I submit that there is not.  Discuss.

yeah- because otherwise there's no point in his "revenge"  :D

but seriously- I'm the type that likes to see how games evolve from the original to the sequels... so that's my reasoning.  But yeah Bonk's Revenge is the best of the three.

Bonk's Adventure still rocks. I still like it. :)

The vastly superior level design of Revenge renders Adventure obsolete.

I like Bonk's Adventure best. Its a must for any turbo/pce enthusiast.

I much prefer part 1 to part 2.  But even part 1 is a weak game, and Bonk is a weak mascot.

This thread is about Bonk's Revenge played on a Super Gameboy vs. Bonk's Adventure on the toploading NES2 with a dogbone controller, right?

This is kind of a pointless topic.

Give Sonic 2, is there any reason to play Sonic 1?

Given Super Mario Bros. 2, is there any reason to play Super Mario Bros. 1?

Given Resident Evil 4, is there any reason to play the previous entries?

Etc.

Oh, I considered these before posting!  Mario 1 has significantly different gameplay from Mario 2 and 3, so it's absolutely still worth playing.  In addition, all Sonic games have great level design, so they're all worth playing, despite having similar gameplay.  Bonk's Revenge, however, maintains the same basic gameplay as Bonk's Adventure but with vastly superior level design.

Actually no.  In Bonk's Adventure you can spin for MUCH longer in the air then you can in Bonk's Revenge- something that always changed the gameplay feel entirely.  This is absolutely a pointless thread- not that I haven't been guilty of a few myself  :D

edit- maybe "entirely" is too strong here- but yeah the gameplay definitely is different  :)

both are the big hit! the one is not better or worse than the other!

This thread is a bit pointless, so here's my pointless opinion: Bonk's Adventure is no more useless than Bonk's Revenge, as they're both inferior to Bonk's Big Adventure.  There's plenty of enjoyment to be had in all of 'em; a true Turbo fan would play all three, preferably simultaneously.

If Tommy Lasorda Baseball is so great, is there any point in playing Last Resort?  I'm thinking "no".

Level design in Bonk 2 is only "vastly superior" in that it's just different.

Either way, my point was that there are countless instances in video game history (as well as movie, album, etc) where sequels 1-up their predecessors in one way or another. Doesn't always mean the original isn't worth bothering with, unless the original happens to be a steamy pile of crap, which Bonk's Adventure surely is not. It's a cult classic at the very worst, and has a style and charm absent from the entire rest of the series. All subsequent games (including the SFC entries) were based more or less on the mechanics and ideas of Bonk's Revenge and therefor derivative as such. Variety is the spice of life, and you can play Bonk's Adventure back to back with any of the other four "real" entries in the series (I don't count the NES or Gameboy versions; those were cheap cash-in attempts as far as I'm concerned) and you're guaranteed a fresh experience.

Having said all that, I agree with Necromancer wholeheartedly-- Bonk 3 is by far the best in the series. It took everything that worked well in the first two games, combined them, and threw in some new ideas of it's own. I'd say Adventure comes second, because it's so different and has that venerable charm. Bonk 2 is arguably the worst of the bunch, actually-- horrible spin control, recycles it's own levels with palette swaps and minor adjustments (1-1, 1-2 become 5-3 and 5-1 respectively), lackluster bosses (stage 5 is missing a boss altogether), etc.... Don't get me wrong-- I love all 3, but I'm just trying to prove a point. Revenge was a "concept game." Some of the new concepts worked out-- some not so much. But to say it was so grand it rendered part 1 obsolete-- preposterous.

PC Genjin 2 renders Bonk's Revenge pointless. Discuss.

:)

Seriously, though, Bonk's Return is, arguably, the best of the series. Mobile gaming at its finest. Yes, I have it.

Verizon, with a Samsung? phone.  I don't know if they still offer Bonk's Return (I downloaded the game... a year or two ago?). I also have Military Madness. Again, I think it was 2 years ago that I downloaded them.

Bonk's Return is fun for a cellular game, except the controls are lame. jluedke wrote a review here a long time ago, IIRC.

While Bonk's Revenge is vastly superior to Bonk's Adventure, I still think there's value in playing both....
That way, you can see how the series progressed from the first installment and beyond.

Cool, thanx for the info. I have sprint w/ a samsung a900 blade. It isn't available to download for me and my contract is up, so I'm choosing my next carrier based on getting bonk's return!

I submit that there is not.

I think that this type of thinking negates "retro gaming" in general. Why bother playing anything old when something new comes around?

With that said, Bonk's Big Adventure is the weak link in the PCE series, due to it's level design and growing/shrinking gimmick. Bonk's Revenge is still the most refined overall, but Adventure has some unique gameplay and level designs that are very fun without feeling like 'more of the same' so much as the post-Revenge sequels do.

Yeah, you're probably right, even though I never really thought Adventure was the weakest (of course, I haven't really played Bonk 3 for Turbo).

As Sinistron? mentioned, Adventure provides the best spinning action this side of Moonland!

Plus, even thought the level designs are basic, the music is so great that you don't mind spinning through them :)

I really dig "Moonland Sonata" (ending credit music), the boss tune, everything, really.

Bonk 3 is my fav with two players. Otherwise it is kind of boring one player.

Each sequel seemed to get better.  Bonk Adventure < Bonks Revenge < Bonk 3 < Super Bonk < Super Bonk 2...........

Isn't this how sequels usually go?

But yeah Bonk had nothing on Mario or Sonic unfortunately...........

I think the only Mario game I'd rather play than any Bonk is SMW, and only because of its vast number of levels. But no, Bonk's Adventure did not become obsolete because of Bonk's Revenge; the games don't play the same, and Bonk's Revenge is far easier. I actually played the series in reverse order, starting with 3, then 2 and then finally 1 (Duo pack-in, I never even owned a Bonk 1 or 2 card until 2008!). I beat Bonk 3 the first night I played it back in the day...slightly disappointing but fun anyways. Bonk 2 took 3 days, but it took me 5 days of playing to finally beat Bonk's Adventure. I still find it amusing how much the Bonk 3 games go for these days.

As far as mascots go...dunno. Bonk and Sonic are pretty original characters, but Mario's kinda dull. It's always been the gameplay that made the Mario games decent, not the characters. Too bad they don't even get that right anymore. Sonic was fun for awhile...1, 2, 3, CD, and Spinball are all classics and a lot of fun, but the series took a shit bath after that. Most great platformers are destroyed by making them 3D...Mario and Sonic were no exceptions, though at least Super Mario 64 was a good game for the most part...

IMO, Super Mario Galaxy is by far the best 3D Mario game. Best Mario game, period, since SMB4/Super Mario World.

But I agree-- Bonk and Sonic were much better mascots, personality-wise than Mario. Mario didn't even have a "personality" until they gave him that gawdawful voice "It's-a-me.... Maaaaaaaaaaaaario". Please, someone shoot me now.

I think it's charming that some Japanese guy made a video game icon out of an Italian plumber.  Then I got sick of seeing Mario everywhere I turned my head.  There's a point where it just becomes force-feeding.  How many forking adventures can this guy have?  Settle down already and grow old like the rest of us.  They should have a Mario adventure in an old-man's home- where the power-ups are his dentures, diapers, cane, viagra, and creepy old fashioned peppermint swirls and ribbon candy.  I think Mario's too old to still be tripping out on mushrooms.
