Title: I-Mockery's The 50 Greatest Arcade Cabinets In Video Game History
Post by: Kitsunexus on January 13, 2008, 08:47:05 PM
OK, before you start saying well "XX game is in the wrong place! The game is WAY better than that!", this is NOT about the games, but about the game cabinets. However occasionally they do mention the sound, and umm...sound isn't part of cabinet design, but whatever.
Do you agree or disagree? Personally, I'm more of a fan of the modern cabinets, but it was cool to see Exterminator featured as well as T-Mek and Sinistar.

I love the older cabs. Back then there wasn't much to games as far as graphics and sound were concerned so companies always added a little extra to the cabs to make for a better experience and help spark your imagination.

That's a pretty decent list, though a couple of the cabinets are fairly mundane (namely TMNT, 720o, and Pong). I'd love to have a six player X-Men cabinet and a spare room to put it in.

I agree, I felt like a handful of the cabs on that list were just included because they were "big name" games rather than actual intuitive cab designs. I mean, TMNT? C'mon. In the case of Pong though, the so-simple-it's-cool design makes it's mention worthwhile. But they omitted cool cab designs such as the hydraulic sit-down Space Harrier cab in favor of some pretty generic stuff. At least they got Hang-On and Afterburner.
I felt at times more like the author was simply listing his favorite cabs from back in the day that made him feel all nostaglic. "We all remember Smash TV." Uh, no we don't. There certainly isn't anything extraordinary about the cabinet itself, that's for damn sure.

True, other than the lack of buttons (double joysticks only) - the artwork was pretty shitty as well.

Its weird that you of all people would say something so silly...
Anyway, this list is not that great. Something installed into an R-360 should not only be on the list, but at least in the top 10. There should also be a Virtual On in there. Since there was an R-360 with VOOT installed, that could kill two birds with one stone.
Daytona 2 just because its so damn violent in the deluxe version. The MVS because of its modular nature. Ferrari F355 because of its three monitor set up, fantastically realistic shifter, clutch pedal, and dot matrix stats printer.
Sega, basically. AM4 were the masters. I don't know. If you are making a list of 50, which is pretty big, you'd think there would be more Sega. Even Brave Firefighters is a cooler cab that most of that stuff, even if it was someone of a crap game. Where the f*ck is Dragon's Layer. Sonic Blast Man? Obviously they've never played Punchmania: Fist of the North Star because that shit is way better. I fail to see how the 720 cab is any better than the Monkey Ball one.

They aren't talking about the speakers, but the sounds in the games. I don't see waht this has to do with cabinet design...

Friend showed me that a few nights ago in the vbchat room at neo-geo.com.
I can agree with,The Discs of Tron being number one realy i got to play it in the arcades back then.
The full environmental cab was realy a nice added touch to the game.

I'm suprised Space Invaders wasn't higher in the list.

I wish they would have used a pic of the good looking Star Trek unit. It has a seat that looks more like the captians chair and the chair is enclosed with walls so it is very dark inside the game. It has at least 5 speakers too. One of our local arcades had it for years and I was sad when it vanished one day. I soooo wish I owned it even though it would take up a bedroom here in my lil apt. The good version also has 2 monitors. 1 for the overhead view and 1 for the vector combat view. The cheaper one they are showing uses 1 monitor and crams everything on to it. The good version also has lights or leds which go back and forth from left to right below the combat monitor. The buttons on the captians chair also light up and it has a few other pieces of eyecandy.

That arcade cabinet was awesome. It was very TMP like. It was just cool hearing Spock's voice talk to you while you try and blast Klingons and Romulans into the Neutral Zone. 8) I remember there was a cabinet here, but I'm not sure if it was the dual monitor or the single monitor unit. :-k
However, TRON Deadly Discs deserves the #1 spot. I was getting worried that it wasn't going to be on the list as I was first reading that article. But there it finally was sitting proudly in the #1 spot. When you walk into that cabinet you feel like you are in TRON. What they need to make now is a lightcycle game where you crawl into the cycle - same position as in the movie - and fight against AI lightcycles or maybe even have 2 or 3 other cycles connected like in San Fransisco Rush type racing games. That would be sweet. =P~
