Title: Which Transformer was your favorite?
Post by: runinruder on November 02, 2007, 02:29:42 AM
I've gotta go with Cyclonus. He was the most intelligent and sinister of the Decepticons, a brilliant and fearless warrior. He repeatedly kicked the crap out of that chump, Ultra Magnus. His ship form was the coolest ship form in anything, ever. Perhaps his only downfall was that he had so much integrity that he always remained loyal to that maniac, Galvatron. We all know he should've beaten the shit out of Galvatron and led the Decepticons himself; they would've defeated the Autobots without question. Most of the Transformers merchandise that I had as a little kid is now just a distant memory, but I still own a Cyclonus figure.
If I had to choose a favorite Autobot, I'd pick Red Alert. I loved that episode where he went crazy and teamed up with Starscream before beating him down at the end. It's too bad he didn't get more screen time.
As far as comics go (I read the first few way back in the day), Shockwave was a complete badass, tossing Megatron around like a ragdoll and capturing the severed head of Optimus Prime. Man, those early Transformers comics ruled.

Yeah Shockwave was awesome. Shockwave and Soundwave were completely loyal, but you knew they were somehow smarter than Megatron.
I didn't really get into the 2nd Generation characters, though I did watch all the post-movie cartoons when they came out as a kid. Rodimus Prime just didn't cut it. [-X
So Decepticons:
Shockwave Soundwave Starscream (annoying but funny)
AutoBots:
Optimus Prime (c'mon. obvious but true) Ultra Magnus (Just one of the coolest toys ever) Jet Fire (toy) or Sky Fire (cartoon) - the toy was just a Robotech rip off, which is what was so cool about it. :D Perceptor was cool too. Grimlock
I know I'm forgetting a bunch here but whatever. I'm sure other people will bring up the ones I forgot. :)

I liked Cyclonus, the new music, and some of the parts where they further explored the history of the Transformers in the post-movie episodes. But I agree on Rodimus.
I think my least-favorite episodes were the earliest ones.

Ultra Magnus (Just one of the coolest toys ever)
I remember buying that toy before knowing who the hell Magnus was. Wasn't it like a white Optimus Prime with a head and a bunch of red and blue pieces to stick on it?
I really hated Magnus in the movie. "I CAN'T DEAL WITH THAT NOW!" The scene where the Sweeps annihilate him is AWESOME. Wreck-Gar and crew should've left him in pieces.

That's the one. :) It was just cool to have a white Optimus Prime. hehe

Yeah, the really handled the new leadership wrong in that movie. Which is really the only thing I didn't like about that movie. Hot Rod was a good character and it would have been nice to just keep him as that character. They went out of their way to make Magnus seem incompetent. :( The fact is that no one could have measured up to Optimus so we would have been disappointed regardless.

Yeah, I liked seeing the Cybertron versions of the Transformers (were there ever any toy versions of these?). Bumblebee was particularly cool, as was Wheeljack. But the series was at its peak in the 3rd season or around there anyways.

Starscream was the most interesting character to me, the dynamic between him and Megatron was always awesome and hilarious. Too many good characters though to pick a favorite, I'll say that Blaster was easily my least favorite.

Tie between the Constructicons,Combaticons,StarScream,Megatron,Warpath,Tracks,Metroplex, and Optimus Prime, even if he did forget how to fly.
Id have given extra kudos to any of them if they woulda accidentally stepped on Chip Chase and killed him,but oh well...

Haha I am the exact same. I never spent time watching the show, but Bumblebee just sorta stuck with me.
As Ernie Banks' Retirement Pants (and maybe ceti_alpha?) will agree with me, BattleTech is the best! I'll take a Daishi Widowmaker and the Line Backers over any other mech series!

I'm sure there's more. And yes, they did make some pre-Earth mode Transformer toys, they were part of the Titanium line. There's atleast 2 more coming out, Prowl & Grimlock.

