Title: Games that have beaten you
Post by: runinruder on November 11, 2007, 02:00:26 AM
Okay, we all like to boast about our incredible gaming accomplishments, but this topic isn't about that stuff.  This topic is for fessing up.  Which PCE/Turbo games have you been unable to conquer?  Perhaps it was a particular level or boss or puzzle that tripped you up, or maybe the language barrier eventually proved insurmountable in an import.  Share your tales of woe here.

Note that these should be games that you actually put some effort into.  If you stopped playing Falcon or Burai after two minutes, it just means that you're sane, not that you were forced to wave the white flag.

Being a mega-talented no-life-having game-playing superstar, I haven't run into too many "unbeatables," but Monster Maker pulled the trick.  It was super easy until I found myself in a tower room with two staircases leading up.  Both led to dead-ends... and that was all she wrote.  I have some ideas that I'd like to try if I restart it, but it's not a very good game, so I'm in no hurry to return to it.

What's your story?

I got stuck at the same spot in Monster Maker when I first got it around 1995. I'm also tempted to give it another try, but there are still too many games I have yet to play at all.

Although I still love rpgs, there was a time when I still planned on playing through every last one of them. Burai was still decent enough for me, so I wasn't just playing it just for the sake of it. But after completing several of the character scenarios, I got stuck on one with a female character. I couldn't get out of the town she started in, even though I spoke to every one in town more than once. I'd really like to get to beat that game and then try the sequel.

One X-Mas years ago I got to pick two PC Engine games for X-Mas/birthday gifts. I picked Snatcher and Last Armageddon from the list available. At the last minute they said that they were sold out of Last Armageddon, but they had another cool RPG called Cyber City OEDO 808. I asked them if they were sure it was a real RPG like "such and such" titles and they swore it was. Sure enough it showed up as an unplayable digital comic adventure. Although I couldn't get much past the beginning, I didn't just give up ater two minutes. I spent hours talking to everyone, trying every command and exploring every nook and cranny of the area(s) available. For all I know, once you get into it it really is a traditional RPG. :P

At the moment, I can't think of any other Turbo/PCE games I'm still stumped on, but there are some big ones for other consoles.

Since I'm usually able to eventually beat all the games I start playing (without cheating), this is a hard one for me. Don't get me wrong-- there are still plenty of games I have left to finish that I've started, but I have game plans with nearly all of them.

I play games perhaps in a different way than many others-- I play long sessions, with short spurts of different games throughout. I have some form of ADHD so I generally can't play the same game for long hours on end. The exception is with RPGs, sometimes I will spend a couple hours at a time on these just because of the nature of the game. For me, a good gaming session is where I make a little progress in a lot of games. For non-RPG games I find it incredibly difficult to sit myself down with a single game and play the shit out of it until it's done, or even to focus on a single game for days on end until it's conquered. I lose focus after a while and have to play something else. Because of this, I have many games in progress that I've been working on for quite some time, but it's not because I'm stumped by them or anything as I have full confidence I'll be able to complete nearly 100% of them in time.

Having said all that, there is one Turbo game that has me truly befuddled, and I'm not so confident I will ever complete it. That game is R-Type. I can make it as far as Stage 6 on a good day, Stage 5 on a bad day and that's after owning and playing the game for a decade, plus. Those later levels require such pixel-perfect timing and memorization, you (as a player) are forced to play the same portions over, and over, and over again until the right path and actions are forever ingrained into your head. Because of my mild ADHD issues, this kind of game play isn't a recipe for success. After just a couple continues I usually have to turn the game off and play something else since I lose interest quickly. When that disinterest sets in during a gaming session, my game playing ability goes to shit as my mind wanders and my focus dissolves into thin air. Although I'm much better at keeping focus on things in general now compared to when I was a kid, I learned a long time ago the only real way to regain that focus while playing is to play something else.

Anyone who reads my postings here knows how much I love a challenging shooter, and in the end, I can usually best whatever you throw at me given some time (or quicker, even). I fear that in this case Irem may have actually pulled off what was previously thought impossible-- they have effectively "stuck it to me."

I got stuck in Ys IV back in the day. I was at the point were you needed to give the old lady 5 ingredients. I had 4, but couldn't find the last one. I knew there was a door behind her (I could see it with the mask on). I translated what the women had said with my Japanese books and some other towns people as well, but still couldn't figure it out. That was before walk throughs on the web. It wasn't until the English patch came out that I finally beat the game.

Yeah, Rtype's a bitch too. I made it to the last level once...

The last boss is Rayxanber III, I must have tried about 30 times and still couldn't beat that f*cker.

With out question it was rayxanber 2, i purchased this game back in 1991 and i could only get to the 4th level boss, i only got that far because i would dodge and pause.

