"GET READY!!"
Please prepare for the upcoming Space Harrier high score challenge. Post high scores (and screenshots) and the difficulty level they were achieved with. Please also mention whether or not you used auto-fire.
Space Harrier (Easy) Space Harrier (Normal) Space Harrier (Hard)
28,359,660 - Nat
20,628,970 - Joe Redifer
SPACE HARRIER (SMS)
26,030,420 - Joe Redifer
SPACE HARRIER 3D (SMS)
6,865,000 - Nat
The above TG-16 score was a game-winning high score on Hard mode. My wife has the digital camera today so I couldn't get a pic up right away, but I snapped one with the good ol' fashioned 35mm. As soon as I get the roll developed I'll throw up the money shot. Yes, I used auto-fire in the interest of racking up as many points as possible. I also used the TurboStick because using a pad to play Space Harrier is sacrilege.
You can change difficulty settings by scoring over 4,000,000, dying, and entering "MD" as the initials on the high score list. The only difference between difficulty settings is the speed at which the enemy projectiles close in on you. You know those red robot sentries and how fast their missles track you? Imagine that x 10.

Bump, high score added.

Haha, I can't wait for your 35mm photo!

Here is my TurboGrafx-16 Space Harrier high score:

I hate this game because if I reset it when I make a mistake, the MODE selection defaults and I cannot select hard mode. It's completely lame that I must play through it a bit in order to select the difficulty in the first place!
Here is my high score on the Sega Master System version:
26,030,420

Yuji Naka is in 2nd place. Yes, he programmed this version.

Really? That's odd. I would think it wouldn't do that since resetting isn't a "hard" reset.

Completely agreed.
First post updated. Good job, Joe! C'mon people, don't be shy.
EDIT: Scores from other SH games are allowed too, like Space Harrier II and SH 3D but I will create seperate charts for them.

If I had a copy, I'd pick up your gauntlet, but I don't, so I won't. Where's the 35mm money shot (my condolences to your wife on that).

I haven't developed it yet. Since you reminded me, I'll drop it off at the 1 hour place next door when I get home.

I played a bit of Space Harrier 3D for the SMS today. This is the Space Harrier game I've spent the least amount of time with, by a loooooong shot. I've updated the first post with today's high score. I suck terribly at this game, but that probably has something to do with the fact that it runs at about 2 FPS. I don't have any kind of 3D glasses so I turn the 3D effect off when I play. Unfortunately, doing this doesn't help the framerate at all.
The framerate is a major problem with Space Harrier 3D. The game is barely playable. You suffer a lot of cheap deaths. It's too bad, because the graphics are very very good for a SMS game with a nice variety in levels and landscapes.
BTW, I never make it far past level 4 or 5. I don't play the game much.

Here is my mind blowing score from the ZX Spectrum version of Space Harrier. I even got to the end of level 2!