They are from War Within, which is considered pre earth G1. They are as close as you'll get, to the few that were shown in the show. There is a prototype of Bumblebee floating around, not sure if it'll ever get released. It might end up being released in the next line of Classics along with Arcee, Cosmos, & some others that I don't recall at the moment.
Here's a sketch of Bumblebee, I'll look some more for the prototype http://seibertron.com/images/comic/bumblebee_2.jpg
Here's a proto of War Within Shockwave, not too different then his cartoon model http://usuarios.lycos.es/toxman/shockwave_proto.jpg http://www.seibertron.com/events/fullsize.php?event_id=70&size=1&image=150
Here we go, lot's of pics, though, it looks like most, if not all, are not transformed properly #-o http://www.seibertron.com/events/gallery.php?event_id=70&size=0&start=125

This is a general question about Transformers. In the cartoon the Autobots were mainly cars and couldn't fly, while the Decepticons were mainly planes and could fly. Just wondering if this was the same on Cybertron. Seems like it was from just the few moments on Cybertron in the first episode. Wheeljack and Bumblebee seemed to be land locked.

Actually the Autobots could fly in the first 3 part episode....then this was ignored for the rest of the series..lol

Actually the Autobots could fly in the first 3 part episode....then this was ignored for the rest of the series..lol
I think there was a sudden change in continuity when Optimus Prime had to borrow Sideswipe's rocket pack :-k
The official continuity, after those couple of episodes where they could fly, is that, general rule, Autobots can never fly, aside from ones who end up taking flying alt modes, like Skyfire & Powerglide. The Dinobots, can fly. They were built differently then the other Autobots, so they don't have that limitation. All Decepticons can fly, without question.
However, that's going by race, rather then faction. The Autobots descended from the workerbots that the Quintessons created. While the Decepticons descended from the warriorbots, which could fly. Eventually, they got too smart, & there was an uprising, led mainly by the workers/scientists, though I suspect there may have been warriors involved as well. It seems like most warriorbots, were off the planet(aside from the Omega Sentials), as they usually were sold to warring nations for profit. So I'm not sure how that all works out, if the warriors did indeed fight with the workers, or if they came back to Cybertron at some point. It does seem like, atleast for awhile, the warriors were almost an unknown on the planet in general.
Anyways, my point here is, if an Autobot of race(as it's also established that when a spark comes online, they are born a worker or warrior), joins the Decepticon ranks, he can't fly, unless he has a flying alt mode, or a jet pack. And if a con of race joins the bots, he can fly without exception.
I'm guessing I would be an authority on Transformer lore here, since it's one of my main hobbies, & I'm probably the TF nut on these boards, (though, if you go to the All Spark, there's people with alot more knowledge about G1), so, any questions, ask away.

Very true. Cartoons do not require nor expect any intelligence from their viewers. If you have any intelligence, you don't watch cartoons. Instead, you watch Law & Order and Larry King.

They flew, because the fact that Autobots didn't normally fly, either wasn't established as part of continuity yet, or the writers just plain screwed up. As the show progressed, they gradually implemented various parts of Transformer lore, but, there were also more screwup's. There are 2 episodes, with different origins of the Constructicons! One has them, as villians, building Megatron, basically as their secret weapon or something to that effect. However, in another episode, it was Megatron himself(& his Robosmasher) that made the Constructicons turn bad. #-o

Meh. I hate that crap. I've never watched Law & Order in my entire life, and thanks to the crappy skit at my graduation, I never will.
As for Larry King, you remember that episode in Yu Yu Hakusho where (in the dub) that Australian-sounding dude pulls out two daggers and Yusuke and him have a knife-edge deatchmatch where they basically just pummel each other while trying to keep one foot on the knife?
Yeah, that episode ruled. But Larry King sucks, and he's majorly annoying. I hate him.

Speaking of the Contructicons, would Devastator be considered a sentient individual comprised of the personalities of the 6 Contructicons? For example, if Bonecrusher tried to keep a juicy bit of gossip all to himself and then merged with the others to form Devastator, would Devastator know this gossip and be able to ponder on its significance? And when he de-merged would the other Contrsucticons also be aware of this gossip? Weird question, yes, but I always thought that all of the personalities of the individual robots merged into one personality but who also has his own thoughts, feelings and desires.

