Title: what a dork!!
Post by: Tatsujin on October 13, 2007, 05:50:32 AM

i hate those mongos who just play our old and so beloved games on a wii or emu the first time and think they can judge them fairly, e.g  straight flushing them down the toilet. those arseholes wheren't there at that time, who goddamn they think they are?

I have to admit, I really wasn't impressed with Vigilante when I played it for the first time a few months ago. The thing is that this game came out in 1989, yet the year before, the ZX Spectrum computer saw the release of "Target Renegade" that, despite the limited colour, was a far better game. For the PC Engine to be trumped by the good ol' Speccy is not good.

Vigilante is a port of an arcade game. It's a damn good port, too, but it's still a port.

Personally, despite it's shortcomings, I have a blast playing through Vigilante. I love the music. It's got that late '80s/early '90s arcade sound.

Vigilante is a port of the arcade game. The good ol' Speccy was trumping a mighty arcade, not the PC Engine.

Ys Book I & II, Dungeon Explorer, Monster Lair and PC Genjin also came out in 1989. R-Type, Legendary Axe and Alien Crush were released in 1988.

Just because a mediocre or poor title gets released for one console, it doesn't mean that another platform exercises superiority over it simply because it saw at least one quality game release.

The NES doesn't trump the Genesis because it has Sword of Sodan while the NES has SMB3.

Exactly. It's a really good port of the game too.

I had just watched that review of Vigilante yesterday. Streets of Rage is a sweet game though.  :)

I wasn't meaning that the Spectrum is "better", just that one particular game that came out a few months earlier that was very similar in style was better on it. It was to make the point that for a computer released in 1982 to have a better beat em up at the time does not say much for Vigilante. But of course, as everyone else is screaming in my ear :) Vigilante is a port, so it's hardly the PC Engine's fault. I haven't come across a bad port on the PC Engine yet.  I'm sure though given time, I will get to play Golden Axe

Word... I love the game.  It's the only game you'll find that features BLACK Skinheads.  Intense.

You damn insolent fool, the ZX Spectrum contains power NO MERE MORTAL can contain, let alone comprehend!

Vigilante is cool.

and of course it is!! good ol' 80s arcade mashing. the grafx and colors where awesome back then, and it produces a great ambiance. ok, the BGM might have been better on that. but still decent.
that game was definitely one of the better hucards released back then.

Vigilante rocks the house when you have friends over.  Nothing like watching your friends get whipped in the face by a chain wielding tough and screaming with laughter as they get pwned.

So, I haven't checked, but you say they removed the video. Damn.

Vigilante is a port of an arcade game. It's a damn good port, too, but it's still a port.

I actually wasn't impressed with Vigilante back in the day. It was barely OK, as far as I was concerned.

Of course, I paid top dollar for it (it was one of the first games I got for TG-16) and I thought Blazing Lazers and even China Warrior were more fun and provided more bang for the buck. Vigilante was too easy and too short. At least China Warrior was more challenging (if not more annoying).

So, I had some fun with Vigilante, but I was under-impressed with it.

PRO TIP: To increase your enjoyment, do not use the turbo switches in Vigilante or China Warrior.

Fast forward to Keranu joining the forums. His enthusiasm for the game was infectious, so I started playing Vigilante again. Well, it wasn't so bad after all. It was fun, especially if you try to use a variety of different moves / weapons. The gripping storyline! The character designs. The IREM billboards in the last level.

I, too, love the tunes in Vigilante. Great stuff. I really dig the "whirling" sound of the nunchakus (sp?), too.

Plus, I no longer felt cheated of my $$$.

Plus, when I bought the PCE version, I realized that the cover art was a goddam brilliant work of art:

(I've praised this art in the past, on at least two occasions, so I won't repeat myself now. Suffice it to say, I love this cover art.)

Hmm I think I remember talking about Vigilante back then now. By the way, I still like the American cover! As I pointed out before, I think American covers like Vigilante do a good job portraying the surrondings of the game. Of course, I do prefer the Japanese cover.

yeah..in this case, the JPN cover doesn't really appear that well, but mostly due to the reason it tries to appear like a typical american cover

that's the general problem of our "halo & co" games player generation!

Even those douchebags at Gamespot crapped on the TG16 games. When they first reviewed Splatterhouse they
gave it a good score. Now that we have all these flashy games they give it a 4.7 on the Wii... wtf?? it's still the same game you liked back then.
