Yes, I know some of them aren't exact rip offs, but oh well.
I personally like Golden Axe Warrior, Golvellius, and Neutopia. I haven't yet played Neutopia 2. I can't figure out what the hell do do in Zelda 1, I just wander around and stab things, nothing ever happens. Things happen in the other games I chose.
Shining Wisdom is ass!
-
What about the Thor/Oasis games? If they count then they are way better than that other crap.
-
Totally agree on the original Zelda... I don't understand the way it's practically worshipped. Voted Neutopia 2, though I would have considered an Oasis game if it was listed.
-
Neutopia 2
Crusader of Centy
Shining Wisdom
Magic Knight Rayearth
all classics :)
-
as a rip off my vote would go to Alundra for the ps1(so i choose "some other game i missed")… its quite good and playstation's answer to a zelda type of game.
2nd i agree with you on Golvellius, it was a great game, had unique look to it with the oversized monsters.
Still i 'am still a big fan of the original, give me a zelda game and my gba and hours go by.
-
I figured I would miss a lot of games, so please list 'em! I never even though of Beyond Oasis, but I guess that can kind of count as well. I've never played Alundra. Wasn't there also an Alundra 2?
-
Yes there was a Alundra 2 for the ps1 which i have not played, but heard it was not as good as the first.
Joe your list is solid man but there will always be a few that will get away from ya :D
-
Alundra had so many puzzles that it made the current Zelda games look like they forgot to include them. Aludra is the suxors ~lolz !!11!!111!1!!
I didn't play Alundra 2, but I assume it's more of the same. Neutopoa was a pretty good Zelda 1 rip off. Neutopia 2 should have been a Zelda 2 rip off :x

Beyond Oasis (Gen) and Legend of Oasis (SS). These are the only Zelda knock-offs I've played that didn't feel like embarrassing derivative poorly made shit. They aren't really knock-offs though. Not like, say, Neutopia and Alundra, which are just so obviously ripping off Zelda, and doing it in such an obviously inferior way that I feel awkward even playing them. Kind of like all those Acclaim games that were extremely similar to whatever popular stuff came out that quarter. What is the point of this stuff? I guess its just Zelda for people who don't have the Nintendo machine.
-
But can't that be said of any genre...X game is ripping off/emulating/copying W because it came first?
-
Crystalis (NES / GBC) is seen by many as a Zelda rip off... but to me, Crystalis is better than Zelda.
I'm still waiting for the Neo Geo remake / sequel, as it was published by SNK...

Yeah, but there are loads of good R-Type, Street Fighter II, and Final Fantasy rip-offs that are totally worth playing. For me personally there are enough actual Zelda games made all the time to satisfy my "action RPG with hook shot" needs without resorting to inferior cash-ins. Maybe if more people ripped off Zelda we'd get better stuff?
-
The SMS amazes me. Golden Axe Warrior looks far superior to Zelda, graphics wise. It's too bad it suffered by the hands of Nintendo. :(
-
Hydlide!
When you say "best," do you mean the game that did the best job of blatantly ripping off Zelda, or the most-fun game to actually play?
Anyway, Golden Axe Warrior is the most fun. By tacking a Zelda clone onto the Golden Axe franchise Sega at least made an attempt, however pathetic, to justify GAW as an original game. It also gets points for not including a f*cking princess.
Neutopia has no reason to exist; although it's still a good game.
-
The Neutopia games are for people who like the general idea of the original Zelda but find it tedious in its implementation. People like me.
-
None of the above. I don't consider any of the above games to be Zelda ripoffs.
-
Neutopia I and II are obviously the best games. I honestly like 'em, but I think there's some sort of law that forced me to vote for 'em anyway.

I respectfully disagree. All games would benefit from the addition of hard core porn.

ya oasis shoulda been on there but I'd go for neutopia I & II
-
I voted for Neutopia - TurboGrafx-16 Entertainment Supersystem. I still really like the original Zelda, but like each sequel less and less and can't get into the N64 games.
-
Going with Neutopia with Golden Axe Warrior a close second.
-
It looks like at least a couple of people picked Neutopia over Neutopia II... For those of you who did, I'm curious why? Neutopia II just seems like a solid improvement all around to me. Especially better graphics and 8-way attacks.

I rented Neutopia II when it came out. I got to the last area, but had to find a shield or something I was missing, wound up wasting a bunch of time and didn't bother to renew it. Up until that point, I didn't have as much fun as I had expected to.
Like many sequels, it may appear better overall on paper, but it didn't feel special like the originator.
Maybe when I finally try it again I'll love it. Until then the first Neutopia is fine for me as a straight Zelda rip off.
It should be taken into account that I prefer the original Zelda to all its sequels as well.
-
I guess that makes sense. I went into Neutopia II without any precoceived notions -- I had about a half hour logged on the first game. I liked what I was seeing of the first, so I decided to switch over to the second to see what it was like and thought it was way better.
So yeah, looking at the two objectively, together, I'd pick II. But if I had played through the first and been waiting for the sequel to come out because "it's going to be so awesome," then I can see how II isn't such a big deal. It's ultimately not that much of an upgrade.

I see this thread more of a "which game does the best at copying the Zelda style", and only Neutopia does this to a T. Big evil guy steals princess, you go and find 8 magical pieces of "something", along the way you have to find some "ultimate sword" to fight said big evil guy. Also, big evil guy in LoZ and Neutopia both have 5 letters in their name. :D Neutopia II has similar gameplay, but that's only because it's the same genre of game...LoZ and Neutopia II have very little in common aside from big evil guy's five-letters-in-name. Neutopia II isn't much of an improvement over Neutopia, the eight way movement and attacking is a step up but of course, the bucketload of bugs in the game kinda cancel that out. :D Fear not though...Neutopia III will be an actual improvement, much like LttP was over the original LoZ. It may not come out until 2025 though... :D

I sadly haven't tried the Neutopia games yet but Golden Axe Warrior was the best Zelda 1 clone I have ever played. Never got to beat it though. I wish I can get my hands on the cartridge again. I had the game 15 years ago.