I'm not 100% sure. I know, that when any robots merge into gestalt form, the gestalt's mind is a combination of all the robots, but they are usually not as bright. The exception is Computron, who was given extremely high intelligence when combined, thanks to Grimlock when he got smart, but then gave Computron his intelligence. I think it's a possibility that a robot in the gestalt form, could find out about stuff, from being merged, but, that's a specific question I've never heard anyone ask.
Here's something on Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers_technology After reading that, I'm starting to think that they don't know eachother's thoughts, but internally, talk to eachother basically, agreeing on how they want to react to whatever situation they are in.

Armada would've been a million times better without the kids. Otherwise, atleast for me, it's unwatchable. I own it, but, I just can't get myself to watch it. The last several episodes, dealing with Unicron were the best, but, still, not a very good show. All in all, of the Armada/Energon/Cybertron trilogy, IIRC, I seemed to enjoy Energon the most. I do know it had the least amount of kids, which is always a plus in my book! It only had 1 kid, & he wasn't real annoying like the others. I wish they'd put out Robots in Disguis on DVD. I know it had a kid, & it was kind of goofy, but, looking back, for some reason it seems like I really enjoyed it, atleast in comparison to the Armadaverse anyways.
And yeah, since I was a kid, I have always wished they would make a combiner of the Dinobots. I always thought of the Predacons as kind of their Nememis's(if that's a word), & always wanted to see them go head to head with Predaking! 3 of the Dinobots atleast, will be in the new show. I know I'm not keen on the designs, but, they're growing on me, & the show, might end up being well written, which is the most important thing.
As for favorite Starscream, deffinitly War Within Starscream, only picture I could find online at the moment(http://www.bwtf.com/galaxyforce/starscream/comicvm.jpg)
BTW, here's War Within Grimlock, they're making a toy of this, the Dinobots are all a bunch of crazy rompem stompem tanks in this series (http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/c/c6/GrimlockWarWithin2.jpg) (http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/a/ac/GrimlockWarWithin1.jpg)
Also, this is a great Megatron to pick up, fully transformable, & posable! (http://www.tmpanime.com/images/medium/mp05megs_MED.jpg)
I do prefer Cybetron Starscream, over Titanium, I think the Cybertron just looks better, all in all (http://www.bwtf.com/galaxyforce/starscream/vm1.jpg) (http://www.bwtf.com/galaxyforce/starscream/rm9.jpg)
Here's another of Starscream..

Is there any continuity between each series, or is each one basically a "reboot" of the Transformers storyline. I know the Michael Bay movie didn't have much to do with anything and the designs sucked. Megatron as a plane? Who comes up with this shit?
Title: Re: Which Transformer was your favorite?
Post by: ParanoiaDragon on November 07, 2007, 01:31:23 PM
Alot of the different series, are considered alternate universes. Like the movie, it's an alternate universe from everything else. When it comes to G1(the original series), the series that are connected to the cartoon, are Beast Wars, Beast Machines, & War Within. However, there are some things, mainly in War Within, that don't totally fit continuitywise with the original cartoon, mainly because I think Marvel owns the old cartoons & comics, so, there's some stuff they just can't do anymore. Oh, back on Beast Wars, the new comics are also included with G1, which also go into other characters & their original Cybertronian vehicle modes(their only Beasts, because of the planet they are on, the only modes that would work well to blend in, is animals).
Then Robots in Disguise is it's own series(though some have tried to fit it in with Armada, but, I don't think that works. Armada, Energon, & Cybertron are all one universe.
There's other series, like Evolutions, which so far, has only been one series of 6 comics, where, it's a "what if the Autobots & Decepticons awoke during the industrial revolution, instead of the 1980's". There's also some Transformers vs. GI Joe, & GI Joe vs. Transformers, which are all pretty cool, but are again, seperate universes. Basically, like super heroes, they have a multiverse. I'd really like to see some kind of continuation of G1's universe in animated fashion......maybe they could right the wrongs that was Beast Machines(overall, it's kind of a cool series, but, Cybertron became techno-organic at the end On Megs, yeah, he's great, I have him, but, Hasbro apparently won't be bringing him over, so, I had to import. They did just release Masterpiece Starscream however, as a Walmart exclusive, I'm still looking for him. Here's some pics (http://powet.tv/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/mpstarscream.jpg) (http://powet.tv/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/mpstarscream2.jpg) Oh, the Dinobots. The ones that are tanks, are from War Within, which as I stated before, happens before G1, when they still have their Cybertronian modes. And to keep their group the same, they are called the Dynobots. Kinda cheesy, but, oh well. Oh, Swoop however is not a tank, but some kind of futuristic ship.
Here's a fanmade 3D rendering of the Dynobots alt modes(Here's the page I got these from http://10fingersdesigns.com/3d/autobots25.htm) and robot modes (http://10fingersdesigns.com/3d/series63/dynobots10.jpg) (http://10fingersdesigns.com/3d/series63/dynobots03.jpg)

