I saw The Eye and Rambo this weekend. I hadn't seen or read any reviews of Rambo going in, so I had no idea what to expect. For The Eye, I'd hear nothing but a few negative reviews. So here's my take.
The Eye - Normally these Asian-to-American conversions (The Ring, The Grudge, etc) don't impress me much. It always feels like something gets lost in translation. I don't mean language-wise; some part of the essence of the films are missing. The Ring was OK, definitely kind of creepy but not the best in it's genre. The Grudge was just horrible. I won't touch on their respective sequels. Despite the negatives I'd heard about The Eye, I actually enjoyed it. I might be a little biased since I have a huge crush on Jessica Alba, it's hard to say. I didn't get that "something's missing" feeling from this one, however. It was adequately creepy but I wouldn't say scary. It has a few of those "BOO!" startle-you moments but that's about it. Parts of the story were somewhat predictable, but I was interested to see how things would play out regardless. It kept me involved enough to hold my attention the entire time. In any case I enjoyed it and would recommend it for those who like these type of films.
Rambo - Good grief. Where do I begin? I'll make it simple. Imagine an hour-and-a-half long explosion with dismembered limbs flying at you the entire time. I saw more severed heads in this movie than in all the movies I've watched in the past 15 years combined. Great action flick. Loved it.
-
Here's my review (with spoilers, you've been warned):
Rambo
This movie kicks ass. Starts kind of slow, but the payoff is worth it.
I love how the wimpy do-gooders realize that peace and getting along and helping people is not the answer. Instead, good ol' violence is the solution, as always. I loved it when the do-gooder killed a bad guy and he realized his new life would be filled with action and adventure and that his old life was just a waste of everyone's time.
-
That's funny, I had the exact same thought at that moment. I think I even said something along those lines to my movie-going buddy.

Awesome, thanks for posting that.
-
lol. That's awesome Tatsujin. I think I see a pattern there. heh
I look forward to Rambo. I'll have to go see that and Cloverfield this week.
-
I've heard polar reviews on Cloverfield; all over the place on that one. GUTS loved it, Aaron walked out 20 minutes in.
Let me know what you think.

I want to see Rambo (and that new Rocky film) simply because I'm curious. They might stink, but I have to see them.
As for real films, I watched Stroszek (1977, Werner Herzog) again. I haven't seen it in.... a decade? ... but, damn, I still love this movie. I don't know if anyone here would actually dig it, so I would recommend a long list of other Herzog films before this one.
-
Rocky Balboa really wasn't all that bad; certainly better than V, which was pretty much ignored anyway.
-
The new Rocky was really good actually, if you like those movies.
I don't know, I might like Rambo better though.
-
I've seen bits and pieces of the latest Rocky movie while working the Walmarts. It doesn't seem like a bad movie.
-
I thought the new Rocky sucked (go figure). Too much lame dialog going on until the big bout and the big bout was no where near as exciting as the prequels. I thought Rocky V was pretty crappy too, but I have to say I enjoyed it more (if for the cheese factor alone).
-
Rocky 4 had music by Vince DiCola, didn't it?
-
Rocky 4 was one of the best Rocky movies, although I have no idea who did the music.
-

Yes.
-

word. it wasn't a rocky 1 not even a 2, 3 or 4, but it was light years better than the crappy 5!
-

just a little bit unrealistic. but regarded to the old aspirants, the new one was just risible. so no big probs. also for a 60yrs over rocky!

this is a little off subject but I've been a cult movie / horror buff for years and I was THRILLED to see that review of Dr Butcher MD in Turbo Force Magazine #3. Whoever had the gall to publish that in an up and coming video game magazine (complete with a detailed description and photos taken off the sceen!) has my respect.

After moving this weekend we were dog tired- just rented movies.
Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford-
I was expecting something good- but I must say this movie screamed "masterpiece". Gorgeous, lush cinematography, incredible acting- and it's always great to see Garret Dillahunt from Deadwood getting roles. Actually reminded me of the first season of Deadwood- the whole Wild Billd/Jack McCall thing.
Across the Universe-
Sucked. Sucked. Sucked. Turned it off halfway through. I knew what it was going in- but let's just say it doesn't work. Schmaltzy, corny, plain old crap. Everytime a character is introduced- "hi- I'm Sadie..." You can already see what song will be coming up ten minutes or so down the road. Even worse is that half of the songs seem to have no context whatsoever within the overreaching "story" that's playing out. Avoid.
The Nines-
Wow. This was bad. Started off really interesting- I'd say it stayed interesting for 2/3rds way through. Then it starts to become obvious that there'll be no payoff, no explanation, no nothing. Just a load of pseudo existential, "spiritual", self-indulgent horsecrap. What a waste of Hope Davis. Nice try from Ryan Reynolds- but this material is bad. It wants so hard to be one of those movies that stays in your head- leaving questions. The only thing it leaves it two hours of wasted time and a bad taste in your mouth. Stay away.
Also rented The Abyss as my girl never saw it- (she loved it), and I rented but have yet to watch the remake of Black Christmas- just for two reasons- was in the mood to see a bunch of hot girls getting butchered and I have a big thing for Mary Elizabeth Winstead. :P
-
Black Christmas is pretty shallow, but it's fine if you like that sort of thing.
-
I wasn't expecting high caliber stuff- just junk- and Mary Elizabeth Winstead...
-
I need to go see this new Rambo movie :) I liked the new Rocky film! I always liked Sylvester. I think he comes across as a really nice guy.
-
Live Free or Die Hard - I was on a movie roll this weekend, so I decided to top it off with the newest installment in the Die Hard series yesterday. It's really a shame I didn't go see this on the big screen. I wanted to, but timing was never right. Fantastic movie. If you've seen the other Die Hards you know what to expect here, and Bruce doesn't disappoint. It's been many years since I watched the original and seeing this really made me want to go pull it out and revisit. Some guy I know only as the "Mac kid" (from the Mac vs. PC commercials) plays in a great supporting role here and does a nice job. Although I kept expecting him to say "Hi, I'm a Mac." every time they met someone new. Great way to spend 2 hours, you can't go wrong. So in keeping with the trend of set by Rocky & Rambo, another classic series gets a breath of fresh air in 2008.
-
ha see that- Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays McClane's daughter in that one.
-
Oh, is that her? Yeah I guess she's kinda cute. She was in Black Christmas?
-
yeah and she's the girl in the cheerleader outfit in Death Proof.

