Title: There is no reason to buy a PS3.
Post by: Kitsunexus on November 07, 2007, 08:48:03 AM
DYNASTY WARRIORS GUNDAM IS OUT FOR 360!!!!

Yes, this was a pointless thread. But to me IT MEANS THE WORLD!

Pointless as the thread may be, I thought that Dynsasty Warriors Gundam looked pretty cool... but I have never been into gundam per se.

If it was like a "Dynasty Warriors Super Robot Wars" that let you play as Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z in the USA) I would be interested.

He isn't one of the playable characters in Dynasty Warriors Gundam, is he?

There isn't much reason to get a (PS3) at this point any ways.

Even with there so called budget model that has 40gig hd.

There's not much for it either on titles as well untile,MGS4 hit's next year.

Keep, thinking i'll save up for one but there changes in each model is crazy not to mention there prices for it  :P

Yeah, that pretty much was *the* PS3 game, for me at least.

Still waiting to see where the next "true" Super Robot Wars game will end up. By "true", I mean not a port of an older game that lost money the first time (like XO), and not on a handheld. Not that I didn't absolutely f*cking LOVE SRW W, I just miss playing SRW games on consoles.

The only other interesting thing on PS3 was the Top Gear test track being included in GT5, and that is a pretty small thing since GT got its ass handed to it ages ago by Sega GT, the Sega GT2002, then Forza, and then Forza 2.

Gran Tourismo is king of all racing simulators. Sega is king of all arcade racers.
Title: Re: There is no reason to buy a PS3.
Post by: SignOfZeta on November 07, 2007, 02:00:50 PM
Yeah, whatever. GT just isn't that great. It started the whole GT clone craze (obviously) but it hasn't been the best at it since Sega GT on Dreamcast.

Sega, btw, isn't currently the king of anything other than shitty Sonic games.

I could go into huge detail as to why Forza completely destroys GT as a simulator, but if you were enough of a car nerd to understand the incredibly nerdy car shit I'd be going into, then you'd already feel the same way I do about Forza. I mean, if you really want to get into it, we could, but that's a lot of f*cking typing for me. I will say though that Kazunori Yamauchi didn't even have a drivers license while he was making GT1, and the game plays that way.

BTW, I don't own a PS3, or 360, and almost certainly never will, but I have played the shit out of all these games and I've come to the conclusion that Forza 1/2 is not just the first good piece of software to sport the Microsoft name, but is totally incredible in its own right.

All sega racers have that incredible arcade racing feel that we grew up with on the arcades. Thats why I name it the arcade racer king. I haven't played  Forza as I don't own any xboxes. The thing I like most about Gran Tourismo is that it has real cars and you can fix them up with real world upgrades. It really gives you a feel of what its like to be a racer, without spending all the cash, haha. AND it was the first video game to offer this experience. I doubt anything that came from micropenisoft could be that great, but I guess I'll have to take your word for it

Screw GT. Liscense tests suck.  I like my cars plus guns and sans wheels, ala Wipeout.

Do you have to be a martial artist to make a fighting game?

regardless, a Japanese not having a drivers licence is not a big deal - the test is super hard and the licence itself is super expensive.

Oh be serious. Street Fighter or Tekken have about as much to do with actual fighting as they do with white water rafting. GT actually sets out to be a driving simulator (says so right on the box), and does a really good job at it. It just isn't as good of a job as the Sega and MS games.

Yes, I know this. It would help if a game based on driving was written by guys that know how to drive though. I consider it essential, in fact. GT focuses too much on buying your victory in the form of parts, and not enough on the settings for those parts, or the driving skill needed to win with less money. This has something to do with the amount of track time the director had (none). Well, now he has a license, and a load of cars, but the basic vibe of the game hasn't changed. The Ultimate Shopping Simulator, more like.

XBox 360 is starting to look better and better... Hmmmmm...

Gran Tursimo series was a lot of fun. It struck a good balance of making it a (pseudo) simulation without making it so damn difficult so that an average Joe can't enjoy it.  I do agree that there's some truth to it being a "shopping simulator" though.  On the other extreme, I recall F355 - holy shit, that game is hard, but it's a solid, solid "sim".  I couldn't get in to it as easily as GT because of the difficulty curve (and no way you can do good times on the shitty standard analog pad).

I can't say much about Forza (or any post Dreamcast sims...), but it does look friggin great.

All that said, I can't imagine that real track driving is ANYTHING like video game driving.  It sure ain't for motorbikes -- that's why I never even bother playing bike sims, I know it'll be nowhere _near_ the real thing.

I'll play a good ol' game of excitebike, though!  :D

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of F355, but a wheel is required. Not just for good times, but just to stay on the track. Daytona is even harder to play on a standard pad, but thats due totally to bad programming. The DC's biggest flaw, IMO, is that you need to use some other controller for virtually everything other than RPGs and sports games do to the stock one being so super shitty.

Riding a bike is harder to adapt to a game because you ride a bike with your whole body. A car is controlled by just siting there and...well, using buttons and wheels, pretty much like a game.

I played a game for the original XBox, I think it was called Moto GP (not the Namco one on PS2), that did an OK job at being a bike sim. Riding a bike is pretty f*cking complex though, and I've never driven one at the limit, so I'm not qualified to comment.