I think there actually was a Transformers GI episode that linked GI Joe and Transformers. The bad guy in that episode was an "unnamed" terrorist that sounded like Starscream/Cobra Commander (same voice actor) and wore a glass helmet/mask. I believe at the end of the episode this unnamed terrorist yells out "Cooooobrrraaaaa!!!". hehe. So they didn't come right out and say it was him, but come on. For this I consider GI Joe and Transformers the same universe.

Huh? I have not crossed over into the TF world.
More Real Transformers vs Michael Bay:
In the cartoon (and toy) Bonecrusher is a bulldozer who transforms into a robot and along with 5 other construction vehicles that also transform into their own individual robots and merge together into a giant super robot called Devastator. There is no way Devastator could be running around on his own independently of Bonecrusher (who is actually Devastator's left arm).

I don't know. His name was Snake and you could see his blue uniform sticking out from underneath his long trench coat. And he yells/coughs Cobra at the end. I'm sure it was just a joking nod by the writers, but it does establish Cobra in that universe. IMHO. hehe 8)

Yeah, I have some, if not all, of that miniseries. Crossovers are good fun no matter how you look at it.

The ones that are tanks, are from War Within, which as I stated before, happens before G1, when they still have their Cybertronian modes.
The Dinobots were built on Earth, homey.
Their new bodies were built on earth, there sparks, according to War Within, they existed on Cybertron. But, that's new cannon, it's up to you if you want to except if they existed before or not.
As for that Transformers episode with the GI Joe crossover, that was the one, where Cobra Commander in diguise as "Snake" makes some technology, where they transfer the minds of humans, into 4 Autobots, & the Autobots minds into the bodies of the humans. At the end, when all is said & done, "Snake" jumps in the air & yells "COBRAAAA!"
Oh, & I remember hearing there was an episode in GI Joe with Bumblebee in it.

I just watched Transformers: The Movie for about the billionth time (you can watch the theatrical version in your browser right here (http://www.bedroommedia.com/watch.php?vid=4750&part=34939)... you get reel-change cue marks, no warping of the sound in the beginning of the movie as Unicron is digesting, you get the CrAzY cussin' that turned many children into career criminals, it's all here) and the movie just seems so... abridged. It goes straight from Unicron being defeated to Gayimus Prime pronouncing an end to everything. That's just one example where it seems like tons of scenes are missing, but that's the way it was made. Animation flaws also abound. I can't believe it took them 2 years to make that. What was it, a team of 5 guys drawing the thing? That might make sense, especially when you consider that Japanese anime runs at 12 frames per second and often less. Transformers: The Movie is no exception. Galvatron is teh suk. Megatron is better. The movie becomes boring the second Starscream dies.

Agreed. The whole Junkion thing is really just made for kids. The movie lost its mojo somewhere in there. I have a VHS copy of it as well as a downloaded version. I might have to pick up the DVD of it. I'm just afraid of buying anymore DVDs now that HD/BR (most likely HD in my opinion) is out now.

Meh, I love the movie. I love the Junkions. I even love Rodimus Prime, nowhere near as much as Optimus though. Rodimus Prime, shows a new leader, who's unsure of his abilities, I always found that interesting, rather then, the Matrix just making him perfect. Sure, it makes him stronger, but, no always wiser, he still has to seek help within the Matrix, not to mention, real life leadership, to learn what he's capable of.

