Title: Well? What do you think of Super Mario Galaxy?
Post by: Joe Redifer on November 15, 2007, 02:58:57 PM
The game is out, and everyone but me is saying that it is the best game ever made or will ever be made. I have the game. I haven't finished it yet, but here are my opinions so far.
-Mario looks like a toddler with a mustache. Seriously. Same exact body as a toddler. -Game is pretty fun. -Wii controls are absolutely unnecessary. Game would be far better with real controls. -Camera can piss me off at times and causes problems with depth perception in some areas. -Great graphics... for the Gamecube. -Press MUTE for the "SUPER MARIO GALAXY!!!!!!!!!" that is shouted in your face when you click on the "disc channel". -2nd good game for the Wii. I don't like Zelda games, so there can be an argument made that the Wii actually has 3 good games (the 3rd being Metroid Prime 3). -Annoying buzzer when you have 1 hit point left. -Good music.

I think this game is gay. I bet you guys already knew I was going to say that, haha. I mean come on, Mario is buzzing around in that bee suit like a fag. Nintendo has changed since we were kids [-(

It can't be as bad as Mario Sunshine. What are the Wii controls like? I've been holding off buying it since I don't want to be forced to waggle like a retard, I wish every game was like NiGHTS and had optional real controls.

When did this come out? I had no idea. My wife is going to flip..... Yup, there she goes.
I'm sure we'll be buying it soon and I'll get back to you with my thoughts.
But like GUTS, I'm curious about the controls.

I actually kind of liked Mario Sunshine, it was Mario 64 I never could get into, & I have both the N64 & DS versions. Probably won't play the new Mario for awhile, since it'll be a long time before I can pay money to get a Wii. But, I always prefer 2D when it comes to Mario. There is Super Paper Mario, which I've heard is great. I'm waiting for my one friend that has a Wii to pick it up.

I will describe the controls. I am here FOR YOU!
You must use the nunchuck.
Wii Remote: -Press A to jump. -Waggle to spin and attack enemies. You will be doing this A LOT! -Waggle to spin in hollow stars which launch you to new "planets" within the level. -Waggle in mid-jump to spin and jump higher. -Constant onscreen cursor follows where you are pointing. -Point at "star bits" to collect them. Star bits feed hungry lumas 'n shit. Tacked on, for sure. -B button (trigger) shoots the star bits. This can stun some enemies (like spinning into them), but it wastes star bits and it much slower.
Nunchuck: -You can waggle the nunchuck instead of the Wii Remote to accomplish the same exact things. -Analog pad moves Mario around. -Big shoulder button crouches or does an ass stomp in mid jump. -Little shoulder button attempts to recenter the camera, but usually the game does not allow you to do this.
Yes, the game is better than Sunshine. But in my opinion Mario 64 is better, and Super Mario World is better than that.

Yeah, f*ck Mario. Sunshine was mediocre at (the most generous use of the word) best.
Call me when Mario 128 comes out.

As far as the 3D Marios go, I never even bothered to buy Mario Sunshine. That whole Mario-with-a-SuperSoaker thing with a bunch of non-Mushroom Kingdom characters just looked kind of lame. Not to mention the whole thing just looked very un-Mario-like. I can't picture myself having an enjoyable experience playing it.
Mario 64 was OK, but I never played all the way through it. I've started it a bunch of times with the idea in mind to finish it but I never do. It's too hard because of the N64's shitty-ass analog stick and the game just controls horribly. Plus the camera is f*cked up 75% of the time.
I'll wait to pass verdict on Galaxy until I play it, but as of now, I'll take a 2D Mario adventure over any of the 3D incarnations.

You gotta be pulling my chain. You think that is the best? I played the heck out of the ol' Atari version (still have it, I think), but it ain't better than the NES/SNES games. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

jeez, you guys are strict. Before this, i'd only ever heard one bad review, then joe says something bad and you're all kicking it around.
Also, the original Mario Bros. was indeed awesome, but I wouldn't trade it for any of the SMB games.

