more players are now looking to buy a PC Engine system. This is awesome :)

Actually it was my urge to have every handheld that drove me to the PC engine (the GT) I'd heard that the wii was going to have turbo grafx games on its download service but thats it (i dont own a wii nor do i intend to for quite some time)

The only thing the wii has driven me to is to not actually buy one.

I'll tell you if i see anything out of place on your site, awesome as it is of course.

Its HERE!!

Its so small, its like tiny but it suprisingly has some weight to it, the consoles a little mucky but im going to give it a clean later.

It came with Genpei Tomaden which looks really cool on my screen (well the big sprite part does anyway) and i've got Gunhed coming in the post, its got the tennokoe bank 2 attachment aswell though i havent figured out how it works yet (i'll have to get some new batteries for it first)

Im just completely exstatic!!!

Genpei Toumaden is the worst PCE game I have ever played.

I haven't played them all, so there's a small chance there is a worse game out there. But probably not.

C'mon now, Genpei is somewhat playable. :) I still think Jack Nickalus is the worst Turbo game out there.

I haven't played Jack Nickalus, so it's possible.

But I generally like video golf games so I'd probably enjoy it.

Tablet, a great HuCard game that wasn't on the first list in this thread that I've been having a lot of fun with is Image Fight.

It's a vertical shooter, and it's pretty difficult. A very cool thing about the game is that you can get up to 3 gun-pods surrounding your ship... The pods come in two flavors (red or blue) the red ones will point in the opposite direction of your movement, setting this game apart from the other vertical shooters.

The soldier series is great too... I've really had a lot of fun with this system in general. I've found it's pretty hard to go wrong.

GunHed is great, but the second stage is too long, too easy.

Bomberman 1 is fun!  But, the sequels improved upon everything, so Bomberman 1 is probably for Bomberman-fanatics who can't get enough.

GunHed. Awesome.

I always loved the first level song in the first TG16 Bomberman a lot. You also gotta love the battle mode with ONE stage, good old fashioned!

The two whole songs that make up Bomberman 1's soundtrack aren't bad. No, not at all. But after hearing them 32 times each upon completion of the game, I find myself wishing they'd gone the extra mile to compose just a few more tracks.

And there is absolutely nothing to love about the battle mode in Bomberman 1, except maybe finishing the battle and getting to turn the game off. I looked up "bland" in the dictionary once and it had a picture of Bomberman's battle stage.
