Title: Best PC-E shooters?
Post by: MissaFX on November 30, 2007, 01:17:43 PM
I was wondering what shooters for the PC-E people love.  The main reason I am interested in a PC-E is for 2-D shooters so it would be wonderful to know which cards to be looking for.  Oh I am mostly interested in card based games, but CD games are fine to include too.

I love all the games in the soldier series. Gunhed, soldierblade, final soldier, superstarsoldier. all good. I also love pc Denjin; one of the best games on the console  8)

Space Harrier is a very atypical shooter, but is my favorite. Best game ever (where do you think my avatar came from?)!

Air Zonk (PC Denjin in Japan) is pure bliss. The whole Gunhed/Soldier series is good. My least favorite is Super Star Soldier, try the others first. Download is an good horizontal shooter with an interesting storyline. Psychosis (Paranoia in Japan) is superb. Mr. Heli is an awesome shooter that is more difficult than it's cute-ish overtones let on. Aero Blasters (Air Buster) is good. Everyone enjoys a good run through Darius.

The list goes on and on and on but those are some good carts to get started with.

Silent Debuggers. :P

Seriously, that game is crack.
But yeah, also TG-16 R-Type is cool, as well as Gradius. I REALLY REALLY want to try Sapphire!

In addition to fine shmups already mentioned:

Dead Moon
Parodius
Raiden

and if you want a polarizing shooter, try Deep Blue.  You'll either love it, or hate it.

You'll either love it, or hate it.

They said that about Tom Goes To The Mayor, and I used to hate it, but now I like it.

So I'll eventually like Deep Blue?

Detana!! Twin Bee

By far the worst port of this game, but still pretty good. Twin Bee can never be bad.

Also: Beware of Gunhed.

What's wrong with Gunhed?

Nothing, he's trolling. Gunhed is awesome. Although, some people complain because level 2 is "too long."

What's wrong with Gunhed?

Nothing. It's a great game and a Compile classic.

 In no particular order:

 Hucards

1941 - pure fun (SGX system)
 1943 - classic fun
Aero Blasters - great game and port
 AirZonk - great game
 Aldynes - awesome (SGX system)
Atomic Robo kid - only decent
Blazing Lazers / Gunhed - awesome game
Bouken Danshaku Don - weird difficult fun
Burning Angels - ... haven't played it, but looks like top view classic fun
Coryoon  - hardcore cutesy fun, Zonk's engine was based on this game (supposedly)
Cyber Core - classic and fun
Diasenpu - decent at best but still some fun.
Darius Plus - "classic" Darius fun.
Dead Moon - fun but average. Also - anything that isn't supposed to be there, the aliens put there.
Deep Blue - masochistic side of you would enjoy it.
Detana!! Twin Bee - great fun.
 Download - nice game
 Dragon Saber - classic
 Dragon Spirit - pre-classic.
Fantasy Zone - pre-classic Sega fun
Final Baster - looks like top-view fun.
Final Soldier - more Soldier fun.
Armed F - hard and not fun.
Gokuraku Chuka Daisen - side view fun
 Gradius - classic fun.
 Heavy Unit - total shit.
Hana in the sky - ???
 SideArms - great classic fun
ImageFight - hard kind of fun?
Kiki Kai Kai - top view like Undeadline - decent I guess
Kyuukyoku Tiger - Tiger Heli top view action.. that means it's a slooow type of game(think Raiden but slower?).
Magical Chase - very fun. US version > JP version if you can afford it.
Metal Stoker - Granada style action!
 Mr. Heli - .... wtf
Ordyne - cutesy fun, but average at best.
 Override - awesome hucard.
 P-47 -   meh..
 Paranoia/Psychosis - great fun.
Parodius - sweet game. This is an awesome port. One of the top Hucards next to SF2...
Power Gate - sucks eggs. Might suck something else, too...
Psycho Chaser - might be top-view fun - dunno
Rtype - masochisticly fun, believe me-you-me
Rabio - Flying rabbit side scrolling shooter. What else to say?
Raiden - very fun.. if you like this kind of shooter (slow and hard)
Rock on - crap, total crap.
 Salamander - great classic fun
 Sinistron - hard classic fun
 Tatsujin - super duper hard
Saint Dragon - arcade port.... never played it
Super Star Solder - I love this game. It's got its own vibe from the others in the series.
Soldier Blade - Still the best in the series. More difficult than SSS.
Terra Cresta II - the sequel!...
Thunder Blade - ass, total ass.
Toilet Kids - much fun.. OK, decent at best :P
Toy Shop Boys - fun little shooter but decent at best
W-Ring - nice lil' sleeper shooter - lots o' fun. This should have come out state side.
 Xevious - classic.