One game I'd like to conquer is Cool Cool Jam for Neo Geo Pocket. I've gotten further than any other non-Japanese speaker, but I still haven't accomplished jack shit.

One game I *really* was pissed I couldn't pass is Mobile Suit Gundam Vol. 3: Ao Baoa Qu for Wonderswan. I blew right through the first two games, and about half way through the 3rd one, but right when Slegger dies I can't figure out how to kill the Big Zam. It sucks because I really really like this series.

I've started Manji Maru a few times and flaked out. Twice on PCE, then once on the GC remake, then once again on the PCE. I *will* clear it someday.

After failing to teach myself Japanese for the past decade+, I entered into actual classes this year. Hopefully this will put me on the path to eventually putting an end to this language barrier BS.

Soldier Blade. I have yet to finish it without using emulation save states. I have completely conquered every other game I set out to seriously play.

Yeah, I got stuck back in the day on that game.  The first part, was where you had to find a pillar to blow a whistle at.  The next was a part around where Timmy was in trouble......might've been when he was turning to stone.  Didn't know I had to see Dr. Flair.  Another time, was with that lady, but, I eventually figured that out.  Then I played it again when it was translated, & ofcoarse knew what to do at that point.

Tatsujin - Probably the hardest shooter I've ever played on the pce. I once made it to stage 3 by chance, but today I think I'm lucky if I could pass stage 1 again.

There are probably a lot of games for me if I looked back at games that I tried putting effort into. A few I can think of at the moment: Legendary Axe, Veigus Tactical Gladiator (the lack of extra lives/continues is painful when you have made it far and died), Blood Gear (the weird language barrier part I'm stuck at that resfues to let me go anywhere  !).

One of these days... I WILL finish Image Fight without dying.

It's the first game that I can remember that really whipped me, while still being incredibly fun. Some of the checkpoints (even stage 2!!!) took me quite a while to get out of, but they were hellishly fun all the same!!

I've been having a lot of fun collecting games (I have a pretty big collection now) so Image Fight has been shelved as I've been sampling some other stuff...

But even with all of the games I've gotten, Image Fight still has the best gameplay.

I've had my butt kicked far too many times to list them all, but here's a few off the top of my head:

R-Type - See nat's comments (except it's rare for me to make it past level 5).
Might & Magic III - About halfway through (I think) and I can't figure out where to go.
Godzilla - My scores are always too low to uncover the last two or three bosses.
Order of the Griffon - I keep getting my ass kicked in the tomb.  I should follow a walk through so I can finally finish this one.
Hawaii Island Girls - It's just too damn hard (so to speak).

I always have a hard time with Hawaii Island Girls, myself. I just get so worked up I usually end up losing control.... And then I have to turn it off.

Trying to think of a PCE/Turbo game...  Hmm.....

Exile II (US version).  This one kicks my ass.  I did get to the last level boss IIRC, but that was like 10 years ago.  I gave it a light go a few months ago, and I couldn't even pass the first action-based stage before I threw in the towel again.

Startling Odyssey II-When you get about half way through the game, you go into this dungeon with A bunch of conveyor belts. You just keep going around and A around on the damn things. You'll fall through holes in the floor,in which you take ladder back up and do the whole thing over again.

Blood Gear-I got stuck in A certain point in this game, and was unable to proceed.I believe it was discussed in here on how to get past that part.I didn't care enough to go back through and play it again.

Nexzar-The game kicks ass,its impossible to avoid being hit or destroyed. The game play reminds me of Magician Lord.In terms of the enemies just relentlessly attack every two seconds.

Yeah, post about the situation and I'll try to help you out.  Is it the infamous part where you can go to three different towns and an action scene with a corridor that fills with water?  Everyone seems to get stuck there their first time through.  I took some notes on that part when I replayed the game a few days ago, so I can probably be of some assistance.

Image Fight.  Damn.  I'm able to beat all the levels- but not without getting hit with the penalty zone after the last which is why I haven't seen the ending.  That penalty zone.  Ack.  I feel I almost beat that zone too but its ludicrously frustrating and I'd rather not face it again anytime soon.

I agree with Nat on R-type completely.

Son Son II owns me.  I've gotten very close and I've played it a lot- just can't close the deal.  Great game.

Gomola Speed definitely makes a clown out of me.

  The first 5 levels in Image Fight are only the training missions. There are 3 more levels after the training levels.

I would say "I hate to break it to ya" but I would be lying. The challenge is a big part of why I enjoy the game so much.

And how sweet is it that there is a penalty zone?!?! I love that!

I've never managed to clear it myself. Is it possible? :?: 8-[

Yeah, Image Fight threw me off when I finished stage5 the first time. I was like "dude, I pwned you, you googly eye freak. It's finally over" and then..."what? It ain't over yet?"