The one who (SPOLIER)
gets her face ripped off by a tire?
(/SPOILER)
-
was it her? lol I guess so- yellow cheerleader uniform-
(http://mary-winstead.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/grindhouse_big4.jpg)
-
Oh wait no, she's in the second quartet of girls, she's the one Kim and Zoe left behind with that dude to borrow the Vanishing Point car.
I was thinking of Vanessa Ferlito.
-
right right she's with the chicks that get revenge but not there with the three of them at the end
she was being talked up for being wonder woman in justice league but I guess she lost out.
man I'd love to see her in that costume.
-
Cripes! What is she, 15? I'd hit it regardless, but she looks like jailbait.
-
I'd hit it regardless
lol. jeez I guess I better check- hold on...
-
:) :) :)
She's good boys! 23 years old- born November 28th, 1984!
:-"
twenty three skidoo! she's ready for it!
-
Funny because my other favorite (in that way) current actress looks older than Winstead- but I just found out that she (Camilla Belle- from the When A Stranger Calls remake, The Chumscrubber, The Quiet and the upcoming 10,000 BC) is 21. Beautiful, beautiful chicka. :-"
Sorry to pervert this thread Nat...
-
Is your 'modify' button broken, Sinistron?
-
no she works fine :P
it all depends on how quickly I have something more to say- if it's under a minute then I modify- if not I usually just add another. Does it grate on you that much, nitpicker?

I saw it in the theater. It was totally fun, despite some corny stuff. IIRC, they kept the gunfights rather short (unlike most movies that have gunfights going for 20+ minutes and use 30,000+ ammunition rounds).
Plus, who isn't amused by the "odd couple" formula: Bruce + "Mac Kid" ? Yeah, its corny, but it's fun :).
-

It grates on me. There is no reason to do that in such a short amount of time. The only reason people seem to like to do that is to inflate their post count. It also looks incredibly messy when viewing the page.
-
Live Free or Die Hard was awesome, I loved it. The end was especially cool, I didn't see that coming at ALL, and the whole movie was filled with some nice creative ideas that worked really well. Plus the one-liners were actually tasteful and not overdone (the few that there were, another great point), hell the best one was where McClain kills some dude and just yells "HA!", I laughed super hard at that.
-
Yeah, it was a great movie.
My favorite line was when he rammed that bitch with the SUV and while she was pinned to the front of the truck he goes, "How ya doin'?" all nonchalant. Great stuff.
-
She must be the bionic woman, climbing and kicking after all that!
-

"like to do" doesn't come into play here. I wasn't considering it- was thinking more about what I was writing at the moment actually.
As for inflating the post count- I made a minor joke out of it when approaching "Venus Bonk Trap"- I am here because I have something in common with most of the members here- a love of the pc-engine. I am not here to put on a show, to put on airs, or to further validate an already full and comsuming life by inflating my post count. If that was really my bag- you'd see me here on the weekends more. You do not.
You are a mod now- so if it really grates on you so heavily then either A) deal with it, B) edit it, C) kick me off the site, D) talk to me a little more respectfully, which can work wonders or D) continue to whine about it. The only option I don't care for is C- since I rather enjoy this page- but hey the power is yours.
I know you're the ninja and everything here- but this isn't the first time you or necromancer have come off strangely cold in my direction. Don't expect me to stay mum- not really my style.
-
Nobody's getting kicked off anything.
In the future just make an effort utilize "Modify" whenever possible so as to streamline other users' reading of the board as much as possible. It's a minor point of forum etiquette.
It's analogous to making the effort to fit your Hummer into one parking space at the mall (since I'm sure you have one). Sure you could just take up two, and save yourself 30 seconds of time but you inconvenience everyone else in the process.
That's it, no biggie. Nobody hates you, is going to kick you off or any nonesense like that. :D
Now, since this is my thread, I demand that this train of discussion ends now and we return to talking about movies.