Maybe he's pulling your chain, but I'm not. That game is f*cking awesome. I have it on NES cartridge and also on my Apple //c+. The Apple version is actually pretty damn good. I've logged a shitload of hours with that game. I used to keep a running high score list (since the game doesn't save a high score table) of my top scores.

Hey, personally, I just said I'll wait to pass judgement until I play it. And then I went on to comment about how the previous two 3D Mario games kind of sucked.
I don't think anyone here has really played it except for Joe so I wouldn't pay attention to the smoke coming out of their asses.

I never stated I played the game. I simply:
1. Made fun of the ridiculous .
2. Stated that I did not enjoy Super Mario Sunshine (excepting the graphics, the music, and Yoshi).
3. Stated that I would only care if the TRUE sequel to Super Mario 64 came out.

Although I can't deny that Super Mario Bros was a well-made and iconic game, I never really cared for it that much. The US version of Super Mario Bros 2 was the first proper Mario game I ever enjoyed. I never really got in to Super Mario 3, not sure why. Super Mario World kicked all sorts of ass. Hated Yoshi's Island due to the sound alone. Super Mario 64 was awesome. Yes, it had many flaws, but it was one of the first games like that so we were pretty stupid. Super Mario Sunshine was boring as all hell. Super Mario Galaxy is definitely better but I'm already getting a bit bored, plus I hate waggle controls! I want to play with a real controller!

No it's just unlike all the other sites in the world, this one is (relatively) free from Nintendo fanboys (they will defend and praise everything that says Nintendo on it, even though it is almost always bad/crap). That's why I like this place.
This game seems all right, no more no less.
PS: Super Mario World is the best game ever made (this is an unbiased truth, not opinion).

What is REALLY boggling is deciding whether you used "f*cking" as a qualifying verb for the adjective "stupid" for emphasis or if you somehow saw procreation where we did not.
Also, were you talking about the recording being played through the phone being stupid, or were you talking about how it is stupid to record the phone playing the message?
You are a man of mystery, nat.

I don't get why everyone seems so "pissed" over a Mario phone call, haha. You only get one if you pre-ordered it from GameStop right? I actually think that's a good idea since it lets you know when you can pick up your game. I wonder if they're going to do that for Smash Bros?
I think SMB2 might be my favorite too. I liked New Super Mario Bros., but it still wasn't quite what I wanted.
It was deffinitly what I was looking for, since, there hasn't been a 2D Mario in ages. But, I'd love to see a direct sequal to SMB2.
What I really love about it is how the game takes a lot of inspiration from SMB1 and 3 to give it that "quiet feel". My favorite was how before each level a blank screen would appear showing a Mario face and how many lives he has left. It's also pretty straight forward and easy to jump right into the game, which is something that's desperately needed for games these days! I just wish the game wouldn't give you so many 1-ups and reset them when you restart and controlled more like the NES ones. I was so glad to hear that there was no Yoshi and other new skool Mario characters, though for some reason they still included King Koopa's son or whatever he is.

Yoshi is a douche. Or rather, he became a douche. In SMW and SMW2 he was pretty cool. Yoshi's Story is pretty badass I guess.
The worst thing that happened to the Mario franchise was when they gave everybody voices. I always thought of the Mario world kind of like it was portrayed in the movie. Then they started adding voices to everyone and everything and it started feeling like a bunch of f*cking toddlers or something. I thought the GBA "Advance" remakes of the classic 2D Mario games were pretty damn cool. Except for the voices. I can't even playing the friggin' things because of them, despite the games themselves being what I would consider the "definitive" versions of said titles. I always loved Luigi's jumping in SMB2, and they "fixed" the other games in the "Advance" series so his jumping was consistently high. I've heard people say that high jump sucks because you can't control it. I say those people are whiny losers that don't know how to play video games. When utilized properly, that high jump was the most useful tool in SMB2, hands down.
Does anyone know: is there any kind of cheat or option to disable the voices in the Advance titles?

