I'd like to start reading game reviews now that I have a system. Where are the best places to get entertaining and/or informative TG-16/PCE reviews? I know a number of you run sites that would fit the bill, so feel free to do a little self-promotion :)
-
In no particular order:
The PC Engine Software Bible
(http://pcenginebible.roarvgm.com/)Video Game Den (http://www.vgden.com/)
Universo PC Engine (http://www.pcengine.com.br/)
Turbo2k (http://www.turbo2k.net/)
PC Engine Catalog Project (http://www.pcecp.com/) (mini reviews)
We mustn't forget runinruder's scrumtrulescent 'My useless thoughts on a few PCE games (http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=2047.0)' thread.
-
Turbo2k is gone and has been for a while. Unless the URL changed and I don't know about it.
Odonadon, where are you?

Odonadon got a new job and can't read the forums from work and slowly seems to be vanishing into distant memory :(

You are partially right :) My last two jobs I couldn't get to the forums (if you noticed I've been pretty quiet since about Feb, not that I was loud to begin with). I'm just an idiot and forgot to renew the damn domain (reminder e-mails were going to a non-existent e-mail address).

Here's another review site, focusing exclusively on shooters for the console:

You can always find an interesting take on TG-16 games here: [urlm=http://www.sega-16.com/]sega-16[/url]
I actually like the site, even if they prefer the inferior Sega-CD Dungeon Explorer to the mighty TurboChip :) .

Damn Blast ProcessingTM added an extra 'm' and f'd up your link, so I fixed it for all the lazy folks.

MmmMy friggin' "m" key has been giving me problems for months. It's friggin' annoying. Godammmmmit.

Time to get a new keyboard  I had the same problem about a month ago, so I bought a tarantula

haha, no, I use this tarantula (http://www.razerzone.com/images/tarantula_LRG12.jpg)

In this house, we only use keyboards made before the mid-90's, preferably 80's. The one I am using is a Packard Bell (don't let the name scare you!) that is pretty clicky and has a nice black metal plate on the bottom. My oldest brother has the king of all keyboards though which is a Tandy (we used to have the same keyboard as kids) which is all metal casing, big, heavy, and click as all hell, and dim lights actually on each lock keys. It's a real pleasure to use 8) .
-
Hey Keranu, you're making me want to find my old Gateway2000 AnyKey and start using it again. It's a nice and hefty board (though no springy mechanical keys), and it's programmability and eight-way arrow keys kicked much ass back in the day.
-
I'm telling 'ya man, you gotta stick with the old keyboards. 8) I can't stand these new ass millenium keyboards that are ultra silent and feel like cheap crap.
-
I better go find one of those cool tandy keyboards then
-
I could buy a new keyboard, but I'm working on a notebook :).
I love clicky keys, but, honestly, they are too loud for many situations (i.e. sharing the room with someone else).
Still, if sound pollution isn't an issue, I'll take a stiff, clicky keyboard over the flacid keyboards any day of the week.
-
My notebook's keyboard comes off and connects wireless :) To bad its an old ass Toshiba satellite
-

I'll have to get my bro to take pics of it sometime, though it's much more satisfying when actually using it. Oh my god, typing on it is a nerd orgasim.

Haha, I used to have a Toshiba Satellite back in like 1996! :D

Ug. I can't even go to that Video Game Den site. It keeps popping up a window asking for name and password identification. There is no way to register and no way to make the window go away, it just keeps popping back up. I had to quit my browser. A big THUMBS DOWN to that site! Also, that Turbo2K site doesn't seem to exist. I clicked the link and nothing NEC related is there.
-
Hmmm... seems VGDen is indeed currently screwed. I'm sure he'll get it sorted soon.

Laurent is having problems with his webhost at the moment. He's aware of the login window problem.
He told me that he's contacted them about it.
I sent him a POV for Blazing Lazers so hopefully he'll get that posted up there once he gets the technical issues sorted out.
As of this morning vgden is down completely but it should be up again soon.

Joe, vgden is back up and running, it seems. http://www.vgden.com/index.htm

Cool! I must have been to that site before... I recognize the layout.

My retarded domain provider has been ignoring my request to renew my domain for the past week and a half. If nothing happens soon I will be very upset. Needless to say Turbo2k will be back... eventually....

How did you find out about the Turbo? Just curious.