Doesn't Rodimus shit the bed near the end of the GI series? The episode where they resurrect Optimus because of the "zombie" Transformers.

I agree that the movie slipped after Galvatron killed Starscream. The first half had plenty of cool parts: the "Instruments of Destruction" murders, Prime versus Megatron, Megatron meeting Unicron and becoming Galvatron, Starscream's coronation and death, etc. The second half spent too much time on Ultra Magnus fleeing/whining, and the Weird Al/junkyard parts were horrible. Some of the post-Starscream scenes were cool though, like the Quintesson trials and Magnus getting blown apart.
The movie is an outright Star Wars rip-off and is pretty boring to watch straight through since it's basically just one battle after another. But I love the script; there's a classic quote to be heard like every five seconds.

It does. I could live without stuff like "Hunger" and "Dare to Be Stupid," but "Instruments of Destruction" kicks ass, and I like all of the instrumental stuff. And while it would be unbearably cheesy in any other context, "The Touch" works well in this film. :)

Nothing's gonna stand in our way... NOT TONIGHT!
Kup and Hot Rod are gonna have some romantic sex, and they'll be damned if anything stands in their way.
I wonder how Devastator decides to split back up? If you were walking around, would you want to give up your consciousness, your hopes and dreams to split of into 6 individual parts? Does Devastator just say "Fuk dis shit" and split? Does it hurt, like having limbs and his torso severed all simultaneously? Ouch. Predaking was cool, but there really needed to be a 6th or maybe even 7th Predacon because his torso was way to damn small.

Poor Devastator. And you know Megatron doesn't have any Decepticons with Psychology as their special ability.
Anyway, I was just on Youtube and came across some stuff on the "relationship" between Bumblebee and Arcee. And I came across this pretty cheesy video someone made. But some of the artwork is cool.

There was one episode pre-movie, where the Autobots somehow capture Devastator, & keep him in his combined form, & while he's like that, he's serving them. But, I think generally, any robot, wants to be an individual, merging is just a way to really kick the crap out of stuff, so, it's fun, but, still, they want individuality.
As for the music, I love the movies music, Dare to be stupid & all! Most of the music on there, I wasn't into, until after I saw the movie. I wish they didn't movie soundtracks in the manner nowadays. It seems like in most movies, you maybe hear 1 or 2 songs from the soundtrack :P
And I was thinking, I do love Megs the most, but, for some reason, I do enjoy Galvatron as well, even though he's nuts. Actually, there's an episode, where Cyclonus ends up taking Galvatron to a planet for psychiatric help. It's a great episode.

But Devastator is his own individual with his own mind, ambitions and goals just like anyone else. He enjoys hanging out with friends, football games, robo-tea, you name it. How would you feel if you were made up of 6 different a$$holes? If you split up then each of your limbs would contain only part of your personality and mind and function independently.

Yeah, I saw it in the theater as well. I was really surprised when Spike said that. I remember that day, I went to Wendy's with my mom & cousin, & we got kid's meals, & in the kid's meals, they had Go-bots toys(not Machine Robo ones, just ones made for Wendy's), mine was a purple jet. I brought it with me to the movie(blasphemy!!). And, I'm not ashamed to say it, I cried when Optimus died dammit!

I remember seeing it in the theater many times. I saw it on the day of release. I remember pissing my mom off because I demanded to see the 5:xx show instead of the 7:xx show because I just couldn't wait. I remember everyone laughing when Spike said "Aww shit what are we gonna do now?!" I also remember everyone cheering when Blaster ejected his cassettes to fight with Soundwave's cassettes. I must have seen that movie in the theater at least 10 times (I once saw it twice in a row at the same theater). I also remember the videocassette costing about $80, so it was rental-only!

haha. Yeah, on it's release date I'm pretty sure I went to see it 2 or 3 times. hehe. God knows how many times I went to see it subsequent days. I was obsessed.

Yeah, that rocks. A toy that looks as cool as the cartoon... who woulda thought? I wonder how the world would have reacted if the original Hasbro toys were that cool. I know I would have gone apeshit with glee! The top of it looks like it was burned with a match, though. I'd prefer it to look non-burned and without the fan-nipples, though.

