Title: Bonk RPG
Post by: KingDrool on July 30, 2004, 02:23:24 AM
I know this was in development back in the day but never got released.  However, does anyone know if there's any playable demo of it or if somebody ever did a homebrew version?

Just curious.  Thanks.

Hi jlued686,

Thanks for the question - the Bonk RPG was reported to have been only 20% done before it was scrapped, and thus no playable demos or test versions were made.  For more info, check out this page:

Thanks Aaron.  It would be cool if somebody picked up this project or developed their own version of it, eh?

Bonk needs to have a comeback.  Let's hope the GCN and PS2 remakes are a sign of what's to come.

This is some super necropost, but seriously is there a demo or anything out there or at the very least some partial code someone could perhaps pick up where it left off?

If there is, I've never seen it, nor heard of anyone that's hoarding it.

I've been told it more like 45% complete, and was completely playable. Grafxs, sound, text and other detail were the things that were missing out of the last (beta) release. I've been told be two different sources it was place on a pc engine demo disc but was not assessable through the menu or a code. But was just a chunk of data place on the disc. If it real, someone would have to have the disc and dig through the date to find it, most likely not going to happen :(

This is all rumored of course.

I've always thought something looked off about those screenshots. Most of them look like photos of a TV screen or monitor, but they look like mocks.

The crappy-ass 8-bit RPG screenshots/maps are from the real thing (game demo that got cancelled.)

The beautiful cartoony battle/dialogue shots with large bone frames are mock-up artist's concepts -- NOT the real game.

The game looks pretty fun, but I am still not sure if it'd ever have worked out that great.  It's Bonk.  He needs to be an action game

I don't know. Hudson makes some entertaining RPGs.

What a load...

I heard a rumor that it was canceled because Enix sued them for copyright infringement soon before completion. There are 10,000 complete copies, but since they were unsellable they will be buried with Toshiyuki Takahashi.

There you go. Now everyone has just heard a rumor. Have fun with it.

I would have loved a game based on the original mockups, but I wasn't looking forward to the game that actually began development.

The same woman that gave me a copy of "bonk: brink of extinction" is one of the people that told me that. See how she gave me a game that was never released I personally would believe her. Now of course this is my word, just adding my two cents. But then again only about half of the information on bonk is correct on the internet.

Wait...how did she "give" you a copy of Bonk: BOE? On a disc? Say what? And considering how the team who made Bonk RPG had nothing to do with Bonk: BOE, I'd call your information suspect...at best.

Yeah, you know, the Bonk BoE demo ROM that he was going to make available for free on his website until we criticized it and he took it down because we don't share his passion but now he's going to message Aaron and put his website and the demo on a torrent and have a link to it on PCEFX sometime within a year when he drinks because that's when he works on it.  That ROM.

The memo:

You were looking in the wrong place. What dose 'Bonk: BOE' and 'Bonk RPG' have in common? The publisher maybe, don't look at the developer.

Right here, Dingleberry:

The same woman that gave me a copy of "bonk: brink of extinction" is one of the people that told me that. See how she gave me a game that was never released I personally would believe her. Now of course this is my word, just adding my two cents. But then again only about half of the information on bonk is correct on the internet.

So again I ask: what does Bonk RPG have to do with Bonk: BoE? Why would some random chick with a "copy" of BoE know jack or shit about Bonk RPG? And it'd be awesome if you could offer up some proof of your mysteriously gifted "copy" of BoE. Sorry for being a dick, but the whole thing smells like BS.

I think Bonk RPG would work just fine, as long as it was in the right hands.  I was worried about Super Mario RPG too, but that turned out great.  It just needs to be done in the correct way, as is the case with an RPG, or game for that matter.

You could prove us all wrong by simply posting any sort of proof. That's all I'm saying.

It looked like it could've been fun. But while Mario RPG had a unique battle system, making it a bit more action oriented, Bonk RPG (judging by the screens, at least) looked to be standard turn-based. Could've been cool, though.

I can understand some of your perspective, but stolen photos? You seem to have lost me on that one. Just cause someone takes the time to scan something in, it makes it their property? I would give credit to someone for their time for doing such an act. But it is not their property. I tried to contacted 'sunteam_paul' with no reply. I would say more then half the time I get not reply. But then again you seem to be replying to me just fine though. So me being an 'attention-whore' as you put it. I seem to have won, just by getting my reply knowing it works or getting attention. :)

You don't seem to have tried very hard, considering you can PM me on this or many other forums, send a message via facebook or twitter, or email me directly. What did you do, put a message in a bottle and chuck it in the sea?

Also, you did ask about the scan in the thread after I pointed it out, to which I said it was fine and also gave you full permission to use anything else you wanted, with credit.  :?

I'm very sorry I miscalculated, I did not take in count for the minor meteor shower that hit the moon, the gravitational pull was a little different that evening, which in turn throw off the normal oceanic waves, you may want to look southeast filthy-six and 13/6 paces down the beach, the bottle should be there. It's red with a big pink castus on it!

