Ok, so you have some friends over or even some family with that crazy drunken uncle of yours and you want to show off how damn good your TG16/Cd or Duo is, what games do you bring out to show off and to maybe get them playing? Also which ones do you not ?…
For the TG16 Soldier Blade would be front row to show with its fast pace and big fire power and if its a little to fast for'm then good old Bonk's will get them smiling young or old :)
Any of the sports games that starts with the word "TV" would not be shown
EDIT: for spelling mistakes…
-
Sapphire. Definitely. If you aren't lucky enough to have it, you can substitute Lords of Thunder.
Then, Show them Bonk's Revenge. If someone comments about it being 'kiddy', remove it quickly and replace with Splatterhouse.
Finally, put in Bomberman '93 and invite all to join in :)
as for games I'd hide: Timeball, China Warrior, Ballistix, and Keith Courage (worst pack-in ever.)
-
Lords of Thunder, Bomberman '94 and of course Kickball
-
Air Zonk, Gate of Thunder, Sapphire, Lords of Thunder, Castlevania/Rondo of Blood, Terraforming (OK, so the gameplay is average, but the visuals are awesome), Bonk 3, Dungeon Explorer, the list could go on and on and on.
-
I'd hide my whole collection. I wouldn't trust some crazy drunken uncle around my precious games and systems.
If the uncle passed out, then I'd show off Anearth, Sapphire, Lords, Gate, Air Zonk, Burai, Ys, etc.

Hahahaha! I love how Burai got thrown in there!
-
At this point pretty much everyone thinks 20 year old systems are just old junk so it would have to be Bomberman/93/94 or nothing because they'd have to play a game in order to appreciate it. The visuals will do nothing for them regardless of how good they are "for back then".
Drunk uncles don't know how impressive it is for a PCE to do Saturn quality graphics (could be said of Sapphire) because they think Saturn quality graphics suck too.
-
people always get a kick out of photoboy.

I use to live about 200 yards or so from my brother and best friend who were roommates at the time so there was always allot of people around and this was eight years ago when i just got back into playing classic games.
I wanted to show every one how cool these games were, i showed them what i thought were the best games on the Duo, Snes and Genesis and the response i got from about half of the people, was (what is that, a nintendo game) even if it was a cd game with cd quality music
One day i was playing this little game called Rondo of blood when my brother came over and watched me play for about an hour, not saying anything during or after me playing the game, the next day he comes over with two of his friends, one of which had said that Macross sv for the snes and Lords of thunder looked like nintendo games , and tells me to show them the game i was playing the day before, so i did and they were very impressed, one of the guys wanted to borrow my Duo and the game...that didn't happen.
-
yeah seriously if rondo doesn't impress you then you're probably a blooming idiot
-
Hawaiian Island Girls - boobies are always impressive.
Seriously though, I'd show 'em Lords of Thunder, Sapphire, Air Zonk, Bomberman '94, and Street Fighter II' if they're SNES or Genny fans.
-
Legend of Xanadu II (bosses through debug mode)
Dungeon Explorer II (intros)
Lords of Thunder
World Heroes 2/Fatal Fury Special
Parodius
Dracula X

that would probably be my session as well  somewhere i would add dracula x. the intro alone is worth it!

The Duo has some impressive shooters that might dazzle your guests for a moment but I've found that casual gamers from back-in-the-day never really played shooters and they're too difficult for a newbie to pick up and get into.

I agree, you'd have to get them playing right away and also go for the nostalgia factor. Bonk, Alien/Devil's Crush, and Legend of Hero Tonma are good titles that anyone can pick up and play; with two-players like Bonk 3, Shockman, Splash Lake, or Devil's Crush being even better. Besides Bomberman, Moto Roader, Dodgeball and Battle Load Runner are good party games.
My friends tend to get turned-off by bad voice acting and long loading times. Because of this, DE2 and the ACD fighters have never gone over terribly well. I've had better luck getting people to play four-player Gauntlet 2 on the NES than DE2.
(Making them wait 20 minutes while you try to swap files with a Tennokoe Bank in a Barney converter and then try to figure out why your Duo Tap doesn't work with your extension chord doesn't help either...)