I know you're the ninja and everything here- but this isn't the first time you or necromancer have come off strangely cold in my direction.
I'm not cold, just cynical and seldom serious (maybe I need to toss around a few more smilies). If you don't like me commenting on your bad forum manners, then I suggest that you either A) deal with it, B) ignore my posts, C) deal with it , D) go away, or E) deal with it. I vote for options A, C, or E.
Sort of back on topic (TV box set): I just watched a few episodes of Red Dwarf - Series 3, and it's pure gold. Beware the polymorphs!
-
Non-remasters I assume? DVD?
You've seen all the episodes, right?
-

I don't know where you think I'm coming off cold or disrespectful. To be honest I am not that familiar with you or your posting style, so any grudges you think I have against you are in your imagination alone. It's just common sense, that's all. Granted if enough time has passed and you have new and relevant info to add, then making a new post is fine. But mere minutes and just adding to the same chain of thought?
-

Correct on all counts, though it's been years since I've seen some of the episodes.

What series do you like best? They're all great, but I'm partial to 5.

Good reply- I admit! :o
I'll choose F.

Well maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. To tell it true- been having chest and back pain. Maybe that's why I got particularly annoyed when you said that the only reason I seem to be doing it is to inflate my post count. I hate when people make assumptions about me- especially when they're not that familiar with me as you noted. That said- enough nonsense. In theory it is nonsense that was spawned by me for not being as savvy with the posting and threading as you veterans are- so I will lay down an apology here to get shit over and done with- I'm sorry. Now back to Nat's thread. :D
-
Nah, I've just seen others do it on an older forum I moderate on, so we turned off post counts entirely (they're back on now).
It's not something I'd ever ban anyone for. But I can't ban anyone here I don't think. No worries!
-
What series do you like best? They're all great, but I'm partial to 5.
I don't really know. Until recently, I'd only seen them on broadcast television and never really paid much attention to which series a particular episode belonged.
-
Season 5 has classics such as "Holoship," "Back to Reality," "Quarantine," and "The Inquisitor."
-
Then I'd be inclined to agree that Series 5 is some of the best. Mr. Flibble for the win!
-
Quarantine was my favorite episode, ever, for a long time. I'm not sure I can make that statement any more though. "Stoke Me a Clipper" from the 7th series is damn good, the pre-title intro is possible the funniest 5 minutes ever laid down on film.
-
Fool's Gold - I thought this movie looked pretty stupid, but Holly wanted to see it so we did this weekend. In a complete upset, I found myself liking it all the way through. It's always good times seeing a 175 year-old Donald Sutherland do something, and Goldie Hahn's daughter is always tasty eye candy. Whoever plays Sutherland's daughter in this movie is f*cking hot, I need to go look up who that was. Her character was dumb as shit but damn, I'd give her the time of day and then some. The flick was a fun run all the way through, never a dull moment. Whatever-his-name-is actually played a part I didn't depise and the pretty locations were a great choice. A good "date movie" if you're into that sort of thing, and this one in particular became a personal guilty pleasure of mine.
-
I refuse to see this movie because it contains Matthew McConaughey. He is on my list of hated actors along with John Leguizamo, Diane Keaton and Vince Vaughn.
-
Goldie Hahn's daughter is always tasty eye candy.
I'm more than willing to tap Kate Hudson for thirty minutes, flip 'er over and hit it for ten more. Certainly a cutie, that one.

Alexis Dziena is tasty indeed. Check her out in the USA show Invasion.
I watched Shaun of the Dead today and enjoyed it somewhat, though probably not enough to label it a classic. Zombies and humor go quite well together, and the references to Evil Dead, 28 Days Later, and Romero's works were nicely done with smatterings of dry, English wit. I'm really looking forward to seeing Hot Fuzz now, as well as whatever the third title will be in the trilogy.
-

I'm with you 100%, which is one of the major reasons I didn't want to see this movie. Hence the comment:
Whatever-his-name-is actually played a part I didn't despise
I was caught completely off guard however, the chemistry between the actors (all of them) was uncanny.

Ha, we had a great time with both of those. Shaun of the Dead is the better flick but if you're any kind of Bond fan (I am) you'll enjoy seeing Timothy Dalton play the anti-Bond in Hot Fuzz. Both those movies will become cult classics, no doubt in my mind. And what's this about a third movie?
-
And what's this about a third movie?
Pegg and Wright have referred to the first two movies as part of the "Blood and Ice Cream" trilogy, or alternately the "Three Flavours of Cornetto". Apparently, the third one is tentatively titled "Paul" and revolves around a road trip across the U.S. I haven't a clue when it is supposed to be released.

10,000 BC - Cool movie. Went in not expecting to like it much, came out satisfied. It pulls off the "epic movie" thing really well, has a happy ending, and the characters are all likable. Does a good job getting you to care about the people and what happens to them. The only downfall is that the story is pretty predictable and follows the old cliched formula: girl gets kidnadpped, guy goes on a quest to rescue girl, guy rescues girl, everyone lives happily ever after.