It will not be a dead format. It might lose the battle for the popular movie format, but it will be around for data on the pc. Well, until someone comes out with something better

How is Blu Ray dead?  I thought the movies were outselling HD DVD by like 4 to 1 or something.  I hope it doesn't die, Netflix has a ton of blu ray movies and I like them a lot better than regular DVDs.  I don't know why anyone buys movies anyway, what a huge waste of money, renting is a billion times better unless you have kids or something who watch movies 1000 times.

seriously! If you rent regular dvds, you can easily copy them. If you have a good printer you can stomp a label on your copies and send them back while keeping the original for yourself

I don't pirate movies, I buy them. Mainly because sci-fi blockbusters, action movies, and crime flicks (pretty much the only genres I watch) are cheap at TA, and there's nothing better then coming home with a 44oz Dr. Pepper, a BIG cookie, and Escape From New York.

Those links are hardly conclusive, hell in the first one the guy didn't even know if it was HD-DVD, Blu Ray, or something that played them both.  The second one just says things are at a stalemate, not that blu-ray is "dead."  Personally I hope Blu-ray wins just because I'm tired of everyone thinking they're market analysts and that just because beta flopped that blu-ray will too, plus blu-ray discs have that awesome coating that prevents scratching.

The Standards will unify, I have no doubt. The players, I mean. Dual Standard Players.

Last night my friend bought a PS3. He didn't buy any games because there really aren't any, but we did watch the new Fifth Element BluRay on it (replaces the basically defective one from a few months ago). That was nice, but it might just as well been an HD-DVD since the quality is exactly the f*cking same on either format (ie: very good).

Setting up a PS3 for the first time is a huge pain the ass, btw. Terrible UI. Remember how with the PS2 you had to go into a menu and turn *on* the TOSLINK output...as if you would *ever* want the thing turned off? WTF? Dialog boxes that warn you that you are about to be disconnected from the network...even though you haven't actually connected yet. Crap like that.

I'm so glad I have a PC Engine or two...I really don't like new consoles...

The fate of the next generation of DVDs will rest not with Hollywood but with the adult film industry, as have all formats that came before it. From my understanding, only one of the very small number of facilities that are capable of producing Blu-Ray discs are even producing adult media on Blu-Ray. More adult films are available on HD-DVD. So there you have it...who's gonna win? Watch and learn.

Damn i didn't know "setting up a PS3" was that much of a hassle.

Most i've herd is it has some controller issue problems nothing more.

Kind of a shame though the,PS3 works while the 360 struggles to work  :P

The current gen is still not much of a concern to me at this point.

Same go's for bluray vs hd-dvd i'm just waiting to see who wins that.

I'm just satisfy with regular dvd as is.

I really don't care which one "wins" as I don't plan on watching them either much in the future since there aren't any future movies I'm looking forward to and for any older movies I'll just get them on LD or download.

Porn is not a great point, nobody knows the effect porn being primarily on HD-DVD is going to have on the format war since this isn't the f*cking 80s and things aren't going to happen like betamax vs VHS.

Porn, consisting of low-budget films despite the fact that the industry eclipses Hollywood, does not lend itself to HD very well.

Imagine being able to see all the little touchups, the little things they try to hide, the wrinkles, etc... That's why HD ruins porn.

I don't know about that. I think these new formats will remain premium for a few years before hitting the mainstream, a event which will be marked with the sub-$200 dual standard player. This will probably be...I'll guess mid to late 2009. During this period it seems to me that porn will probably stay with standard DVD until the HD formats are ubiquitous.

History doesn't always repeat itself. I think the two formats will be a boutique format for a while until they are as good as unified in the eyes of Wal-Mart shoppers. Virtually zero porn was ever released on Laserdisc during its 20+ years on the market. I think we'll see something like that only with a happier ending since a cheap Blu-Ray/HDDVD combo player is imminent, and fully backwards compatible with regular DVD.

The last 25 years of porn are basically VHS, MiniDV, Super8, etc quality and would have to be upscaled at 8x just to be HD anyway. Kind of pointless. Not only that, but hyper detail in porn is...its not needed. Not even wanted.

I agree with that last paragraph, there.  Most porns look worse than amateur home videos and are extremely difficult to watch much less get excited about.  When porn DVDs came out, a friend of mine bought one and they were trying to make use of every feature that DVD offered just to do it.  Multiple "angles" and stills and such.  It was awful.  Again, totally amateur.  Anyone with technical or creative skill will not be working in the porn industry, and that's why porn movies look like ass.

I hope that you're right, but it won't happen anytime soon.  LG and Samsung were to have already released dual format machines, but the licensing agreements wouldn't allow it; neither Sony nor Toshiba will permit their respective formats to be used with the competing technology.  Egos suck, eh?

The fate of the next generation of DVDs will rest not with Hollywood but with the adult film industry, as have all formats that came before it. Porn DVDs are such a minuscule part of the market that it's impossible for them to steer the format bus.  Don't believe the 'estimates' that AVN puts out (*giggle*) - They're a joke and not supported by the evidence.  All the major players state that web site subscriptions, video on demand, and pay per view account for the largest portion of their income streams, yet the sum of those three is still less than what AVN claims is sold on DVDs.

Yeah. Behind the Green Door was a long time ago...

To be fair though, the only good use of multi-angle I've seen was in the Ghostbusters DVD (with and without FX scenes) but even that was just OK. The new NIN HDDVD my friend bought has multi-angle...but we couldn't figure out how use it.

I'd think that multi-angle would be f*cking great for sports, especially auto racing, but I don't know if they ever did anything with that.
