PCE Hucard only! NO Supergrafx, TurboGrafx, ACD or SCD etc. I did this on another forum and got some interesting responses. The 10 best PCE Hucard games (they don't need to be your favourite).
Here are mine:
1. Magical Chase
2. Coryoon
3. Parasol Stars
4. Soldier Blade
5. PC Denjin
6. Tatsujin
7. Gekisha Boy
8. Outrun
9. Hana Taka Daka
10. Street Fighter 2
Even with 10, it is really difficult. There are sooooo many good card games on the engine. The skill and talent required by developers back then when card size was limited to just 3-4 megabits (~500kb!!) in most cases and to come up with the games as good as those above, is frankly remarkable.

We recently did this-

and these were the results-

Ahh but that was for the TurboGrafx!
This one is for the PCE :)
-
no that was for both pce and turbografx.
if you look closer at the top ten of the survey winners you'll notice street fighter II in there-
and if you look closer at each person's top ten picks you'll see japanese only titles littered throughout.
the votes for the turbografx games were also the votes for their pce counterparts-
in other words same exact thing.
if you happen to mean games that were only released in Japan (hence PCE only)- your list has 4 games that were also released in America.
-
Ahh only looked at the results which looked like Turbo games.
I guess posting that in the Turbo area would bias against turbo owners?? Certainly you named them all using the US names.
Personally I can't believe Gekisha Boy didn't even feature in the Top 25!! An outrage I tell ya! No Coryoon? And no Bomberman??
Hmm. Very Turbo-centric if you ask me!
-
Gekisha Boy was number six on my list if you look at the first link. I agree its one of the top ten hucards period.
Also not sure why you say it's turbo-centric that there's no Bomberman- if it was MORE turbo-centric then Bomberman would have showed- not the other way around...
it's just the way people voted- as you said- so many great games.
I used the translated or american version title names when possible since I like it that way- and since I actually tallied up all the votes :P
-
Probably didn't feature on the final list as most people haven't played it due to it being a limited IREM release and a high price tag. Shame really. One of the most original games ever to be released!
-
Only 3 out of 29 voted for it. I think it's a shame too- but as you said- not many here have it- and some who want it are waiting for an English patch version- which I personally find hard to understand as English text isn't needed to play the game or to understand the story as the opening scenes are pretty self-evident...
Then again I don't understand why quite a few of my faves are shown little love- like Son Son II and Doraemon Arabian Nights... But that's why they're MY faves- everyone has their own.
-
Yeah well I am glad GunHed came out on top... the original shooter when RED were on top of their game. I would say it was only surpassed later on with Soldier Blade but GunHed was and will always remain #1 and rightly so!
-
I too agree undoubtedly that Soldier Blade is better.
how's Hanatakkadakka? I just ordered it last night and I see it's on your top ten list. I also have Out Run on the way- leaving me not having three on your list (all of which I want- Tatsujin and Magical Chase are my number 1 & 2 most wanted hu's and I don't have Street Fighter II yet but only because I'm still tracking down avenue pad 6's).
Coryoon is excellent and I like it better than Air Zonk- but being that I beat it the very first game I played I couldn't list it on my top ten.
-
Hanatakadaka (so many ways of spelling it) is excellent - cutesy graphics and great tunes (which Taito are very good at). Some parts of the gameplay are very original - for example, there is one level which I remember where it switched from being left-right shooter to right-left - simple and effective and hints that the developers were trying to be a bit original which I like.
OutRun if like me you played at the arcades when I was younger back in late 80's is not quite the arcade however still a very good port and listenining to the music is enough to remind you of the good old days!
SF2 needs no explanation. Tatsujin is an awesome shooter - perhaps on par with Soldier Blade!! But it is difficult as hell, arguably the hardest shooter on the engine. Another is rather hard to track down and costs a pretty penny.
Magical Chase also doesn't need an introduction - a cutesy shooter, great graphics and tunes.
-
yeah the prices are the only reasons I don't have tatsujin and magical chase yet- and with magical chase- I want the US version which is even more expensive.
-
Since we already had this thread a few weeks ago, let me just cut and paste my list from there. I'll add the Japanese names in parentheses if different.
Space Harrier
Dungeon Explorer
Gunhed
Air Zonk (PC Denjin)
Bonk 3 (PC Genjin 3)
Sinistron (Violent Soldier)
Psychosis (Paranoia)
Afterburner II
Download
Samurai Ghost (Genpei Toumaden 2)
-
You know nat I didn't notice that Download was on your list- It's the only one from your list that I don't have (though if the list was newer perhaps you'd have MC on it) and it's my number five most wanted hu. Perhaps I should pull the trigger on that one pronto.
-
It's a very tough game Sinisi, but beating it is sweet sweet victory. I love the subject matter of the game, the cinemas, etc. A very enjoyable experience, one of the best shooters on the system if you ask me. The weapon powerup system is gold, but I can't explain it. You just have to experience it first-hand.
And no I wouldn't put MC on that list because this apparently is the "PCE list" and the PCE version of MC blows donkey nuts.
-
I'm a cut and paste post whore!
1. Dungeon Explorer
2. Neutopia II
3. Soldier Blade
4. Military Madness
5. Bomberman '94
6. Dead Moon
7. Splatterhouse
8. Cadash
9. Bonk's Revenge
10. Time Cruise
-
I posted my top ten card games in the other thread, so for this one I guess I'll list my favorites that didn't have US TurboChip counterparts. These are roughly in order:
Altered Beast
Salamander
Parodius
Jimmu Denshou
Final Soldier
Spiral Wave
Batman
Energy
Cyber Knight
Takeda Shingen
I have such good taste in games.
Certainly you named them all using the US names.
Hmm. Very Turbo-centric if you ask me!
I don't think it's a matter of Turbocentrism. I think it's reflective of the fact that the US actually got plenty of the excellent HuCard games.
As for using the Turbo names, those of us who grew up with the system here in the US are much more used to the titles "Axe" and "Lazers" than we are to "Makyou Densetsu" and "Gunhed."