Man, I was going to completely avoid this movie at all cost after this scathing review I saw someone give on CBC. I mean he tore into it hard. lol. But the chick looks hot as hell so I'll check it out regardless. hehe
-
She's cute, but 90% of the time she's bundled up in animal furs and rags so it's tough to get a good look at her.
What were that reviewer's complaints about the movie?
-
It's a rip-off of Apocalypto... IN ENGLISH!
Some cavemen get kidnapped by Egyptians to be slave labor to build the pyramids with the help of wooley mammoths. Along the way they get attacked by some crazy dinosaurs with beaks and feathers.
No, I'm not making this up.
I have always hated Ronald Emmerich. He sucks ass. Tha Day Afta Tommrow was a horrible, horrible movie. Don't make me review that! So was Independence Day.
-

I was wondering about that part. Did they just make those animals up? What the f*ck?
I have always hated Ronald Emmerich. He sucks ass. Tha Day Afta Tommrow was a horrible, horrible movie. Don't make me review that! So was Independence Day.
I'll have to disagree. TDAT wasn't anything special but it wasn't horrible. And back in the day when ID came out, it kicked ass. I haven't actually watched it in like 10 years though so I don't have a fresh perspective on it.
-
The Day After Tomorrow was indeed awful unless you were watching purely for the shitastical CGI. I saw Independence Day 6 months before it was released and it was better then than the final release. A subsequent recut a couple of months later (a few months before release) was even better, but it still sucked. The final cut resembled the first cut more than the second. I never got into calling it "ID4" because that is just retarded.
Oh! And let's not forget about the truly awful Godzilla from 1998. Ronald Emmerich truly has no right being alive.
-
I never got into calling it "ID4" because that is just retarded.
You got that right. Who started that? How did they come up with it? Why did it catch on? These are the eternal questions of humanity that need to be answered.
Oh! And let's not forget about the truly awful Godzilla from 1998. Ronald Emmerich truly has no right being alive.
I remember seeing Godzilla back in '98 with my girlfriend at the time.
That's funny, now that you mention it, I can see the similarities between all these movies. Who was he? Writer? Director? I'm not familiar with that name (and am too apathetic to Google).
-
Donnie Darko - WOW. JUST WOW. 10/10/10/10
Red Dawn - Good, but a bit sappy. 8/10
Dazed And Confused - I was talking trash about this in the shoutbox, but I like it now. 10/10
-
Ronald Emmerich is a director/producer/writer who has a taste for the "epic" movie ("bombastic" is probably the more appropriate word) with lots and lots of cheap CGI effects. Movies he's directed include:
10,000 B.C.
The Day After Tomorrow
The Patriot starring Mel "Sugar Tits" Gibson
Godzilla starring everyone's favorite wimp, Matthew Broderick
Independence Day
Stargate - This was crap. I was forced to verify the print when this came out. I was paid to do this and I still wanted a refund.
Universal Soldier
Moon 44
Hollywood-Monster
Joey
Arche Noah Prinzip, Das (He's a German guy, after all).
Franzmann (no, this is not a movie about Hanz and Franz).
-
last buncha movies I saw:
THE KING OF KONG - This is the only video game doc I have seen that is any good. I didn't say I loved it, but it was watchable and had some interesting folks. Steve Wiebe seems like a solid, genuinely nice guy. Roy Shildt is always worth a laugh. (I remember reading about him in Answer Me magazine back in highschool!) Does he make appearances at video game conventions? Billy Mitchell has kind of lost his mind somewhere over the years and puts on a good show. A bit of a psycho-drama, really. That was a surprise. Definitely recommended to anyone on this board.
EASTERN PROMISES - Not-bad Russian mob movie. Doesn't get my highest recommendation but it wasn't awful either. Recent Cronenberg.
CHUCK & BUCK - Hated it; practically everything about it. Made me feel like I hate LA. I would've guessed this was made in 1995 but it was 2000? The only worthwhile part of this movie is the latino lady who owns the theatre (she also plays the maid in CLUELESS, a movie about LA that I love). Somehow all of these people need to clear their throat before they speak. It makes me sick to listen to people talk through phlegm like this (I could only take 5 mins of the commentary - it's 10x as bad there. Is it cool to not clear your throat in LA??).
REST IN PIECES - PORTRAIT OF JOE COLEMAN - eh, artwork is so-so but ego abounds. Yeah, I wish I had some NY art world money coming in so I could hang out in US civil war attire smoking cigars all day too.
THE BIRDS - Hitchcock - classic. No reason to deliberate about it here. Awesome subject matter and air-tight movie making.
THE STORY OF RICKY - Wonderful 90s Hong Kong gore movie - definitely a must see for anyone here. I have had a third gen VHS tape of a Chinese copy of this (with crappy subtitles) for years - glad to see it a bit clearer on DVD. Notice I said "a bit", as the quality of the DVD picture left much to be desired.
I think that's it for me this week? I've been watching a shit-ton of LOST (Season 3). It's pretty good.. some of it is crap but overall I'm impressed. Some of the dialog in the more dramatic moments is laughable (as in bad). That's TV drama for you. Otherwise, the story has it's worthwhile elements (lotsa twists to explain past events in the storyline - the writers were definitely making this up as they went along) and characters are easy enough to connect with (they were designed that way).
I need to get a job ! :-"
-
I like my girls to be savage a la Nova from Planet of the Apes. O:)
Must be a Canadian thing, eh?
-
Must be a Canadian thing, eh?
lol. I just thought everyone had the hots for Nova. 8-[