I get my ass kicked in stage 6 all the time. It's tough, I've only been able to pass the meteor shower once. Even on the FM-Towns port they give you no quarter.

Really good. Music and graphics are nearly identical to arcade. My only gripe it's in wobble mode instead of tate.

I posted video of it months ago over here - http://www.vimeo.com/user154778/videos

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing! You're right about the graphics and music. The instrumentation for the music sounds very similar, if not the same as, the arcade.

Very interesting that the FM Towns version lets you scroll down the screen.... that's a pretty drastic difference from the PC-Engine version. It seems like the game actually maintains the aspect ratio of the arcade version but instead of smooshing everything the camera pans down to the area that doesn't fit on screen!

Yup, the aspect ratio is exact if it was on vertical monitor, but you only see half of the playing field depending on your position. This is known as wobble mode, and it can be irritating (at least me anyway it hard to adjust)

Okay, so the map is roughly set up like this:

Town A - Town B - Action Scene
|
Town C

I know this is obvious, but make sure you've talked to everyone in each town, multiple times at that.  Some of them say different stuff the second and even third time you talk to them (even though you'll notice a lot of them are saying the same things).

And if anyone here can't get to the water part of the action scene, you can do it by destroying the brittle-looking piece of floor at the dead-end.  I believe I used a weapon I purchased at the second weapon shop in Town C (the one farther away from the entrance, I think you have to walk on a thin path around the water to get there).  I think the weapon was the "S Pod" or something, and it cost 200 or somewhere thereabouts.

In the water part of the action scene, proceed until you reach a barrier you can't destroy.  You might want to actually hit it and try to break it, as that might be part of the trigger.

Then go to Town B.  In the back of a building (I think it was the factory) in the northwest part of town, there's a guy who looks like a doctor who should give you a new item.  Make sure you have room in your inventory for it.

Then go to Town A.  There's another doctor guy; I believe he's in a house.  If you bring him the item from the doc in Town B, he should give you the bomb you need to destroy the barrier in the water part.

Note that if you go to Town C at this point, and you walk through the bar and out the backdoor, there should be a new guy standing there selling stuff.  IIRC, the most expensive item on his list is the Maximum Shield.  You can only hold one of these, IIRC, so you won't be able to buy it if you already have one, even if you have enough cash.

Sorry if some of this was kind of vague, but you know me, I've played through a bunch of games since Blood Gear so it isn't quite as fresh in my mind.  But the locations noted where you acquire the necessary items should all be spot on.

Ok thanks a lot, I will try that out later! I thought maybe that was the case where I had to go back and talk to people after visiting the barrier in the water area, but it looks like there is more communicating involved than I thought.

Update: Past the water filling tunnel, it leads outside to the map and you then have to go to some hallway with this big piece of machinery at one part that crushes you. I'm being lazy and haven't put much effort into it, but I can't figure out what to do with him. I'm assuming I need to buy that Maximum Shield thing because I don't see how I could destroy or outrun that thing.

You can destroy it, but if you do it my way, you'll take some damage, so be sure to bring some healing items along.

Go to Town C in the makeshift map I made.  I believe the weapon you need is in the second weapon shop, the one farther from the entrance.  (IIRC, it costs 500 and it's called "Mega Bazooka," if you can read the item names.)

When you have that weapon, head back to where that machine is.  Inch forward until you can just barely see it.  It won't charge at you until you actually fire at it.  (And you might want to take care of those ceiling cannons before dealing with the big machine.)  Then fire away.  You should be able to destroy it before it kills you, although you'll probably take a big hit, so heal up right afterwards.  If it kills you, you probably need to strengthen your mecha a little more.

By the way, this is a great spot for picking up points.  IIRC, that machine often drops an item ("GN Unit," I think it was called) that can be sold for a pretty hefty sum (1000, I believe).  So you can exit the hallway and then enter it again to destroy the thing multiple times and pick up a bunch of the units.  Sell them off back at town and then return to get more.

As for the Maximum Shield, I didn't use it until the very last boss.

OK thanks a lot. I did try taking it out before by slowly inching up on him and using one of my gun weapons, but he charged after me as soon as it hit and I was under the impression that you automatically died when he touched you. I'm pretty sure I know what weapon the mega bazooka is and I'll give that a try tonight. Thanks again!

Magician Lord -- still haven't beaten it.

Super Pitfall (NES) -- "", but I think I've gotten pretty damn close.

Athena (NES) -- Jesus, I just choke at all the worst moments.

Deep Blue -- Granted, I haven't played this game much, but I don't think it matters: I have already convinced myself that I won't be able to beat it.

Chris' Adventure (SCD) -- Dear God, this is a tough game and I just gave up. This is one of the games I actually have a desire to go back and beat, probably because I am a masochist.
