Title: load time = crazy
Post by: MurderDate on October 22, 2007, 03:34:34 AM
I just watched this clip of It Came From the Desert for the Duo.. (Keep in mind I haven't gotten my Duo yet.. it's days away..) good god - is the load time this long for all of the games !???
no wonder people say you can't play Bonk off of a CD !@
this is pretty sweet though:

red games usualy don't have any remarkable loading time. see gate of thunder. it just plays as from a cart! very impressive though!!

RED is a developer. They developed games like the Bonk series, Air Zonk, Gate of Thunder, etc.

Also, all of the bonk games are available on CD. :P Bonks I&II are on the 3 (4)-in-One cd, and Bonk III was released on SCD with minimal changes. :P
The load times are generally fine. Some of the Arcade Card disks do have some hiccups during loading that can stretch it out, but generally load times are very tolerable... No where near NeoGeo-CD levels. :P

THE TWISTED TALES OF SPIKE MCFANG FOR SNES
As well as PC Engine. Its called Makai Prince Dorabocchan though, its a side scroller, and the graphics aren't anywhere near as nice. Kind of like the difference between Kikikaikai on PCE versus SFC.
Interesting the PCE game is from Naxat. How did Red become involved? The Hudson connection, obviously, but that's an odd thing to cross over.

I've only heard of a TurboGrafx game being in a thrift store only once in the history of the entire world.
Wait....sarcasm right? :P
Nope. I speak the truth. Granted I am not including used game stores... only thrift stores.

Red's capable of alot more graphically, then what they did with Makai Prince Dorabochan though, it's a cool game, bummer they didn't work harder on the graphics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twisted_Tales_of_Spike_McFang < that's al I could find on the situation, Naxat still is inolved (their logo appears from under the top hat) but they're just a publisher now.
EDIT: According to this screen shot (http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Twisted_Tales_of_Spike_McFang_SNES_ScreenShot1.jpg), Red has owned the copyright to the franchise since 1990. This could also imply that they were the developers of the TG-16 game.

I checked it out on my Duo tonight and clocked the following times:
11 seconds from BIOS screen until Sea of Love started playing. 16 seconds from BIOS screen until title screen appeared. 5 seconds from title screen to "Day 1" screen. 10 seconds from "Day 1" screen to first video sequence, and about the same for any other video sequence.
All in all, the loading times seem to be similar to other early releases.

I remember the load times for ICFTD being a bit on the slow side, but we were already use to load times. On the topic of load times, later CD games (late '94-95) used their own CD read routines, instead of the system card bios, that increases the transfer rate and decreasing load times.

that's interesting..
Can't wait for my DUO to get here.. Soon as the mailman drops it on my front step I'll be happy. I've poked the seller a couple times & have got no response. I may have to drive to Ohio and pick it up myself.
Part of me thinks the long-ish load times are kinda nice.. nostalgia.. stoney too!! I got nothing better to do.. ;)

Long-ish compared to what? I've had friends laugh about a ten or fifteen second load time on my Duo, yet they don't bat an eye at the much longer load times of current and last gen. consoles.