Haha. Yeah, some of those early transformers were terrible. Ironhide and Ratchet looked terrible. They weren't much better than the Go-Bots...maybe even worse. It just sucked that Ironhide looked pretty cool in the cartoon, but at the same time the toy looked ridiculous. But it is neat how Hasbro started to figure out how to actually make Transformers that looked cool in both forms (sometimes 3 or 4 forms).
But even Cy-kill had to admit inferiority to the Transformers....namely one Megatron.

Yeah, the US version has varying scorch marks on them. They all seem to be a little different though, as when I was looking at the 18 Starscreams they had there, their paintjobs were all slightly different on the scorching, so, I picked the one I liked the best. Apparently, Takara is releasing a US version of Starscream(the Japanese, only got a blue Starscream, that matches the color of what his vehicle mode would be in real life), & it apparently has alot less/none scorch marks.
Oh, also, he comes with a stand, so you can have him hanging in mid air above it, & in both vehicle & robot modes. I'm guessing he's about a foot tall, but I haven't measured him.

Nearly a foot tall? Man, I wish toys were that cool when I was younger. But at least we got Megatron which transformed into a realistic gun instead of some fluorescent nut job thing which would be likely today. If Megatron doesn't make cops shoot kids, then it's not the proper Megatron!
Also, if Japan's Starscream is blue, then Japan doesn't have Starscream. They have Thundercracker.

Nope it was Screamer....that was just the paint job Takara went with...they are getting the corrected paint scheme version soon.

Yeah, they wanted to have him be in "real life" colors. Thundercracker is a different shade of blue compared to what they used. They do however have a Skywarp repaint. Normally I'd jump all over that, but, I gotta stop buying repaints, especially $50+ ones! Actually, probably more then that, since I'd have to import it.
Oh, & for anybody who cares(probably none of you do), the new show, starts December 26th at 8 PM on Cartoon Network. However, because of the wierd artstyle they used, I doubt anyone here, other then me, will give it a chance. Personally, the first picture I saw, was many months ago, & was the Optimus for the show, & I HATED IT! However, after seeing various clips, & other characters, not to mention that some of the old G1 voice actors are in the show(Corey Burton, voice of Shockwave, among others, is returning, as Shockwave....as well as being the new Megs, also Susuan Blu is going to be Arcee again), I think it might be a decent show, atleast, worth checking out. I'll know in a month if it's decent, but, then again, I ended up loving Beast Wars, & I'm sure most here hate that show.

I checked out Toys 'R Us earlier this week and all they had was Thundercracker and a couple other Transformers (well they had tons of Transformers, but all from different generations). Thundercracker was around $14.99 or something.

You won't find him at Toys R Us, he's a Walmart exclusive :P And, he does have some die cast metal in him, though, it doesn't seem like there's as much as there is in Masterpiece Optimus Prime. 50 bucks ain't bad for a Masterpiece figure, I forget what I paid for Optimus, for Megs, since they can't release him in the States, was around 100 bucks.

I'll have to take a trip up to Walmart then. hehe. It's just cool to be able to get Transformers that actually look like they did on the cartoon. Did they do an Ironhide? I saw some rumour on a forum but that's about it. The Voyager Jetfire is cool, but I'd like to get my hands on the original. It had three forms: plane, robot and guardian modes like Robotech/Battletech.

You got it! He's already packaged in robot mode, so, no problems there. Though, it seems like most online stores, will add an orange plug to the barrel anyways(mine did), however, needle nose pliers solves that problem....atleast, it did for me
As for more Masterpiece figures, as of now, there are only 5 I can think of, 3 original molds(Prime, Megs, & Starscream), & 2 repaints(white Optimus Prime as Ultra Magnus & black Starscream as Skywarp). I think there might've been talk of a Masterpiece Grimlock. I haven't heard anything about Ironhide. Fankly, I would love a Masterpiece of every G1 bot, but, wow, that would be expensive. As it is, I was collecting all the re-releases of G1, & those were pretty expensive to keep up with. I can only imagine several hundred $50 toys to collect
