Title: Two new shmups for the 7800
Post by: guyjin on April 02, 2008, 09:29:42 AM
Yes, really. A couple of playable prototypes were unearthed and patched to work on a standard 7800. they are:

I'm not into Atari stuff in any way, shape or form but that's pretty awesome nonetheless.

Those look pretty good for 7800 games.  It's nice to hear that there's a few programmers with enough Atari love to finish nearly done, unreleased games; it gives me faint hope that Marble Madness, Peter Packrat, and Cocoron source code will someday be found, finished, and released.

Wow, this is pretty sweet! Both games look pretty interesting and I never thought the games were "finished"... there have been many rumors about the extent to which the programming had been completed...

...and I really didn't think the games would look so nice. I wonder how they will play...

That's some cool stuff. I didn't realize the 7800 could pull off graphics like that.

Word.. that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the screens.  Very Commodoresque.

Reconsider it.

The 7800 controller is painful to use -- literally, it hurts your hand.

That's what I'm saying, and why I avoid Atari systems in general. They have some pretty strange ideas about how people like to control games.

had. you have to remember that NOBODY used D-pads before Nintendo*; other than the Intellivision, everything pre-crash was joystick based. the stuff with the number pads was just keeping up with the joneses (much like everyone coming out with 6 button pads after SF2). Yes, even the Jaguar; Jag controllers are actually just rebranded Atari ST Computer controllers. which explains the number pad; the concept hadn't been "debunked" yet.

You don't have to use the Pain-Line stick. Get yourself one of the European joypads or modify an NES controller (there are guides for doing this).

I just picked myself a 7800 real cheap off ebay, with the European style pads (Well I am in the U.K!!!). The pads look really cool, I just hope they are comfy!

Meltdown and dig dug.

Not too bad, but you'll need a light gun for Meltdown. You can either find the one that came with the Atari XEGS or you can rewire a Sega Light Phaser.

5200 is where i stopped on the Atari, but with the looks of those shooters not bad at all, and them being prototypes its even cooler.
