Showed up today in the mail. Came with a TurboVision and car adapter too...plus 12 games. My wife won it on ebay a couple of weeks ago. Seems to work great, although I'm not too partial to the display. I'm probably just spoiled by the awesome NDS display though. My wife played a lil bit of Galaga '90 on it while I was out doing shipments. Anyways...what bugs me about the screen is that on areas that are supposed to be solid white (like the text in the Neutopia games), it produces a lot of rainbow-like artifacts, and in areas that are supposed to be solid black, it looks rather grainy. Some of this goes away when the brightness is turned up but not all of it. Ideas?

I think that's just how they are. You just get used to it (or not). All the TEs and GTs I've ever had are like that.
-
Yeah it's just something you get used to. The actual brightness and the way the screen is presented is what's cool about it :) .

It's the limitatioms of the times man. To be honest, I've also got a Lynx, an amazingly brilliant handheld and the Turbo Express screen kills it. Best screen that was backlit until the GBA SP, to be honest. It was nice because you don't have to hold the unit at an angle to see the screen. The Nomad has a nicer screen, but the Turbo Express still kills it and that system came out years afterwards.

Part of it's the age of the screen. Part of it's the inadequate resolution of the screen. Makes text a bitch. That's why I want someone to make a portable PC Engine. That way they can use a much better screen.

Have fun waiting on that. I'd like to see that and a new Lynx. Doubt it will ever happen though. :(

Still, the screen is quite remarkable consider when it was manufactured. It's not good for games like Dungeon Explorer where text reading is required but for games like Soldier blade, it's a blast.

I think any of the platformers look just fine on it. Double Dungeons is a total nightmare on this thing though. Anything with Passwords really is not very good.

I tried Neutopia on it...tried to play it seriously...but it gave me eye strain due to the downscaling of the graphics. The water and grass tiles just made my head spin. That one's certainly not going into my game bag. Got tons of other games for it though, woohoo. :D Also, I reckon Fantasy Zone wouldn't look very good on it either...graphics are way too small. China Warrior would probably look quite badass on it...

Yeah, I remember China Warrior looking quite awesome on it back in the day. Splatterhouse looks very nice indeed on it.

Well, now I just need to get me another copy of Splatterhouse. :D I've already sold the 2 copies I had...

Try playing Tricky Kick on your Express!
You might lose your mind, literally. :)

Today I got to try it in the car for the first time (car adapter, woohoo!). Played a bit of China Warrior, Bonk's Adventure, and Vigilante. All three of them played pretty well, all things considered. Bonk's Adventure was the hardest one though, since the graphics are so scaled down...a lot of detail is cut from the game. Still looked pretty decent though. I'd try Tricky Kick but I just sold my last copy. :D