Besides some of these shock & awe games you guys are mentioning a game like Parasol Stars is a good one to show. Gameplay is so addicting, music is nice and zippy and zany, graphics have to make you smile and are colorful as hell, and all the points and bonuses and levels are dizzying for a small little cartridge -- and whoever doesn't love Bubble Bobble is probably brain dead.
-
I agree with the point that very few people are going to be impressed by these older systems, infact, ill go one step further and say for most people if the game is 2D, its automatically a pile of dog crap.
I just remembered something more recent, i was playing Beyond Shadowgate on my computer for the purpose of taking screenshots when my best friend knocked on the door, i paused the game , got up to let him in and when we came around the corner and he saw the screen he asked me what movie is that, i laughed and told him it was a game, he said wow, it looks like a Disney movie.
-
i am bumping this as i had some friends over this weekend with no desire to play any games but i got them hooked on Devils Crush (the chicky was playing this long time) and Dragon Saber (it was working for the guy) they were impressed ( the kiosk helped :P ) But i am sure the tg16/PCE engine gods would be please with my efforts 8)
sweet jebus... i am a venus bonk trap now :)

yeah, the kids of today won't be impressed by some of the turbo grafx games, because they're used to the playstation crap with the new technology & fancy graphics. However, there are some turbo grafx games that still hold up today, and have stood the test of time. Games like Lords Of Thunder, Gate Of Thunder, Bonk 2 & 3, Splatterhouse, Alien & Devils Crush, Shadow Of The Beast, New Adventure Island, Hero Tonma, Prince Of Persia, Air Zonk etc, would still be impressive.
-
I'm thinking perhaps that a reverse effect is possible- graphics these days are so ridiculous that it no longer looks like graphics- a few years from now kids may not even know the meaning of the word- that said- the older games- aside from the retro feel- may seem completely unique and refreshing to the younger crowd somewhere down the line- plus- I don't know- maybe it's just me- but does everybody really need to play their games in real time- games that take years to complete? I refuse to accept that there won't come a time when kids want something they can beat in a single sitdown. Basically what I'm saying is that video games today are so different than what we were used to that the classics will soon be appreciated on their own merits and not looked at as unplayable dinosaurs. Here's hoping- and if not- screw 'em.