See now that's a good idea Type-R-
if you were to start a new thread for top ten Japanese only hucards- no counterparts. However you'd have to change your list as well.
Anyway- here's a top ten JP only hucard list from me (my favorites)-
and this was much tougher than ten overall hucards for me- there were like twenty that was hard to make into ten- so don't consider this exact-
1 Photograph Boy
2 Son Son II
3 Doraemon Arabian Nights
4 Liquid Kids
5 Image Fight
6 Lady Sword
7 Bonze Adventure
8 Parodius
9 Bomberman 94
10 Coryoon
Honorable mention: Ryukyu
Again- these are my favorites- I'm not saying that they're necessarily the best ones.
Others I wanted to mention: Bikkuriman World, Dracula Boy, Genji Tsushin Agedama, Gomola Speed, Gradius, Ninja Gaiden, Salamander...
-

No need for a new thread - let's do it right here, right now. 8)
1. Bomberman '94
2. Parodius Da!
3. Street Fighter II'
4. Twin Bee
5. Photograph Boy
6. Hatris
7. Batman
8. 1943
9. Ninja Gaiden
10. Aoi Blink
-
Hey necro does that Hatris have a two-player option?
I've seen you profess your love for this title before and I must admit that at first I felt you were joking- I can clearly see now that you're not... I like a good falling brick though - Ryukyu and Spin Pair both surpassed my expectations- might have to pick up this Hatris as well and pile some hats on some Moes.

Altered Beast? I thought it really frustrating.
Takeda Shingen???!!??!??!!??? That Commodore 64 reject?? :o
I'm surprised that Galaga 88 hasn't been mentioned by anyone. Surely it deserves a vote or two...

Now we're onto only released in JP hueys Spector-
Can the OP please change the thread title if we're to do this?
This can easily become a mighty head-f*ck of a thread...

Nope, but I don't think any other ports did either. I enjoy a good falling brick game as well, and this one is the best yet that I've played for the ol' Turbo (the best part of Ryukyu is the manual). Hatris isn't terribly impressive in the graphics department, but the tunes are catchy, the game play solid, and it can be bought for cheap. The only bad thing about Hatris is that it's too easy.

a.k.a. - the best kind of thread

Look at that guy ripping on the outstanding HuCards I chose. Next thing you know, someone will try to claim that Energy is a bad game.
-
Really? no love for Ryukyu? I find that to be the most relaxing game ever- even if the straights inexplicably get more points than the flushes...

Maybe I was grouchy and didn't give it enough of a chance before declaring it sucky. I'll give it another chance some time - maybe Dean'll have a copy..... if he ever gets unburied from work/family/whatever.

No chance of that - Energy is one of the greatest games ever made. It's the reason I bought a PC Engine :D :D
To be fair, I liked the cheesy music in Altered Beast, and the change from man to wolf on level one always made me chuckle. Hey it's funky!
-
See, some interesting lists and some games (which I won't mention) that I wouldn't give the time of day are appreciated by others!
Whats the saying again: One mans meat is another mans posion?
Thats why the PCE (ok, and Turbo) rocks - so many games and so much choice! :)
-
My list of favorites/bests that didn't have US TurboChip counterparts. These are not in order:
SFIICE
Darius Plus
Bikkuriman World

Aoi Blink
1943
Populous
-
Nice Tiger, NICE!!!! I love seeing Son Son II get the love it deserves
-
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Image Fight is the best game available under 20 bucks.
Here's my list of Japan only HuCards:
1) Image Fight
2) Street Fighter II'
3) War of the Dead
4) Detana!! Twinbee
5) Salamander
6) Doraemon Daisakusen
-
.. the best game available under 20 bucks.
Thats a whole new thread!
-
I think I tried to start a thread like that some time ago... Don't remember what happened to it.