I have always hated Ronald Emmerich. He sucks ass. Tha Day Afta Tommrow was a horrible, horrible movie. Don't make me review that! So was Independence Day.
Agreed, though his name is Roland. The only movie of his that I've enjoyed was Stargate, but my enjoyment would better be credited to Russell and Spader than to him.
And back in the day when ID came out, it kicked ass. I haven't actually watched it in like 10 years though so I don't have a fresh perspective on it.
Here's a fresh perspective for ya: it sucks sweaty ball sacks, just like it did in '96. :D
-
Here's a fresh perspective for ya: it sucks sweaty ball sacks, just like it did in '96. Very Happy
Holy crap!! It was 12 years ago that piece of crap movie came out?! Crazy. In any case, Emmerich has a really crappy resumé.
-
Wow. To say Trainspotting is a good movie is an UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE MOST SEVERE KIND.
Not that I was ever going to, but now I am 100000% sure I will NEVER do heroin. EVER.

We are the Strange
Don't let the name of the film maker "M. dot Strange" keep you from watching this gem. It's part stop motion, part mirriors and crystals, part Mario Paint (!) and part 3-D CG with hardly any dialog and a mixture of 8bit and normal music through out. The case says it combines "8bit graphics with anime" but Mario Paint is 16bit unless I am mistaken, and there is hardly any anime. I guess they figured those two words would sell it. It's really part Svankmajer, part laser light show and part acid trip. Or maybe it is the type of movie Svankmajer would do if he was 30 years old. It's slow, hard to follow at times but is a breathtaking experience if you will only let yourself sit down and watch through it from beginning to end.
The kicker is though that once you have watched the movie you discover you have wasted your time...In the extras you can play the movie with deleted scenes added back into it. Yeah, I watched it twice, in a row...and it was actually more enjoyable the second time through because you have some clue of what the hell is going on.
I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. With more dialog though it really could have been a 5 star movie.
For those of you who will never see the movie, I am going to put a small text spoiler you can paste somewhere else to tell you what happens in the movie:
A girl gets fired from her job as a stripper because everytime she speaks, her skin errupts into a rash. She wanders through a creepy forest, stumbling upon a boy. The boy and her go to the city to get ice cream. When they arrive at the city the icecream store is closed and the girls boss is killing everyone. The boy does his best to kill the boss, but he ends up destroying nearly everything and he thinks everyone he cares about is dead. However the girl ends up being alive and she tells her boss to shut up, thus killing him. The end. (yeah, that took 2 hours for the movie to convey)

King of Kong - MUST SEE! Billy Mitchell has a new challenger against his ground breaking Donkey Kong high score in the 80's. The challenger, Steve Wiebe, soon realizes that numbers don't matter as Billy and his disciples will do anything to prevent his high score from getting broke. This documentary is extremely well made and not just some amateur online gaming forum film or something like that. Even non-gamers will enjoy it!
-
that's two votes for THE KING OF KONG. It's actually turning into kind of a cult hit. People really like it - people and gamers alike. The characters are so over the top. Like I said , Billy Mitchell is insane !! Beyond socially awkward. Excellent movie.
more movies: STREET TRASH (yay), DEADBEAT AT DAWN (yay), BASKET CASE (yay), BRAINDEAD (yay), PARIS IS BURNING (yay), BLUE WATER WHITE DEATH (extreme yay), 60 SPINS AROUND THE SUN (yay), POUND (nah)

It certainly is. It's a story - point A to point B. :)

JACKIE BROWN is good but COFFEY and CLEOPATRA JONES are surely better.

