If you wanna play a game that's AWESOME, that REALLY kicks ASS, then look no further! SNK's "Crystalis" for the NES. This is one of the best games they've ever made (and that's really saying something coming from a guy that's not into RPGs that much), plus it isn't even a Neo Geo game! The game has an interesting story about how the world is not completely destroyed, but really trashed, and civilization goes backwards! They abandon all the technology that helped the world progress and rely on stuff like magic. And this is an RPG that doesn't have any turn based combat, THANK GOD, because I HATE turn based combat. And instead it plays like The Legend of Zelda, only I actually think this is alot better in my opinion. It's a great game! One of SNK's best. Not just one of their best non-Neo Geo games, but also one of their best games period! Imagine if Crystalis had gotten ported to the Neo Geo Pocket Color!

I really loved Crystalis back when it was new. The puzzles were fantastic and there was so much more cool stuff to do in it than in similar old adventure games like the first Zelda. I've tried to replay it a couple times over the last decade, but it's kind of boring now. Some of the puzzles and concepts are still appealing, but a lot of it, like the cave parts, are just dull. Since I first beat it, I've played through a lot of action-RPGs that simply clobber it, especially the Duo's major players. Still, it's one of the very few NES games I've held on to, because of how sweet it was initially, and in the hopes that I'll eventually find it interesting enough to play through again.

I hate when people call games like zelda, neutopia, and crystalis RPGs. They're adventure games.
That said, it is indeed awesome.

Its a gem to be sure. I still have an NES copy, and will probably pick up the Gameboy Color port if I ever come across it.

I just call them action rpgs if any thing at all.
If they, were rpgs they would have a level system..and be turn based for wich they are not.
Still these days what defines a rpgs is loose these days.

I know what you mean. Though for Crystalis, I'd say it's an action-RPG as opposed to just adventure like Zelda (overhead versions). Action-RPG just means it has more RPG elements than adventure games... more RPG-ness!
Crystalis is awesome, though. I can still play it over again without tiring of it.

I throw the horns up for the Crystalis overworld music, especially this funky MOD version (http://modarchive.org/download.php/C/crysremx.it) and this OCRemix (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00734/).

Agreed 100%.

Easily one of the best NES games ever, although the ultra wimpy final boss was always a huge disappointment. The rest of the game is amazing though and was really way ahead of its time when it came out.
-
I loved, and still love, this one. It's one of my favorites too. It's a shame they never released a Neo Geo sequel, or any sequel, for that matter.
I thought Crystalis had a much more interesting plot and cast of characters than the original Zelda, though both are classics.

Yea another classic SNK title I own. Def a keeper.

mmm, SNK NES games...
Ikari warriors, Athena, Alpha mission, Crystalis... mmm. :D

One of my all time favorite NES games as well. I'm hoping to get the Famicom version some day (which is called God Slayer)

I keep thinking i'll get it for the famicom one day too.
Still i rather play it in english i know i'd be better off getting the,NES version and play it on my famicom with the use of the adaptor.

God Slayer is one of the coolest game names ever.

Here is the thing with the Gameboy Color version though.... The intro is nicer with more animations and more in depth story, but all the music was taken away from the game and completely redone by Nintendo. It is a damn shame, almost ruins the game's original experience. So beware of the Gameboy Color version, I still held on to my NES version since 1990.

I have wanted to play this game for years. But I have two questions:
1. Does it have battery back-up?
2. Sell it to me.
-
And I have two answers:
1. Yes.
2. No.

Ahh that sucks, I was interested in the Gameboy Color version when it was first announced. The music in Crystalis was something I really liked too.

Ahhh, I know they re-did the ending and some other story elements, but I didnt know about the music. I'll still pick it up, just to have in my tiny gameboy collection (its just a little stack of games, not so much a collection ). I still have an original for NES as well. Man, what a great system the NES is. Like that really needs saying :D.
-
The new music is f*cking terrible too, it did ruin the game for me. It sounds like they hired an amateur to do it- the music itself is really bad and the sound quality is equally horrible.
-
Yeah it is pretty bad what they did with the music. I still need to sit down and play through it to see the extras. Plus what sucks is that there is no 2nd controller warp trick like on the NES version, man that was a time saver since the dungeon maps can be a pain in the ass to navigate. I think I will break this game out on NES again today after I learn the rest of The Grudge from TOOL on my bass. I picked up Shatter Hand and Little Nemo: Dream Master for NES, fun games.
-
Little Nemo is so hard, I could never beat get past like level 4 I think on that one.