I grew up with gaming since the com64/2600 so I was always aware of the turbografx 16 but it was always something pretty that was too expensive so we stuck with our NES and then later Genesis so I only got to play a tg16 occasionally at the display stands at toys r us or at a friends house. I vividly remember the old turbo ads that would be in comic books, especially the ones for Splatterhouse that would show rick and jennifer going to the mansion, rick being knocked out and awakening with the mask on, jennifer being kidnapped, etc. It was just never a system I was able to get my hands on. I guess I found out about the duo late in high school when my rich friend got one for Rondo of Blood but by that point I was pretty deep into the psx and wasnt really focused on the older games. Recently however I have become disallusioned to the current gen systems and their demands on my time (final fantasy XII, etc) so I basically just use them for arcade compilations (taito legends 2, capcom classics, etc) and fighting games (there are a lot of great neo geo compilations on import). I have not seen anything in terms of the next gen consoles that would make me want to purchase one.
So instead I have re-discovered the games of my past and the many that I missed out on for whatever reason. I pulled out my old Genesis a while ago and for Christmas I picked up a duo with 15 games as well as one of those fc twins that play nintendo and super nintendo cartridges which I am very impressed with.
The only Turbo games I had really played before or where familiar with are Splatterhouse, Devil Crush, and Alien Crush. Devil and Alien were a part of the lot I won with my Duo so they have been a treat to play. I had been playing Dragon's Fury for the Genesis in place of Devil's Crush but now that I have played both side by side I believe Crush to be superior (Dragon Fury doesnt even take up the whole screen).
My favorite new game so far is Lords of Thunder. I don't think I have ever played a shooter quite this fun. Gates of Thunder and Blazing Lazers are fun too, but can't compare. I am trying to get better at Dungeon Explorer but I'm finding it very hard so far. Fantasy Zone I'm not a fan of, JJ & Jeff is just, uh...weird and I dont like the controls, Super Adventure Island is a lot of fun, Bonk's Revenge I am liking more than Adventure but both feel like they are missing some fun factor, and I already had Pac Land on Namco museum vol. 4 and it still seems pretty bad. Moto Roader seemed promising at first but then I started playing and right now it seems awful (although I keep going back to it for some reason). Dragon Spirit looks better than the nes version but I've never been a fan of shooters where you have to shoot at stuff on the ground with a separate shot.
I'm looking to get my hands on some of the first person rpg's and some of the action games. I just won a big lot of games the other day so hopefully those will be good. I also ordered some cables that I'm hoping will work as extension cords since the duo cord is so short. I would also love to play Rondo of Blood but I can't spend that much on one game and I'm not hip to the whole torrent thing.
Anyway, that's me.
-
If you got a normal Duo then I expect that soon we will be seeing you posting in the tech section asking why your audio doesn't work.

I just posted a review for Riot Zone on the Net:

Pretty decent review, there.
Except... Grammar and spell check are necessities.

Looks solid. For once a honest review stating its a good game with obvious flaws. Usually everyone either hyperboles it or states its crap.

Shucks :( . Oh well, nice to see another new person here! :)
-
Nice review! I pretty much agree with all you said.
-
What will happen to the audio? And why wouldn't it have happened already? And what other option is there besides a "normal duo" ?
-
Duo
Duo-R
Duo-RX
The audio capacitors in the first-generation Duos leak and stop producing sound over time. It's not a terribly difficult fix (just replace the caps or have someone who can solder do it for you), but it's best to be aware of what you're getting. All American Duos fall into this category; the -R and -RX were released in Japan only.
From what I understand the Duo-RX is most resistant to this type of decay due to a revised mainboard layout, although I've never owned an RX myself.

R and RX innards are basically identical. But even within just the DuoR units there is some variability. The boards are the same but some components are eliminated in some systems and brands/types of caps and pots are varied. Someday I'll post the pics I've been collecting of the variations...
-
Well thanks for telling me that before I plopped down the money. Seems like it would be just as much a pain to have to rig the duo rx to play american hu cards as it would be to fix some caps
Whats up with this auction? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150201012411&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching
Is the bidding up so high because half of the games come with the cardboard boxes? Isn't cadash the only rare game in that lot?
-
I would imagine that price is high due to the cardboard boxes. Cadash isn't worth more than $35 boxed.
-
Yeah, that's pretty high, even with a handful of shitty condition boxes.