Star Trek - I've been a rabid Trek fan since the 80s, before TNG hit screens. I'm not old enough to have seen TOS in it's original run during the 60s, but I saw 'em all by the time Encounter at Farpoint (first TNG episode) came around. I was just a kid but I grew up loving TOS, and later TNG to a lesser degree.
So I took my wife, who has never sat through an entire Trek episode outside of The Doomsday Machine. She loved it! Wants to go back and watch all the TOS episodes now. Lots and lots of "homage" and reference moments in this movie that I picked up on. My favorite is early in the movie, when the Captain of the Kelvin is being brought on board Nero's vessel, the orifice his shuttle enters through opens in a strikingly similar manner to the orifice of the V'Ger vessel in the first TOS film. Lots and lots of little moments like this scattered throughout. Anyway, as a movie in general this one was amazingly well done. Best movie I've seen in a while, and that's speaking just as a general moviegoer and not a Trek fan. As a matter of fact, as a Trek fan, I'm still on the fence about how I feel about it. I'm not overly thrilled with introduction of this alternate timeline, but my feelings on that may change as I get used to the idea. I'll say more on specifics once more people see it as I don't want to spoil too much.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone and everyone, especially those who think they "don't like Star Trek" as this movie will undoubtedly change your opinion a bit.
-
Agreed, just saw it last night. Outstanding flick. They did a great job with the casting, and they captured the feel and tone of the old show whil updating it and making it feel very modern.
I give it an A, and I don't really like Star Trek all that much. If they made an actual series with these actors, I'd be glued to the set.
-
Saw this at the sneak preview the night before it opened in my town, (Thursday, May 7, 2009) with my Dad. We're both casual Star Trek fans, and I thought the movie was pretty good!
I loved the mixture of freshness and familiarity, and I thought the casting and writing was excellent.
My only complaint was that it felt more like Star Wars than Star Trek at times. But besides that, I was completely enthralled. I loved the cast, I thought they did a wonderful job of channeling the original cast.
One of my favorite moments was the skydive onto the drill early in the movie. When I saw that redshirt going with them, I smiled. I KNEW what would happen, and I was not disappointed. In fact, I think that had to be the most spectacular redshirt death I've ever seen.
I loved the humor, the whole audience erupted with laughter throughout the movie, and my favorite joke has to be when Kirk meets Old Spock. What Kirk says has to be one of the most hilariously ironic moments in Star Trek history.
I liked seeing Kirk cheating the Kobiyashi Maru, but I kept wondering throughout the scenes at the academy when we would meet Fennigan! (See Shore Leave from the Orrignal Series).
So, overall, the movie, despite a few small disappointments, was great. My Dad liked it too, comparing it to Wrath of Khan, his (and many Trekkies') favorite Star Trek movie.
I will definitely be buying this when it comes out on Bluray! (I'm trying to save for a PS3)
-
I also liked the movie.
*Minor Spoilers below*
The Kobyashi Maru test scene was awesome. I loved the wink and nod to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with Kirk eating the apple during the test. In TWOK Kirk was eating an apple in the Genesis cave when he was explaining to Savik how he beat/cheated the Kobyashi Maru test.
I loved Bruce Greenwood as Pike. Just super cool and funny. I also loved his Star Trek: The Motion Picture admiral uniform at the end of the movie. The entire cast did a superb job actually.
Regarding the Star Wars feel, I just never got that. Sure there were more weird aliens hanging around, but other Star Trek movies had that - namely Star Trek III. I guess the movie wasn't an allegory for contemporary social/political issues like many other Treks, but this was an origin story. Now that the crew is united there will ample opportunity to go there in sequels. But it's not like Star Trek has always been purely allegorical.
-
I also liked the new trek movie, a lot. it was fun. But I have 2 issues with it. (spoilers)
1) the continuity reset. they're doing them every 5 years in comics now, and they're getting ever closer together.
The first time they did it (crisis on infinite earths) it made sense, because there was a whole bunch of silly shit from a ways back that had to be deat with. However, it created its own problem; it makes authors more likely to make screwy story decisions, since there's less risk; it can be fixed in the next reset. and oh, have they been making some screwy stories lately.
I really don't want that to happen to Trek.
2) Iowa looks NOTHING like the movie says. Unless we really get beat with the global warming stick.

Well, fortunately it's not a total reset/reboot. Instead it's just an alternate reality like the Mirror Universe. There's no way they could have gotten away with a complete reboot of Star Trek, but this way they don't have to pay attention to 40 years of Star Trek canon.
What's funny is that the Enterprise TV series is the only series that remains canon in this Star Trek universe. They even reference it in the movie.

Really?
Ew.

I agree, this movie was just great. They got rid of all the prentension, and all of that damned annoying techno-babble about quantum phase whatchits and tachyon streams, and the got the show back to it's roots. They remembered that it was the characters that made the original show good, not all the space flair and effects shots.
What really impressed me was how well they captured the chemistry between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. All three actors did a great job. Quinto was damned near indistinguishable from Nimoy (at that age), Karl Urban did a dead perfect McCoy ("....green blooded hobgoblin" ), and Kirk ... I'll dare to come out and say that I like the new Kirk better than the original.
I also liked the fact that they let Scotty and Checkov stay a bit over-the-top, like the old show. Both were excellent, and Simon Pegg was just hilarious. Plus, in terms of music and special effects, I love the visula update, and the new music.
I used to watch the old show as a kid, but I am not in any way shape or form a trekkie, but after this movie, I think I might become a fan. They returned the show to it's roots and realized that it's a character-driven adventure story.
Best surprise hit of the year.