I agree that Mario looks like a toddler. His body is that of a 2 to 3 year old with a mustache and giant gloves.

Because instead of a simple "Hey, it's a me-ah Mario, your copy of Super Mario Galaxy is at Gamestop today! Come pick-ah eet up!", it was an entirely too long and retarded message.

Yeah the little Mario voice bits suck, they should be more like the cartoon. And for the record, Mario ain't Italian. From Donkey Kong until the first Super Mario Bros., he was Polish and then after that he became Mexican.

I got SMG yesterday as a birthday gift and I have to say, it's pretty damn awesome. I played for a good few hours today. Certainly light years better than Sunshine, and dare I say, better than Mario 64.
The controls are actually pretty standard with relatively little "Wii gimmicky" stuff thrown in, and what is, seems to mix really well with the standard stuff. Joe wasn't kidding when he said it's one of the best looking Wii games so far. Graphics are really, really sharp.
The one downfall for me is the game is kind of easy. The toughest part I've encountered so far is where you have to surf on the back of this sting-ray down these rapids that are suspended in mid-air. There are no sides so if you fall off, you die. Think of the Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 64. This part was a welcome challenge, because the 8 or so stars I collected before that were just a breeze to get. Still, the rapids weren't too tough and I nailed it easily after a couple tries.
So far, great game overall, a must-own for anyone with a Wii.

Yeah I agree, way too easy with the exception of the sting ray part (took me about five tries to beat). Fun game, but I haven't been playing lately since I've had strep throat all week.

I've seen a Wii in action, so I know that it exists (unlike Gnome, Alaska). Perhaps you meant Nome, Alaska, in which case there's bound to be a few lookers out of a population of 3500. Anyway, don't be such a graphics whore; the Wii can produce equal or better graphics than any console other than the 360 and the PS3.

Thank you. At first it was kind of neat, I'll admit it. But the novelty quickly wore off and it just became grating / obnoxious.
Truth be told, though, I can get annoyed with a lot of games when they have repetitive sound effects that are obnoxious. Dance Dance Revolution is a big offender here (with the inane comments... I don't mind inanity, but it needs to be delivered with gusto!)
blah, blah, blah....
I am still without a Wii... so I haven't played SMG. Looks kool as hell, though.

I got a second copy for my birthday, straight from my inside source at the Nintendo USA facility right here in Redmond, WA.
As much as I enjoy the game, I don't need two copies. So this latest copy is available for trade if someone wants to trade me another Wii game (I'd like Metroid Prime 3). The copy I have available is still in shrinkwrap, even has the Internal Use Only/Not For Retail Sale sticker on it. Not like that makes it any more valuable or anything, but still. Feel free to PM me if anyone wants to trade.

I'd ebay it if I were you. if you call it "SEALED ULTRA RARE!!!!" you might get more than retail for it. I'd trade metroid prime 3 for it, if i had it.
Only if you're talking about artwork, which is obviously subjective; the Wii isn't even in the ballpark when it comes to resolution, textures, and fancy effects.
Title: Re: Well? What do you think of Super Mario Galaxy?

Well you can't really compare Mario to a game like Gears of War in the first place.
One is obviously meant to be a cartoon, the other as realistic as possible. It's apples and oranges. I will admit that GoW looks really f*cking nice though.
I personally think that SMG looks friggin' great, the best looking Mario game ever. And that says a lot coming from me, someone who doesn't like 3D games much to begin with.
My point was more that SMG wouldn't look any better if it was on the 360 instead of the Wii. It's no question the 360 and PS3 have more graphical horsepower than the Wii, but I wholeheartedly disagree with the statement that the Wii "isn't even in the ballpark."
It's in the ballpark, it's just in the outfield. The difference between them all isn't as significant as some people make it out to be.