 CDs

Gate of Thunder - very fun if you're new to it. For us old timers, it got old after the 100th time beating this packin.
Ai Cho Aniki - pretty fun (unless you're a complete homophobe).
Avenger - fun but decent at best
Super AirZonk - fun, but not as spectacular as the prequel. I admit that I haven't beaten this game, so ...
Cho Aniki - awesome game. Better than the sequel
Cotton - awesome game. Definitely top choice of SCD or Hucards.
 Daisenpu Custom - more meh...
Download II - cool/fun but some parts look terrible...
Final Zone II (US) - a shooter hybrid - fun too. Some of the most bitch-slapping cinemas you'll ever see...
Forgotten Worlds - flicker, but great port with nice graphics. Lot's of fun. The sound track kicks ass.
Sapphire - Impressive game, lot's of animation, kick ass sound track, just not as fun as some other shooters after you've played it for a while.
 God Panic - bizarre shooter.
Gradius 2 - lovely game. Lovely.
 Hawk F-123 - .... looks lame
Hellfire -  decent at best. Nice cinemas though...
SideArms Special - more SideArms fun!
 ImageFight II - upgraded hardness
Kiaiden 00 - kick ass game. Get it. Top Choice PCE game.
L-Dis - decent at best, cutesy shooter.
 Legion - Oh god....
Lords of Thunder - Awesome game. Better than GOT, but fantasy setting this time (I would have preferred GOT setting for this game though).
Macross 2036 - I love this shooter (and no, it's not because I'm biased). Get it.
Metamor Jupiter - great game. The gfx are of an older style though - strange.
Mystic Formula - like Undeadline. Decent, but nothing to write to your girl/boy/other friend about.
Nexzr - great game, hard is a bit of an understatement.
Psyhic Storm - it's an average game, but still I love it. It's caulk full of funness and great sound track to boot.
Rayxanber 2 - great game if it wasn't so damn hard (and cheap). I have an invincibility patch for this game...
Ranxanber 3 - average difficulty, great sound track, nice graphics, fun game. One of my favs...
R-Type collection - RType in CD with new sound track and cinemas... what else to say?
Seirei Senshi Spriggan - f*cking kick ass shooter that I could never find/order back in the day. An CD 2.0 game that's more impressive than some CD 3.0 games
Spriggan Mark 2 - One of my all time favorite shooters. Like Target Earth or Cybernator, but as a shooter. I love this game. (Beat it on the Hard/Super hard settings to get the *real* last boss and better ending).
Star Parodia - awesome game. Get this game. The Parodius series of Hudson.
Steam Hearts - it has some nice graphics, but pretty hard and kind of soulless.
Alzadic - Don't remember much on this one... hehe Alzadick...
Super Darius - better than the hucard version, baby!
Super Darius 2 - better than Super Darius, baby!
Super Raiden - better than hucard version, baby!
TerraForming - decent game, but not much replay value. The game has some nice graphics, but since it's a cd 2.0 game, it's got a lot of repeatitive tiles through out each stage. Still - nice graphics.
Sylphia - this is a great game. I love the sound track too. Too bad the price is beyond reason.
Zero Wing - a CD 2.0 game released in 12/1992. Not very impressive at all.

Xevious: Fardraut Densetsu would be my top pick, still the best console port of Xevious.

About Gunhed, I love that game. When i think about PCE shooters, this the game that automatically comes to mind. It classic.

Image Fight is my personal favorite, but as others have pointed out it's not unique to the PC-Engine and is available for other systems.

It's very difficult, but the gameplay feels very well balanced.

The red pods rotate based on the directional movement of your ship, giving Image Fight a unique gameplay experience.

I suppose my 2 favorite hucard shooters are Gunhed/Blazing Lazers and Aero Blasters. I also had lots of fun with Soldier Blade, Air Zonk/PC Denjin, and Magical Chase.

What can I say. I'm a sucker for pretty sprites.

I have all the Parodius games on my Saturn. I don't need it on the PCE. I have it in better form. The games I listed, save Aero Blasters, are all original to the PCE and don't really have another expression short of the Wii VC.

haha. You got that right. I think you have to be an android to beat Nexzr on the hardest setting.  ](*,)

And if you want another really good shooter, but nearly impossible shooter, then pick up a copy of Raiden, on HuCard or CD. I think the only difference between the two is that the music is remixed for the CD.

Gate of Thunder, but of course.

Holy crap! I keep forgetting about the Xevious port for the PC Engine.  #-o Xevious is possibly the best shmup of all time. I'd love to play this port if I can just get around to modding my Duo.

Haha! I'm not surprised you say that, as you're not the first person to say that.  :P

The game does certainly start off slow (and the droning music doesn't help), but it gets intense pretty quick. I tend to cut it some slack since it was basically the first top down, scrolling shmup that actually used multiple bright colours. It revolutionized the genre regardless of what you think of the game.  8)

You're absolutely right.

Unfortunately, the game blows. That said, I still play the NES version from time to time. Although I can only take it in small doses.

Dang. That's harsh. Maybe the 3D sit down cockpit arcade version (Solavou) would be more to your liking.  :) I've been trying to get that MAME ROM to work for ages, but no luck.

Nice guys. I beat it on MAME, but it's easier because you have unlimited continues and you don't get sent back to checkpoints when you die. So I don't really consider that beating the game. But you guys have given me the push to get back on that horse and finally beat that son of a bee.

I've beaten both Super Raiden and Raiden on hucard. Great game, stage 10 is tough.

I love Xevious and I don't care if ppl like it or not, it's oldie but a goodie. It's def a milestone shooter for introducing a ranking system, something that inspired Compile to implement into Zanac.
