Title: Finally received my pc-engine flash card
Post by: turbokon on February 28, 2008, 01:52:38 PM
I ordered this was back in early february but just now recieved it due to chinese new years.  I opened it up, loaded the card into the usb slim loader, plug it into the usb port, installed the driver and the software.  When I opened up the software, it said the device is connect successfully.  I picked my games, selected tg16 and write but then it just hangs up.  ](*,) I tried it a copy of more times and it still hangs.  I was starting to wonder that this device is defective.  Then I noticed that the card doesn't seem to be in the usb slim loader correctly and it is loose.  I pushed the card further into the usb slim loader very hard which made a clicking sound and tried it again and voila, it works to my amazement.  I'm very satified with it but I do wish it had more space.  I got the 64M which really should be labeled as 64Mbits.  I thought I was getting the 64MB (64Mbyte)  but they didn't make it clear.  64Mbytes would have been a bigger size since 8 bits = 1 byte.  The averge size for the turbo games are 4Mbits with Street figher being the biggest at 20Mbits.  With Street Fighter loaded and a few Mbits needed for other data, I can only fit a total of 11 games.

Yeah, it's Mbits, it actually user review data that claims Mbytes and not the place selling the card.  Still, that's at least 7.38MB of usable area.  More than enough for a few PC-E games.

From which store did you order this and what did it cost you?

From www.ic2005.com (http://www.ic2005.com/) for $109 plus shipping.  I missed out on the group discount.  For 10 or more, I think the price was $69 each for the 64Mbits and $119 for the 128Mbits.

Yeah group buys are definitely the way to go for these things.

I bought this flash card like 2 years ago and it worked fine a couple of times but then all of a sudden my PCEngine would just give me a blue screen when turning it on.  I hope this doesnt happen to you.  It would be so much better if they could make a CD with all the PCEngine roms that you pop in that uses the Super CDROM memory to play.

They already have that, although it doesn't have all the ROMs.

Did your pc-engine work after that with other hucards?

Yes, my DUO-RX plays hucards just fine.  The flashcard just doesnt boot up anymore.  I tried doing the sandpaper thing on the PCEngine flash cart leads but still no go.  I would love to ship this flash cart to somebody to see if it works on somebody else's console cause its pretty much useless to me now.

I believe you have the exact same flash cart that I ordered when it first came out about 2 years ago.  This will be great for you to test since its the same one I have.

Let me know what comes out of your testing. I'm having the same issues with my flash cart as well, except im using a TG-16 and a Turbo Express.

Yes, these flash card does not have gold plated contact unlike the hucards which do.  Hope fully, mine doesn't give out too.

It could be my contacts are damaged on the PCE side of it but it doesnt make sense to me cause I alwasy treated that thing as an infant baby due to fact it cost me over 100 bones.

There's no way that the contacts are that delicate. Mine was a new one, and after working for a while, it just stopped.

I filed my contacts down a whole bunch to try to get it to work on my TG-16. It still didn't.

Despite this, it still plays great on my Duo. If the contacts can withstand a brutal filing session, they can withstand air. It's highly unlikely the contacts have anything to do with it.

That's good to hear the contacts are not that delicate.

Nat, I think I posted this somewhere else in the forum but..

The flash card more than likely requires more power than the typical hucard. It's more than just flash rom, it has a special chip that's needed to simulate the SF2 bank switching and other logic. You should try a different power supply for your TG16 and/or try it on a different outlet.

No, I know that. I did the filing/testing/etc all before I figured out what the problem was...

I was just making a point to these guys that the contacts aren't flimsy.

Sideshow, I received your flash card on Monday.  I tried it on my turbo duo and te but just got a blank screen. :(  Can I peel the decal to look at the component?

Turbo, I can't wait to see your findings on this. Definitely keep us posted.

By all means, do what you feel is necessary to find the problem.  I feel so much better that it isnt just me who cant get the flash card to work anymore.   =P~  I do like that theory of using roms with the modified region code may have damaged the flash card because I did modify several of my US roms to play on my DUO RX.

Nat, you said you figured the problem.  What was the problem?

Well, my problem may not be the same problem some of you other guys are having.

I have a flash cart that only works in some of my consoles (others it will boot to the blue menu screen, but hang when you try to start a game). The flash cart uses more power than a normal cart and we determined the power supplied by these other systems just wasn't enough to run the bank switching.

For example: it works 100% fine in the Duo and in a GT (JP TurboExpress) when powered using the AC adapter.

It will not work in a TG-16 core at all, or the GT when powered by batteries.

I found out after testing that the folks that sell these didn't actually have access to a TG-16 or TG-CD deck for testing, only PCEs and Duos. Which explains why many people report problems with the carts when trying to run them with a TG-16 core.

Overall, I'm still happy with my purchase because the cart is technically just fine, and I can play it flawlessly in my Duo 100% of the time. I just can't use it in my bedroom where the TG-16 core is.

However, if this cart you've got isn't powering up at all, on any system, anytime, it sounds like it's fried.

Are you trying to make me jealous that you have a NEC console for every room?  :P

My card works on both my turbo duo and turbo express even with batteries.  The card I got from sideshow doesn't work in my duo or my TE even with the AC plug.

Just as I thought.  Still if you want, you can use my flash cart as a bookmark or maybe to scoop up peanutbutter to make a sandwhich.
