Title: Ever play Turbo-Grafx on Drugs or Alcohol?
Post by: Golgo13 on November 19, 2007, 11:43:56 PM
I tried playing Keith Courage after I drank jack daniels, but the music made me dizzy.

Yes, but only while drinking. I seem to get higher scores playing Devil Crash when
I'm drunk as opposed to when I'm sober.  Or at least I think I do...  :-k

Game Party!

Playing a Bomberman drinking game comes highly recommended!  Especially with the equalizing rule (winner must drink a shot.)

I drink beer and play the Turbo every weekend. It's a little ritual I have. My wife hates it because I stay up late and come to bed early in the morning. Of course, without a RedBull or Rockstar this whole concept falls apart because the alcohol makes you tired and you end up nodding off.

You see, there is a very defined "zone" you can get into after a couple beers (2 and 1/2, maybe 3) where your confidence is boosted just enough so that your playing ability actually improves. It's a really fine line, though. After 3 or 4 beers, the alcohol is definitely a detriment as your reflexes and reaction time go down the shitter. I've gotten some of my best scores of my life while playing in this "zone."

When I was younger, maybe 10 years ago or so, I used to play stoned and high all the time. I tried playing TurboGrafx (don't remember what game) on mushrooms once but I actually had to turn the game off because I was more interested in what was going on in my room.

I've found most substances are pretty detrimental to one's playing ability for one reason or another. Either you can't concentrate on the game or your reflexes are shot. Although I will admit I have never been as absorbed into games as I was when I'd play Space Harrier stoned. I think the first time I actually beat the game I was ripped out of my head. Now that's an experience everyone should have!

Popping a couple Vicodin and playing is always good for some fun, too.

I guess the "Winners Don't Use Drugs" slogan that was on the Arcade machines back in the day should have come with a disclaimer "(Unless your in the "Zone")"

Same here, though I believe that drinking in moderation is ok, but, I don't get drunk.

Though, there was a time when I would snort Vitamin C & drink Rubbing Alchohol & play Night Creatures & Drop Off.  Aw, memories.

Drinking is the provincial pastime here in Nova Scotia....if not national. heh  But getting drunk is happening less and less for me. I just hate the hangover too much now. When I was younger I could just brush the night before under the rug and be ready to go out all over again. Now? Not so much. And I'm not complaining by the way. Less is more.  8)

As I have gotten older, I too can't seem to drink the way I used to in High School, in high school when I think back, sometimes I wonder what the hell we were thinking, and back then we used to drink malt liquor because it was cheap,  old english and steel reserve 211, wow, that was no joke.

Molson, hockey, and moose tipping.  Ahhh, good times, good times.  :)

I don't like hangovers either, so I just stay drunk instead.  Woo-hoo, screwdrivers for breakfast!

I played Spriggan drinking insane amounts of beer once -- I think I was about... 17 years old?  I recall drinking my 21st can of beer, then I blacked out.  I apparently went on to polish off the whole case of beer by myself according to my friends.  I can't even fathom drinking that much these days, or even half of that amount.

...Then I proceeded to pass out... then I woke up up and threw up on the blanket that I had... and went back to bed with that same blanket... then got up later, unzipped my pants, and pissed all over the floor (and the blanket)... then proceeded to go back to sleep in the piss & vomit soaked blanket.

Yeah, my friends and I still talk about that incident which happened like 13-14 years ago.  :-s

Nah, even if that was true, there would have been a certain "Overlap" period in the late 70's early 80's.  You know, pac-man, coke, some ludes, some disco, stuff like that.

No drugs or alcohol for me. They're a waste of time. I used to drink the occasional wine cooler but then I wondered "what's the damn point? It tastes like soda, might as well just drink soda, as it's cheaper and tastier!". And actually, I have narced out quite a few people in the past...a$$holes who sell drugs to minors. Adults can destroy their lives as they see fit, but children?

I have the original Gate of Thunder from 1992. It cost $69 and 95 cents at Radio Shack. You have to go to Radio Shack to get this game. It closes at 9:30, Ray. We have to get there before 9:30, Ray. My highscore is 3 million 984 thousand 3 hundred and 83. I had all my lives left. Ray, where's my Turbo Express, Ray? We have to go to Radio Shack now, Ray. It closes at 9:30, Ray. The Radio Shack in the South End Plaza Mall. It has the best collection of games, Ray.

I don't think I've ever gotten shit faced and played games.

I know I've gotten totally shit faced and did stupid Guy Kazama impersonations. Probably some Final Zone II impersonations... it's hard remember, my memory is a bit fuzzy of those nights.

We (or should I say, 'cause I was the only one with enough money to buy the shit) used to buy Mickey 40's and King Cobra 40's. Everyone was given 1 Mickey and two King Cobra's ('cause they were cheaper and didn't take like shit after downing the Mickeys). I remember downing a 40 and then lighting up a bowl, got hungry and ordered some pizza. It felt like they took forever. I called twice asking why it was taking sooo long. In reality it was probably only 10-15 minutes.

I did try to play FF7 one time after smoking a bowl. That didn't work out to well. I spent the whole time look back and fourth between the screen and the controller. I kept forgetting where the buttons were on the controller. That totally sucked. It was probably 'cause I was always a rookie when it came to smoking. Never tried playing games on LSD. That would be a trip.

And lastly, it's still my goal to try peyote at least once in my life. Maybe I'll schedule in some game time if I ever get around to trying it.

This reminds me of a specific interview with the creator of Every Extend Extra, and how he talked about encouraging his employees to make _this_ game without the aid of mind altering drugs.  The impression he gave me after hearing the interview was that games like Lumines and Rez were made entirely out of drug induced hazes.

That being said, I personally love drinking while playing any of the Crazy Taxi games, drunk in the arcade is even better ^_^  Crazy Taxi just feels perfect as a drunk simulator, especially with all the people screaming, running away, and cursing at you.

Some games like Ikaruga are impossible to beat on the hard setting I think unless you are in that "Winners don't use drugs, unless they are in the "zone"" kind of mindset someone else mentioned.  There's a very relaxed, frantic, zen like state you must achive to really flow in a game like that.

Recently I took Return to Zork on the FX for a spin and decided I needed to drink for that game.  For minutes at a time a few pixles on the screen will move and a lot of Japanese talking without any text will commence.  I found myself getting up to do things while scenes went on, but drinking some, kept me in my seat lol.