Well, barely a reference. But, it is a little disturbing that Enterprise is canon in both universes. #-o hehe

The technobabble had gotten way out of control, about the time when TNG appeared on the scene, actually. Gene Roddenberry, during the run of TOS, made it clear that he did not want Star Trek to be about the technology. He wanted the show to be about people who happen to be in outer space. Actually, the first couple of seasons of TNG, while GR was still alive, didn't have much technobabble. :-k
Karl Urban was fantastic. He was the only actor who actually made no apologies for trying to imitate his predecessor (DeForest Kelly). As for Chris Pine making a better Kirk than Shatner...I can't quite bring myself to say that. hehe. Pine was fantastic though. He actually impressed me the most out of the whole cast. Though Bruce Greenwood as Pike was amazing as well.
-
I loved the console lamps on the bridge with the long necks that were an obvious homage to the retarded intercom/lamps in the first few episodes of TOS.
-
Yeah, from an acting standpoint, I was probably the most impressed with Karl Urban. To be honest, up to yesterday, I thought his acting ability stopped at scowling and looking conflicted. My bad. He did a wonderful job. I'd damn near swear he was channeling the ghost of old DeForest kelly.
Good mention on Bruce Greenwood, he was very believeable and convincing. My only gripes were the totally unnecessary 'giant critter' & 'water pipe' scenes, and the fact that the romulan Nero needed a bit more fleshing out.
All in all though, JJ Abrams did a great job. This was a HELL of a lot better than Springfield
-

hahaha. Totally.
And Scotty's pet companion is actually a midget version of one of those dune bug aliens from Nemesis.
-
Oh, I just remembered something else that bugged me about the movie.
Early on, there's a throwaway scene where checkov has difficulty getting the computer to understand his voice.
And yet, they can understand the bad guy's language, no problem. Is there a universal translator or isn't there?!

haha. There definitely is at this point. They eventually had them on Enterprise as well, which was lame IMHO.

Terminator 4 - I really had no idea what to expect going into this one, as I hadn't been following the production too closely as I do with some movies. I wasn't overly excited about it to be honest, seeing as there would be no Arnold or other actors from previous films in the series. Every part was recast for the 4th outing, but in the end, I wound up liking the movie all the same. I'm probably in the minority that loved the 3rd film, as a matter of fact, I love all the Terminator movies, with the first being far and away the best for me. The beauty of the first three is that they were all produced almost a decade apart from each other, and that made for some pretty unique feeling atmospheres for each film. The 4th is no different; feeling darker and grittier than any of the preceding episodes. The theme for this movie was bringing the franchise full-circle, with moments only referenced in previous outings realized fully. Lots of great action, and it was hard to find a failing here. If I had to cite any aspect as a negative, it'd be the heavy reliance on "homage" moments. While I enjoyed these well enough, if they'd laid 'em on any thicker I probably wouldn't have liked the film as much. All that said, I think even people who didn't like the 3rd film much will still like this one a lot. But only see it after you've seen Star Trek. Beyond these two movies, there isn't a whole lot exciting going on in the box office right now.
Oh, and to my delight there was an Arnold "cameo." Good stuff.
-
**Spoilers**
CGI Arnold shouldn't have been in there since it was about 9 years (I think) before that model of Terminator was created, but I guess they had to do it. Also, I would have liked for this movie to be in color and directed by someone with a name other than phuggin' McG.

Joe- this is from wiki-
In the fourth film, an alternate origin of The Terminator is depicted, as Marcus Wright, a death row inmate turned cyborg, is revealed to be a prototype for the T-800 with his nervous system still functioning. This was based from the cybernetic enhancement project of Dr. Serena Kogan, a research scientist who was employed at Cyberdyne Systems Corporation under "Project Angel" before the company sold its assets to the United States Air Force. With a human/machine hybrid proven to be a success, Skynet is able to move on to build and activate the T-800s ten years earlier than John Connor had expected.

*SPOILERS*
T-4 was definitely better than I expected, though my expectations were pretty low from all the bad reviews and word-of-mouth. That being said, it was still OK. I really could have done without Bale's Batman voice and constant screaming. In fact, this movie could have done without Christian Bale altogether and would have been better for it. It's no wonder Bale had his infamous meltdown during the filming of this movie. His performance was basically the same schtick minus the profane language, which would have raised the movie's rating to Restricted. Sam Worthington as the T-800 stole the show and I actually cared about this cyborg cowboy, while I really didn't care what happened to John Connor. To be honest, I was a little upset that Worthington's character gave his heart to Connor at the end of the movie. In any case, while it was just a bunch of consecutive action sequences, it still held its own and doesn't deserve the long list of bad reviews it has received.
-
It's no secret I'm not a Christian Bale fan (on the contrary), but I thought T4 was his best role yet. I could have done without him as Batman in the last two outings, but that cold, emotionless demeanor really fit the John Connor of the future I always imagined in the days of T1 and T2.

That's pretty much how I felt too- at the end of the day Connor's supposed to become this great leader of the resistance- so he should pretty much be all stone and ice at that point.

Fair enough. I just thought that Bale was a little over the top playing Connor. From what I've heard this movie wasn't even supposed to be about John Connor, at all. Apparantly, he was supposed to play Worthington's character, but Bale insisted the script get rewritten so he could play Connor. And you could tell the script was rushed/rewritten for the Bale ego. I just didn't see him as being ice cold or hardened. I really didn't have any feelings or sympathy towards him whatsoever. The only reason the John Connor character was important was because the audience either had seen the previous movies, or just in case, it was shoved down your throat throughout the movie. To me the protagonist was Sam Worthington. Without him the movie would have been a bunch of action sequences with Bale flipping out thrown in the mix.