I think what you guys mean as "impressive" is on-screen-busy- or at least zippy. Splatterhouse is neither- but perhaps can be appreciated because kids think they're looking at a Jason video game. I also don't think that any kid would find the Bonk sequels, Alien Crush, or Hero Tonma "impressive"- but perhaps they'd be won over thinking that the games look like fun- which they certainly are.
-
It seriously depends on the age. Most kids younger than 13 (and in particular, ones younger than 8) are impressed by and have fun with games like the original Sonic, Tetris/Columns/Puyo Puyo, and the Bonk games. So it depends on what age we're talking.
Older than that, Splatterhouse and Dracula X have made converts out of a lot of disbelievers. Most adults don't need to be converted, they grew up with games like the ones on the PCE, and are impressed when told that the system came out as a rival to the NES.
-
Two of my friends who are Castlevania fanatics flipped out upon seeing Dracula X. Apparently their NES-addled brains were unaware of this release 8)
Edit 11/25: I would throw in Yu Yu Hakusho (PCE SCD) for good measure as well just because it is unlike any fighting game I have ever played. Total  value when my neighbors dropped by and saw it yesterday.
-
Air Zonk, Lords of Thunder, Anearth, The Legend of Xanadu, Star Parodia
While true many younger gamers are "modern graphics whores" a lot are open to a sompler time without as many complex control schemes, and looking for FUN.
-
From my personal collection I usually show
Shadow of the Beast
Cosmic Fantasy 2
Parasol Stars
Psychosis
Everyone digs the games with cutscenes like the RPGs and stuff.
Oh, and they all get a kick out of Lords of Thunder. "Is Def Leppard doing the music?!"
My friend says that when the TG came out originally (I was 1 so I totally missed that), his friends were like NOOO THE NES OWNS IT SO HARD
and he put China Warrior on a projector and went "Lifesize sprites!" then put Contra and went "NO LIFE SIZE SPRITES"
They were impressed.
by China Warrior.
I like showing Shadow of the Beast to the Amiga fanboys and saying "hey look! no disk swaps!" it makes them twitch a little sometimes :-D
-
I would show the intro of YS III for the amazing voice acting......just incredible!
All seriousness I would probably show off my Street Fighter II CE, and brag about how the best 16-bit street fighter II CE game never came to US shores. I have a handful of fighting game friends that would take on the challenge of getting owned on some SF II CE.....
After that maybe show off some Snatcher clips and talk about differences in the US Sega CD version.
Moving on - Bomberman games are great as many have suggested. We could move on to the Arcade CD fighters, but I have some better versions of those on other consoles now......but cool to show since many wouldn't think it would be possible on a Turbo.
Did anyone mention the Macross shooter game? You gotta show that - cool animes, good shooter, awesome soundtrack! Just throw that in, mention Robotech, they will enjoy that one.
-
I would show the intro of YS III for the amazing voice acting......just incredible!
and then show them last alert!
-
Give em' Kunio Dodge Ball. I showed it to a kid who loved super dodge ball for nes and he flipped out and went crazy and bought a TG16 system because he was so impressed.
-
oh totally. Dodgeball on PCE kicks the balls out of the NES one.
-
Sorry for the necropost, but judging from reactions a turboFest this year, we had great success with-
Dracula X, Sapphire, and Gate of Thunder.
I still stand by Lords of Thunder too!!
If we're talking Hueys only- Bomberman '93/'94- Air Zonk or SFIICE
-
All excellent show-off games.
Spriggan is another one I like showing off. Large, detailed sprites, wicked fast action, pumping soundtrack - all around excellent shooter that makes fans of the genre drool.
-
I like the show off Insanity now, and if its to someone who doesn't know its homebrew, and doesn't know I made it, I like when they go "this games kinda gay"
and then I go "oh, the next game I make will be less homoerotic."
and then its awkward for them, and I laugh.
-
yeah lol def ai cho aniki. people are like"what kind of system is this?!?" they get all excited on how different it is and then Ill break out gate of thunder, play some bomberman or then show sapphire, find a game with some kick ass music, show them how cool street fighter 2 is on it or fatal fury special.
I just try to some my friends some of the old games that were in the arcade as kids, show them something weird like cho aniki and show them that retro games are really still awesome to play!!!
-
Dracula X,Lords of Thunder,Kaze Kiri,Ninja Spirit.
Other then that games that use the multitap bomberman 94 or DEII.
-
Terraforming (OK, so the gameplay is average, but the visuals are awesome)
You know I usually agree with alot of your opinions but I think the graphics on Terraforming are average at best. I personally think the game blows donkey except the music and level 3.
For my show off games it's: Soldier Blade, Bomberman 93 and Lords of Thunder.
-
We had a get together a few weeks ago at my place and I showed off Lords. My cousin said it looks like atari graphics. Man, I was crashed:(
-
Everyone i know who has seen SOTN thinks it looks like an nes game, except they think that nes games are more colorful.
-
That's nice that you guys are friendly with the mentally challenged. Too often people will shun the 'special' people.
-

How old is your cousin?
I think Lords is a great choice, btw. That's what I'd pick.
-
I was trying to impress my friend with LoT, Sapphire, and Shubibinman 3 but he was most interested in Keith Courage and Shubibinman 1.

lol aint that a bitch! actually hey whatever floats the boat i guess
-
I had this stoner hippie chick over at a party at my place. SHE asked to play the duo, and before I could show anything off, she grabbed Monster Lair and said she wanted to play it.
She sat there for two hours playing Monster Lair. My bro started dating her, and when she would come by, she would play it everytime.
I like to show off lords, bonks
-
for me quite clear:
Gate Of Thunder
Winds of Thunder
Drac x
Sapphire
Seirei Senshi Spriggan
R-Type (still)
Gradius II - Golfer no yabou
-
out of what i have, i usually choose -
splatterhouse
rondo
gate/lords of thunder
sapphire
Ys
Super Raiden
-
I would like to show off Gate of Thunder, but since I only have it on Wii Virtual Console, I think the effect would be diminished. I usually put in Raiden or Devil's Crush to show them first.

your cousin needs to be punched in the dick.
