Title: 1995 PC Engine game of the year
Post by: guyjin on April 26, 2008, 08:50:07 AM
it's 1995. The PCE is now 8 years old, older than the Atari 2600 at the time of the crash.
it now has the Playstation and Saturn to worry about.

The end is near, but the old HE system keeps cranking out the hits. 37 of 'em to be exact.
Have they saved the best for last?

I'd likely vote for Seiya Monogatari / Anearth Fantasy Stories or Gulliver Boy if I'd managed to finish them.

But I voted for Kaze No Densetsu Xanadu II, which is not only good, but really fun.

Sapphire FTW. Lots of GREAT games this year.

Anearth was a close 2nd.

Anearth.

Best of the rest: Xanadu II, Asuka, Sapphire, Gulliver Boy, Private Eye Dol.

Too many good games for me to be able to vote.
I remember back at the time : no internet and no more PC Engine reviews in french magazines, I was sure that games were no longer released on our beloved system. Still, 1995 is a good vintage.

I voted for Ai Choaniki. The only 1995 release I actually played. Such an awesome and goofy shmup.

I voted Sapphire, but somewhat reluctantly.

BTW, "Galaxy Fraulein Yuna HuVideo" isn't really a game. Its just a video that came packed with the reprint of Yuna 1.

No question about it, gimme Sapphire!

Word.  A vote for that one is really a vote for the first Yuna, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Besides the few shooters and good RPGs, it looks like a glut of porno games and dating sims.  Oh, poor, poor, dying PC-Engine.

I voted for "The TV Show" because it sounds cool.

Looks cool too.  I already decided that The TV Show will be my Christmas present from myself at the end of the year  :D

Its not a peak year, but you should look more closely into some of those games. There are some nice ones in there.

I knew the majority would vote Sapphire lol. I voted Asuka 120% Maxima Burning Fest. After getting this game I was really impressed with it for just being a super cd fighter. Alot more impressive then Martial Champions,AVG,or Flash Hiders and a great combo system alot of fighters from that time couldn't touch.

1 for Kabuki, the under-appreciated fighting game!

I agree, Kabuki is great. Just one great game out of many in 1995. But Sapphire and others were better....  :P

Formation Soccer 95 is a great game too, but maybe not so interesting for american players.
I forgot about that one but I also think that Kabuki Itouryodan is 1995's greatest game (still, Linda Cube, Sapphire, Seiya Monogatari and Xanadu 2 are great games too).

Itouryoden is a great game and gets bonus points for tying into Kabukiden. But its still a street fighting game and I'm biased towards questy/RPG stuff. :P

A lot of these entries are a bit obsure to me here. I have decided to pick Kabuki: Ituryuden since it was quite an interesting game when I've first watched a video of its gameplay. It's nice that there is an option to play as Manto (or Manto X as the game refers to), since he/she is my obligied favorite Tengai Makyou character, closely followed by Kabuki (don't worry too much, SuperPCEngineGrafx ).

Other interesting entries are Ai Choanki, Ginga Fuki Densetsu Sapphie, Gulliver Boy, Renny Blaster, Space Invaders - The Original Game. All of these I've heard of a little before, but haven't had enough interest provoked out of them to determine if they can be highly likeable or not for me.

i voted for xanadu ii and THEN i saw anearth.  aw man, it is a toss up.  still, i think i went with my heart on this one as xanadu ii blew me away in that the SNES ws getting all the rpg props at the time in the states and xii proved the pce could more than hold its own. i didn't own anearth until years and years later. had i had them both back then though...

sapphire was obviously awesome (though unfairly short) but it had the obvious advantage of the arcade card. also, while sapphire looks and sounds incredible, i don't feel it is as exciting a shooter as lords of thunder...yep, i said it. lords has the one thing sapphire doesn't: attitude. it's an unprogrammable intangible that i have rarely (if ever) seen in any shooter.

and gulliver boy's hu video cut scenes were freaking awesome (and that game is in something of a nostalgic fave category).

I haven't played any of these games.   :( But I've seen plenty of gameplay videos and screenshots to make a somewhat educated vote. I was very tempted to pick Sapphire (I actually just purchased a copy of the "2nd Print"), but Anearth just looks too good to deny it FTW status. Sapphire looks like an early Playstation game - hell I've seen PS2 shooters that don't measure up, but from what I hear it's pretty short. Anearth gets the FTW for the more epic experience.

My opinion, of course, could easily change once I actually play these games. lol  8-[

I think Sapphire is a great technical accomplishment for the PCE, but it's definitely not the best game the system has to offer. It's a very good game, but there are so many other shooters on the system I like more.

I've been playing a lot of Xanadu II lately, so that gets my vote. Pretty easy, but lots of fun. It has enough variety to keep each part fresh.

but in here, we talking about the best game of 1995. so the choice isn't that hard to set ;)

Of the ones I've played, Sapphire for sure.  It's certainly a showpiece game for the hardware, and a great shooter in its own right.

There are still some games on that list I'd like to try on the list, especially Xanadu II -- that one looks real good.

And just to be anal because I see the game often mis-transliterated in the west (even though it even sounds a bit awkward), it's Nekketsu Legend Baseballer.  ベースボーラー [baseballer] vs ベースボール [baseball].

I love the baseball armor, too. It looks... uh... very un-baseball-like.

Yeah, that's what I said when I first found out about it.  I knew it wasn't gonna happen anytime soon (if ever), so I just ended up playing through the JP version -- I wrote up a little review on it.
