OK, this is a really dumb question, but I hardly see any Western-developed games for Neo·Geo. Was this because Western developers couldn't develop a good game to save their lives and thus failed SNK's quality control, or is it just that SNK wouldn't let any Western developers have developer kits? :-s
This is something I've always wondered, but never thought to ask...
-
It was most likely due to the fact most developers had their own custom hardware already for the games they were designing. You will also notice there was not alot of support from Japanese companies either other then a few things from Data East,Taito,Visco, and Sunsoft.
-
haha, I never thought about that :-k
-
Wow, you're right, that's a good point there! Thanks! :)
-
Very interesting question, I'm not even sure if I ever even thought about that. Are there any Western made games for it period?
-
Well for one thing American console and arcade games in general were pretty much thought of as jokes up until the last 5-7 years or so, which would have included most of the Geo's life. If some hack at Aklaim or Activison or EA was getting his ass kicked kicked in the $50 game market by Nintendo, Sega, Square, Konami, Enix, etc then trying to sell $250 games wouldn't be a very good idea in general.
I mean, how many western developed PCE/Turbo games are there?

Don't forget the early arcade days when America was king ;) .
-
I'd love to see Krusty's Fun House or Bart vs The World by Flying Edge/Acclaim on the Neo Geo. Nobody can deny that Acclaim rocked the hizzouse. They were the BEST EVAR! I think there were probably a dozen or so US-programmed Turbo games.

That sums it up.

This game is not on the NeoGeo. It was for the Jaguar,Snes, and Genesis. It was indeed produced by some crappy people at Leland Interactive. Double Dragon on the NeoGeo was developed and produced by Technos Japan.

Krusty's Fun House was an awesome game. I actually kinda like Bart vs The World too, but Bart's Nightmare was better.

Well, that is a bigger list that I could think of, but still when you consider the PCE/TG-16s total library is hundreds of games, and that many of the ones you mentioned aren't any good, it just proves my point. I mean, Nightmare Creatures is enough of a reason for American's to leave the game business forever...and its loads better than Darkwing Duck!
I've played good non-Japanese console games before for sure, like Earthworm Jim, Uniracers, etc, but they are certainly the exception, not the rule.
Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure Earthworm Jim is the best American game I've ever played.
-
Wasn't the Turbo version of JB Harold Murder Club programmed in Japan? I know they have more JB Harold games over there for various systems.

Please seek out: Unreal Tournament, Jazz Jackrabbit 2, Deus Ex, Diablo, Starcraft, Fallout, Crash Team Racing, and much more...
Actually just the first 3 rock my world the hardest, but the others are great too.

I really hate FPS...like...a lot. I played CTR and...well, it was better than other cash-in kart games like Rockman Battle and Chase, or that Bomberman game where they race on those dino/roo things, but it was forgettable x10. It seems kind of weird that someone would actually mention it.
Starcraft is nice. I also liked Warcraft II, and III.
My argument that American games suck was based on the console perspective, but I knew someone would bring up computer games. Personally, I don't care for them, but the "western" developers do rule that market, which isn't exactly a surprise since all the Japanese Windows games I've seen are either Y's remakes, doujin shooters, or hentai. The Windows market is pretty damn dead these days from what I've seen thanks to...FPS re-hash, mostly, and also WoW. There was a time when computer games were something very special, full of true innovation, and the consoles had all the re-hash. That situation has totally reversed itself.

You said 'quality control'... hahahahah... you just reminded me of two gems on the Neo...
'Ninja Masters' and 'Mutation Nation'.. some proof that Neo quality control was pretty
lax.
-
American companies definitely had no chance in the market with the Neo Geo. Maybe Midway could have done something neat with it. Still, these would have to be arcade type games since there are no AES exclusive home titles ever. I wish Technos and Data East made some more games with the Neo Geo.
Speaking of companies like Acclaim/LJN, eishhhh. In the NES days they were pretty decent. Then the 16bit and 32bit days they went to complete crap with ridiculously impossible challenge levels and had the same exact gameplay styles even mimicking MK controls in some games. Sure there were the Mortal Kombat games that were decent, but there were also those crap movie and comic superheros games. Let us look back: 16bit - Time Cop, Batman Forever, Demolition Man, many others. 32bit - Batman Forever Arcade, Fantastic Four, Ironman XO Man of War, and some others as well. Bad memories of rentals I have regretted.

I quite like Ninja Masters. Most people would cite Legend of Success Joe as a bad Neo Geo game.
I don't know if there was much quality control needed for Neo Geo just due to the nature of the market. While there are a few lame Geo games, more or less the ratio is fantastic. Much better than...probably any system ever. Same goes for the Neo Geo Pocket. Almost every game on the NGP is at least playable, if not amazing as hell. Only the Pachinko titles and Dive Alert are worthless.
-
Ninja Masters and Mutation Nation both are very nice Neo carts. Esp Ninja Masters, and it actually tends to be one of the more popular non-franchise fighters.
-
Mutation Nation rocks.

Isn't that the preferred facial expression of all the finer blow-up dolls?
-
Yea Ranagard is for those people that like junk like Twin Goddesses or dirty CG graphics. I am still surprised Ranagard had enough of a following to get a port to the Saturn.

You are confusing western originals with Japan-developed PCE ports.

Nope, I know that most of those were ported by Japanese people. But they're still non-japanese games designed by gaijins.
The point being made was that Japan makes all the best games, which I'm not arguing against. It just made me realize how many non-japanese Turbo/PCE games there really are, which is neat.
But I don't think that anyone here would consider Hudson Arcade Card ports of Mortal Kombat and Primal Rage to be japanese games or Aklaim and Activision making straight ports of classic Zelda and Mario games to be 'western' games.
-

LOL ANIME NERD! J/K
I should apologize, I didn't mean to start any gaming racism threads here, I just thought that it was kind of odd that as the second largest market for Neo·Geo games (Japan being the first) we didn't actually develop any.

Oh yeah, Shinoken. Thats much worse that LoSJ is. It's not just horrible play, its horrible to look at also. Horrible.