Assassin's Creed has incredibly architecture, tons of extremely detailed character models on screen at once, complex interactions with the environment, and amazing lighting all happening at once (the lighting in particular is mind-blowing). Galaxy has what? Some nice looking textures? The Wii couldn't even handle the lighting effects Assassin's Creed uses, anyone who says that Galaxy looks even remotely close to Assassin's Creed is just plain delusional. Do yourself a favor- play Assassin's Creed up until you get to Jerusalem, then climb a building and look out over the city and notice the detail, draw distance, and lighting. The Wii will never, ever be able to do graphics like that. The end.
I'm not talking gameplay of course- Assassin's Creed was ultimately not that great of a game, and by all accounts Galaxy is an amazing game. We're talking PURELY graphics here.

I must have been imagining all the lighting effects Galaxy does, then. That, or you haven't played it (like most haters) and have no idea what you're talking about.

Meh. The Genesis could never do all the colors that the TG16 or SNES did, but that didn't mean it didn't get comprable games. Hell, they were often better (final fight?)

Title: Re: Well? What do you think of Super Mario Galaxy?

Does Mario have real shadows that deform over the level architecture? Does EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING in Galaxy have a shadow? Does Mario have multiple light sources at once that all effect shadows in real time? If I missed all this, then I retract my statement about Galaxy's lighting, all I noticed about the game was the really nice textures and smooth framerate. Nothing about the amount of draw distance, level architecture, or lighting really stood out to me as anything amazing that a Gamecube couldn't do on it's best day, just the textures were obviously beyond the GC's abilities in my opinion.
Again I'm talking purely about graphics on a technical level, we're not talking about what merely looks nice, keranu. Klonoa on Psone looks really "nice" but I'm not going to argue it looks as good as the best PS2 games.

I like the art style, but it really needs real controls. Imagine playing NES/SNES Mario games with Wii quality motion control.
I'll be the first person to poop on motion controls, and the motion controls in Galaxy WILL get you killed at times. But, what tactile controls are there in the game are nice and tight.

I never had any problems with the motion control in Super Mario Galaxy. Where were you running into issues, the waggle usage was pretty spot on for me.

Same here, but i often noticed a bit of a lag in response if you needed to do 2 consecutive waggles. Maybe by design, and it cetainly added to the tension, but frustrated the shit out if me when you needed it.

During jumping segments Mario would spin accidentally, usually when you didn't want him to causing instant controller throwing. It's like the Wiimote goes crazy at times.

Maybe due to low batteries? I never had that problem. With that said I usually play with a fairly steady hand so I didn't make a lot of accidental waggles.

Yeah, sorry to see the hate for Mario here... ugh.. Both the Galaxy games IMO are excellent games, and Super Mario Sunshine, for me, is a must have.

Just bought that last weekend, should be at the house if the mail has arrived. First time playing it, so I am coming in with no expectations.

So do you guys think Super Mario Galaxy is a BETTER GAME due to it's motion controls, or do you feel it would be just as good or better with normal controls instead?

IMO the motion controls inadvertently interfere with the gameplay at times. If Mario's spin move was assigned to a button then the game's controls would be nearly flawless. Surprisingly playing the game with a "split" controller is actually pretty comfortable.
...If Nintendo dialed down the sensitivity required to activate the "spin" move they may have had a game where waggle controls actually worked in a game.

Oh, I have to agree with you on this. There should have been a way to play it normally. I never liked the idea of being forced to use the motion controllers. That is the only negative point from me though. :)

I didn't really notice anything. Coulda been low batteries, I guess. Even with a steady hand in my experience it didn't matter. It would just happen on its own.

Were you using a first party wii-mote?

I don't think the motion controls interfered in any way with my ability to play the game. I think it's about the same as it would be with a button replacing the waggle features.

Yep. First-party. I persevered though and 100% completed the game. :)

Motion controls for platformers completely suck and ruin the game.
If you play like I do, which is slouched in a recliner while rocking back and forth, the game is pretty irritating.
I guess if you play with a stone-hand grip like DDan, you won't have to worry about it though.