I tried emailing you (paul@pcengine.co.uk) without a reply. I asked you a few questions;

like where did you get the image? I know you wrote what magazine it came from.
Why is there a big square block that reads, "part of image missing"?
Were you the first person to scan this?
And why is my image I have one pixel bigger both height and weight, I know it sounds lame but someone edit it at some point.

Scan from PC Engine Fan I think, could be Gekkan or Marukatsu.

Quote

Answer covers both: A friend and I wrote an article about the PC Engine for a UK gaming mag called Game Zone. We cut out a load of screenshots from Japanese magazines to send with the article. Unfortunately, the RPCGenjin bit was on the back of a page we cut into. So when I scanned it there was a hunk missing that I had to block over in photoshop.

PMing links is not the same as posting them publicly.  Duh.

And I'm sure mediafire doesn't allow it to.

Who cares?  It's no more illegal than your plan to share it via torrent, so find some other excuse.

And why would I need to upload it.

I thought 'sharing was caring'?  I guess you were lying about that too.

If you just ignore me, I wouldn't need to shut the hell up, your reply tells me you care about me. I love you too

Lots of good information in this interview from 2008 (http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Interview:Shouichi_Yoshikawa). But relevant to Bonk RPG is this little tidbit:

Quote
GDRI: Did you or A.I have any involvement with an unreleased Bonk/PC Genjin RPG for the PC Engine or with any of the GB Genjin games?
SY: あははは。。。。「RPG原人」のことですか。。。あの作品は、私も現場にいる頃、ハドソンから試供されたロムでプレイしましたが、。。。。。うううーん、あれは、世に出なくて大正解だったと思います。
Ahahaha...RPG Genjin, you say? I was there for that. A sample ROM had come from Hudson that I played, but...No, I think the correct answer is that it never existed.

So maybe there's one out there somewhere?

Other points of interest (Bonk related)...

Quote
GDRI: What happened with Ultra Genjin [N64]?
Ultra Genjin was being planned during the game industry's transition from 2D to 3D games. I studied the practical aspects of this quite a bit, but I think that nobody really knew what should be done with games at the time. As a result of trial and error, we were able to adapt the design for Ultra Genjin to Bomberman Hero.

Quote
GDRI: Of the companies you mentioned, would you say A.I was the developer of PC Genjin?
This is a difficult question. As PC Genjin 3 (which I was the planner and supervisor on) was a success, from that point on, A.I was entrusted with development of the series. Perhaps the list below would be better.
PC Genjin 1 (Hudson + Red Company + Atlus + A.I)
PC Genjin 2 (Hudson + Red Company + ???)
PC Genjin 3 (Hudson + Red Company + A.I)
Super Genjin 1 (Hudson + Red Company + A.I + Amble)
Super Genjin 2 (Hudson + Red Company + A.I + Amble)

Well, that's intriguing. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

(1) Has anyone followed up on this to find corroborating evidence?
(2) Has anyone here played Bomberman Hero? Can we extrapolate/speculate on what components of the game may have originated from "Ultra Genjin"?

For folks who wanted to see a better scan of Bonk IV RPG found in EGM's 1993 Video Game Buyer's Guide (.pdf) (http://archives.tg-16.com/EGM/EGM_BG_1993.pdf). I think it is the cleanest scan you'll find on the internets. I had shared the raw file with bonkzonk.com years ago, but I don't know if it is available there.

Esteban: I've played Bomberman Hero, but it was quite a while ago. I do know that it's much more of a platform game in a pseudo-3D environment than standard Bomberman titles, complete with jumping. It's available on Virtual Console, so I was hoping to download it in the next few days. Here's a video:

Damn...I wish someone at Hudson Japan would unearth that Bonk RPG prototype.

Yeah Bomberman Hero is not really like a traditional Bomberman Game, but more platformy. free range movement. The comments of an Ultra Genjin (which I hadnt heard about) becoming Bomberman Hero makes sense to me considering how far from the usual bomberman gameplay it is. Haven;t played it in a while, but would be interesting to do a quick playthrough to see if anything left over from Ultra Genjin made it into the final, if theres any screens of UG?

At one point at least one mag talked about an attempt to do a 3D Bonk game. It was back during the 32-bit generation and I believe pre-N64. I remember my impression from what I read. 3D platformers were still pretty crude and developers were still figuring out how to do traditional genres in 3D. If the story was legit (probably EGM... probably Quarterman), then Ultra Genjin was probably just Bonk 3D. Since the biggest hurdle would have been trying to incorporate the spinning, it would make sense that they'd come to a point where they said "screw it! Let's just make it a Bomberman game". If things had gone smoother, then it likely would have come out sooner as Bonk 3D on Saturn. Bomberman was the dumping ground for Hudson's experiments back then (Bomberman Fight, Bomberman Wars, etc).

Ahhh, thanks for all of the info, comrades.

That actually fills in a lot of questions I had (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

6-Megs? That would make it the biggest game released in the USA for the system right?

Magical Chase is only a 4mb cart, but Bonk 3 is indeed 8mb (the only US one I think).

From the looks of it the ROM seems to be just a mock up. I doubt it would even be playable.

I deffinitely recall talk of a Bonk 3D game for PS1.  So, I don't know if it was the same as Ultra Genjin or not.