The Slammin' Salmon - Broken Lizard, responsible for classics like "Super Troopers" and "Beerfest," brought their latest to theaters this weekend. By far the funniest movie I've seen this year, but you have to appreciate Lizard's low-brow humor to get anything out of it. If you weren't a fan of the two aforementioned flicks, chances are you'll hate "Salmon." The movie takes place almost entirely in a restaurant run by a former heavyweight champion, where the wait staff is competing for a $10,000 prize. The dialogue is extremely witty, and includes lots of references and parodies of other films. In my opinion, "Salmon" features the best characters to date by the Broken Lizard group, and there are lots of cameos including folks like Olivia Munn, some dude from Heroes (I don't watch the show), Vivica A. Fox, Lance Henriksen, the list goes on.... The theatrical trailer is available online, but does not do the movie justice. It is actually much, much funnier than the trailer portrays. In a market saturated by shitfests like Twilight and New Moon, "The Slammin' Salmon" comes as extremely refreshing.
I understand the movie had a "limited" release for some reason, so it may not be playing in your city, but it was playing downtown here in Seattle so there's a good chance it will be in your area as well. Go check it out, the only movie I saw this year I liked better was Star Trek.
(Broken Lizard's other movies: Puddle Cruiser (1996), Super Troopers (2002), Club Dread (2004), and Beerfest (2006).)
-
I'm dying to see Slammin' Salmon- it's playing at two theaters in the city which kind of sucks as I'd rather see it in Queens. Another one I want to see that's only playing in the city as of now is The Lovely Bones- though that one unlike the Broken Lizard flick is guaranteed a wide release come January (wide release was pushed back in fear of Avatar numbers). Couple of friends of mine actually recently saw Broken Lizard live- wish I would have known about it. I LOVE Beerfest. It's funny how most people have their favorite Broken Lizard movie while saying the others weren't funny. For me it's Beerfest- though I own them all (except for Pubble Cruiser) on dvd. I've heard plenty of people inexplicably say that Club Dread is their best- and others say that Super Troopers is the only thing they've done that's worth a damn. Wherever your tastes lie- Slammin' Salmon looks funny as hell- good to see you dug it...
EDIT - Pubble cruiser lol- puddle, people. puddle.
-
Phil Collette - Also know as Machete Phil!
I am the only person that prefers Club Dread to the other Super Troopers okay fare! :)

I'm with you-- Beerfest is their best. Given that, I think you'll love Salmon. I like it better than Super Troopers, but not QUITE as much as Beerfest. I already want to go see it again. The jokes are a mile a minute, I feel like I wasn't even able to take it all in fully. Go see it, even if it means a trip downtown. That's what I had to do, but it was worth it.

Saw Avatar over the weekend- my overall experience was a letdown.
I previously saw 3 of the newer 3D movies in theatres- Beowulf, Coraline, and A Christmas Carol- I loved all of them and the 3D was incredible. The commercials for Avatar alone weren't selling me- what was selling me was what I thought would be the best use of 3D yet- unfortunately- for me (as my wife and parents didn't have the same problem) this wasn't the case. If I give the 3D in Coraline a 10- I give the 3D in Avatar a 4. For those three previous movies- it took me a few minutes to adjust to the 3D sensation- in Avatar however- and this is a two hour and forty minute movie- my eyes NEVER adjusted. I had to keep closing my eyes every few minutes as they were feeling overwhelmed- and not in a good way. Taking a piss in a stall after the show let out- I was seeing swirling clouds- took me five minutes to see straight.
There should NEVER be shaky cam action scenes in 3D. 3D should be shot in smooth or fixed shots. The experience was dizzying and nauseating- and all of the blue cgi coated creatures didn't help any. It was blurry, blue, and nauseating.
As for the story- it's exactly as you heard- Dances with Wolves meets Ferngully. You know exactly where the story's headed and there's zero surprises.
The acting was decent enough- if you like your characters vanilla and one note. The special effects were amazing- as you'd guess.
Overall this was the worst of the 3D movies I've seen. I have no desire to see it again- whereas I could've watched A Christmas Carol in 3D five more times in theatres. Zemeckis and Henry Selick for the win. f*ck you Cameron. Your 3D sucks balls.
-
Dances with Wolves meets Ferngully.
Damn you. Now I actually want to see it.

Hey, don't be so quick to judge!
I watched the Jonas Brothers "3D" Concert Film with my daughter... a year ago?
Opening night! Packed theater!
I was one of only a handful of adult men there!
Good times.
-
I said that I've seen Esteban- obviously I wouldn't be caught dead watching Jonas Brothers 3D :P

So, now you're claiming that you haven't watched Jonas Brothers 3D?
I am flabbergasted.
Flabbergasted, because you told me otherwise when we ran into each other at a certain event (http://www.nkotb.com/) the other day.
:)
Pre-ordered.
