Notes:
-WipEout Pulse runs at a full 333MHz (previously, the PSP locked games at a maximum of 222MHz).  This has allowed Studio Liverpool to not only enhance the graphics greatly over WipEout Pure, but also hit 60fps for the first time in a handheld game.
-A new feature in Wipeout Pulse is the new ship customization feature. Go to http://www.wipeout-game.com/html/main/Home, make an account, and from there you can use the ship customisation tool to create your own skins for any of the ships in the game.
-WipEout Pulse has online play.  Finally!

The game runs fine in 222mhz mode as well if you want to save power, just always drop the rapid fire "flash the whole screen" gun everytime you get it, the fps slowdown in 222 is pretty bad when you shoot someone with it from close range.  It does run smoother though at 333...but it is not needed to play   Yet another reason I love the PSP.

Modified to add:

Oh yeah, it's awesome too!  The tracks are a joy to kill...err race on.

Does it play anything like Wipeout 1 on the PS?  If so then I'll do my best to stay as far away from it as possible.

It plays like wipeout fusion or whatever the first PSP one is called.

Personally I thought the controls on the first wipeout game were aweful, but they were wonderful by 3 on the ps1.  These games are like wipeouts 5 and 6 or even higher numbers, not some first generation ps1 game.

I have avoided all Wipeouts simply because of that shitty first game.  I tried the PSP one on a friend's PSP a couple of years ago and I hated it.

Racing games are one of my favorite genres.

Is that a DS game?  I can't tell the difference between PSP and DS graphics.  That looks like it could be a DS game.

Well Joe if you don't like it, get the f*ck out of the thread. :P

As for me, I've been a WipEout fan since the 3DFX version of Wipeout XL. I CANNOT wait to buy this game, if money wasn't so tight right now I'd pre-order it. Hell, I'll probably pre-order it in just a couple of minutes.

WIPEOUT FOR LIFE. Cars with wheels can bite me, as can hovercrafts without guns.

Get yourself a copy of the EUR demo and try it out!  No money ventured, nothing to loose.

Yeah I'm just joshin', nobody could possibly mistake those screen shots for anything the DS is even remotely capable of doing.

The graphics when you are playing the game look a lot smoother than those screenshots show.  The explosions and other weapons effects are impressive too.

Plus with the speeds the game goes it's not really that noticeable.

I think the graphics look pretty good, yeah it's no PS3, but this is a handheld we're talking about.

Well Keranu only likes things that are ultra shitty and no one else likes, so if he says the graphics suck that really means that everyone else in the world will think they're great.

But just imagine that 10 years from now the graphics will be sooo old and crappy!

Considering this being a portable game, the gfx are amazing in my book. Hell, Wipeout Pure still looks amazing (way better than PS1 gfx that is for sure).  One thing I also loved about Pure was the soundtrack and so far Pulse sounds like it won't disappoint.  Funny thing, I never really liked the Wipeout console versions for some reason, but I'll be checking out the PS3 version.

IGN (AU) Review - 9.0
http://psp.ign.com/articles/840/840713p1.html

"WipEout Pulse is the new racer to own on the PSP. It feels better, plays better, sounds better and looks better than every other racer on the system. Hell, it's better than certain next-gen racers that we dare not mention. Sure, it’s not a massive reinvention of the series. But with almost three years free of the brain-frying WipEout experience, we’re just happy to have something new which recaptures the glory days of old."

Also a feature I didn't know before - if you hate the in-game music (why????) then you can play tracks off of your memory stick.

Ok well haven't got mine yet...I bought it from a local ebay seller in Seattle and they said they had "30 available" but after waiting a few days I contacted them and they said that they are taking stock of the game today...sob.

I do plan on making Turbo/PCE/PC-FX skins though to share out to anyone who wants it on http://www.wipeout-game.com (http://www.wipeout-game.com/).  Will probably make some tonight :D

I kinda wish I didn't buy mine, I never had Pure, I just came straight from XL and Wip3out. So I'm not used to the controls, and I keep crashing into walls.

You using the d-pad or analog stick Kit?  For me, I use the analog stick, and use the L and R shoulder buttons to assist in turns (I assume they still use L & R in Pulse to help in turns)

I'm using the D-Pad, and it sucks that you can't set dual sideshift, only dual airbrake.
Title: My first skin.
Post by: Pcenginefx on February 19, 2008, 04:14:26 PM
After about 5 hours in photoshop this is what I got.  Had to do some massive pixel cleanup with the skin that was provided, as well as learn that you can only have 16 colors (SUCK!) so I decided to make the images B&W...otherwise it would look really crappy in color.  Not done with this skin yet....

Decided not to give up tonight (what's another 3 hours? :|) Made an entirely new skin, this time from scratch.  Not done yet (rear of cockpit and engine area not touched yet), but a lot happier with this one so far....

Using PC Engine icons works great for the skins since they are already only a few colors....using anything else (images, sprites) don't work out so well.

The design of this skin has been quite a challenge for me as I'm trying to create a design in a very small space - for example, the PCE you see on the ship is only about 25 or so pixels wide.  When gfx get down to this size, things get all bent out of shape (and you can forget anti-aliasing!).  When I'm totally done with this skin, I will submit it for publishing so that anyone can use it if they would like.

Ok here is the 99% finished "HE System" skin.  Whatever else I add to this will just be minor details.  About 6 hours of work in Photoshop to get this done - managed to get good looking Bonk sprites on there.

It looks much better in the game since you get some nice smoothing of the texture and ship model, plus you can see the transparent cockpit with the guy inside.

Played one track single-player yesterday and a few online races.  The control is very close to the first Wipeout Pure on PSP, which I have no problems with.  Love the entrie presentation and game so far.
